Ahmedabad :

As the results for class X board exams for students of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) were announced on Monday, for many students from underprivileged backgrounds, the journey wasn’t a cake walk and yet they managed to excel in their exams.

One such case was that of 16-year-old Aafreen Shaikh, the daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver, who scored 99.31 percentile in her class X exams.

A student of FD High School, Aafreen plans to pursue medicine, as she aspires to become a doctor. “I am indeed delighted with the results I’ve got and plan to take up admission in the science stream. I wish to become a doctor as nobody in my family has pursued this career and I am always inspired by the way doctors help the people heal their wounds,” said Aafreen who studies at FD High School in Juhapura area of Ahmedabad. She scored 87.13 % in her board exams.

For Shaikh Mohammad Hamza, Aafreen’s father, meeting the expenses of his daughter’s education is a struggle due to limited earnings. “I nurture a family of four and will do all that I can to educate my daughter and fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor. We’ve never differentiated between a girl or a male child and I will be the most proud if my daughters study and become independent. I am trying to arrange for financial assistance so that Aafreen can pursue a career of her choice,” said Hamza.

60 mushroom species documented at Yenepoya campus

Mangalore , KARNATAKA :

MushroomsYenepoyaMPOs29may2018

Mangaluru :

In an unique initiative, Yenepoya (deemed to be university), has undertaken a comprehensive study of the mushrooms present on the Derlakatte campus.
The study, which was conducted over a period of six months, has yielded rich information on the macrofungal resources of the campus. About 60 species of mushrooms have been observed on the campus, out of which about 40 have been described in the book. Out of the 40 species published, 12 species are edible, 12 species are medicinal, two species ectomycorrhizal and one species is parasitic. Two species which are rare and known to be poisonous are also recorded.

The information was documented in a ready reference book titled ,‘Macrofungal resources of Yenepoya University’.  Yenepoya chancellor Abdullah Kunhi released the book at a ceremony held on the campus on Tuesday, in the presence of vice-chancellor M Vijayakumar and registrar G Shreekumar Menon. The book is dedicated to M Abdul Rahiman, former vice-chancellor, Kannur and Calicut Universities.

Yenepoya is the first educational institution in the region to initiate such a study of mushrooms on the campus. Though mushrooms play a unique role in the ecosystem, importance is always given to only flora and fauna, said sources. Yenepoya has initiated other similar studies to document the flora and fauna of the campus too.

The study of macrofungal life on the campus was undertaken by a research team led by K R Sridhar, Dr N C Karun and Dr Bhagya B Sharma from June-November 2016.

Yenepoya has striven to make its 32 acre campus into an eco-friendly zone. The institution has undertaken various measures for greening the campus with different landscapes like lawns, arboretum, bamboo thickets, medicinal plant garden, areca plantation and acacia grove. The campus includes a large rainwater harvesting pond, roof water harvesting facilities, waste water treatment and recycling plant, vermicompost unit and solar power generation facility. The university carries out a regular environmental audit of the campus and has an eco club for students. It is hoped that these activities will inculcate a love for nature among the students who study here, and inspire them to act as brand ambassadors for nature conservation in their future life.

Aligarh:

Free heart surgeries will be available for children with congenital defects at the Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) after the varsity signed a deal with a British charity.

The collaboration with the Healing Little Hearts (HLH) charity was initiated by AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor, Tabassum Shahab (Pro Vice-Chancellor) and Shamshul Zoha, an AMU alumnus.

Javaid Akhter (Registrar), Mohammad Hanif Beg (Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) and Azam Haseem signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HLH’s Sanjiv Nichani (Consultant Paediatric Interventionist) and Zoha.

“Since independent researches show yearly births of over 100,000 babies with congenital heart defects in India, it is high time to take necessary steps for helping these children with heart ailments,” said professor Beg.

Many children requiring corrective heart surgeries do not get treated due to financial constraints and even the affordable treatment available is sub-standard with poor expertise.

JNMC provides affordable treatment with state-of-art facilities to patients from underprivileged sections, he added.

‘Urdu’s Space In Kalina Not Byculla’

Mumbai, MAHARASHTRA :

In 2014, the Congress-led government had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the construction of an Urdu Bhavan at Mumbai University’s Kalina campus to promote the language

The state govt’s proposal to set up a centre for the language outside of the university, where it even has an allocated space, has language lovers crying foul

In 2014, the Congress-led government had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the construction of an Urdu Bhavan at Mumbai University’s Kalina campus to promote the language. Land was allocated and bhoomi poojan was performed. However, the project never saw the light of day.

