Inspiring Saga of Bihar Malalas

by Jawed Akhter

New Delhi:

The saga of two sisters in Bihar reminds us of the courage of Malala Yousafzai who has been fighting for girls’ education. Mehar Jahan and her younger sister Gauhar Jahan from Madhubani district of Bihar did not give up hope for higher education even after the brutal murder of their father and two brothers. They still writhe with agony when they remember the day–14 November 2010 – when their father and brothers were mercilessly murdered because of a quarrel over a piece of land.

“I was always fond of studying and stayed awake reading up till 1.30 am. Sometime after 2 a.m., I heard a noise,” she said. That “noise” turned out to be the sound of gunshots. An hour later, Gauhar’s father Mohammad Shafiqullah Ansari and two brothers were found dead. “Our father pleaded before the hooligans to leave his family and take whatever they want, but they did not listen to him,” said the two sisters. The third brother could not bear the shock of death of his father and two brothers and consequently succumbed to his death. Their younger brother, luckily, was saved as he was out of the village on that fateful night.

Mohammad Shafiqullah Ansari was a retired school teacher who wanted his daughters to be well-educated, but this was harshly opposed by his neighbours who wanted them to quit education and be married early. The sisters are survived by their younger brother, an old mother and their widowed sisters-in-law. The culprits were caught but are yet to be sentenced.

These sisters, though witnesses of the killing, kept tight-lipped for months as shock engulfed them. When they were able to get out of grief, they continued their studies. It was not possible for them to forget this incident but still they doggedly pursued their goal. Initially, they were helped by a teacher and a friend of their father, Mr. Jageshwar, who paid the expenses for their education. Gauhar appeared in the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) in 2012, and cracked it but her rank allowed her to enrol only in the dental course. But, without surrendering to despair, she again appeared in 2013 and was ranked 194. Now she is studying at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi and trying to fulfill her father’s dream. On the other hand, her sister, Mehar Jahan, is pursuing B.Tech in computer science from IETE, Delhi as she was interested in engineering. But meeting their expenses is still a challenge for them.

Inspired and motivated by their father, Mehar and Gauhar used to teach children of the poor families when they lived in their village. Mehar said, “My father never differentiated between sons and daughters. He is our role model.” Gauhar added, “After completing my education in medical science, I want to start a hospital in my village where I can serve people.”

Expressing her anguish, Gauhar said why people are unable to change their mentality towards girls? Why do they not allow their girls to get education? Girls too can be a helping hand for their parents like boys.

Rajya Sabha MP Mohammad Ali Anwar, now mentor of these girls, said, “I came to know about these girls very late. But now I will help them out as far as possible.” He added that people from our community should come forward to help such girls so that they could stand on their feet and give back to the community when they become successful professionals.

Undoubtedly, these sisters have travelled a long and painful journey overcoming their grief and trial. Their story, like Malala’s, is a great source of inspiration.

Capt. Fatima, the only Muslim woman in India to hold commercial pilot’s licence, needs financial help for additional training

She looks the typical Muslim woman next door – plain, timid and hesitant. It will be a surprise if she can drive a four-wheeler. Hold your breath – she can even fly an aircraft. Meet Capt. Syeda Salva Fatima, the only Muslim woman in India to hold the commercial pilot’s licence.

She is the shining example of Muslim women’s empowerment. What makes her ascent interesting is that she hails from the poverty-stricken old city of Hyderabad where life is a continuous struggle. Even more surprising is her decision to step into a domain which is predominantly male. But her black burqa and red scarf doesn’t betray her accomplishments.

Right from her school days, Fatima used to collect newspaper articles about aviation and pour over pictures of aircraft for hours. Her father, Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, a bakery worker, never imagined that his daughter would become a pilot one day. The dice was cast when she took admission in an institute which offered free EAMCET coaching. “What would you like to become,” the instructor asked. Pat came the reply, “Pilot”. It was a pleasant surprise to everyone present, more so to her father who struggled to make the ends meet. Seeing her determination, Zahid Ali Khan, Editor, Siasat daily, who was present at the time, asked Fatima to meet him later. “I couldn’t believe my ears when he offered to support me financially to undertake the pilot training,” recalls an overwhelmed Fatima.

