EmpowerIndia Hosts National Convention on Educational Renaissance Strategies

EmpowerIndia Trust organized a national convention titled “Strategies and Planning for Educational Renaissance” at India Islamic Cultural Centre on Saturday evening.

Mohammed Khalid Khan, Founder Trustee and Chairman of EmpowerIndia, emphasized the transformative power of education, stating that it elevates, develops, and enlightens individuals while empowering them to fight for their rights, honour, and survival. He expressed concern that India is not ranked among the top 10 most educated countries in the world, and highlighted the need to prioritise education to empower both the community and the nation.

As part of its efforts, EmpowerIndia Trust has launched a pilot project, establishing a vocational training centre offering various paramedical courses such as Diplomas in Hospital Nursing and Midwifery, Medical Lab Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Radiology and Imaging Technology, Physiotherapy, Electrocardiogram, and Emergency Treatment. The trust also aims to establish a Law College of excellence.

The conference was chaired by Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood, Chairman of Zakat Foundation of India, who urged the utilisation of state and central government schemes, noting that many students are unaware of these beneficial programmes. He stressed the importance of making students aware of such schemes through proper counselling and information sharing.

Prof. Rehan Khan Suri, Director of Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Jamia Millia Islamia, highlighted that education is not a charity but a responsibility. He pointed out that Right to Education Act, 2009 provides for free and compulsory education for children aged 6-14, yet the educational attainment among minorities remains below 6%. He called for focused collaboration and support from organisations at the district level to improve educational outcomes.

Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, former Deputy Speaker of the Exile Government of Tibet, emphasized the importance of a learning environment at home, blending classical and modern holistic education to cultivate kindness and enlightenment in children.

Dr. Shakeel Ahmed Qureshi, Senior Advisor at Ministry of Education, stressed that education brings global recognition and reiterated the adage that “the pen is mightier than the sword.” Dr. MM Ansari, a scholar and former interlocutor for J&K, raised concerns about the Muslims’ lag in educational attainment, falling 10 years behind the national average. He advocated for affordable education, teacher training programmes, and a collaborative approach to address high dropout rates in higher education.

Mohammad Talha Hanfi, Group Chairman of FuGen Group of Companies, highlighted the need to address core issues at the grassroots level for the underprivileged. He emphasized capacity building and shared his vision of converting beneficiaries into benefactors by using profits from IT sector projects and donations to support education for needy students.

The event also featured addresses from several prominent figures, including Prof. Dr. Vipin Kumar Tripathi of IIT, Moulana Ghulam Rasool Baliyawi, a JDU leader, social activist and educationist Sameen Adeeb, Supreme Court advocate ZK Faizan, and other notable scholars and educators.

VC Jamia Hamdard Unveils Book on Muslim-Established Educational Institutions in India

A new book titled “Educational Institutions Established by Muslims in India (1986-2016),” authored by Naaz Khair and commissioned by Institute of Objective Studies, was unveiled by Professor Afshar Alam, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, at the IOS auditorium here Saturday.

While releasing the book, Professor Alam highlighted its comprehensive examination of educational institutions founded by Muslims in India over a thirty-year period.

He noted, “The book offers insightful analysis of how these institutions have contributed to the educational and social progress of the Muslim minority, focusing on both the challenges faced and the achievements made. It also underscores the significant role of institutions like Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia in providing access to higher education for Muslim students, who are often marginalized in India’s broader educational landscape.”

Naaz Khair, the author and an independent consultant in education and social sector, shared key findings from the book. She revealed that, between 1986 and 2016, Muslims established 21,338 recognized and unrecognized private schools, including madrasas, as well as seven UGC-approved private universities, 111 UGC-approved private colleges, 3,660 minority-run private schools, colleges, and universities, and 226 minority-run technical institutions.

Professor Furqan Qamar from JMI’s Department of Management Studies praised the publication, noting, “This is an excellent starting point, but it’s crucial to continue updating this data. The creation and regular updating of a comprehensive database of Muslim-established institutions will benefit researchers both nationally and internationally.”

Professor M. Akhtar Siddiqui, a retired faculty member from JMI’s Faculty of Education, remarked, “This study firmly establishes that Muslims have made significant contributions to nation-building, despite criticisms to the contrary. It shows that the community values education and is committed to the nation’s progress.”

Professor Madhu Prasad, a retired professor from Zakir Hussain College, reflected on her own experience, stating, “I come from an institution, Zakir Hussain College (formerly Madrasa Ghaziuddin), which represents the rich history of Muslim education in India. For over 300 years, it has been a leading institution for higher education in North India, and its legacy is a testament to the Muslim community’s enduring contribution to the country’s educational landscape.”

RTI activist and researcher Saleem Baig discussed the difficulties encountered in gathering data for the book, noting the reluctance of stakeholders and government bodies to share information about Muslim-established institutions.

