Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in boxing Mohammed Hussamuddin with SATS Chairman A. Venkateshwar Reddy in Gold Coast on Friday.
‘This serves as an inspiration to prepare for bigger events’
Mohammad Hussamuddin from Nizamabad has become the first-ever boxer to win an individual medal (bronze in 56 kg) from Telangana in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Friday.
The success story of Hussamuddin is another gentle reminder of the abundance of talent in the State that badly needs to be nurtured. The gifted pugilist, the youngest of six bothers, was lucky in a way to be mentored by his father Mohammad Samsamuddin himself. He is the same person who also groomed woman boxer Nikhat Zareen (former World Youth gold medallist) in her formative years in Nizamabad.
“We are delighted that he is the first boxer from Telangana to achieve this. We knew it was coming, but were hoping for a much better performance,” exclaimed the proud father.
For someone who made an impact in the 2011 Youth Nationals with a silver and clinched a gold in his maiden Senior Nationals last year, Hussamuddin has always been tipped as one of the potential champions by SATS coach Omkar Yadav, who had seen his progress since childhood.
But what clearly changed his career graph for the good was when he joined the 1 EME Centre before moving over to the famed Army Sports Institute in Pune to be trained by Narender Rana and Kuttappa later.
Naturally, 24-year-old Hussamuddin is pleased, if not overjoyed, with his bronze in the ring on Friday. “I was targeting gold, but had to be content with bronze. Anyhow, this will remain a huge inspirational moment for me as I prepare for the bigger events later this year, including the Asian Games,” was what the boxer conveyed to SATS Chairman A. Venkateshwar Reddy, who was there to cheer the boxer.
“No doubt this is the beginning of a new chapter in my career and I am hopeful of winning in bigger events given the kind of motivation I get from this one,” was his message from Gold Coast when the SATS official made it a point to personally congratulate him.

It was a grand homecoming for her after five long years in the United States where she had moved to after marriage.
When she had shifted in 2013, she was worried about what fate in the foreign country would do to her passion for cricket.
However, for 33-year-old Jhansi girl Zeenat Kausar , life in the US brought unparalleled success. She has been playing as a medium pace bowler with the American women’s cricket team since October 2015.
Now a mother of an infant, her sporting talent has taken her to international matches with Pakistan and England.
Married to a US-based software engineer who is also from Jhansi, Zeenat was born and brought up in the small town but had big dreams. Though a science teacher, she had a keen interest in cricket, thanks to her elder brother. In school and college, Zeenat represented Jhansi district woman’s cricket team in 2005 in Allahabad as vice-captain. She also played zonal-level cricket representing the winning central zone in 2007.
In 2008, she played for UP in the All-India Indira Gandhi Priyadarshani Memorial Cricket Tournament. The team was the winner.
Besides, Zeenat has played in a number of district and state-level cricket tournaments during her school and college time and has also participated in UP women’s cricket coaching camp in 2009. In the US recently, Zeenat and her team members had an opportunity to interact with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar .
“When my marriage was fixed, I was shattered, thinking that my cricketing career will end. But destiny held something else for me. In America, I got associated with local cricket clubs and a day came when I got this opportunity to play from the country itself,” said Zeenat, who is on a long vacation to meet her parents.
During her stay, she wants to motivate young boys and girls to pursue their dreams and encourages them to move ahead.

To promote the spirit of womanhood, a car and two-wheeler rally was organized at Awadh Girls’ Degree College, recently.
Organized by the alumnae association of the college, the rally was flagged off by Brijesh Pathak, cabinet minister, Law, Justice and Alternate Energy Resources, Namrata Pathak, former chairperson, UP Women’s Commission and a social activist, and Upma Chaturvedi, principal of the college. “It gives me a great pleasure to be a part of this event. The rally started from the college campus and covered five major checkpoints in the city which were provided to the participants in the form of riddles.

