Remembering Prof K A Siddique Hassan

KERALA / NEW DELHI :

Releasing two new projects of Human Welfare Foundation. Chief guest Dr. S Y Qureshi, former chief election commission, is fourth from left.

New Delhi :

Have you ever wondered why all philanthropic activities start from the South and why North India remains behind? When Al-Shifa Hospital has to be built in Delhi, Prof KA Siddique Hassan Sb had to come from Kerala, said Dr. SY Qureshi, Former Chief Election Commissioner.

Speaking on the occasion of Prof K A Siddique Hassan Memorial PG Scholarship Distribution Function organized by Human Welfare Foundation (HWF), at India Islamic Cultural Centre here, Dr. Qureshi said that the most worrying fact was that today Muslims were not following the teachings of Islam. Islam’s first commandment was to read. Unfortunately, Muslims are far away from education.

Dr. SY Qureshi was the Chief Guest on the occasion in which two major projects of the Human Welfare Foundation under the aegis of Vision 2026 were announced.

“Despite discrimination, if you are good at what you do, you will get an opportunity and only quality education will bring that change. The practice of fictitious degrees in northern India is destroying generations. I am pleased that the Human Welfare Foundation has taken practical steps for quality education, which are proving fruitful,” Dr. Qureshi added.

Dr. Siraj Hussain, IAS (Retd) Chairman, Human Welfare Foundation, in his presidential address, said that education as a sector has taken a hit in the last couple of years.

Quoting the Annual Status of Education Report, he said that the enrolment in private schools has gone down due to the financial crisis. This happened after many decades. Offline classes are yet to start in prominent universities. Quality of education is going to be a big challenge in the coming times.

“In my interaction with students receiving the scholarship today, I observed that the students are all committed towards their academics,” Dr. Siraj Hussain said.

He wished the students willing to pursue civil services and journalism to show true dedication, which can only bring success. He also reminisced his association with Prof K A Siddique Hassan Sb and said that the scholarships and the newly announced projects are a glowing tribute to his great personality.

H. Abdur Raqeeb, Trustee, Human Welfare Foundation, and Chairman, Indian Centre for Islamic Finance (ICIF) addressing the gathering said that he had the opportunity to work with Prof K A Siddique Hassan for five decades in different capacities.

“Prof. Siddique Hassan was an admirer of talents, and took them along and always paved the way for them to serve the society,” H. Abdul Raqeeb said.

“Under Vision 2026, he envisioned and established many NGOs. Professor Siddique Hassan’s dream was to explore the potential and immense opportunities in the community and make it beneficial for the upliftment of the marginalized sections,” He added.

Abdul Jabbar Siddiqui, Trustee, Human Welfare Foundation, on this occasion, announced the future projects of Vision 2026.

A new award has been instituted for NGOs and Social Engineers. The Best NGO and Best Social Engineer Award’ will be given to an NGO and an individual, selected by the jury, who are doing well in the social and humanitarian sector with a cash award of Rs. 500,000 and Rs. 100,000 respectively.

Announcing the projects, he said, “Fifteen years ago today, under the leadership of Prof. Siddique Hassan, a whole team was formed and we have come a long way learning many things. The biggest achievement of Prof. Siddique Hassan was shifting the focus of South Indian Muslims towards the North and diverting the resources. He always said that only through changing the North, India can change.”

Another important project which was announced today is an academic publication on the topic – Pragmatics of Community Empowerment in India: Contributions of Prof. K.A. Siddique Hassan. A national seminar will be organized in which researchers and academicians will present papers on various aspects of Prof K A Siddique Hassan’s interventions. The proposed publication will be an asset for the coming generations to understand and be guided by his life experiences and interventions.

Twenty-eight students pursuing various PG courses received the Prof. KA Siddique Hassan Memorial PG Scholarship. Human Welfare Foundation has launched the ‘Professor KA Siddique Hassan Memorial PG Scholarship to strengthen its educational activities and further expand the scholarship program. This scholarship will be given every year to the talented PG students in Humanities at the national level.

On this occasion, the CEO of the Human Welfare Foundation PK Noufal presented the performance report of the foundation.

