Eight names have been submitted online for the Padma awards by the Delhi Government.
Of them, according to an Indian Express report seven names have been recommended for Padma Shri, one for Padma Bhushan.
The report claimed that seven names have come from Lieutenant Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung and one has been sent by a committee under the chairmanship of the chief secretary of Delhi. OKHLATIMES.COM independently could not authenticate the claim.
Of the eight names recommended, on the list is Dr Khalid Mahmood, former Jamia Millia Islamia’s Department of Urdu, in the field of Literature and Education. Sources said LG Jung, when he was vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, used to regularly take classes in Deewan-E-Ghalib.
Dr Mahmood, who even today visits the L-G’s residence once in a week to discuss Deewan-E-Ghalib, told OKHLATIMES.COM that he is not aware of the development. Born in Saronj-Madhya Pradesh on 15th January 1948, Dr Mahmood is a noted Urdu writer and has won several awards for his literary work.
OKHLATIMES.COM had earlier reported quoting Dr Mahmood that Jung is head over heels in love with Ghalib and has a good grasping power. It is my pleasure to discuss the subject with him, he had said then,
It is understood that Jung as an eight-year-old student used to recite ghazals written by Ghalib whenever Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Education Minister, used to visit his swanky Daryaganj house in Old Delhi. Grandson of Moulvi Samiullah, a close associate of Syed Ahmed Khan, young Jung, in his later days lost touch with Ghalib. But after coming to Jamia he had renewed his interest in the great poet and writer.
Dr Mahmood used to interact with Jung four days a week for one hour after 5.30 pm.
Jung, son-in-law of Dr Abdul Jalil Faridi, wants to contribute to the development of Urdu in India and Maktaba JMI, Dr Mahmood had claimed then.

Nazia said her actions were spontaneous and she didn’t hesitate even for a second to think about her won safety.
Agra :
Amidst the communally surcharged atmosphere in Agra following, the killing of VHP leader Arun Mahor, this is a story that both communities need to take lessons from and then celebrate it.
15-year-old Nazia was on Tuesday awarded the Rani Laxmibai bravery award by chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, for saving a 6-year-old Hindu girl from kidnappers in August last.
It was the afternoon on August 7, when Nazia, a student of Saghir Fatima Mohammadia Girls Inter College, was returning home when she heard cries for help from a young girl, who was being forcibly pulled on a motorcycle by two youths.
Unmindful of her own safety, Nazia rushed to the girl’s help and held her hand and managed to pull her away from the kidnappers, who then fled the spot.
It was only after she had rescued the girl, Dimpy, Nazia learnt that she was her junior from school. Today, when tension prevails between the two communities, Dimpy’s parents treat Nazia as their own daughter and are indebted to her for saving their child from the clutches of the kidnappers.
Talking to TOI on phone after receiving her award, Nazia said her actions were spontaneous and she didn’t hesitate even for a second to think about her won safety. “It was about 12.30 PM when I heard Dimpy’s cries for help. I just rushed to her and caught hold of her hand”, she said.
Recalling the moment, Nazia said, “It was like a tug of war for 2 minutes. While they tried pulling her on the motorcycle, I kept pulling her back”, she said adding that the suspects finally gave up and fled.
Nazia said since the incident had happened near Sadarbhatti area, which is just 100 meters away from their school, she immediately rushed there with Dimpy and informed the Principal. “Dimpy was crying. After the school authorities informed the police, I took her home to her parents”, she said adding that she is now treated as a daughter in Dimpy’s home.
When contacted, Dimpy said she was very happy that “didi” had been awarded for her bravery. “Agar didi uss din na hoti to woh log mujhe le jaate (they would have taken me away that day if ‘didi’ hadn’t been there)”, she said.
Describing the award ceremony as a moment of “pride” of her, Nazia said she would do the same if something like this ever happens again. The award also carries a cheque of Rs one lakh.
Haji Jamiluddin Qureshi, Manager of Saghir Fatima Mohammadia Girls Inter College, said, “there is no religious discrimination in our school. Even the students do not discriminate between themselves because of their religious beliefs”.
He said, “in our school we have Muslim girls learning Sanskrit and Hindus girls taking lessons in Urdu”.
On the eve of the country’s 69th Independence Day, the Abbie Rich Inter College, one of the oldest schools in Uttar Pradesh, is struggling to preserve its heritage. The school building, a hundred years old, is in dire need of repairs. The school is the alma mater of Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah, who, long before their participation in the Kakori train robbery of 1927, were classmates and friends here. The school even has their attendance records up to 1919.