Iqbal Siddiqui, born December 26, 1974, was a Maharashtra stalwart through the 1990s. Abhishek Mukherjee looks at a man whose solitary Test resulted in multiple records for him.
The ‘One-Test Wonder’ tag does not sound something to be very proud of. Iqbal Rashid Siddiqui, however, had a remarkable one-off outing. It was not a remarkable performance, but he created multiple records in the process. But all in due course of time.
Siddiqui was reminiscent of Kapil Dev in more ways than one. He was stout, had an imposing frame, could generate deceptive pace, could swing the ball in air and gain significant movement off the pitch, and had that rare ability to run through a side on flat tracks — an attribute Indian pacers are not known for.
His 90 First-Class matches, mostly for Maharashtra, earned him 315 wickets at 30.08 — a number that reflects his inconsistency more than anything else. A decent batsman, he also scored 1,343 runs and had scored a hundred. He was also an excellent outfielder.
Maharashtra days
Born in Aurangabad, Siddiqui made his way quickly through the Under-16s and Under-19s. He made his First-Class debut in 1992-93, and stormed through Tamil Nadu at Bhusawal in the second innings with 6 for 59 and 4 for 71 in his second match.
He found a berth in the India Under-19s side for their 1994 tour of England. He had an excellent outing in the first Youth Test at Taunton against England Under-19s, taking five for 75 and four for 88; his tally included wickets of Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan, and Anthony McGrath. Siddiqui headed the Indian bowling charts on the tour with 18 wickets at 24.
However, inconsistency caught up with him, and his career seemed to be fading away by 1995-96 (he even shifted to Hyderabad), though he found a place in the Irani Cup squad. Then came the match at Pune in 1997-98, where he routed Baroda with 7 for 49 and 5 for 30. The match figures of 12 for 79 remained his career-best.
Sent in as night-watchman against Orissa at Pune next season, Siddiqui slammed 116 from 292 balls. He ran through Saurashtra the next season with a career-best 8 for 72 at Pune (he took 2 more in the next innings). Consistent performances in the domestic circuit earned him a call-up for India A in their match against the touring Englishmen at Jaipur.
Siddiqui removed Mark Butcher after Sunil Joshi declared the innings closed at 233 for 9. But his real impact came in his second spell, when he removed Vaughan, Mark Ramprakash, and Andrew Flintoff in the space of 12 balls. He finished with 4 for 53, and gave the hosts a 63-run lead. Craig White bowled out India A for 109. This time Siddiqui removed Trescothick, but the tourists reached home with 3 wickets in hand. The selectors liked what they saw: Siddiqui made his debut in the first Test of the series at Mohali.
One Test, many records
To be fair, the selectors were harsh on the Indian bowlers after a dismal tour of South Africa. They brought in two debutant opening bowlers (Tinu Yohannan would partner Siddiqui), while in Sanjay Bangar they drafted in an all-rounder. England also had two new men in James Foster and Richard Dawson.
England got off to a good start and reached 172 for 2 when Siddiqui claimed his only international wicket: Graham Thorpe edged one to VVS Laxman at third slip. Harbhajan Singh then bowled a fantastic spell, and the English were bowled out for 238. Deep Dasgupta, opening due to Virender Sehwag’s ban, scored a hundred; Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar both scored eighties; and India secured a 231-run lead.
Siddiqui, having taken 1 for 32 in the first innings, got only 8 wicketless overs in the second as Anil Kumble routed England for 235. However, he stunned Mohali by taking an exceptional tumbling catch of Trescothick at deep fine-leg off Yohannan. With only 5 to chase, Sourav Ganguly sent Siddiqui to open with Dasgupta; Siddiqui hit a boundary off the first ball from Matthew Hoggard and took a single from the second, and that was that.
In the process Siddiqui became the 12th player (and second Indian, after Manoj Prabhakar) to open batting and bowling on debut. He also remains the only cricketer to do the same in his only Test, and the second person to play the winning shot in his only Test after Jeff Moss.
[Note: Pat Cummins has also played the winning shot it in the only Test he has played so far, but he may play again.]
Later days
Siddiqui never played another Test. He played domestic cricket till 2004-05 before calling it quits. His last season saw him score 59 and take 5 for 68 against Assam at Aurangabad. He also played for Sevenoaks Vine in Kent Cricket League Premier Division in 2006, finishing with most wickets for the club (20 at 28.75).