Mr. Shafi Madni, Trustee, HWF also graced the occasion. Dr. Rizwan Rafiqi delivered the welcome address. Dr. Arif Nadvi, Manager, Health Services of the Foundation moderated the program, and Saleemullah Khan, Senior Manager, Education, proposed a vote of thanks.

Scholarships worth ₹1 cr. given to over 3,600 girls

Bengaluru, KARNATAKA :

Seventeen-year-old Bushra Parveen, Rufiya K. and Mizba are happy that they can now realise their dreams of becoming professionals. These girls are among the 3,613 students who were awarded an educational scholarship by the Bazm-e-Niswan Charitable Trust in Bengaluru on Thursday. These girl students are happy that they can now pursue courses in medicine, engineering and accountancy, which they are aiming for.

The all-woman charitable trust distributed scholarships worth ₹1.32 crore to the 3,613 deserving girls from poorer sections of society. While 1,731 beneficiaries are PU students, 1,722 are pursuing undergraduate courses. As many as 65 are diploma students and 95 post-graduate students.

According to the organisers, the trust, which has been funding the education of poor girl students in 1971, has given scholarships to over 63,000 girls so far. These girls are now successfully qualified as teachers, professors, doctors, lawyers, government officers, business women, engineers, journalists among other professions.

“The purpose is to encourage women from the deprived sections of the community to pursue higher studies. Eligibility for the scholarship is based on academic merit and economic need. Any girl wishing to apply must have scored an average of at least 50 per cent in her exams and must also have documents proving her financial status,” said Husna Sheriff, president of the trust.

“We received 4,505 online applications this year as against 3,200 last year. This 40% increase in the number of applications can be attributed to the fact that many students who had dropped out of their higher education in 2020, came back this year,” Ms Sheriff said.

Pointing out that lakhs of students dropped out of higher education during the pandemic, she said: “Realizing the dire need to support the poor and needy girls, we decided to go ahead with the scholarship program despite many uncertainties.”

How Rahmani 30 has made a difference in these Muslim students career

Anisabad, Patna, BIHAR :

Tausif, Zuarez and Qaif have qualified for admission at India’s prestigious institutes. | Photos by arrangement

At least 65 students, including one girl, of Rahmani 30 – an educational movement for underprivileged students started in Patna, Bihar by late Wali Rahmani, have qualified for admission in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Techonlogy (IITs) this year. TCN features some of them.

Bihar :

Zaurez Ahmed (17) has secured 393rd rank this year in India’s topmost engineering entrance test known as Joint Entrance Exam (Advanced). His father Shakeel runs a modest general store in Jalwara, Kewti of Darbhanga, one of the most backward areas of Bihar. His family was in no position to afford the expensive private coaching for such exams. It was Rahmani 30 that came to his rescue.

Like Zaurez, there are atleast 65 students, including one girl, of Rahmani 30 who have qualified for admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year from the main centre at Patna. All 93 aspirants from Rahmani 30 qualified for JEE (Main). Across India, there are 23 IITs having 16000 seats for which more than 1.6 lakh applicants participated in the JEE (Advanced). These are shortlisted from one million aspirants of JEE (Main).

Rahmani 30 is modelled on Super30, the first such centre for coaching students for the IIT entrance test. Rahmani 30 was founded by the renowned Islamic scholar late Hazrat Maulana Wali Rahmani in 2008. Since 2009, Rahmani 30 boasts of more than 400 successful students who have qualified for admission in different IITs. Apart from this, nearly 1000 students have qualified for JEE (Main) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the second most prestigious engineering institute of India.

Rahmani 30 offers the top 30 students free stay, food and education which costs around Rs. 60 lakhs for two years.

What is special about Rahmani 30?
“Apart from the low cost or no cost stay at Rahmani 30, the ever availability of teachers and mentors here is immensely helpful,” Zaurez told TwoCircles.net.

He said that teachers at Rahmani 30 are “quite supportive.”

Zaurez cites ‘deeni mahaul (religious atmosphere)’ at the centre as helpful in having a ‘useful break’. His EWS (Economically Weaker Section) category rank is 28 and he is quite hopeful to get Computer Science at IIT, New Delhi.

