‘Machilipatnam Sarvasvam’, (Encyclopaedia of Bandar), written by Bandar-based modern historian and numismatist Mohammed Silar, is all set to be released by the end of June. The book focuses on the flourishing of Buddhism and Jainism in Krishna district as well as individuals and institutions which brought laurels to the port town.

In 2010, he wrote his first book ‘Tara Tarala Bandar Charitra’, which became a reference guide for history research scholars. It was reprinted in 2013. “My second book has a detailed narration about the rule of several dynasties in Masula – from Mughal, Dutch to British and French. The history of India’s third municipality, Machilipatnam Municipality, is also one of the key chapters of the encyclopaedia,” Mr. Silar said.

Based on Battiprolu inscription in Pulinda script, Mr. Silar is trying to establish the birth of Telugu language in Machilipatnam. As Machilipatnam played an important role in the evolution of education and literature in Andhra Pradesh, the book chronicles the lives of many luminaries including Madras University’s first elected Vice-Chancellor Raghupathi Venkataratnam Naidu of Machilipatnam.

Mr. Silar, a retired Special Grade Tahsildar and a Food Inspector during the cyclonic storm in 1977, has been engaged in documenting the glorious past of the town. “Bandar population was 64,000 in 1865 as against 9,000 of Vijayawada. The demography shows the glorious past and development of the tiny town in those days”, he says.

New Delhi:

Delhi’s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Saturday, directed Divisional Commissioner’s office to survey and assess damages to life and property caused by Friday’s dust storm in the national capital and provide ex-gratia or relief to the affected families.

Jung also instructed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) authorities to supply water in tankers in the affected areas immediately. “Despite prompt efforts by DJB, the Palla tube wells are still non-functional due to power failure in the area, affecting water supply in north-west Delhi. Further, there has been a major problem at Delhi-cantt pumping station, which affected water supply in south Delhi. There was also water supply problem in southwest Delhi, north and parts of New Delhi Municipal Council area, Saturday morning.

“Due to power failure, DJB could produce only 681 MGD of water, which is less by 154 MGD of their daily production,” said a press statement issued by LG office. DJB offices will remain open today and Sunday to ensure restoration of water supply in affected areas and the control room will function round the clock.

DJB is in constant touch with officers of Power department and discoms to ensure regular power supply to water treatment plants and booster pumping stations, said the DJB officials during a stock taking meeting chaired by Jung on Saturday, to review water and power situation in the national capital. Jung directed the Power Department that power supply in Palla region of North Delhi be restored today itself so that water supply is not affected further.

In the aftermath of the storm, there was major loss of supply from extra high voltage Northern region lines feeding power to Delhi and number of 400 kv, 220kv, 66kv, 33kv and 11kv high tension lines tripped. “At the time of thunderstorm Delhi was drawing around 5000 MW and load fell by around 4000 MW within one hour. The restoration of lines was taken on war footing and priority was accorded for restoring power to Delhi Metro, water treatment plants and NDMC area,” according to the statement. By midnight, majority of the load was restored and Delhi was drawing 3200 MW with around 200 MW load shedding.

On Saturday, the situation is normal in most of the areas but there may be rotational load shedding of 300 MW during peak hours. The major 220 kv links from Bamnoli to Pappan Kalan Grid, Bawana to Rohini Grid, Mandola-Gopalpur Grid have suffered breakdown with major damage of towers on each of these lines.

Measures like setting up of emergency restoration system (ERS) with the help of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) are being taken and power would be normalized by Sunday evening, said the statement.

Lt Governor also said that all efforts should be made so that there is restoration of power in affected areas by Sunday positively so that people do not suffer in the summer season.

With the crowd in splits at her witty remark, the 19-year-old claimed the title of Princess Secunderabad Club at the Secunderabad Club May Queen Ball 2014 on Saturday. Babita Yadav, was the winner of Queen Secunderabad Club.

