The heart of the natter

Chatterers both, these siblings are each other’s sounding boards, critics and best friends. The energy is infectious, we find

DanishKubraMPOs10dec2014

Relative Value with Danish (26) and Kubra Sait (31)

A riot. That’s what this brother-sister duo is. What was meant to be an hour-long interview steamrolls at full speed into nearly three, before plodding to a reluctant halt. They laugh a lot. They also tease, crack abundant jokes, high five each other repeatedly, make casual conversation with onlookers and fans, and are generally high on life. Exhaustingly so, especially to reticent people not given to much exuberance. Danish and sister Kubra, well known in Bangalore as anchors, emcees, TV hosts and him, the voice of prankster Nagaraj on the radio (or Chacko, Azhgar…take your pick), make no effort dispel the notion that they are talkers. Fun ones, at that.

Older sister Kubra will repeatedly deny that she is a bully — and Danish will say she used to be one — but it is apparent that she is very involved in her little brother’s life. Case in point — the T-shirt, shoes and socks she has carried with him to change into photographs for this interview, which Danish obligingly accedes to without a thought or a look at her choices. He trusts her implicitly, it’s clear. “This is my world — my mom and sister. We are each other’s best friends,” he says earnestly, and she nods.

They get along like a house on fire, and it’s almost impossible to catch them out of tune. Danish starts a sentence, Kubra completes it. Kubra teases a train of thought, Danish responds with perfectly-timed laughs. They put their synergy down to having grown up in a broken home, where their parents were constantly at odds. Through it all, Kubra, a self-proclaimed “warrior”, remained fiercely protective of her brother. “He was so cute! Not that he isn’t now,” she says, looking at him fondly. ‘Didi’ (older sister) as Danish endearingly calls her even as we are surrounded by starry-eyed autograph-hunters, is the proverbial older sibling — pampering, indulgent, and sometimes domineering.

She recalls growing up with an “adorable” kid, who ate up all his chocolates and asked her to share as per mom’s strict instructions. “He didn’t even have his own clothes!” she says with a giggle. “He was so fair that if you gave him a tiny slap on the cheek, he would start bawling and turn beetroot red,” she says, gesturing animatedly. “So my mum would put him in my red frilly frock, which had layers and layers going right down to the floor, and give him a small smack on the cheek, and then click a picture while he would cry.” That is all she can complete before collapsing into laughter while a mortified Danish yells into the microphone — “We were poor! POOR! Put that down as the reason please.”

Mother and daughter would “torture” the littlest member of the family, but also made him the centre of their universe. Kubra has drawn his biology diagrams for him, driven him to boarding school and even sat with his head on her lap as they bawled when it was time to leave him there. “Of course we miss each other — first when she went to Dubai and now that she is in Mumbai,” says Danish, restlessly swirling chopsticks in the air before Kubra promptly puts them away. “Some of my best childhood memories are of the family going to the movies — she and mom on one bike and me and dad on another — and all I’d want to do is sit with Didi because she was the cool one.” Kubra also dropped him to school — a ride on a black, kickstart TVS bike filled with chatter and games where they would follow the fastest person ahead of them on the road.

Danish too weighs in on his sister’s relationships, work choices, and even plays mediator when she fights with their mother, who he says, “runs their lives.” “And when we quarrel with mom, one will stand up for her saying ‘you can’t talk like that about her!’ before becoming one unit and telling mom to leave the other alone. But while I’ll listen and resolve things, this one will go add more fuel to the fire — bloody!” he says, gesturing at his sister who is convulsing in laughter before saying guiltily, “Yes he’s right, I do that!”

Danish’s sister is his first critic — pulling him up for everything from calling an old man a ‘rascal’ in humour during a prank call to critiquing his clothes — “Look at what he’s wearing!” She recalls how as a child, he fought with her and went to Lalbagh, dressed in a casual t-shirt and his school tie, “and then clicked photos with all the Mickey Mouse dustbins.” He’s also honest with her. In fact, a week before they co-anchored the Pro Kabaddi League for TV, Kubra says she was on edge, unconvinced that it would work. “He was sure — and look how well it did!” They go on to talk about how much they love Shah Rukh Khan, who they met during Temptations 2004 in Bangalore and then during the Pro Kabaddi league. Once again, it’s hard to pries them apart.