Cut to present: The state government has proposed building the Urdu Bhavan in Byculla,. “The bhavan will come up on a 10,000 sqft area near the Agripada police station. And, if we get a larger FSI, we will be able to construct a four-storeyed structure with state-of-the-art facilities. We have asked the Centre to provide us with R50 crore for this,” says advocate Waris Pathan, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislator from Byculla, who has been at the forefront of getting approvals for this project. As per the proposal, the bhavan will have a library, convention centre, a girls’ hostel and will offer a range of new courses. “The Urdu readership in Byculla is high so it will see a lot of traction,” says Pathan

‘It’s not a Muslim language’
Yet, the news of the bhavan coming up at Byculla has lovers of the language divided. Members of Jai Ho Foundation, a charity organisation in Kurla, have written a letter to the Union Minority Affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, CM Devendra Fadnavis, Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, education minister Vinod Tawde and MU VC Suhas Pednekar, requesting them to reconsider the location. “We want the centre to be built inside the varsity because that will make it more accessible to students. By constructing it in a Byculla bylane, they are propagating the misguided notion that it’s a Muslim language,” says Jai Ho’s president Afroz Malik. Presently, the MU has a bhasha (language) bhavan dedicated to Marathi and Sanskrit.

There have been talks about building a Hindi bhasha bhavan as well. Malik says Kalina is a strategic location which makes it convenient for people commuting from both the suburbs as well as from South Mumbai. Moreover, setting it up in a healthy academic atmosphere will only help promote the language, he adds. “MU has people enrolling from all walks of life. It also has students from overseas. Urdu will get more exposure,” he states.

A matter of space
Meanwhile, the land allocated to the Urdu Bhavan at Kalina remains vacant. This is in stark contrast to the buzzing Urdu department, which has seen a sharp growth in the number of students as well as non-teaching staff. “The increasing curiosity around the language has translated into more people signing up for courses. The MA course sees more enrolments,” Dr Sahab Ali, head of Urdu department, says. Presently, the department has an overall strength of 200 students. While Dr Ali is happy to learn of a bhavan coming up in Byculla, he says it’s not enough. “I would want the centre to be built here because we are running out of space to accommodate students,” he says. The Urdu department at MU was established in 1982.

In 2013, Dr Ali had written to the Department of Minorities Affairs requesting the need for a bhasha bhavan to cater to the growing needs of the language. The request received the green light in 2014. The change in ruling parties resulted in the project languishing for years.

Farid Khan, convenor of Urdu Caravan, an NGO that promotes Urdu language and culture, says he sees merit in NGO Jai Ho’s stand. “I believe a language will thrive in an academic setting.”

Ex-Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithvi Raj Chavan visiting the couple’s home and facilitating them.

It is no secret that even today, many Muslim girls do not get an opportunity to pursue their dreams due to family responsibilities and unfavourable conditions. And this situation rarely changes after marriage, with many career-oriented women hardly getting an opportunity to build their careers due to the household responsibilities.

Which is why the story of Irfan and Anjum, a couple from Karad, a city in Satara district of Maharashtra, is so encouraging. The two studied for and cracked the CA (Chartered Accountant) examination after getting married and emerged as the first Muslim CA couple of Maharashtra.

Irfan Shabbir Bagban tied the knot with Anjum in 2011 when he was doing his Bachelor ofEngineering (mechanical ). Anjum was also a commerce graduate and a career-oriented woman. She wanted to appear for the CA examinations and her husband extended his full cooperation and started giving her company to make his wife’s dream a reality. During Anjum’s preparations, Irfan also developed an interest in Accountancy and decided to make a career in this field.

They shifted to Pune for articleship at the SNJ & Company. After three years of continuous effort, Irfan managed to crack the CA exam in May 2017 and Anjum cleared it in November 2017.

Speaking with TwoCircles.net, Anjum said, “My in-laws supported me a lot. I know well that after marriage life changes suddenly but women should never give up and keep trying to achieve their goal.”

“We belong to the Bagban community which is popularly known for doing business. My father wanted me to become a CA because there was no Muslim CA in the entire Satara District. Alhamdulillah after hard work and with the help of family members, we achieved this feat,” said Irfan.

Confirming the claim of first post-marriage CA couple of India, Irfan said, “Sarvesh Joshi, our central council member, congratulated us by saying this has happened for the first time in the 63 years history of the institute.”

The couple is currently settled in Pune. Irfan is doing independent practice and Anjum is working as an Audit and Account Assistant in the Head office of Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, Pune.

Nadeem Sheikh, an activist of the Bagban Biradari education movement, congratulated the couple for their achievement. “I must appreciate Irfan for motivating his wife to appear for such an important exam. Anjum has also done a fantastic job and set up an inspiring example for all married women.”

