Bengaluru :

He is just 11 and is all set to become a film star. Shahbaaz Saleem, son of Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru, Dr. M.A. Saleem, who also served as Mysuru City Police Commissioner, plays one of the lead roles in a short film titled ‘ABC’ directed by Madan Ramvenkatesh.

It is an empowering film which has the dexterity and optimism to resonate amongst all sections of audience. The short film is all about triumph against all odds. For some, life is only about complexities. Some walk through this road aimlessly and some actually become the bridge. ‘ABC’ is just a sweet gentle reminder of this thought.

Appreciating the acting skills of Shahbaaz, Director Madan Ramvenkatesh said that he had lot of potential to be groomed into a good actor. He added that Shahbaaz, who has acted for the first time, was groomed for a period of one month by theatre artistes on acting and various other skills.

Madan said that he was very happy with the outcome and hoped that it would be received well by the people.

Four reasons why we should not forget Altaf Ahmed, the cop who was shot in Kashmir

Besides top police officials, Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed and former CM Omar Abdullah also paid their tributes

Jammu and Kashmir lost one of its best counter-insurgency police officers on Thursday, after he was gunned down in an encounter with suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in the state’s Bandipore district.

Nicknamed the ‘24-hour duty cop,’ Sub-Inspector Altaf Ahmed was the head of a Special Investigation Team and was considered the backbone of counter-insurgency operations in the state.

Ahmed was shot in on Wednesday when he was on a covert mission to track down Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Qasim. He was airlifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital at Badamibagh cantonment where he was declared ‘brought dead.’

“I am unable talk on camera. I might break down,” director general of police K Rajindra Kumar told NDTV .

Altaf was the recipient of the President’s police medal for gallantry and several other state bravery awards.

A resident of Kulgam in south Kashmir, Altaf is survived by his wife and two children aged four and two.

Besides top officers of the police, Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed, former CM Omar Abdullah and senior intelligence officials paid their tributes to the officer.

Here are four things you need to know about the officer :

1. He was the main man behind neutralizing Hizb-ul-Mujahideen network

The Hizb-ul-Mujahideen is a Kashmiri separatist group, designated as a terrorist organisation by India, which has been active in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989.

According to an Economic Times report, Altaf almost neutralized the Hizbul Mujahideen network in the valley between 2006-07. He also exposed another high profile militant network of a police-constable-turned-militant Abdul Rashid Shigan, who was arrested along with two other militants in 2012.

Ahmed also played a key role in operations in which HM’s top commanders Qazi Misbah-ud-Din, Muzaffar Dar, Hanief Khan were killed.

2. He played an important role in Masarat Alam’s arrest

Ahmed was also responsible for tracking and arresting separatist leader Masarat Alam during the 2010 uprising.

Alam, who is the chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Muslim League (JKML) and the general secretary of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, is believed to have mobilized people for protests during the 2008 uprising and 2010 riots in which at least 112 people had died and over 500 were injured.

“Altaf was one of our best officers. He has done tremendous work on the anti-terrorism front. It is big loss for us,” Kashmir police chief SJM Giliani told India Today.

3. Altaf’s technical surveillance skills

Ahmed, who was in his thirties, joined the department as a constable and rose through the ranks as he mastered the art of tracking militants through mobile phones.

“He took a loan to buy a laptop and started recording phone calls of militants. Soon, everyone recognized his efforts and he was heading a separate counter-insurgency unit,” an officer told The Indian Express.

He was promoted out-of-turn thrice since 2006 and was due for another one this year.

4. His work against the LeT

Altaf was credited with raiding many LeT hideouts and arresting hundreds of militants over the last ten years.

According to reports, he was the brain behind 33 per cent of the operations against militants.

In fact, it was the same terrorist organization that led to his demise as Altaf, with two colleagues, was tracking down Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Qasim, for his alleged role in the terror attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur in August, when he was shot and killed.