Kubra says it “melts her heart” when “no matter where we are or with who we are, he’ll turn around and say, ‘Didi, can we go? Didi, can we do this?’ He’s taller than me, super independent and so, good at what he does, but still accords me that respect and fondness.” On stage, therefore, the first time he referred to her as Kubra, it gave her a jolt. “I also find it very weird ya, to call her Kubra. So I just say ‘HEY’!” he says loudly, with his trademark energy. And just when it seems like it’s all sibling love, he pulls her leg. “After a point when we’re hosting, I’ll call her Didi and she’ll call me Dan. But this one toh goes into a trance! We were doing a show where we’re giving the 1,000 ranked person an award and she goes ‘you are the lonely lamp in this darkness…’. I’m thinking, God, stop it already!”

Being in the same profession, they say, was a happy accident. “He was doing really well in theatrics school, while I was in Dubai, working for Microsoft and also anchoring events for the company before realising I wanted to do it for myself. Somehow, we both found our way into this profession. We took separate paths, but landed up in the same place,” Kubra says.

Ever since, there has been no looking back. Today, the two try and work together when possible, and make it a point to solicit feedback from the other “and mom, of course” no matter where they are. Work is central to both their lives, especially Danish’s, who admits that he doesn’t have too many friends. “In the last two-three years, people have gotten to know me. But for old Bengalurians, I’m still Kubra’s brother. In fact, we sometimes whet events like that. If I introduce myself as Kubra’s brother and they don’t know who she is, I know what kind of work they’ll give me,” he says. She nods, adding, “And now Danish is doing so well that people recognise me through him. It’s a weird twisted heirloom.”

We’ve hurtled from early evening to night, and it is time to wrap up. They banter about how she went from being a tomboy who wore Danish’s WWE t-shirts to college to one “glam” chick because of the “double poverty” they were in, he says with a guffaw. Loud laughter, again. The hilarity, we realise, is just one of the many reasons these two are as tight as thieves.

30,000 Chennaiites break record with ‘human Tricolour’

At 4 a.m. on Sunday, Chennaiites started gathering at the YMCA grounds here; a few hours later, a Guinness World Record was broken. Over 30,000 people came together to create the world’s largest human formation of a national flag, surpassing Pakistan in this feat.

Nine months ago, a sports club in Lahore made the first attempt to create a human national flag of Pakistan with 28,957 people and held the record for the largest formation till Sunday.

Seyda Subasi-Gemici, adjudicator of Guinness World Records Ltd., said, “It is a big historical day for India. I was very touched when I saw people gather around 5 a.m. and wait till noon in this heat to be a part of this event. They have truly showed their unity today.”

India is prepared to create such huge records and they can recreate this at any point in time, she added.

She recollected how she visited Chennai last year for “Parle Golu Galatta 2011,” the largest doll collection.

Isak Nazar, Governor of Rotary Club International 3230 that organised the event, said, “This achievement that people of Chennai have made is special. We organised this event to instil patriotism among the people and let future generations know about the importance of national flag.”

Planning for the event started 10 months ago.

“We mobilised people from colleges and corporate firms over a period of time. We had a set of architects who planned this,” Mr. Nazar said.

Kin of Nizam soldiers get own homes in Hyderabad

Hyderabad :

After a decade-long fight with the government, families of former soldiers in the erstwhile Nizam army are set to realize their dream, owning quarters in which they had been staying for decades. In fact, 120 occupants have received title deeds last week.

The Hyderabad district administration had set the process of regularization (transfer of rights of government land) of Nizam’s ex-servicemen quarters (nearly 700) located at five prime areas — Banjara Darwaja (Old stables, Golconda Fort), Band Lines (Fateh Maidan, Nampally), Mohammadi Lines (2nd Lancer, Shaikpet), Masab Lines (Asifnagar) and Saifabad Lines (AC Guards, Asifnagar) — in the city in 2008. Before the Hyderabad state was merged with the Indian Union, the then administration had allotted these quarters to soldiers in the Nizam army.