PLAINFIELD, IL :

Plainfield South High School sophomore Amaan Khan won second place in the National Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) held in Maryland May 2 to May 5, 2018, for creating a self-driving model car.

He advanced to the national competition after winning first place at the regional JSHS competition in March.

Khan’s model car can drive within designated lanes, stop and go at traffic lights, and avoid obstacles.

His second-place finish earned him an $8,000 scholarship in addition to the $2,000 scholarship for winning the regional event. The regional competition is open to ninth through twelfth grade students.

Most of the 97 national competitors were high school juniors and seniors. “Second in national is still really great,” Khan said.

Students compete in several categories including computer science and math, bioengineering, behavioral science, medicine, health, physics, engineering and environmental science.

Khan wants to enter the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair next year, he said.

Plainfield :

A Plainfield South High School sophomore is traveling to a national science competition, after he created and programmed a self-driving car.

Amaan Khan, 15, will compete this week in the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Maryland, after winning the Illinois Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) in March, according to a news release from Plainfield District 202.

Khan created and programmed a self-driving car that can drive within designated lanes, stop and go at lights and avoid obstacles.

He won a $2,000 college scholarship and free trip to the national competition. He is one of two students from Illinois heading to Maryland to compete Tuesday through Saturday with 93 students from across the nation.

Competitors must submit a research paper and present their projects before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

Khan became interested in robotics and artificial intelligence last year, after he built a voice-controlled toy car. He took online college courses and watched college lecture courses and YouTube videos to teach himself computer programming.

“As I was learning I kept building the project,” Khan said. “I’d learn one thing, implement it, learn another thing and implement that.”

Patrick and Samantha Scanlan, PSHS science teachers, have supported Khan along the journey.

Samantha Scanlan helped Khan register for the contest. Patrick Scanlan helped Khan polish his oral presentation.

“[Khan] knows what he wants and seeks out the resources to do it,” Patrick Scanlan said. “And if there’s something he needs to learn, he’s able to figure out what he needs to be successful.”

The JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students in science, technology, engineering or math.

MD Student Danish Imtiaz Receives Marilyn Koering Award

NEW DELHI / TAMIL NADU / TELANGANA  / Minnesota – Washington DC, U.S.A. :

DanishImtiazMPOs20may2018

For many in the lecture hall during the 9th Annual Marilyn Koering Award ceremony, devoted teacher, research scientist, mentor, and patient advocate Marilyn Koering, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), was an inspiration.

“She had a tremendous impact on my life,” said Koering’s sister, Susan, who travels from Minneapolis Minnesota each year to present the award. “Going to the same college, going into the medical world … she was an inspiration to me.”

The award is presented each year by Koering’s sister to the first-year medical student with the highest overall grade in the anatomical sciences. This year, Danish Imtiaz earned that distinction.

“I feel extremely honored to receive this award in the name of the esteemed Dr. Koering,” Imtiaz said, adding that her legacy will inspire him to continue exploring the anatomical sciences.

“I would like to thank Dr. Koering’s family for the award,” he said. “And also, I would like to thank the anatomy and histology professors at GW SMHS for their excellent instruction. I hope to continue to work hard and learn more about the anatomical sciences from them.”

Kenna Peusner, PhD, professor of anatomy and regenerative biology at SMHS, organized the award and introduced the speakers at the assembly. Peusner said that Marilyn Koering was dedicated to her students, teaching histology to more than 5,000 GW medical and graduate students. For 34 years, Koering taught in the classroom and labs at the SMHS until her retirement in 2003. She passed away in 2008 after a fierce battle against malignant melanoma.

“After Marilyn was diagnosed with melanoma, she fought the cancer for 21 years through essays, appearances on television, addressing cancer support groups, and writing letters to pharmaceutical companies and the federal government to gain support for patients who volunteered for experimental treatments,” Peusner recalled.

Mary Ann Stepp, PhD, professor of anatomy and regenerative biology at SMHS, who knew Koering both as a member of the faculty and as a student, spoke on her remembrances.

“When I came here and entered the Anatomy Department, the Chairman … saw my weaknesses in the anatomical sciences, so I was assigned to learn histology with the first-year medical students,” Stepp explained. “So I sat in the classroom with the medical students, and got to know Marilyn not only as a faculty member, but as a mentor. She was an excellent teacher; she really cared about making sure that the students understood what they were doing and how to do it well.”

During the ceremony, Susan Koering told a story of her 6-year-old grandniece, whom she said Marilyn would have loved. One day, she asked the young girl what she wants to be when she grows up. Her response: “A mommy.”

“I said, ‘Well, OK, but how about a scientist?’ And then about a month later I asked again ‘What are you going to be when you grow up?’ This time she said ‘a scientist,’” Koering said to laughter.
