The air is thick with tension as students from 23 schools across the city struggle to get their words right.

“How do you spell Gemini?” a judge asks Preethy of Madivala Government High School. She hesitates and asks for a Kannada translation, then proceeds to answer correctly, amid loud claps and cheers.

It was the sixth year that Sahasra Deepika International for Education (SDIE) was holding a spelling bee competition for Class 9 students of Kannada-medium government high schools across the city.

It is unique in many ways: the students do not come from top private schools and many cannot speak English beyond constructing basic sentences. As many as 92 students were drawn from 23 schools as part of a programme to impart English grammar and vocabulary skills among Kannada-medium students. They performed admirably, tackling words from ‘celebration’ and ‘vague’ to ‘heliocentric’ and ‘echinodermata’. The winning word was ‘chorus’.

“We want to give these children an opportunity to be on stage, and to gain confidence through such competitions,” says Vijayalakshmi Ramakrishnan, founder and treasurer of the SDIE. “Some of these kids have never celebrated a birthday. Some do not get English textbooks until the end of the school year.”

The goal is to try to ensure that these children do not feel left out, she says, pointing out that without a working knowledge of English, the children have little chance of getting jobs in the future.

The winners of the event are: Archana, Krishna Iyer School; Sandhya, Honnagonahatti Government High School; Bindu Shree, Honnagonahatti High School; Syed Arbaz, Fort High School, and Vishwanath Doddagolarahatti Government High School.

City boy P. Leela Sagar highlighted his potential as a sailor with a victory in the Optimist National Sailing Championships held in Bhopal recently. He is a product of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad (YCH), which was instituted six years ago.

Leela Sagar handled his boat with great skill to win six races out of 12 and displayed commendable maturity and confidence while doing so. He had bagged gold during the Monsoon Regatta in July 2014, and also had won a bro nze at the Coastal Nationals at Bombay in October 2014. After the triumph at Bhopal, he is now among the top ranked national sailors in his category. “The boy is a natural, is determined and learns by instinct. He has realised that there is no substitute for hard work and resilience. He will surely go places,” said Suheim Sheikh, his coach and mentor for the last three years.

Sagar well and truly proved himself by beating several sailors who had taken part in competitions all over the world. His rise to the top has come after three years of hard work, dedication and participation in several hard-fought championships. He first joined the sport at the YCH through Naandi Foundation about three years ago.

Despite being a quick learner, his light body proved to be a handicap and he finished at the bottom of the fleet on debut. But later, he made up for the lost ground, developed the skill and craft, and made rapid progress. Two more youngsters Musti Saibaba and P. Raju, who joined the YCH through the LSN Foundation, showed promise and finished 14th and 15th.

Thousands of mourners bid an emotional farewell to budding cricketer Mohammad Ayazuddin on Friday, after he succumbed to injuries sustained in a high-speed road accident involving a 1000 CC Suzuki mobike on Sunday last.

The budding 19-year-old cricketer and son of Congress MP and former Indian cricket skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, breathed his last around 11 a.m. on Friday. His health condition had been extremely critical as he sustained multiple factures and serious injuries on kidneys, lungs, and brain.

A team of specialists who treated him removed a kidney after they failed to control bleeding in it. On Thursday, they had detected a brain dysfunction after some tests and termed his condition gravely critical.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, MPs Asaduddin Owaisi and Anjan Kumar Yadav were among a host of leaders who called on the grieving Mr. Azharuddin. The body of Ayazuddin was taken to Mecca Masjid for prayers before the funeral attended by more than 10,000 people. There was a stampede-like situation when people were allowed to have a last glimpse of Ayazuddin. A metal grill on which people climbed collapsed injuring two people.

The crowds swelled by the minute and Mr. Owaisi had to walk in front of the van carrying the body to help police clear the mourners. The funeral took place in a graveyard at Saidabad.

Mr. Azharuddin could be seen fighting tears though he maintained his composure whenever someone expressed condolences. Ayazuddin was his younger son from his separated wife.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said he was shocked and grieved by the death of Ayazuddin and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Ahmadullah, Tourism Minister V. Vasant Kumar, and others too sent condolence messages.
