Delhi’s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Saturday, directed Divisional Commissioner’s office to survey and assess damages to life and property caused by Friday’s dust storm in the national capital and provide ex-gratia or relief to the affected families.
Jung also instructed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) authorities to supply water in tankers in the affected areas immediately. “Despite prompt efforts by DJB, the Palla tube wells are still non-functional due to power failure in the area, affecting water supply in north-west Delhi. Further, there has been a major problem at Delhi-cantt pumping station, which affected water supply in south Delhi. There was also water supply problem in southwest Delhi, north and parts of New Delhi Municipal Council area, Saturday morning.
“Due to power failure, DJB could produce only 681 MGD of water, which is less by 154 MGD of their daily production,” said a press statement issued by LG office. DJB offices will remain open today and Sunday to ensure restoration of water supply in affected areas and the control room will function round the clock.
DJB is in constant touch with officers of Power department and discoms to ensure regular power supply to water treatment plants and booster pumping stations, said the DJB officials during a stock taking meeting chaired by Jung on Saturday, to review water and power situation in the national capital. Jung directed the Power Department that power supply in Palla region of North Delhi be restored today itself so that water supply is not affected further.
In the aftermath of the storm, there was major loss of supply from extra high voltage Northern region lines feeding power to Delhi and number of 400 kv, 220kv, 66kv, 33kv and 11kv high tension lines tripped. “At the time of thunderstorm Delhi was drawing around 5000 MW and load fell by around 4000 MW within one hour. The restoration of lines was taken on war footing and priority was accorded for restoring power to Delhi Metro, water treatment plants and NDMC area,” according to the statement. By midnight, majority of the load was restored and Delhi was drawing 3200 MW with around 200 MW load shedding.
On Saturday, the situation is normal in most of the areas but there may be rotational load shedding of 300 MW during peak hours. The major 220 kv links from Bamnoli to Pappan Kalan Grid, Bawana to Rohini Grid, Mandola-Gopalpur Grid have suffered breakdown with major damage of towers on each of these lines.
Measures like setting up of emergency restoration system (ERS) with the help of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) are being taken and power would be normalized by Sunday evening, said the statement.
Lt Governor also said that all efforts should be made so that there is restoration of power in affected areas by Sunday positively so that people do not suffer in the summer season.