The Hyderabad district administration had served notices to the occupants to submit the documentary evidence. Responding to the notices, 527 applications were received from 497 occupants. The authorities then verified the applications based on rental slips, voter ID cards and other documents submitted by the occupants and approved 486 applications for regularization.

“We have taken into consideration various issues, including the GO Ms No 166 dated 16/02/2008, which stated that white ration cards holders have to pay 0.25 paise per square yard and pink card holders Re one per sq yard, market value fixed on 31/12/2003, depreciation at three per cent (20 years between 1983-2002), 60% rent for 1983, 25% surcharge for prime land and an advance of Rs 20,000, which we have already collected. Calculating all these, we have prepared the memos to get the final amount to be paid by the occupant/applicant,” sources in the Hyderabad collectorate said.

The occupant is required to pay anywhere between Rs 60,000 and Rs 10 lakh depending on the area of the quarter. “The market value has been fixed depending on the locality. Once, he or she pays the amount, the title deed will be released through member convenor, district-level regularization panel, Hyderabad district. The applicants, who have received the memo, have to pay the final amount in four installments and remit it in SBH, Gunfoundry branch,” he said. “So far, we have issued title deeds to 120 occupants. In case, the occupants fail to pay within four months, they will be referred to the CCLA,” the official added.

However, the occupants, who have to pay below Rs 2 lakhs were coming forward to remit the money and take the title deeds, but those who have to pay between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 10 lakh were not responding quickly,” the official.

A few occupants, who received their title deeds, stated that their dream of owning a house in Hyderabad has finally come true.

Inspector’s sexual harassment allegation rocks police force

A woman sub-inspector slapped with false case, suspension and an inquiry; knocks on doors of every authority in State seeking justice

Arjuman Banu, at the Bangalore Mirror office
Arjuman Banu, at the Bangalore Mirror office

Arjuman Banu, daughter of an illiterate mother and a lab technician father, joined police services as a sub-inspector in 1999. Coming from an orthodox Muslim family, it was a big achievement for her. She steadily grew in the ranks to become an inspector, never imagining she would be victimised for spurning the sexual advances of bosses. However, things began unravelling, and she faced suspension, a false case and a departmental inquiry.

The spunky woman isn’t giving up, though. With the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal giving her a reprieve by staying her suspension, Banu has decided to take on her bosses. She first sought intervention from the SP of Davanagere, seeking a sexual harassment case registered against the IGP and Deputy Superintendent of Police. When no action came from the SP, she sent a detailed account of her plight to authorities like Karnataka Lokayukta, State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), state police chief, Karnataka Minority Commission and Karnataka State Commission for Women. She wants an FIR to be registered against IGP (Eastern Range) Dr S Parashiva Murthy and DySP Thimmappa. She has given a complaint to SP, Davanagere, but no FIR has been registered yet.

“My wife is good looking. That is her biggest curse. Her seniors tried to sexually abuse her on several occasions. Coming from a Muslim family and being the mother of an 18-year-old, she gulped the humiliation and spurned their advances. It has reached an extreme. Now she has decided to fight and I’m going to support her,” her husband Ilyas Khan told Bangalore Mirror, demanding to know why the police top brass were not acting on her complaint.

The petition that started it all
The police received a petition dated June 2, 2014 alleging Arjuman and Ilyas had fraudulently obtained an income certificate, dated 04-07-2012, issued to those having income below Rs 17, 000 per month. The petitioner, Veeresh (later found to be non-existent), had charged the couple with obtaining the document from the Bhadravati tahsildar to get their daughter admitted to a medical or engineering college. The complainant accused the couple of cheating the government by obtaining the income certificate against the rules which state none of the parents should be Class I or Class II category government servants.

The complainant had attached documents (submitted to procure an income certificate) with details about Ilyas Khan, Arjuman’s mobile number and their daughter’s PUC marks, which the couple claims were all false.

Based on the complaint, the additional superintendent of police (Davanagere) sought a report from the tahsildar. On June 21, the tahsildar sought time to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.
However, before the tahsildar submitted his report, Arjuman alleges then additional SP Ravi Narayan acted post-haste, without examining the facts of the case, and prepared a report on June 26 recommending disciplinary action against her. His successor, Thimmappa, a DySP and in- charge additional SP, followed suit. He too sent a report to SP, Davanagere, on July 31, recommending action.