Star of Mysore Editor-in-Chief K.B. Ganapathy and Anjuman Vice-President Moinuddin Pasha are seen felicitating Arif Mehkri, Chairman of the Wakf Advisory Committee for Mysuru District as President of the Anjuman Syed Shafi Ahmed (extreme left) and Past President of the Anjuman Dr. K. Javeed Nayeem look on.

Mysuru :

Be it Hinduism, Islam, Sikh, Christianity, Jainism or Buddhism, the essence of all religions is peaceful co-existence, communal harmony and mutual understanding, opined thinker Lal Hussain Ilkal.

He was addressing the gathering at the ‘Eid Milan’ get-together organised by Anjuman-e-Hadeeqatul Adab at St. Philomena’s College auditorium here on Sunday to spread the message of unity.

Stating that festivals are celebrated to create a sense of unity among people of all religions and to drive away communal feelings, he regretted that of late, the very concept of festivals has gone awry with people attaching more importance to religious feelings.

He also regretted that India, known for Unity in Diversity, which taught the world about secularism was itself facing the menace of communal disharmony which should be shunned immediately.

Despite decades of being liberated from the British, who divided India on the basis of castes, our country continues to reel under communal feelings with repeated incidents of communal violence, he rued.

Referring to rape cases and corruption, he said of late incidents of rape and corruption were on the rise owing to emergence of anti-social elements, which has led to unrest among the people of the country.

“All the more disturbing is the fact that we do not have a Minister for supply of drinking water in our administrative system where a Minister is appointed to look after the Excise Department in each State,” Lal Hussain rued.

Earlier, the programme began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Qaari Mohammed Mateen Chishti followed by their translation into English by Anjuman member, Muazam Ali Khan Tanveer.

Syed Shafi Ahmed, President of the Anjuman, in a report richly embellished with Urdu poetry, outlined its activities much to the delight of the audience.

On the occasion, the main speaker Lal Hussain was felicitated by Altaf Ahmed, a senior functionary of Jamat-e-Islam-e- Hind while Arif Mehkri, who has been nominated as the Chairman of the Wakf Advisory Committee for Mysuru District, was felicitated by Star of Mysore Editor-in-Chief K.B. Ganapathy.

In his reply to the felicitation, Mehkri stated that it was the responsibility of the Wakf Board to safeguard the interests of the community and therefore he would do his best to protect Wakf properties and prevent their misuse.

He also assured the Anjuman that during his tenure it would get its own building for which he received a thunderous applause.

Star of Mysore Managing Editor Vikram Muthanna, in his message to the Muslim community, said that since he was not a very religious person he believed more in the goodness of human beings. So in the background of an intolerant society he was very happy that organisations like the Anjuman were promoting love and brotherhood through programmes like Eid Milan.

In keeping with the tradition of the annual Eid Milan, Dr. Irfan Ahmed Riazi recited couplets in Urdu which he had composed to promote communal harmony.

Expressing his love for the Muslim community, Dr. (Lt. Col.) Y. N. I. Anand announced that he would render free consultation service for one day every month at the Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital which was being reopened after renovation.

Alfie and his troupe enthralled the audience with their ghazals and vintage numbers from the yesteryears. Abdul Khadir, a Nigerian student of St. Philomena’s college, showcased his talent by singing Kannada and Hindi songs in his unique style.

The programme was compered by Dr. K. Javeed Nayeem, Past President of the Anjuman.

Coimbatore govt hospital performs 100 cochlear transplant surgeries in two years

The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital has performed 100 cochlear transplant surgeries in the last two years, becoming the first government hospital to reach this number.
The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital has performed 100 cochlear transplant surgeries in the last two years, becoming the first government hospital to reach this number.

Coimbatore :

The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has performed 100 cochlear transplant surgeries in the last two years, becoming the first government hospital to reach this number.

All the surgeries had been performed under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme, said doctors.

