Azim Premji to retire as executive chairman and MD of Wipro by end of July

IT major Wipro founder Azim H. Premji, who turned a small maker of vegetable oil into a $8.5 billion software behemoth, will retire as the company head by July-end and handover reins of the firm to his son, Rishad.

Mr. Premji, who turns 74 next month, will retire as executive chairman upon the completion of his current term on July 30, 2019, after having led the company for 53 years, Wipro said in a statement.

He, however, will continue to serve on the board as a non-executive director for five years till July 2024 and has also been conferred the title of founder chairman.

Wipro board also announced that chief executive officer and executive director Abidali Z. Neemuchwala will be re-designated as CEO and managing director, while Rishad Premji will be re-appointed as whole-time director for a period of five years with effect from July 31, 2019, to July 30, 2024. Mr. Rishad Premji will be designated as executive chairman.

These changes will be effective July 31, 2019, subject to shareholders’ approval.

₹52,750 crore for philanthropic activities

A recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards, Mr. Azim Premji now plans to devote more time for philanthropic activities.

He had, in March 2019 gifted an additional ₹52,750 crore of the company’s shares to support philanthropic activities, making it the most generous donation in the nation’s history.

About 34% of shares held by companies controlled by Mr. Azim Premji, India’s second-richest person, were irrevocably renounced and earmarked to the Azim Premji Foundation, taking the total donations to over ₹1.4 lakh crore.

Mr. Azim Premji’s Foundation, which works in the education sector and supports over 150 non-profits serving under-privileged with financial grants, has 67% of economic ownership of Wipro.

‘Pioneers of Indian technology industry’

“Azim Premji, one of the pioneers of the Indian technology industry and founder of Wipro Limited will retire as executive chairman upon the completion of his current term on July 30, 2019 after having led the company for 53 years. However, he will continue to serve on the board as non-executive director and founder chairman,” Wipro said in a statement announcing the top deck changes.

Mr. Azim Premji transformed a small hydrogenated cooking fat firm to a $8.5 billion global tech titan that is counted among India’s top IT exporters and also led the transformation of Wipro Enterprises into a global FMCG, infrastructure engineering and medical devices powerhouse, with revenues of about $2 billion.

He will remain the chairman of Wipro Enterprises and continue to chair the board of Wipro-GE Healthcare, the statement added.

“It has been a long and satisfying journey for me. As I look into the future, I plan to devote more time to focus on our philanthropic activities. I have great confidence and trust in Rishad’s leadership to steer Wipro in its next phase of growth as we move forward,” Mr. Azim Premji said.

‘Unflinching commitment’

Commenting on the changes, chairman designate Mr. Rishad Premji said Wipro has, over the decades, demonstrated that success can built on the foundation of strong values and uncompromising integrity.

“This is a testament to the spirit and dedication of thousands of Wiproites. I am very excited about our future and the opportunity to create value for all our stakeholders in these transformative times for Wipro and the technology industry,” he said.

Ashok S. Ganguly — independent director and chairman, Board Governance, Nomination and Compensation Committee at Wipro — said Mr. Azim Premji’s “unflinching commitment” to values made him an exemplar of how business and ethics can and must go together.

“His exceptional generosity makes him one of the greatest philanthropists of our time,” he added.

Mr. Ganguly further said that Mr. Rishad Premji’s understanding of the global technology industry, strong strategic orientation and diverse leadership experience make him the “right person to guide Wipro”.

“He is also best positioned to represent the interests and fundamental social purpose of the largest shareholder of Wipro,” Mr. Ganguly noted.

Malnad Gulf Association®, a prominent social and community development organization in KSA recently hosted Iftar event at Ramada Hotel Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event was organized to promote the activities conducted by Malnad Gulf Association® and to spread the message of peace and brotherhood. “I believe every great community work starts with giving and the wealth is a blessing from Almighty God which must be spent on less fortunate among the people,” said Niyaz Ahmad, who headed the Iftar event.

The association has been working for the past five years with various branches in Dammam, Jubail, Khobar, Riyadh, Al Hasa, Jeddah and Madinah with over 300 active members. The association also has India branches in Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan currently focusing on uplifting the less fortunate people among the community in the region.

The Riyadh zone president Junaid Ismail Chakmakki welcomed the gathering and the emcee of the event was Irshad Ahmed Chakmakki.