Abbey Rich is owned by the Methodist Church of India (MCI) and run on funds raised by Christian minority institutions. The nearly 700 students are mostly from poor families, with no fees charged from them till class VIII. At present, the school is looking for funds to renovate its buildings. However, fund constraints and absence of financial help from the government has brought the school to dire straits.
Abbey Rich has a past that is intimately connected with Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country. Bismil and Ashfaqullah forged their well-known friendship while students here. Moreover, its alumni fought in both the First and Second World Wars. In the latter, three teachers and five students are known to have joined the armed forces. Their names have been commemorated in a wall plaque.
In 1991, some students put up statues of the two martyrs on the school grounds. Abbey Rich authorities have since wanted to replace them with better statues in marble and have written several times to the state government. However, no reply has been received. Meanwhile, the statues are placed facing the wall, making it difficult for anyone to see the faces either from inside or outside the school.
“Abbie Leonard Rich was an American social worker who came to Shahjahanpur in the 1850s and began teaching children under a tree. In 1857, he was forced to flee the place because people did not know he was not connected to the East India Company,” said principal Mihir Phillips.
Rich returned a few years later and the government gave him some land on rent to set up a school. In 1867, it moved to another building and got affiliation till class X, one of the first in the province. Finally it moved into the current building in 1916, build on land donated by a local nawab.
“We still have the attendance records of Ashfaqullah and Ram Prasad Bismil. They were here till class VIII, in section B actually. The students and staff feel proud to share this heritage,” said Phillips.
There is an important incident from the freedom struggle connected to both martyrs. In 1919, police raided the school to arrest both the boys. “But then principal Rufus Charan stopped the police at the gate. This gave time to the two boys to escape,” the principal said.
Professor Bikram Mani, who retired from the school told TOI, “This used to be the best school of the city but everything changed with time. We provide free education and this is probably not what people need these days. Otherwise, it would have been declared a heritage institution.”

How would you like to receive a surprise package of books, hand picked specially for you, at your doorstep every month? An initiative of Mohammed Musab, a fresh BBA graduate and his friends, ‘Read a Book Challenge’ is giving bookworms in the city a new excuse to curl up in bed and stay put.
Readers who register for the challenge on their Facebook page will receive three to four books, beautifully packaged along with a handwritten personal note. At the end of the month, the books are collected and a new package of surprise titles is delivered.
“I have been an avid reader from childhood and I used to tell my friends in college to develop the habit of reading. They told me that they couldn’t decide what to read. So I recommended books for them,” said Musab. That was how the idea behind the challenge came to him and he decided to give it a shot.
The first step was to convince ‘endorsers’ to let him lend their books to strangers. “Book-lovers are very possessive about their collections. I had to assure them that I would take care of their books,” he added. Besides, he offered them the incentive of earning money through their books. After the first month, the readers are charged a nominal amount of Rs 150 which is used to cover costs and pay the endorser between Rs 15 and Rs 20 for each book lent. “I really liked the idea and my book collection was lying idle at home. Being an avid reader myself, I saw this as a chance to help people inculcate the habit of reading,” said Mohammed Shuaib Mumtaz, the first endorser who has contributed 150 books to the inventory. Musab got his friends on board — Sneh Jain designs the packaging, HayattNoorul makes promotional videos and posters and Rishav Jain and Smriti Menon help with the execution. The team delivered the first batch of books on June 15. Already, they have over 100 readers and 10 endorsers on board contributing over 2,500 books to their inventory.
Word of their initiative spread and people in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and even Srinagar have requested them to bring the challenge to their cities. Though most of their readers are in the age group of 20 to 23, now even parents are showing interest.
Having received two packages so far, Ayesha Shuaib is happy with the variety her nine-year-old son is being exposed to. “He has got books on the themes of adventure, mystery and school amongst others. As a parent, it is a great relief for me because I don’t have to make multiple trips to the library to keep him engaged,” she said.
Monthly surprises
Meanwhile, they are preparing to deliver monthly surprises to their growing number of readers. An engineer is helping them develop a website and software to manage the inventory. They are also in the process of developing an algorithm to automatically select books based on the readers’ preference.
“I have received offers from investors. However, I haven’t accepted any for now because I am not sure what I am dealing with. I don’t know if this is going to be a small startup or the next big thing so I want to let it grow slowly,” said Musab.
