Researchers document 43,118 butterflies in Dakshina Kannada

Painted Sawtooth (Prioneris Sita)

The ‘winged beauties’ are a good indicator of the ecological health of a habitat

Butterflies are excellent communities to monitor the ecological health of a place. A team of researchers from Mangalore University, in collaboration with other two institutes, has identified and documented 43,118 butterflies (individuals) belonging to 175 species in Dakshina Kannada.

Of them, 22 species were habitat specific. The researchers were pursuing the ‘winged beauties’ for the past two years.

Yellow Pansy (Junonia Hierta)

The team comprised M. S. Mustak, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Zoology, Mangalore University and Deepak Naik, a PhD student at Mangalore University. The study was done in collaboration with Shyam Prasad Rao, a researcher at Yenepoya Deemed to be University, Mangaluru and Krishnamegh Kunte, a researcher from the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru.

The butterflies were identified at eight heterogeneous landscapes ranging from coastal sand dunes to agricultural fields to botanical gardens to semi-evergreen forests on the foothills of the Western Ghats.

Sahyadri Lacewing (Cethosia Mahratta)

“Using indicator value analysis, 22 habitat-specific and several shared indicator species were identified. The study also documented larval host plants, and over 283 habitat-specific host-butterfly species pair interactions,” Mr. Mustak told The Hindu.

Their research paper – study on abundance and habitat preference of butterflies of the Western Ghats – has now been accepted for publication by the Journal of Insect Conservation, an international journal devoted to the conservation of insects and related invertebrates.

Shiva Sunbeam (Curetis Siva)

The researchers said that butterfly communities indicate the type and state of a habitat, and can easily be conserved by the restoration of habitats with diverse host plants. They have great public appeal and easy to work with, and are the indicators of a healthy ecosystem.

Mr. Mustak said, “People usually cherish abundant and widely distributed butterflies, but fail to appreciate less common or habitat-specific species. Our study gives quantitative data on the butterflies of the Western Ghats, which is essential for public awareness and outreach.”

Malabar Tree Nymph (Idea Malabarica)

The team conducted a systematic transect survey for two years to get baseline data on the abundance patterns and habitat preferences of butterflies of the Western Ghats. The study gives an important dataset for future assessment, monitoring and conservation of butterflies of the Western Ghats.

Sahyadri Birdwing (Troides Minos)

The study showed interesting patterns. Some of the most abundant species are Common Crow (Euploea Core), Common Emigrant (Catopsilia Pomona), Common Four Ring (Ypthima Huebneri), Tawny Coster (Acraea Terpsicore), Lesser Grass Blue (Zizina Otis), Rustic (Cupha Erymanthis), and Chocolate Pansy (Junonia Iphita)

Blue Oakleaf (Kallima Hosfieldii)

Some species, though very abundant, are restricted to specific habitats. For example, Tawny Coster (Acraea Terpsicore) is common in coastal regions, Common Bush Hopper (Ampittia Dioscorides) in found in agricultural habitats, and Malabar Tree Nymph (Idea Malabarica) in semi-evergreen forests. Some species, such as Common Mormon (Papilio Polytes) and Common Leopard (Phalanta Phalantha), though rare, are found everywhere.

Masjid Al Awali, also known as Masjid Kulliyatul Lugha, is located some 15 kilometres to Masjid al-Haram – the Grand Mosque which is home to Holy Kaaba, and some 9 kilometres to Umm al Qura University Campus in Makkah.

Though it is not the first time when an expatriate or a student of foreign-origin has been appointed as Imam in a Saudi mosque, it is a rarest of rare moment as the Kingdom follows a very strict rule while making appointment to the post.

What makes appointment of Hafiz Aiman as Imam in Saudi Arabia mosque even more significant is also because of the Quality Assessment and Quran Recitation skill requirement for the post that are of very high standards.

He had returned to Saudi Arabia in December last when Saudi Arabia lifted the travel ban on flights from India.

Incidentally, Hafiz Aiman’s younger brother Osama and elder brother Abdul Moeed too are Hafiz and acclaimed Qaris. Abdul Moeed also has to his credit the tag of being the first student from Malegaon who got admission at Islamic University of Madinah for higher studies.