The event had a special guest, Saad Abu Nahyaan, a Saudi national, who delivered an inspiring message of community and taking care of the other around us. The event was attended by over 150 people from different walks of life.

Bengaluru: Auto driver rewarded for honesty on the job

Bengaluru:

The city Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar rewarded a 45-year-old autorickshaw driver for his honesty, when he returned a bag containing cash, ATM cards and an expensive mobile phone which was left behind by a passenger on Wednesday.

The passenger, identified as Pramod Kumar Jain, took the autorickshaw from Majestic driven by Syed Ahmed. When Jain got off at the City Railway Station, he left behind a bag containing cash and other valuables.

When Syed Ahmed noticed the bag, he waited at the same spot thinking the passenger would return to collect the bag.

When the passenger did not return even after hours, Ahmed took the bag to the city Police Commissioner’s office seeking help in returning the bag to its owner. The police checked the bag and found a visitng card of Jain.

The police him to collect the bag, which contained Rs 45,000 in cash, two ATM cards and an i-Phone.

The bag was handed over to Jain in the presence of the Commissioner.

Kumar gave Ahmed a certificate of appreciation and a cash reward.

Ahamed scores big in opening round of national bike rally

Mangalore bike racer Adnaan Ahamed proved to be the consummate racer in the opening round of the FMSCI Indian National Rally Sprint Championship here on Sunday, winning two categories in style on an action packed day.

Adnaan, winner of various national and regional championships, clocked the fastest time of 06:34.00 mins in the Group B 131cc-165cc category to win this title; he was equally invincible in the Group B 166cc to 260cc class, posting a time of 06:33.00 mins to reign supreme.

Bengaluru’s star rider Yuva Kumar trailed him in both the categories, clocking 06:36.00 mins in the Group B 131cc-165cc and 06:41.00 mins in Group B 166cc to 260cc to finish second on the podium.

Samuel Jacob with a time of 06:52.00 mins finished third in the Group B 131cc-165cc category while Vinay Prasad (07:00.00 mins) grabbed the third spot in the Group B 166cc to 260cc competition.

In the Group A up to 800cc category, it was Jeevan Gowthalli who reigned supreme after completing the 6. 2 km run with a timing of 06:49.00 mins. He was followed by Badal S. Doshi (06:50.00 mins) and Vishwas SD (06:55.00 mins) on the podium.

In the Group B 261cc to 400cc classification, Sudeep Kottary outran his competitors and clocked 07:38.00 mins to come out on top followed by Samarth (07:51.00 mins) and Hitesh Subhash Ghad (07:54.00 mins).

The Mysore District Athletic Association (MDAA) conferred the prestigious Nandi Awards to the top sports persons of Mysuru district for the year 2018-19 at a function held at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall on May 9.

The MDAA honoured the following athletes:

Suhas S. Gowda (Best Performer – Men’s section), Apsana Begum (Best Performer – Women’s section), B.Manush (Best Performer – Junior Men’s section), S. Rahul Kashyap (Best Performer – Boys U-18 years), N. Rahul Nayaka (Best Performer – Boys U-16), Likitha Yogesh (Best Performer – Girls U-16), H.S. Harshitha (Best Performer – Girls U-14).

In addition to this, Vidya Vikas Educational Trust was given the Best Sports Promoters Award. Mohammad Nouman, Senior Sports Journalist, Prajavani, Mysuru, was conferred the Distinguished Sports Journalist Award while Nagesh Panathale, Senior Photo-Journalist, Vijaya Karnataka, Mysuru, was conferred the Distinguished Sports Photographer Award.

The function was presided by Vasu, Chairman, MDAA. V.R. Beedu, Dronacharya Award winner for Lifetime Achievement in Athletics as a coach, was the guest of honour.

Den Thimmaiah Emerges Fastest Driver In Autocross

Den Thimmaiah emerged as the fastest driver at the National level 4-wheel Autocross Championship organised at Begoorkolli.

Organised at the fields belonging to the members of Chendira, Ippumada, Chekkera and Thethira families by JCI Ponnampet Golden, he emerged victorious as he clocked in at 2.02 minutes at the 850-meter rally course.

He also won the Coorg Local Open, 1,400-1,600cc category and Indian Open categories, adding three victories to his name.

In ‘The Coorg Local Open’ category, Den Thimmaiah won the first place, followed by Kokengada Darshan and Karavanda Thimmiah respectively.