The CMCH is the only other government hospital, besides Madras Medical College, approved to perform cochlear transplants under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project.

Doctors said they performed their first cochlear transplant surgery on August 10, 2013 and performed the 100th surgery on October 1 this year.

“All the surgeries were successful and all the children operated have recovered and are doing extremely well,” said professor and head of the ENT department Dr V Aravindhan.

The insurance scheme makes cochlear transplant surgeries free for children between 0 to 6 years of age.

“Cochlear transplants are usually done on stone deaf children or those who are severely hard of hearing,” said ENT professor Dr Ali Sultana.

“But since the implant is something that stimulates an auditory nerve in the brain, and later fills the auditory cortex with sounds and information, children learn to use it and benefit better,” he said. “Thus they can speak on the phone and have face to face like conversations like normal people.”

Earlier cochlear transplants were being done only at private hospitals because of the implant was expensive—Rs 5.1 lakh even for the basic low-end one. Now since the scheme allots Rs 7 lakh for the surgery, government hospitals have now begun performing the surgery.

“This includes pre-surgery screenings tests, the surgery, implants, post-surgery complications and a one-year rehabilitation program for the children,” said Dr Aravindhan.

The CMCH has tied up a private institute called “Hearing Aid Centre” to provide the one-year rehabilitation post-surgery.

“They with a team of audiologists and speech therapists provide audio verbal therapy to children, who will start filling their memory cortex with sounds and noises, and slowly start repeating them as part of speech processing. Within the first three months, they start speaking simple words,” said Dr Sultana. `

While cochlear implant surgeries are being done under the state comprehensive health insurance scheme in private hospitals too, other screening and post-surgery costs start piling up, say patients.

Chennai :

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s breathtaking moves complemented A R Rahman’s soulful music as the country’s who’s who from various fields got together for football to kick off the second season of Indian Super League (ISL) with a brief opening ceremony here on Saturday.

Even as the beautiful Aishwarya sparkled by dancing to her hit numbers such as Dola Re Dola, Dhoom Dhoom, the highlight of the evening was music maestro Rahman performing the national anthem at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here.

The 45-minute programme was attended by, among others, Sachin Tendulkar, Rajinikanth, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, besides the Bachchan family.

The initial part of the programme saw a performance by Bansi Kaul’s troop.

Young Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt gyrated to some of her hits from movies like Student of the Year, besides performing to the ISL theme song ‘Let’s Football’.

The franchises owners of opening day fixture between Atletico de Kolkata and Chennaiyin FC were called on to the stage and introduced by host Arjun Kapoor, following which Aishwarya entered the scene.

Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t stop clapping as her daughter-in-law performed.

“Together with your support we will make ISL a success,” said Nita Ambani, the inspiration behind the initiative and founder chairperson of Football Sports Development.

Heartthrob Rajinikanth hugging cricket legend and Kerala Blasters’ co-owner Tendulkar and cine star Aishwarya were some of the worthy moments of the show.

The noise level reached a crescendo as two of India’s greatest icons — Rajnikanth and Bachchan — took centre stage in front of 15,000-20,000 people and shared a word or two.

Earlier, after a few hundred kids unfurled the team banners of all the eight outfits of the ISL out on the pitch — choreographed wonderfully, it was Alia’s time.

Alia, with a little help from the Master of Ceremony of the evening, Arjun Kapoor, kicked things off with a brief performance, dancing to some of her famous hits, which included ‘Radha’ and ‘Disco Deewane’ before finishing her performance with the song that has been ringing in all ears for the past couple of months ‘C’mon India, Let’s Football’.

Aishwarya, with her husband Abhishek and father-in-law Amitabh watching from the VIP section, came and danced gracefully, with a Tamil number, particularly, cranking up the decibel level.

ISL02mpoS04oct2015

However, it was an altogether different ball game when Tendulkar and Rajinikanth entered the stage.

Nita Ambani then declared the second season open.
