Karnataka has a rich history in football, providing the national side with players like Ahmed Khan, T Shanmugam, Vajravelu and Arumainayagam who have enriched the game in the country.
But a record of their achievements are hard to come by. In a move to document the State’s contribution to the game comes S Abdul Rahman’s book, ‘Football in Karnataka — A historical perspective’.
The book was released at a function here on Saturday.
Rahman, a former national referee, traces the history of the game in the State, its evolution and other related aspects. The 360-page book also highlights the famous players who took the game to another level and represented the country at various international events, including the Asian Games, the Asian Cup and the Olympics.
In addition, it also gives a glimpse of the various national-level tournaments like the Stafford Cup, the National League and the National championships held in the State and the response it used to generate among the masses back then.

Extending their incredible unbeaten record, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis on Saturday won their eighth trophy of the season and fourth in a row, winning the WTA China Open doubles here.
The top seeds faced stiff resistance from sixth seed Taipei girls Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chan before winning 6-7(9), 6-1, 10-8 in the final which lasted one hour and 40 minutes.
In the match tie-breaker, the two pair were going neck and neck and the score was 7-7 at one stage but Sania and Hingis won three of the next four points to clinch the issue.

It was fourth title in a row for the Sania-Hingis pair.
In a remarkable run, they have dropped only two sets in their last 17 matches in four tournaments.
It was ninth title for Sania in the 2015 season and eighth with Swiss great Hingis.
They had won titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Wimbledon, the US Open, Guangzhou and Wuhan before today’s win.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal overcame his nemesis Fabio Fognini with a spirited 7-5, 6-3 victory to reach the ATP China Open final. And Novak Djokovic brushed off David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3 where Nadal stands between the Serb and a sixth title in Beijing.
Nadal has lost three times to Fognini this year, including at last month’s US Open, but he redressed the balance with a tight win.
In Sunday’s final, Nadal will be seeking his fourth trophy of a season in which he has failed to win a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2004 and has seen his ranking drop to eighth.
Paire stuns Nishikori
Meanwhile, lightning struck twice for Kei Nishikori as the defending ATP Japan Open champion was defeated by “shoeless” Frenchman Benoit Paire in an explosive semifinal.
Paire, playing in a pair of badly torn sneakers following a forlorn dash to buy some new ones, won a nail-biter 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to prove his first-round win over Nishikori at the US Open six weeks ago was no fluke.
Top seed Stan Wawrinka awaits his close friend in Sunday’s final after the French Open champion produced a clinical 6-4, 7-6 win over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller.

After weeks of gruelling dance competition and face-off, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded, the show’s eighth edition as it is called, has found a winner. Yes, the young dancer-turned-actor has defeated all the other three contestants to become the winner of the show.
Here’s what happened. The final four contestants- Mohit Malik, Faisal Khan, Shamita Shetty and Sanaya Irani had to battle it out to emerge victorious. In the first round itself, Mohit was eliminated by the judges as he delivered the weakest performance among the finalists, leaving behind the top 3- Shamita, Sanaya and Faisal.
After Mohit, in another face-off, Shamita too bid the Jhalak stage a goodbye and the final battle was between Faisal and Sanaya. Despite Sanaya’s immensely growing popularity, thanks to her popular TV shows, it was Faisal who managed to loot all hearts and become the champion. The young guy was also the winner of Dance India Dance Juniors a few years back and is a trained dancer.
The teenager was crowned by the judges- Shahid Kapoor, Malaika Arora Khan, Ganesh Hegde and Lauren Gottlieb and walked away with all the accolades and the trophy, along with the cash prize.

Plays one of the lead roles in ‘ABC’, a 16-minute short film.