Razack Family Donates Rs 5 Crore to St Joseph’s Boys’ High School for Infrastructure Development

The unveiling of the ‘Razack Family Block’ plaque in September 2024 marked a significant moment for the school. Present at the event were prominent alumni, including Irfan Razack, Managing Director of Prestige Estates Projects (Batch of 1968), along with his brothers Rezwan Razack (Batch of 1970) and Noaman Razack (Batch of 1974).

The generous contribution will fund crucial developments at the school, including the construction of a playground with a double basement and additional classrooms. These infrastructure upgrades aim to align with the new National Education Policy (NEP) and address longstanding challenges such as parking limitations in Bengaluru’s Central Business District.

During the ceremony, Irfan Razack expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is a privilege to give back to my alma mater, which has shaped me into who I am today. Your recognition of my efforts is humbling, and I am deeply grateful.” The sentiments were echoed by Rezwan Razack and other family members, all underscoring their continued commitment to supporting the school’s growth.

Jayashree Prince Jacob, a teaching faculty member at SJBHS, highlighted the deeper meaning of the Razack family’s donation, stating, “This contribution represents more than just financial support. It is a testament to the lasting bond between the school and its alumni, inspiring future Josephites to uphold the tradition of giving back.”

In a statement, the school reflected on its cherished motto, “Fide et Labore” (Faith and Toil), emphasizing that the values imparted through the years continue to resonate with the alumni. “Once a Josephite, always a Josephite” remains more than a saying—it embodies the unyielding love and loyalty of the Josephite community.

Tayyaba Kausar, Daughter of a Tailor, Earns Prestigious ₹2 Crore Scholarship

Mumbai’s 16-year-old prodigy fights all odds to study in Singapore

Mumbai :

Sheikh Tayyaba Kausar Muhammad Arif, a 16-year-old student from Holy Mother English High School in Malvani in the northern area of Malad in the country’s financial capital, has secured a ₹2 crore scholarship to study at the United World College (UWC) in Singapore, starting August 10. Her achievement has brought immense pride to her family and community.

Tayyaba scored 93% in her SSC exams despite her modest background. Her father is a tailor, her mother a homemaker, and she has two younger sisters. Her disciplined study routine included early mornings and late nights, demonstrating her dedication.

Her journey began in October 2023 with an essay competition, followed by a rigorous selection process and a challenging interview in Pune on January 20. “Without the support from my school and NGOs, the documentation process would have been daunting,” she said.

Principal Rafiq Siddiqui of the Holy Mother School played a crucial role. He recalled how Tayyaba, who had to leave her previous school due to unpaid fees, joined Holy Mother in the sixth grade. “Moved by her determination, we assured her she’d never have to worry about fees again,” he said. NGOs like Smile Foundation and Teach for India also provided vital support.

In an interview, Tayyaba expressed her gratitude: “I thank Allah, my parents, my sisters, my principal, and the NGOs. I am excited to study in Singapore but aim to return and serve my country.”

Tayyaba’s journey from Mumbai’s Malvani to securing a ₹2 crore UWC scholarship is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and community support. Her success is an inspiration, showing that with determination and the right support, anything can be made possible.

Malegaon sees the blossoming of New Educational Institutions under Ahmed Naseem Meena Nagri Education Society

The educational journey of the Ahmed Naseem Meena Nagri Education Society is set to become a defining milestone for New Malegaon, thanks to the remarkable efforts of Shakir Sir. In honour of his legacy, Shakir Sir has been instrumental in establishing new educational institutions including the Abdul Shakur Pre-Primary and Primary School and Junior College, Millat Urdu High School, Insha Paramedical College and Diploma Courses. The inauguration ceremony of these institutions was held near Labbaik Hotel in the Malda area of New Malegaon. The residents of Malegaon are expected to benefit greatly from these new facilities.

The foundation stone ceremony of Millat Urdu High School was conducted by General Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Umrain Mahfuz Rahmani. Maulana Rahmani acknowledged the significant contributions of Shakir Sir, saying, “He has been a dedicated teacher, and with the establishment of this institution, he has gifted the community a place of learning that will endure even after him.”

Maulana Rahmani also highlighted that the late Maulana Syed Wali Muhammad Rahmani had close ties with Shakir Sir.

Inaugurating Insha Paramedical and IT College, Dr. Saeed Farani remarked, “This campus offers education from primary levels to medical training. Paramedical services are now indispensable, serving as the backbone of healthcare without which medical care cannot function.”

Dr. Farani stressed that medicine ensures success in both this world and the hereafter if pursued with sincerity. Highlighting Malegaon’s rise as a medical hub, attracting patients from a 150-200 km radius, he noted the growing presence of hospitals and increasing interest from corporate healthcare. However, these hospitals will need qualified paramedical staff, now mandated by the government. He urged residents to enrol in paramedical courses to boost their employment prospects.

Dr. Ayub Khan Poonawala, speaking on the significance of paramedical education, noted that the era of paramedical and IT training has begun. “This is the sixth paramedical college being established after Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. Paramedical students have a 100% job placement rate. Malegaon, known as a city of skilled workers, will now benefit from this initiative.”

