Nine-year-old artist Alayna Zaid, having her maiden show in the city, shows promise
“Imaginarium” is a showcase of art works by a nine-year-old girl. What makes it even more interesting is the variety of medium, the budding artist Alayna Zaid has worked with like glass paint, watercolour, acrylic on canvas, oil on canvas, glue with paint, shaving foam with paint, tissue paper for crating textures. As for the imagery, the fourth standard girl of the Inventure Academy, has borrowed from flora and fauna. A few abstract works are also part of the collection.
At an age when children discover new games everyday, Alayna spent her holidays at home to complete 40 paintings for the exhibition. While Alayna’s mother Uzma Irfan says her work were so good that they decided to put it out in the public domain, the young artist is nonchalant about the development. “I don’t know how it feels. All I know is I like to paint different themes like nature and animals in different textures,” says Alayna.
Alayna was three when her mother noticed her talent. “The same year I put her in informal ‘observe and learn classes’ with Nimmi Ravindran as she was too young. But gradually she started taking to it and she has actively been learning and experimenting with her teacher’s guidance since then,” says Uzma.
Alayna’s passion for colours can be seen in her ‘Psychedelic’ painting in which she has used glue and paint. To depict ‘Snowy Mountains’ on a sunny day she uses shaving foam whereas her ‘Twilight’ has colours literally flowing down the canvas as she had discovered the diluting paint. Allowing it to flow resulted in creating the effect. “I love the textures that come out of paint-knife and chopsticks too”, she says pointing out to her trees and leaves.
Alayna has made 300 paintings till now but what the little girl is particularly excited about is ‘Mandala’ art work. Recently finished in school, she used rice and a variety of seeds for which she received appreciation from her teachers.
Alayna Zaid’s works will be on display at Sublime Galleria till August 2

Hyderabad :
Concerned over the plight of farmers, whose fortunes depend on the vagaries of weather, four engineers have shouldered the task of developing an app to help them out.
S Saquibuddin, Shaik Mukheet, Neha Bandari and Asma Fatima, working at the T-hub in Hyderabad are in the process of developing ‘Niyantran’, an app to provide crop related information to the farmers and help them seek help of experts for better yield.
“Initially we wanted to create an identity for ourselves and decided to take the startup route instead of a waiting for a job. As agriculture is the most neglected sector in spite of being the most important one, we decided to concentrate on this area. As we came to know about the plight of farmers, who land in debt-trap due to vagaries of weather, we decided to develop an app for the farming community,” said S Saquibuddin, CEO and co-founder of the startup christened ‘Toe-Up’.
Saquibuddin, Mukheet and Neha have graduated from Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Dundigal and being aeronautical engineers they have experimented the use of drones to monitor crops. But as it proved unviable due to practical difficulties and cost factor, they have decided to come up with a more convenient and easy tool for farmers.
“After downloading the ‘Niyantran’ app, farmers can seek expert opinion regarding the problems they face in farming. They can click the picture of the plant or crop affected by pest or other problems and send it to the experts. He will immediately receive guidance from experts regarding pest control. They can even record their voice and send it like in WhatsApp for information and guidance,” explained Neha.
The quartet has been working on the app for the past eight months and it will be ready for launch in a month.
While these youngsters are not keen about financial returns through this app, they are ambitious about building a profile to catch the attention of venture capitalists and investors. The start up received a shot in the arm as NASA selected it to conduct its space app challenge in Hyderabad.
“Besides being selected for T-Hub we are also part of Collab House, co-working space launched by Mozilla in Hyderabad. This has given us good mentors and exposure. Our focus is on developing apps that will bring out a positive change and Niyantran is part of that effort. Once we add value and bring in a positive change, we believe that success will follow,” stated Saquibuddin.

The final year Mechanical Engineering students of ATME College of Engineering, Mysuru — AathirMd. Suhaib, Anthony Johny, AquibArbaz and MujahidKhan — as a part of their project work, has developed a low cost, compact and versatile tractor named Nano Tractor.
The farming sector, especially vegetable growers and horticulturists, were in need of a small sized, economical and easy to maintain type of farm equipment. The new Nano Tractor developed by the students may be the answer for it.
Students to begin with have surveyed the farmers in and around Mysuru and understood the necessity of a smaller and versatile farm equipment at affordable cost. Then they have come up with the idea of fabricating a Tractor with a relatively smaller engine but can perform various farming activity with advantages like easy handling and less maintenance.
They have used an old 600 CC, 7.5 bhp engine of an auto- rickshaw and other parts from old vehicles. The performance test conducted indicates that it definitely fulfils the requirements of the small farmers as stated above.
The subject knowledge gained in their engineering course and with the able guidance of N. Rakshith, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, they have successfully completed the Nano Tractor Project at a cost of Rs. 60,000.
The Model and Concept can be used to design and manufacture in large scale can definitely help a sector of Farming community.
The students’ effort has been hailed by many including the industry people and the farmers. Principal and staff members have congratulated them on their feat.

Mustafa, who got 80 per cent in II PU and emerged a topper in Veerashaiva college, near Ballari city.
Mustafa did the unbelievable; he used his toes to write the II PU exams
Getting 80 per cent in II PU may not be a remarkable feat today, but it is extraordinary indeed when it has been achieved by a student without both hands. Writing with his toes, Mustafa emerged the topper in Veerashaiva College near Ballari city.
Son of Dasgir Sab, a lorry driver, and Maqbul Banu of Kolagal village, Mustafa (18) was born disabled. He is the second of three siblings and the only one who is disabled in his family.
Rejects assistance
Practice made this studious boy perfect. For the PU exam, Mustafa rejected all assistance extended to the disabled. “Neither did I take any assistance to write the exam, nor did I take exemption for writing language papers,” he said.
His score card reads: 93 in Kannada, 70 in English, 82 in history, 60 in economics, 86 in political science and 83 in social studies. “I have applied for re-evaluation of the economics paper,” he said.
K. Gadilingappa, his teacher, has been his friend, philosopher and guide. “I was transferred to Kolagal around six years ago, and I was astonished and proud to see that Mustafa was independent and faced challenges on his own. Seeing his self-confidence and positive attitude, I helped him get a scholarship for the disabled and gave him moral support to motivate him,” Mr. Gadilingappa said.
Mustafa, who had secured 74 per cent in his SSLC exams, said: “I want to become an IAS officer and serve the country.”