He is just 11 and is all set to become a film star. Shahbaaz Saleem, son of Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru, Dr. M.A. Saleem, who also served as Mysuru City Police Commissioner, plays one of the lead roles in a short film titled ‘ABC’ directed by Madan Ramvenkatesh.
Shahbaaz Saleem plays the character of an orphan, who despite doing odd jobs, leads a happy life while actress Shruthi Hariharan plays the character of a wealthy 25-year-old entrepreneur who, despite having everything, is restless thinking she has nothing.
‘ABC’, a 16-minute short film, showcases the dichotomy between two extreme yet simple individuals. It is an empowering film which has the dexterity and optimism to resonate amongst all sections of audience. The short film is all about triumph against all odds. For some, life is only about complexities. Some walk through this road aimlessly and some actually become the bridge. ‘ABC’ is just a sweet gentle reminder of this thought.
‘ABC’ is produced by Babu Saha and Shajan Samuel.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Dr. M.A. Saleem, said that he was happy for his son to be starring in a short film and added that it was the producer Shajan Samuel, who is a good friend, who chose to cast Shahbaaz in the short film. Adding that he does not know much about the short film, Dr. Saleem said that he was proud of his son.
Appreciating the acting skills of Shahbaaz, Director Madan Ramvenkatesh said that he had lot of potential to be groomed into a good actor. He added that Shahbaaz, who has acted for the first time, was groomed for a period of one month by theatre artistes on acting and various other skills.
Madan said that he was very happy with the outcome and hoped that it would be received well by the people.

Jammu and Kashmir lost one of its best counter-insurgency police officers on Thursday, after he was gunned down in an encounter with suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in the state’s Bandipore district.
Ahmed was shot in on Wednesday when he was on a covert mission to track down Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Qasim. He was airlifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital at Badamibagh cantonment where he was declared ‘brought dead.’
“I am unable talk on camera. I might break down,” director general of police K Rajindra Kumar told NDTV .
Altaf was the recipient of the President’s police medal for gallantry and several other state bravery awards.
A resident of Kulgam in south Kashmir, Altaf is survived by his wife and two children aged four and two.
Besides top officers of the police, Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed, former CM Omar Abdullah and senior intelligence officials paid their tributes to the officer.
Here are four things you need to know about the officer :
1. He was the main man behind neutralizing Hizb-ul-Mujahideen network
The Hizb-ul-Mujahideen is a Kashmiri separatist group, designated as a terrorist organisation by India, which has been active in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989.
According to an Economic Times report, Altaf almost neutralized the Hizbul Mujahideen network in the valley between 2006-07. He also exposed another high profile militant network of a police-constable-turned-militant Abdul Rashid Shigan, who was arrested along with two other militants in 2012.
Ahmed also played a key role in operations in which HM’s top commanders Qazi Misbah-ud-Din, Muzaffar Dar, Hanief Khan were killed.
2. He played an important role in Masarat Alam’s arrest
Ahmed was also responsible for tracking and arresting separatist leader Masarat Alam during the 2010 uprising.
Alam, who is the chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Muslim League (JKML) and the general secretary of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, is believed to have mobilized people for protests during the 2008 uprising and 2010 riots in which at least 112 people had died and over 500 were injured.
“Altaf was one of our best officers. He has done tremendous work on the anti-terrorism front. It is big loss for us,” Kashmir police chief SJM Giliani told India Today.
3. Altaf’s technical surveillance skills
Ahmed, who was in his thirties, joined the department as a constable and rose through the ranks as he mastered the art of tracking militants through mobile phones.
“He took a loan to buy a laptop and started recording phone calls of militants. Soon, everyone recognized his efforts and he was heading a separate counter-insurgency unit,” an officer told The Indian Express.
He was promoted out-of-turn thrice since 2006 and was due for another one this year.
4. His work against the LeT
Altaf was credited with raiding many LeT hideouts and arresting hundreds of militants over the last ten years.
According to reports, he was the brain behind 33 per cent of the operations against militants.
In fact, it was the same terrorist organization that led to his demise as Altaf, with two colleagues, was tracking down Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Qasim, for his alleged role in the terror attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur in August, when he was shot and killed.

Bhansali Productions ventures into regional cinema with this Marathi film, directed by Swapna Waghmare Joshi of Mitwaa fame and stars Swapnil Joshi.
Talking about venturing into Marathi cinema says Sanjay Leela Bhansali, “I always wanted to be part of Marathi films. As a child, I used to watch a lot of Marathi films. Their audience is very receptive to good cinema. I have been a big fan of this cinema, be it films made by V Shantaram, Dada Kondke or Kashinath Ghanekar.”
Says producer Shabinaa Khan, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali and I are happy to announce our foray into Marathi cinema with this film. Though we can’t reveal too many details at this stage, we can confidently say that the film will be high in content and entertainment value”.
The film recently went on floors, as both producers were present at the mahurat.