Headmaster Al-Haj Qureshi Mukhtar also addressed the gathering saying, “In an era where educational institutions are becoming commercial enterprises, establishing such a purposeful campus in the suburbs is truly commendable.”

Talented Muslim Girls Honoured on APJ Abdul Kalam’s Birth Anniversary

Chief guest, Kailash Sharma, a senior leader from the state Congress committee, along with other distinguished guests, shed light on Dr. Kalam’s inspirational life journey. Born on October 15, 1931, into a modest Muslim Ansari family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalam rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most revered scientists and leaders. His immense contributions to India’s space and nuclear programmes were praised during the event.

Notable figures, including Madrasa Anjuman Islamia President Majid Salim, Trade Federation General Secretary Kanhaiya Lal Chittoda, District Congress Committee Vice President Zakir Mansoori, Councillor Mohammad Sharif Rangrez, and Madrasa Board Deputy Chairman Shahid Iqbal Bhati, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing Dr. Kalam’s enduring legacy.

Minority Welfare Department gives students time till Nov 11 to apply for hostel accommodation

The deadline to submit applications for entry into the post-matriculation boys’ and girls’ hostels under the Minority Welfare Department for the current academic year (2024-25) has been extended to November 11.

Pre-university (PUC), parallel course, professional course, graduation and post-graduation students may apply for accommodation at the hostels, under the State Scholarship Programme, the authorities have said in a press release, adding that the applications are provided on the State Hostel Portal (SHP) site.

Additional information on applying for accommodation at the hostels is available on the SHP site. The applicants may also approach the government personnel at the district and taluk offices of the Minority Welfare Department, the press release has stated.

When you first see 8-year-old Mohammed Ashfaque or 7-year-old Mariam Adil, along with other students assembling robotic cars, understanding the processes to build them, and participating in races to see how they work practically, you might think the students are from one of the top-notch schools in the city. But in reality, they study at Ijma International Model School, which is not only small but also situated in the lanes of Topsia, a Muslim ghetto in Kolkata.

However, meeting experts from different fields of international repute to learn new technology at a tender age has become a routine for them.

The boys wearing skull caps and the girls wearing hijab speak fluent English. They were seen listening to the administrators during this weekend..

“As you have learned to assemble robotic cars and tried to understand their engineering, we will also give you an idea of how cars move without drivers and how WiFi-enabled cars function,” said Nafis Ahmed Khan to the excited children. Khan added, “The purpose of the workshop was to give them an insight into robotic cars, how their connections work, and how to make battery connections so that they have a better understanding of how controlled cars work.”

The pupils not only took part in the two-hour-long robotics workshop but their curriculum follows CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) Board too. They learn mathematics, science, and computers as well as the Arabic language and Deeniyat. Every classroom has air conditioners, and there is a smart big screen for students. The school not only holds workshops on the latest technologies but also brings experts from different fields to interact with curious young minds.

Experts visit

There is a long list of experts from different fields from India and abroad, including Professor Ewaz Al-Jum’aa Al-Laila from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Mufti Obaidulla Asadi, Chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee, Islami Fiqh Academy; Muhammad Mushtaque Nadwi, Judge in the lower court, Doha, Qatar; Maulana Jaafar Hasani Nadwi, Deputy General Secretary, Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow; Wing Commander (Retd) Shamim Akhtar; NUJS Dean Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan; Advocate Khurshid Alam; Mamoon Akhtar, Founder and Chairman of Samaritan Group; Wali Rahmani, Founder of Umeed Academy; Chartered Accountants Faiz Anwar and Asif Ali; NEET Basket Founder Noor Alam; and social activists Manzar Jameel, Athar Firdausi, Umar Owais, Abu Talha Jamal Qasmi, Manzar Imam, and Alam Jamshed, who have met the kids from time to time over the last two years.

“Our students will compete with any other school’s children. We are preparing them so they can remain ahead in every aspect. The future belongs to Artificial Intelligence (AI), so these kids, when they grow up, will not only be well-versed with the latest technology but will also be able to think beyond it and may contribute something new to mankind,” the director, Dr Sarfaraz Adil, told eNewsroom. Dr Sarfaraz revealed the school’s plan to have a robotics lab in the school.

Role of Ijma Charitable Trust

Starting in the year 2023, the classes range from Nursery to 3rd grade. It has around 100 students. Run under the Izma Charitable Trust, it also has a provision for giving scholarships to 20 percent of the total students for each session. Ten percent can get a half-freeship in the fees, and the other ten percent can get a full freeship. “We have a plan to run the senior secondary school, and we have got land for this as well,” added the director.

Message for Parents

Mariam Adil is the daughter of the director. Her presence, according to the director, gives a message that unlike other small schools, the sons and daughters of the faculty also study here. This move will make parents confident about the fact that there will be no compromise in the education imparted at the school.