Tourney to be held in Malaysia from April 16
The road to success for this tennisprodigy from Guntur, was not an easy one.
For 16-year-old Sk. Mubhashira Anjum, now ranked 675 in the World’s Junior tennis circuit, the journey from the clay courts in Guntur to the global circuit was filled with grit and hard work. Mubhashira (U-16) will take part in the Junior Fed Cup set to begin at Kuching in Malaysia from April 16.
She had earlier taken part in the Under-14 tennis tourney organised by All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in April 2016.
Born in 2002, Mubhashira began taking lessons in tennis on the clay courts of B.R Stadium and later under the guidance of coaches such as Sk. Ahammad. She began to show her mettle in the tennis tourneys.
Powerful strokes
Whether hitting ground strokes with ferocious power or dropping the volley at nets, she showed her class early. “She was the pick of the boys and girls and her powerful ground strokes and an ability to cover the court stood out. For a girl of her age, she had an amazing fitness level,” recalled Mr. Ahammad who now coaches boys and girls at Officers Club, Guntur.
Her father Sk. Baji is a small time trader but the family had moved to Hyderabad to enable Mubhashira to take coaching at Sania Mirza Tennis Academy.

21-year-old Afshan Ashiq and team met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.
Ashiq, who defends the 24-foot-long and 8-foot-high goal post for her team, said the youth in Kashmir Valley was talented and all that they required was a platform. (Photo: Twitter)
New Delhi:
From the streets of upmarket Srinagar, where she emerged as the face of angry women students throwing stones at security forces, it was a dream walk for football lover Afshan Ashiq through the corridors of North Block where she met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Ashiq, captain of Jammu and Kashmir’s all-woman football team which called on the minister, said she was pleasantly surprised to see how he wasted no time in redressing their grievances over the lack of sports-related infrastructure in the state.
“When we told the home minister that Jammu and Kashmir lacks sports infrastructure, he immediately called up the Chief Minister (Mehbooba Mufti) and requested her to do the needful to help us,” Ashiq, who is from Srinagar, said.
Ashiq, who defends the 24-foot-long and 8-foot-high goal post for her team, said the youth in Kashmir Valley was talented and all that they required was a platform.
“The minister also told us that Rs 100 crore had already been sanctioned (under the Prime Minister’s special package) for the state,” the captain of the CM’s-XI team told PTI.
She agree that her life and career had made a remarkable U-turn since the days when her picture was splashed in the national media as a stone pelter. The same hands that threw stones at the forces now ward off many a hard kick as she guards the goalpost.
“I don’t want to look back. My life has changed for ever. I want to be an achiever and do something to make the state and the nation proud,” said Ashiq, whose life story may soon be turned into a biopic now that a renowned Bollywood filmmaker is planning to make a film on her.
During the 30-minute meeting with Singh, the team members conveyed to him that if proper infrastructure — such as training facilities — came up in Jammu and Kashmir, the youth could be motivated to hone their talents and bring laurels to the state, staying away from terrorism and other unlawful activities.
Team manager Tsering Angmo said the sports infrastructure in the border areas was particularly poor and needed urgent attention so that young Kashmiris could be weaned away from illicit acts. “With proper infrastructure in place, the youth can take up sports to nourish their talents and no one can brainwash anyone. No one will join terrorism or indulge in stone pelting,” Angmo, who is from Ladakh, said.
Ashiq and Angmo thanked Singh for listening to them and for speaking to the chief minister about their problems. Later, the home minister tweeted, “Met the young and energetic girls of JK’s first ever Women Football Team. They are highly motivated and driven when it comes to football.”
He also said they were examples for others to follow. “Playing the role of new age ‘Gender Benders’, these girls are setting an example for others to follow. I wish them success and a great future,” he tweeted.