Be it Hinduism, Islam, Sikh, Christianity, Jainism or Buddhism, the essence of all religions is peaceful co-existence, communal harmony and mutual understanding, opined thinker Lal Hussain Ilkal.
He was addressing the gathering at the ‘Eid Milan’ get-together organised by Anjuman-e-Hadeeqatul Adab at St. Philomena’s College auditorium here on Sunday to spread the message of unity.
Stating that festivals are celebrated to create a sense of unity among people of all religions and to drive away communal feelings, he regretted that of late, the very concept of festivals has gone awry with people attaching more importance to religious feelings.
He also regretted that India, known for Unity in Diversity, which taught the world about secularism was itself facing the menace of communal disharmony which should be shunned immediately.
Despite decades of being liberated from the British, who divided India on the basis of castes, our country continues to reel under communal feelings with repeated incidents of communal violence, he rued.
Referring to rape cases and corruption, he said of late incidents of rape and corruption were on the rise owing to emergence of anti-social elements, which has led to unrest among the people of the country.
“All the more disturbing is the fact that we do not have a Minister for supply of drinking water in our administrative system where a Minister is appointed to look after the Excise Department in each State,” Lal Hussain rued.
Earlier, the programme began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Qaari Mohammed Mateen Chishti followed by their translation into English by Anjuman member, Muazam Ali Khan Tanveer.
Syed Shafi Ahmed, President of the Anjuman, in a report richly embellished with Urdu poetry, outlined its activities much to the delight of the audience.
On the occasion, the main speaker Lal Hussain was felicitated by Altaf Ahmed, a senior functionary of Jamat-e-Islam-e- Hind while Arif Mehkri, who has been nominated as the Chairman of the Wakf Advisory Committee for Mysuru District, was felicitated by Star of Mysore Editor-in-Chief K.B. Ganapathy.
In his reply to the felicitation, Mehkri stated that it was the responsibility of the Wakf Board to safeguard the interests of the community and therefore he would do his best to protect Wakf properties and prevent their misuse.
He also assured the Anjuman that during his tenure it would get its own building for which he received a thunderous applause.
Star of Mysore Managing Editor Vikram Muthanna, in his message to the Muslim community, said that since he was not a very religious person he believed more in the goodness of human beings. So in the background of an intolerant society he was very happy that organisations like the Anjuman were promoting love and brotherhood through programmes like Eid Milan.
In keeping with the tradition of the annual Eid Milan, Dr. Irfan Ahmed Riazi recited couplets in Urdu which he had composed to promote communal harmony.
Expressing his love for the Muslim community, Dr. (Lt. Col.) Y. N. I. Anand announced that he would render free consultation service for one day every month at the Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital which was being reopened after renovation.
Alfie and his troupe enthralled the audience with their ghazals and vintage numbers from the yesteryears. Abdul Khadir, a Nigerian student of St. Philomena’s college, showcased his talent by singing Kannada and Hindi songs in his unique style.

Located at Hatta in Imphal East District, the Public Hospital and Research Institute Trust provides health care facilities to the poor socio-economic people of the state.
It was established in 2001 by the minority Muslim Community. The majority of the staff members belong to the Muslim community; however there is no discrimination on religious lines. The hospital is well equipped with a laboratory and an operation theatre.
Since its inception, it has treated around 15,000 patients from all over the state.
At present a team of 40 doctors is working in the hospital, of which 20 Doctors are specialized in different fields.
The Hospital not only helps the poor and needy but also is a perfect example of love and unity among different communities.

Deputy Commissioner Meer Anees Ahmmed directed the officials to gear up for the upcoming Tula Sankramana event at Talacauvery scheduled to be held on October 17.
Chairing a preparatory meeting on Tuesday, he asked officials to ensure drinking water supply and construct temporary toilets and maintain cleanliness at Talacauvery where thousands of devotees are expected to take part.
The DC also asked officials to make lighting arrangements at the site as the event will be held at midnight and to clear the weed grown on either side of Madikeri-Bhagamandala-Talacauvery, Napoklu-Bhagamandala road and to ensure cleanliness placing waste bins at various locations in Talacauvery.
He directed the revenue officials to conduct revenue and pension adalats and respond to the grievances of the public. “There are complaints about delay in the issuance of income and caste certificates. The issue needs to be rectified at the earliest. The applications received under the old age pension, Sandhya Suraksha yojana, widow pension, Manaswini, Maitri and other schemes should be cleared at the earliest,” he added. Additional DC M Sathish Kumar said there is a need to dispose of the applications filed seeking voter IDs within a short time frame.