Seema Mirza, a 19-year-old student, and Babita Yadav, 37-year-old educator, are poles apart, but found themselves on common ground onstage the annual beauty pageant in which 10 young ladies (Princesses) and nine older ladies (Queens) participated.

Seema, studying B.Com at St Mary’s College is joining Manipal University this August. Seema entered this pageant to fight her fear of public speaking and walking in heels! “I am a sports person,” says Seema, who also won the sub-title of Ms Beautiful Hair.

Arshad Ayub elected HCA president

Former Minister and incumbent president of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) G. Vinod has been eased out of the post and in his place, the vice-president and ex-Test cricketer Arshad Ayub has been elected as the president.

The HCA Executive Committee, which meet here on Wednesday morning, decided to ease out Mr. Vinod. This decision has to be ratified by the annual general meeting scheduled to be held on August 22. Mr. Vinod had earlier requested postponement of the meeting claiming he was busy with the Assembly byelections where he is contesting from Chennur in Adilabad district.

However, the HCA top brass felt that the meeting was long due and in the wake of the latest High Court order clearing all legal hurdles, it did not want to waste any more time. The other significant decision taken at the meeting was to hold the general body meeting where elections to various posts will also be held.

The EC also named senior IAS officer Jayesh Ranjan as the returning officer for the poll. “We have to go ahead with the meeting as the term of the office-bearers (except that of secretary) has effectively ended on May 31,” explained a senior official of HCA.

EC to go by guidelines

“We are aware Mr. Vinod is seeking a third extension of another two years as president, but a majority in the EC felt it was time we followed the guidelines,” he said.

However, there is no clarity yet on the secretary’s post as the incumbent M. V. Sridhar is yet to return from South Africa where his employers, Mahindra Satyam were associated as IT service providers to the just-concluded World Cup soccer.

FMSCI Chairman Vijay Mallya endorsed the decision and the FIA was informed about this, according to a FMSCI Media release here Saturday.

Mallya is the Titular Delegate of India and a member of the prestigious World Motor Sports Council of the FIA, which is responsible for all aspects of international motorsport at every level from karting to Formula One.

Ebrahim has replaced Vicky Chandhok in the role and will represent the FMSCI to lend a hand to Mallya in the FIA, the release added.

Ebrahim said: “While my predecessor worked hard to get F1 to India, my priority now would be to get more Indians into F1 and its likes. We are going to work hard to create opportunities for our sportspersons to step out and take on the world.

“We will make sincere efforts to align with global best practices and avail all possible assistance from international associates.

Motorsports: Two podiums for Armaan Ebrahim

India ‘s   Armaan Ebrahim finished on podium in both the races in the second round of the Blancpain FIA GT Series here Sunday, marking a successful return after having suffered a high speed crash in the opening round in Nogaro (France) last month.

Driving for Fortec Motorsports in the Silver Cup Class, the Chennai driver finished an identical third in both the outings, less than a month after suffering a dislocated collar bone and a cracked rib in the qualifying of the sprint race.

In Sunday’s second race, Armaan’s car was hit from the rear early on, forcing him to drop behind, but recovered solidly to finish third. A stewards hearing later could see Armaan move up to the second spot in his class in Race 2 in which he finished 13th overall.

As the original car was completely written off and the new car due to arrive in another two weeks, Armaan drove the teams second car along with a new teammate, Miguel Torel.

The two one-hour tests was spent mainly on getting to grips with Mercedes SLS AMG as due to the crash in Round 1, no pre race tests were possible.

The grid being one of the most competitive in GT Racing with as close to six F1 drivers and most others being Platinum and Gold category drivers representing Factory teams, the top 14 cars were all within a second in Qualifying.

“Two podiums in the Silver Cup is a dream start after a bad crash in the last round in France. It takes a bit of time to get back in the groove especially when you have to contend with acute pain in the collar bone and ribs which makes it very difficult to be aggressive with the steering wheel in the high speed corners.

“Also, as this is the first time I am driving the Mercedes SLS AMG, it does require quite a bit of pre-season testing, and unfortunately we have not been fortunate to have that,” said Armaan.