Rahmani 30 has its branches at Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Bangalore and Hyderabad. Apart from the main centre, there is a girls unit in Patna. The main centre is being run in a rented apartment ‘Anand Palace’ at Anisabad, Patna.

A normal day for studies starts at 7 in the morning and continues till 9 in the evening.

Mantasha Firdous (17), who qualified this year, is the first female student of Rahmani 30 since its establishment to compete successfully for JEE (Advanced). Generally, the girl aspirants join Rahmani 30 for the medical entrance test NEET. However, Mantasha has a knack for mathematics. She has secured an EWS rank of 4074 and hopes to get “a good branch at a good IIT’. She said that the “group of girls” at the centre was quite helpful for her to remain focused on studies.

At Rahmani 30, the aspirants are admitted for a two-year residential course. As Covid-19 hit their preparation, an online mode was learning was started in 2020. Most students attended online classes on mobile phones though there were network issues for those residing in remote areas.

Tausif Alamhas (17) secured CRL (Common Rank List) 7169 and a category rank of 1339. His father Mohammad Rashid works as a tailor and his mother is a homemaker. His family could not send him to study at any coaching centre as they charged a hefty fee. He came to know about Rahmani 30 from one of his senior and passed the test to get admission.

Talking to TwoCircles.net, he said the most helping part of Rahmani 30 is “group study where peers help in doubt clearing.”

“My motivation level only rose with the continuous encouragement from the teachers. It helped increase my willpower too,” Tausif said. His next aim is to crack the country’s top exam for civil services U.P.S.C.

Seventeen-year-old Qais Alam’s success has a twist. His father is a small farmer and suffers from poor eyesight. Qais hails from Marar, a remote village in the Khagaria district of Bihar. He didn’t have much of an idea about IITs. He appeared for Aligarh Muslim University’s entrance test for a three-year Engineering diploma course and qualified. He studied there for two years, and quit before completing his degree. This was during 2016-17. He came to know about Rahmani 30 and was selected for its two-year preparation course. He appeared for JEE (Advanced) in 2020 in his first attempt but was not satisfied with his result. He reappeared for JEE again in 2021. He bettered his All India Ranking to 6025 from his 2020’s performance of 28000th rank. His EWS rank also improved to 639 from above 3000. He is hoping to get admission at IIT Delhi or IIT Madras. He too aims to clear U.P.S.C. after graduation from the IIT.

Twenty-three-year old Atif Hussain is in his 3rd year at IIT Guwahati. He originally hails from Bihar but his family is settled in Kolkata, West Bengal. Atif’s father Phool Mohammad sells Lahti bangles (lac bangles) which and his business has been hit due to Covid-19 lockdown. His mother is a housemaker. Atif studied in Urdu medium Howrah High School and got 84% marks in his 10th Board examination. He came to know about Rahmani 30 from a senior. He said that getting admission in Rahmani 30 was the ‘turning point’ of his life. “Teaching guidance and peer study environment at Rahmani 30 was very useful,” Atif, who is fond of research and coding, said.

Though Rahmani 30 was started for helping underprivileged students crack the IIT entrance test, it has ventured into other top examinations like Medical, Commerce and Law. In its CA/CS program, out of 10 successful candidates this year, five were girls.

Rahmani 30 calls itself “a movement, not an institution” which hankers “to demonstrate that economically, socially and educationally backwards and suppressed students when given the opportunity rise to the occasion.” It is “established to be the catalyst for inspiring the minorities to aim high to seek their rightful places.”

Rahmani 30’s founder late Maulana Rahmani had a clear vision about this centre. He was of the opinion that, “Utmost service to the religion during these times is to educate our youth and upcoming generations with contemporary subjects while keeping their faith firmly established and their self-confidence high; so that, they excel in religion, are adorned with education, have an appreciation of hard work and therefore are able to navigate and make confident decisions in their life.”

Bihar’s former Director General of Police (DGP) Abhayanand has been a great help for Rahmani 30 as a mentor since its beginning. Known for his Physics teaching skills, Abhayanand is credited with starting super 30 along with Anand Kumar, to teach poor students of Bihar to crack IIT JEE.

Talking to TwoCircles.net, Abhayanad was delighted that Rahmani 30 is expanding in size and dimension in the right direction.