The siblings’ Father Qari Abdul Mateen and Grandfather Qari Abdus Samad are also acclaimed Qaris. Qari Abdus Samad was in fact a regular invitee as judge at national and international level Quran recitation competitions till his death in March 2013.

“The entire family of Hafiz Aiman is hailed for its contribution towards teaching of Quran and Tajweed”, Faizee Shahid, who looks after the management of Jame Masjid Ahle Hadees Motipura, said.

Trip with an all-woman team helps Koyilandy native to discover her innate self

Koyilandy, KERALA :

The team had 15-members, all women, of whom Shahana had acquaintance with only a single member, Suhaila T, the trip coordinator

Shahana Nizar with children at Pandhi Ka Par village in Rajasthan

Kozhikode :

The story of 32-year-old Shahana Nizar has a slight similarity to Mudrita, the noted Malayalam novel of 2021 penned by Jisa Jose. Mudrita unfolds through the train trip of nine women who were strangers to each other but got together through an online group. Shahana’s maiden 10-day trip, without the company of her family, to Rajasthan by train concluded on December 30.

The team had 15-members, all women, of whom Shahana had acquaintance with only a single member, Suhaila T, the trip coordinator.

Hailing from a conservative Muslim family of Koyilandy and mother of 10-year old and four-year-old boys, she had many odds against taking such a trip. But finally, she pulled it off. “Till the moment I boarded the train from Kozhikode railway station, I was not sure I would make it. There were so many obstacles. But my passion for travelling self-liberating me besides, the solid support from my spouse made it happen,” beams Shahana.

The group had 16-year old Haniya Haris to 39-year old Kadeeja, who were from Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Resorting to a budget tour, the women used public transport service and stayed mostly in youth hostels and residences of acquaintances in Rajasthan.

“It was difficult for me to travel in train for so many days. I was a person who loathed using public toilets. But during the trip, I had to even spend my period days on the train. Surprisingly, I myself adjusted to all of these due to the sheer pleasure travelling gave me. After reaching home and looking back, I found I had discovered myself, the liberal soul in me who wants to fly farther, recharge and come back,” says Shahana, an English Literature graduate.

“Don’t want to be like mother’

Shahana reminisces that throughout her life, she saw her mother tied up in domestic chores and taking care of kids and her husband at home. “Watching her life, I had taken a strong decision then that I will not be like her. That spark was within me which poured out in the form of musings and scattered lines on Facebook. But there was not an attempt till now. But for my marriage, I think I cannot make a free trip without the ‘care’ of family or relatives. Now, I am brimming with confidence and ready to backpack any moment,” she says.

While Shahana was on tour, her four-year old son was hospitalized for a day but she came to know it after reaching home only as her husband Nizar Mullasserry managed it.

The women team’s travel was not all smooth. They had to run with heavy bags through railway platforms in Ajmer in odd hours and many such hardships. The team roamed around Mount Abu, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Barmer and had spent wonderful days at remote Rajasthani villages like Pandhi Ka Par and Viradka Par.

Fatima Sheikh Birth Anniversary: Google Doodle Pays Tribute to India’s First Muslim Woman Teacher

Google is celebrating the 191st birth anniversary of Indian educator and feminist icon Fatima Sheikh, who is widely considered to be India’s first Muslim woman teacher, by featuring a doodle for her. Alongside fellow pioneers and social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, Sheikh co-founded the Indigenous Library in 1848, one of India’s first schools for girls.

Fatima was born on this day in 1831 in Pune. She lived with her brother Usman, and the siblings opened their home to the Phules after the couple was evicted for attempting to educate people in lower castes. The Indigenous Library opened under the Sheikhs’ roof.

Here, Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh taught communities of marginalized Dalit and Muslim women and children who were denied education based on class, religion, or gender.

The Phules’ efforts to provide educational opportunities to those born into lower castes became known as the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truthseekers’ Society) movement. As a lifelong champion of this movement for equality, Sheikh went door-to-door to invite the downtrodden in her community to learn at the Indigenous Library and escape the rigidity of the caste system.

She met great resistance from the dominant classes who attempted to humiliate those involved in the Satyashodhak movement, but Sheikh and her allies persisted.

Although Sheikh’s story has been historically overlooked, the Indian government shone new light on her achievements in 2014 by featuring her profile in Urdu textbooks alongside other trailblazing Indian educators.