Mohamad Shiek won the first place, Shrihari the second and C.K. Somanna the third place in the 800 cc category.

In the 1,001-1,400 cc category, the first place was won by Ismail Khan, second by Harshad Pasha and the third by Sparsh Nanjappa.

Den Thimmaiah won the first place while Dhruva Chandrashekar and Kokengada Darshan won the second and third place respectively in the 1,400-1,600 cc category.

The first place was bagged by Den Thimmaiah while the second and third place were won by Dhruva Chandrashekar and Roopesh respectively in the Indian Open Class.

In the XUV class, Mekerira Kariappa won the first place while Shriganesh won the second place.

In the Women’s category, Puttichanda Dayan Somaiah won the first place and Pooja Karumbaiah won the second place.

Over 40 participants took part in the event.

‘Moideen’s personality transcended politics’

There are very few people who are remembered as good politicians and B A Moideen is one of them, former Mangalore University History Prof Surendra Rao said.

Releasing ‘The I within Me’, the English version of Moideen’s autobiography in Mangaluru on Wednesday, he said that the humanitarian values that Moideen believed in and followed transcended the boundaries of politics.

Terming the autobiography rare, Prof Rao pointed out that the work was not a repository of self-praise (as most autobiographies are).

“Instead, it traces the socio-political developments of his time, in an accurate way,” he remarked.

“It seems that Moideen had a soft corner for his party. This is reflected in his opinions on the Emergency rule in India. But, all other incidents in his life are recorded by him without any prejudice. In all, his life is a lesson that no community can live an island; separated from others. This message is reflected in his work”, Prof Rao said.

Releasing the book, Urban Development Minister U T Khader said that B A Moideen had shown the way for modern-day politicians. “He was known for his idealistic politics. Sacrifices made by him are evident in the book,” he added.

The minister opined that good autobiographies in Kannada should be translated to English and vice versa.

Chief Minister’s parliamentary secretary Ivan D’Souza, journalist Abdussalam Puttige, Beary’s Group of Institutions chairman Syed Muhammed Beary and P A Engineering College Principal Dr Abdul Sharrif were present.

A family’s love for indigenous breeds of cattle

23 head of cattle are being reared in a farm house near Udupi

Three generations of a family have been conserving and breeding indigenous breeds of cattle here. The family has 23 head of cattle of Gir, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, and Ongole breeds at Uppinakote village, about 18 km from Udupi. They are being reared in the farm house of 36-year-old Mohammed Irshad Abideen. His younger brothers, Naushad Ahmed, Mumshad Alam, and Sheik Mudassar, are supporting him in running the farm house.

Explaining their love for native breeds of cattle, Mr. Abideen said his grandfather Hanif Shah Saheb used to rear Malnad Gidda. His father, Jainulla Abideen, who used to rear Jersey and HF breeds for some time, later shifted to Malnad Gidda, Punganur, and Sahiwal breeds.

Mr. Abideen was engaged in helping his father ever since he completed his second year pre-university course. However, the family’s interest in indigenous cattle took a leap when Mr. Ahmed, who works as an engineer in Saudi Arabia, had gone to attend a bull show in Brazil about nine years ago.

“Naushad saw that most of the bulls were from India. We then decided to rear and breed only indigenous breeds of cattle,” he said.

More longevity

“The indigenous breeds of cattle are less prone to ailments, have more longevity, and provide better quality of milk,” said Sheik Mudassar.

“A Sahiwal cow gives 16 to 19 litres of milk daily, while a Red Sindhi gives 15 to 16 litres, and a Gir cow 13 to 15 litres of milk. I sell them at ₹70 a litre. Many people come to buy the milk as it is good for health,” said Mr. Abideen.

The breeding of indigenous cattle is lucrative. “We sell a male calf for ₹30,000 and a female for ₹50,000. We make a profit of ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh a year,” he said. The family grows corn and grass for their cattle on 2.5 acres of land taken on lease.

Many come to his farm seeking guidance. “We guide them in rearing and breeding of cows. We want our indigenous cattle breeds to thrive,” he said. Sultan, the Ongole bull, reared here, bagged the champion trophy at the Cattle Mela held at Sindhanur in Raichur district in January.

Home chefs bag honours in cooking competition

On Thursday at The Cooking Studio, the seven finalised flexed their culinary muscles to impress the judges and take home the first prize.