Meanwhile, the Bhadavati tahsildar submitted his report on August 5, concluding that the document in question – the income certificate based on which action was recommended by the SP – was not issued from his office. The tahsildar recommended closure of the case. However, just when the couple heaved a sigh of relief, came another shocker.

On August 6, the Davanagere SP, based on the additional SP’s report (which had not considered the tahsildar’s report), recommended action against Arjuman. Curiously, the IGP (eastern range) passed an order on October 16 suspending Arjuman.

Two reports were ignored
Arjuman has contended that her seniors blatantly omitted two reports — first by the tahsildar on August 5 and, another one, on August 20 by a deputy superintendent of police who had concluded that the petition against her was frivolous.

The DySP had found that the petitioner never existed. Further, it was found that Arjuman’s daughter had been admitted under General Merit quota and the question of income certificate (for a concessional fee seat) never arose. The DySP also concluded that the said certificate was not used anywhere and Arjuman had obtained an income certificate in June 2014 based on which the admission to engineering course was done in July 2014. This was a caste-cum-income certificate showing actual parental income of Rs 4.29 lakh per annum not the allegedly deflated one to take benefit under Backward Community Quota or fee concession.

However, none of this was examined while proceeding against her. She was suspended in October. Subsequently, she moved KAT (Karnataka Administrative Tribunal) and challenged the order. On November 5, KAT stayed the suspension for two months. However, when she went to her bosses with the order, she was in for another jolt. On November 6, a case was registered against her on the same grounds. It was result of her brass’ handiwork she has alleged in her complaint.

According to a revenue department official, when a person is caught using a fake income certificate, the tahsildar of the jurisdiction has to lodge a complaint. It is against the norm for police to take up a suo moto complaint.

Arjuman has stated in her complaint this was done out of sheer vendetta. “To wreak vengeance the IGP, eastern range, Davangere directed DSP, Bhadravati, to register a case against me under Karnataka SC/ST and Backward Classes Reservation Act by forwarding the copy of a false, baseless and frivolous report of I/C additional SP dated July 31 by putting ante-date to the memo of 18.10.2014, which was reported to have been received by DySp Bhadravati on 21.10.2014 with case following on 6.11.2014.

Though the tahsildar reported that no case could be made out, the IGP with mala fide intention and ill-motivated interest got a case registered against me after receipt of stay orders of the hon’ble KAT, Bangalore.”

What lies beneath
The inspector has alleged the reason behind this elaborate plot was because she had refused to yield to them. “He (Thimmappa) immediately rushed toward me and caught hold of my hands to outrage my modesty and threatened with dire consequences if I disclosed it,” she has stated in her complaint.

“Since I have not yielded to his misdeed, Thimmappa, deputy superintendent of police, Davangere city, has been carrying false tales to the IGP to spoil my career.” She adds further, “He engineered a plot against me and sent a false and frivolous report to the SP.” What made things worse, she says, is being twice wronged. “When I called on the IGP on 1.8.2014 to hand over my letter on the false allegations against me, he threatened, abused and subsequently came toward and caught hold of me. I screamed. Later, he threatened me too,” she has stated in her complaint.

What the top bosses say
IGP, Eastern Range, Dr S Parashiva Murthy denied the charges of sexual harassment. He said the action was taken based on the documentary evidence provided by the DSP and additional SP. He also maintained that the facts of the case would come out in a departmental inquiry.

“The action was solely based on reports from DSP, additional SP and SP. A departmental inquiry has been initiated to find the truth. If the inquiry finds nothing against her, nothing will happen to her. If she is found erring she will face action as per the law. The charges of sexual harassment are rubbish and must be a reaction to the departmental inquiry or suspension.” Murthy insisted it was not motivated by vengeance either. “If that was the case, I would have acted against her after getting the report. But instead I order a DE for a fair probe. I again reiterate that the sexual harassment charges are false,” Murthy told Bangalore Mirror.

Thimmappa denied charges of sexual harassment too. “I haven’t done anything like that. I don’t know anything about it,” Thimmappa told Bangalore Mirror.