Late Maulana Wali Rahmani had approached him to be the mentor of this centre and he readily accepted the proposal. “There didn’t exist a good trend for education in Muslim community, particularly in the weaker sections. I thought it would be in the broader interest of the country to help such students,” Abhayanand said.

His only and interesting condition was, “I will not interfere in the administration of the centre and Maulana will not interfere in teaching at the centre.”

Maulana Fahad Rahmani, the younger son of late Maulana Wali Rahmani is the current CEO of Rahmani 30.

He told TwoCircles.net that Rahmani 30 initially started with 10 students and “in 12 years the number of students has gone up to 900.”

Maulana Fahad aims to increase the number to 15000 across India at the end of this decade. “If we consider the total number of institutions of national importance to be one lakh, its corresponding number for the Muslim community should be 15 % of it, which is roughly the population of the community in India,” he argues, adding, “To achieve this goal the community support needs to be increased. If we can arrange one donor for one student we will need 15000 donors, which is not beyond reach.”

Maulana Fahad insists that he doesn’t believe in the traditional fund collection.

On the success rate of girl students of Rahmani 30, Maulana Fahad said that it was his father and the late chairman Maulana Wali’s wish to see the girl students excel in engineering too. “Alhamdulillah, this year it has started, and it get better in the coming years.”

Meet Malik, the teashop owner VVS Laxman had tweeted about

Kanpur, UTTAR PRADESH :

MalikMPOs17dec2019

A quaint teashop on one of the dingy lanes in Sharda Nagar in Kanpur has been the talk of the town for the past few weeks. The teashop is often seen crowded. It is not the tea but the owner of the teashop Muhammad Mahboob Malik who draws the crowd now. This 29-year-old commoner  had become an overnight celebrity in the locality after he was mentioned by former cricketer VVS Laxman in one of his tweets recently.

Laxman had shared the incredibly inspiring life of Malik who has been sponsoring the education of 40 poor kids, for the last three years, using 80% of his income. Forty students study in various divisions till class 4 in his school.

Malik’s father was the only earning member in his family which had six children. His income alone was not enough to make the two ends meet. So, the kids didn’t have enough opportunities to fare well in their studies. Amidst all these struggles, Malik could only study till class 10.

Soon, Malik too began working at his father’s teashop. It was then that he began noticing how a few  kids from the poor families in the locality were roaming around or begging, without attending  school. Most of them were the children of single mothers who struggled even to feed their kids at least one meal a day. For them, sending their children to the school was unthinkable.

Malik, who saw himself in those kids, had decided to sponsor their education. He believes that he would not have ended up in the small teashop on the street and could have done more for the development of the nation had he got the opportunity for better education. It was this thought which motivated  Malik to take the significant decision to help the poor kids complete their education.

In the beginning, Malik opened coaching centers in the locality and also at Gurudev Talkies and Kanshiram Colony where around 350 children were taught for free. He even appointed teachers for a  remuneration of Rs 2,000 per day for training the kids for two hours every day. However, soon he realized that the two-hour classes were not enough to bring significant changes in the attitude or life of those poor kids.

In 2017, as instructed by a friend, Malik began an NGO called the Tujhe Salam Foundation with the sole aim to provide free and quality education for the poor children in the locality. A core team of 5 members and other volunteers are responsible for training the 40 kids. The NGO provides uniform, shoes, socks, bag and other stationery items to these students absolutely free of cost. Malik finds the money to run this school, which functions in a rented building, from his income at the teashop.

Malik, who wakes up at 5 in the morning, works in the teashop from 5.30 am to 7.30 am. After 7.30 am, his father would manage the teashop when Malik goes to the school. He returns in the afternoon and would again work in the shop from 3 pm to 11 in the night. Malik tries to save at least Rs 500 per day to meet the expenses at the school.

In the beginning, a few neighbours had criticised Malik for spending his hard-earned money on this social cause. Some had even called him mad. But the same people began appreciating him when more people came to know about his amazing effort. After Laxman’s tweet became viral, lots of people are coming to meet him at his teashop and school.

Now, Malik is all set to register his NGO and secure 80G certification that will enable tax exemption for donors. Malik wishes to work even harder so that he can extent his school to class 10 where he could give free education to at least 200 poor kids.