The competition was judged by Masterchef and runner-up Shazia Khan, Executive Chef of Taj Vivanta Chef Selvaraju , Chef Abhijit Saha, Founding Director and Chef, Avant Garge Hospitality, and Dinesh Garg, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, TTK Prestige Ltd.

After an intense 90-minute round of cooking one savoury and one dessert using the Prestige equipment, TTK Prestige announced Bijesh K V as Bengaluru’s best home chef 2019.

The IT sales executive also won a voucher of TTK Prestige products worth Rs 50,000.

Fahima Zahid, a homemaker, and Manas Ranjan Raut, ex-Airforce Junior Warrant Officer and fitness trainer, won TTK Prestige products worth Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 as first and second runner up, respectively.

The winning dish prepared by Bijesh was Spiced Kiwi Rice, Orange Chicken with a dash of honey and Choco Orange Mug Cake with an Indian spice twist. Fahima prepared Chicken Changezi and Coconut Pana Cotta with Mango Coulis.

Manas cooked Paneer Spinach Mozerella Crispy Ball and Caramel Carrot Halwa Truffles.

Celebrating his win, Bijesh said, “This has been the most phenomenal learning experience for me. I have always been passionate about food and I am so pleased that my dishes were well appreciated.’’

Chef Shazia Khan said, “I was very impressed by the quality of dishes prepared by the participants. I was particularly struck with how Bengalureans have begun to experiment with different cuisines and embrace different kinds of food. It was a difficult choice as all the finalists were accomplished cooks, but our winners displayed risk, great technique and skill in their cooking, which ultimately enabled them to stand out from the others.”

World War II spy first Indian-origin woman to get Blue Plaque in UK

Britain’s World War II spy Noor Inayat Khan was on Monday confirmed as the first Indian-origin woman to be honoured with a Blue Plaque at her former London home.

The Blue Plaque scheme run by English Heritage honours notable people who lived or worked in particular buildings across London.

Khan’s plaque is set to go up at 4 Taviton Street in Bloomsbury, where she lived as a secret agent during the war. Khan, the daughter of Indian Sufi saint Hazrat Inayat Khan, was an agent for Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II and was captured and killed by the Nazis in 1944 at just 30 years of age.

“It is from this house that she left on her final and fatal mission. Noor gave her life in the fight against fascism and her message of peace and tolerance of all religions is even more relevant today,” said Shrabani Basu, Chair of the Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust (NIKMT).

“The blue plaque will be a wonderful addition to the area that has a special association with Noor. It will be the first Blue Plaque for a woman of Indian-origin in Britain and is a real honour,” said Basu, who has been campaigning for the plaque since 2006 as the author of ‘Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan’.

Taviton Street is close to Gordon Square, which the NIKMT chose for the installation of a memorial bust in 2012 of the spy, a descendant of the 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.

The Blue Plaque at her home is expected to be installed following building approval within the next few years.

“The Blue Plaques Panel have agreed that Noor Inayat Khan should be commemorated with a plaque. Once a nomination has been approved, it can take a further two or three years for a plaque to be unveiled,” an English Heritage spokesperson said.

“Noor Inayat Khan has deserved recognition for years. A hero who joined Britain’s effort to fight tyranny,” said Tom Tugendhat, Chair of the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee. Born in September 1914 in Moscow to an Indian father and American mother, Khan was raised in both Paris and Britain.

As a Sufi, she believed in non-violence and also supported the Indian Independence movement but she felt compelled to join the British war effort against fascism. She went on to become the first female radio operator to be infiltrated into occupied France, where she was tortured and killed at Dachau concentration camp.

The SOE was an underground force established in Britain in 1940 by war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill to “set Europe ablaze”.

It recruited men and women to launch guerilla war against Adolf Hitler’s forces.

Historial records show that despite being repeatedly tortured and interrogated, Khan revealed nothing and was executed by a German SS officer and her last word was recorded as “Liberte” or freedom.

She was later awarded the George Cross, the highest civilian decoration in the UK, in recognition of her bravery.

In recent months, Khan was also a frontrunner of a campaign for an ethnic minority personality to be honoured as the face of a redesigned GBP 50 note until the Bank of England announced that the note would feature a scientific figure.

Major Indian figures to be honoured with Blue Plaques in London include Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and B R Ambedkar, who spent time in the city during the Indian national movement against Britain’s colonial rule.