“The matter has come to my notice. I will look into it,” Lalrokhuma Pachau, DG and IGP, told Bangalore Mirror.

ASI forms taskforce for restoring 3 Mughal-era structures

Agra:

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has formed a task force under the organization’s additional director general (ADG) BR Mani for the restoration and protection of three Mughal era-structures – Hanthi Khana, Aga Khan haveli and Khan-e-durran haveli situated on the Yamuna bank in vicinity of the Taj Mahal.

Mani along with senior ASI officials (Agra circle) conducted a survey of the structures on Saturday to ascertain their present condition. They found that all the three structure are in dilapidated condition and encroached upon by locals.

“We will ensure that these monuments are conserved and remain protected from encroacher. A survey has been done,” Mani said.

ASI officials said the selected monuments have found mention in a book written by Ebba Koch, Austrian architectural historian, as riverfront Mughal gardens in Agra. They are located on north eastern side of the monument, said an official.

According to information, Khan-e-durran was Shah Jahan’s governor of the Deccan and played a major role in annexation of Daulatabad fort in 1633. His haveli was later converted into a tannery during British period. At present, its ownership is in dispute. The ASI task fort has also been looking into this matter.

Likewise, Aga khan was the superintendent (also a fuajdar) under Shah Jahan and responsible for maintaining law and order at the river front. “He was also responsible for ensuring proper care of a thousand horses of the Mughal army. He died in 1658,” said an official.

The Hanthi gate was the entry point to the elephant enclosure. Although not much information is available about it, it does find mention in Koch’s book and also in Padshahnama written by Abdul Hamid Lahori in the 17th century.

The ASI will also chalk out a plan to plant trees in the Taj heritage corridor located between the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort and convert it into a greenbelt. The Supreme Court had passed an order this regard in 2006, but nothing much was done so far because of lack of funds and experts. Now, the project has taken wings once again after former minister of culture, Shripad Naik directed the ASI in August to revive the project.

Calcutta captures King – Superstar dances and dimples his way into 10,000 hearts

Shahrukh01KOLKATA31oct2014

Shah Rukh Khan rocked St. Xavier’s College on Wednesday evening with his dimpled smile, star appeal and snappy quips, giving a 10,000-strong crowd of screaming fans plentiful “happy” moments to remember the evening by.

If a kiss each on the forehead was a fairy tale come true for three second-year students, SRK’s spontaneity ensured that everyone else had something to take away from the hour-long Happy New Year show “Indiawaale Kolkata Mein Chha Gaye!” — presented by t2 in association with CenturyPly and Gameplan, powered by Glamour World Ayurvedic and partnered by the St. Xavier’s College Alumni Association and 91.9 Friends FM.

Chants of “We want Shah Rukh” had rent the air from 5.30pm with half the crowd already on the playground by then, armed with posters professing their love for King Khan and wishing HNY “good luck”. By the time SRK, Farah Khan and the rest of the Indiawaale team arrived from The Oberoi Grand, the crowd had doubled.

First on the stage was director Farah, who promised the audience King Khan in exchange for another promise. “Promise me, all 10,000 of you will go and watch Happy New Yearagain tomorrow, then I’ll ask Shah Rukh to come on stage,” she said.

For SRK, this crowd would have promised her the moon.

Shahrukh02KOLKATA31oct2014

Shah Rukh jogged onto the stage clad in ripped denims, black tee, tan leather jacket and his trademark dimpled smile. Delirium.

“There is no place like Calcutta for the love that I get and this is even beyond that. So, thank you very much. I am going to be here. I will talk for you, I will dance for you. I will do everything that you guys say,” promised Shah Rukh.

He proceeded to do just that and more.

The crowd would roar in approval whenever Shah Rukh said something, the screaming continuing when his HNY co-stars Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah or director Farah endorsed the Bolly Badshah’s love for his adopted hometown. “Shah Rukh told me that when you come to Calcutta with him, you witness love like you have never before, and I am witnessing it right now,” Farah said.

“I genuinely feel like a king of the world because of everyone in Calcutta. I was born in Delhi and brought up in Mumbai, but I can tell you, absolutely, unquantifiably, the love that I get in Calcutta I get nowhere else. As long as I am working I want to come back and do something special for Calcutta so please pray for me that I can do so,” Shah Rukh added.