After five years of rigorous training at the Andhra Pradesh Aviation Academy, Fatima obtained Commercial Pilot’s Licence, Private Pilot’s Licence and Flight Radio Telephone Operator Licence on March 11, 2013. She has logged in a total of 200 hours of flying on Cessna 152 and172, including 123 hours of solo flight. Now she has hit a rough weather. She needs to undergo Type Rating, an additional training beyond the scope of the initial licence and aircraft class training, on Air Bus A-320 or Boeing to be able to fly any aircraft. The training costs about Rs. 30 lakh which the 26-year-old couldn’t think of. But having come this far, she doesn’t want to give up. The Captain courageous has sent an SOS to the Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapathi Raju. She can be reached on: 9966073368.

She made no-polythene zone a reality

Lucknow :

If you spot clean roads around La Martiniere Girls College and a no-polythene zone in zoo, the credit for it goes to Rehana Ali. It was Rehana’s dedication and positive approach that has brought about a small but imperative change.

Rehana, who teaches at La Martiniere Girls College, formed community, ‘Protection of Environment and Animals’, 18 years back. Since then she has pursued her mission with ant-like persistence. Pointing out people for littering the roads or taking students to clean them, she has made several efforts to keep the road and surroundings clean. “It is because of my profession that I do not hesitate in accosting people. Whenever I see anyone throwing wrappers on the streets, I ask them not to do so,” she shares.

Besides raising awareness among her students, Rehana also encourages them to join the noble cause. Every week, all students of the school deposit two paper bags, which are then collectively sent to the zoo. For more than a decade now, Rehana has been supplying paper bags with the participation of her students.

Daughter of devadasi achieves doctorate degree fighting all odds

Belagavi :

Examples of children of devadasis qualified with higher education are seen very rare following poor social and financial background of these families. In such conditions, Suvarna Shanta Madar, 36 year old devadasi daughter from Kokatnur village in Athani taluk has achieved doctorate degree fighting all odds came in her way.

After completing B.Com from Karnataka University Dharwad with fifth rank in 2002, Suvarna completed her MA. She did not stop there by deciding to pursue PhD on devadasi system with which she suffered from. Karnataka State Women’s University, Vijayapur awarded her doctorate degree last year for doing PhD in the subject ‘An Economic Study of Rehabilitation Programme of Devadasis in Athani Taluk’.

She did research on five government schemes for the eradication of devadasi system and the welfare of devadasis including the schemes for providing housing, pension, rehabilitation and make them self reliant. Professor S S Peerzade in Economics department in women’s university guided her to pursue PhD.

“Pursuing the education was not a smooth task for me. I used to sell coconut, turmeric, oil, flowers and other things sitting in-front of goddess Renuka Yallamma temple in the village till the school time and after returning from school. It was the business providing us bread and butter. There are lot of hilarious experiences I have experienced in my childhood and adolescence being a daughter of devadasi. Poverty was our biggest enemy. As I had experienced the worries of devadasi system and being a daughter of devadasi I chose this subject”, Suvarna said speaking to the TOI.

In 1993-94 state government conducted the survey of devadasis and after that mother of Suvarna began getting Rs 500 monthly pension. The pension amount gave lot of solace to their day today financial problems for survival. Suvarna has two sisters and one brother. One sister is a police constable while another is a staff nurse on contract bases. Brother is daily wage worker. Suvarna works as a guest lecturer at the local 1 stgrade college.

Shanta Madar, mother of Suvarna is very happy with daughter’s achievement. Speaking to the TOI she said she wanted to look her daughter doing a permanent government job. Suvarna said “I have not married so far to achieve something. My first priority is getting a permanent job which is my mother’s dream too”, she said.

Considering the achievement of Suvarna Madar, district officer on devadasi rehabilitation programme M K Kulkarni has wrote letter to the Women’s Development Corporation fortnight ago to bring a book of Suvarna Madar’s thesis submitted for PhD and print at least 1,000 its copies. He has also appealed to honour both mother and daughter on state level platform on Women’s Day. “It’s not a small achievement for any devadasi daughter and it is encouragement for others too”, Kulkarni said.