He went on to repeat a dialogue from Happy New Year that he said was closest to his heart and one which students could learn from — “Duniya mein do tarah ke log hote hain, winners and losers, lekin zindagi har loser ko woh ek mowka zaroor deti hai jismein wohwinner ban sakte hain.”

While Shah Rukh the non-stop entertainer didn’t come as a surprise, at Xavier’s on Wednesday it was his turn to be entertained by his fans. Ten Xaverians got the opportunity to perform not just for, but with King Khan, Sonu, Vivaan and Farah.

While Moubani Roy Choudhury tried a dialogue from HNY, to which Shah Rukh responded with a “You are breathtaking”, fellow Xaverian Virender Singh sang Indiawaale. But it was when four students chosen to dance with the star took the stage that the fun went up a notch.

“I am switching to the Xavier’s team. I am in Calcutta, I have to be with my city. You guys (Farah, Vivaan and Sonu) can represent HNY,” SRK said, slipping between the Xaverians.

After the group had danced to various songs from HNY, Shah Rukh announced that it was time to groove to something different. “Can we have Lungi dance, please?” he hollered.

The audience went wild, as did everyone on stage.

When Class VI student of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School Divyansh Agarwal was reported missing in the crowd crush, SRK did his bit in locating him. “Divyansh, your parents are a little worried. Can you come in front of the stage? You can use this as an excuse to come up and see us from up close as well,” Shah Rukh said, prompting the ladies in the audience to call out that they were all “lost”.

SRK immediately flashed a dimpled smile and flipped a thumbs up sign.

While Shah Rukh hugged, danced, sang along and blew kisses at the audience every few minutes, what he didn’t do despite several requests was take off his black tee and show his eight-pack abs.

The audience did get a glimpse of hunk Sonu’s pectorals though, thanks to director Farah’s bullying.

The HNY team was felicitated by Father Felix Raj, principal of St. Xavier’s College, and also cut a cake to celebrate the success of the film.

Each member of the HNY team got a Xaverian T-shirt and a cap.

The best gift, of course, was reserved for the audience: SRK up close and personal.

Village commemorates 41 Wagon Tragedy victims on anniversary day

Malappuram :

On the occasion of observing 93rd anniversary of Wagon Tragedy, the darkest chapter of Malabar rebellion during British period on Thursday, a village near Tirur commemorates 40 people hailing from the village, who were killed in the tragedy.

A total of 70 among the 90 odd Mappila rebels who were taken in an air-tight goods wagon from Tirur to Podanur were killed on November 20, 1921. The prisoners were taken into custody when the rebellion was in peak and almost 80 detained rebels were despatched in freight wagon from Tirur to Podanur in Tamilnadu. During the journey about 60 of the rebels suffocated to death in wagon.

It is believed that among the 41 persons from Kuruvambalam who were victims of the tragedy, majority were bachelors who left behind no progeny. “Even the historians and local people were not much aware of the role of the Kruvambalam people in the incident till couple of years ago. According to the elders in the village the youngsters here had played a major role in the struggle against the British during the rebellion and more studies have to be conducted to shed light on the contribution of tragedy victims”, said Salim Kuruvambalam, Malappuram district panachayat member, who took initiative for setting up a memorial for the Wagon Tragedy victims at Kuruvamabalam. The district panchayat president Zuhara Mampad will inaugurate the comemmoration programmes in the village. Historians will also attend the programme.

Talking about role of Kuruvambalam persons in the tragedy, the historian KKN Kurupp said that government should conduct a comprehensive study on the victims of Wagon tragedy and other related incidents of Malabar rebellion. ” As there was no such study held so far the state government should initiate action to start a detailed historical and cultural study on the various incidents during the rebellion period. We are going to observe 100th anniversaty of the rebellion in 2021. But still we have no clear data or official document regarding the incidents and the details of the persons who were killed in Wagon tragedy”, he pointed out.

The historian and scholar M Gangadharan has recently opined that the Wagon tragedy was not a cruellest act of the British oppression during the Malabar rebellion, as about 200 Mappila youngsters pulled out of their house and they were killed infront of their family in October of the same year.
