Hockey India congratulates new FIH World Panel Umpire Javed Shaikh

Mumbai, MAHARASHTRA :

JavedShaikhMPOs16dec2017

New Delhi (ANI):

Hockey India on Thursday congratulated  Javed Shaikh on  being promoted to the FIH World Panel Umpire (Outdoor Hockey) by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

The FIH announced its decision on Wednesday after his name was recommended by Hockey India and supported by the Asian Hockey Federation.

The 41-year-old from Mumbai began his career as an umpire in 2000 at a local tournament. In 2002, he was called-up as a national umpire followed by an opportunity at the 2003 Under-21 Invitational Cup in Poland where he served as an international umpire. Over the last decade, Shaikh has umpired at major events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games as well as the 2014 Men’s World Cup in Hague, The Netherlands and was also called up as an umpire during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“This is an emotional moment for me. I see this as a recognition for my hard work over the past 15 years. Being in the FIH World Panel Umpire (Outdoor Hockey) is very prestigious and I am grateful to Hockey India for their constant support,” expressed  Javed Shaikh on the side-lines of the on-going 52nd Bombay Gold Cup where he is umpiring.

Shaikh further stressed upon the role of  Hockey India in promoting umpires and their extensive programs that has helped several enthusiasts to take up umpiring as a career.

“As an umpire it is extremely important to get support from national federation and I am fortunate that Hockey India promotes umpires in a big way. It’s not just the exposure in terms of round-the-year umpire clinics and domestic assignments to give us match experience but they also send us programs on fitness which is essential for an umpire at any level,” he stated.

Congratulating  Javed Shaikh on his promotion,  Hockey India’s Secretary General Md. Mustaque Ahmad said, “I congratulate  Javed Shaikh on his promotion to the  FIH World Panel Umpire (Outdoor Hockey) by the FIH. It is a recognition for his 15 years of tireless efforts as an umpire and such recognition will only encourage more enthusiasts to take up umpiring in hockey. It is a matter of pride for us when umpires represent India in top tournaments across the world. I wish Shaikh the very best for his future endeavours.” (ANI)

Bengal awaits the return of two Everesters

Ichhapur (Barrackpore subdivision of North 24 Parganas District), WEST BENGAL :

Kuntal and Sahabuddin during the Everest expedition

KOLKATA:

Forty eight hours after they had scaled Mount Everest on Sunday, Shaikh Sahabuddin and Kuntal Karar were flown off to Kathmandu. Families of both of them are now praying hard for the speedy recovery of Karar whose tryst with the mountains has left him battling serious frostbite. However, Karar has assured his family that all is well and he would be back soon to savour home-cooked ‘doi chicken’ with naan.

Sahabuddin, who works in the Metal & Steel Factory of Ichhapur, has become a big hero for his colleagues. “Having scaled many mountains, my husband was always a hero in office. But with the Everest mission, he has become a bigger hero. His office colleagues and bosses are in Kathmandu to receive and congratulate him. Even my father is hoping to come down on May 28 from Kashmir to wish him,” said Sahabuddin’s wife Ruksana, who hails from Kashmir.

SahabuddinEverest02MPOs15dec2017

His younger brother, Shaikh Salauddin, works as a heating ventilation air conditioning engineer and is proud of his sibling’s achievement. Apparently, two months before the expedition, Sahabuddin underwent a surgery. Yet, nothing could stop him from wanting to reach the Everest. Salauddin is waiting to begin the celebrations back home once he returns. “Whatever happens, we were always sure that he would make the summit,” said Salauddin, who also dreams of scaling the Everest one day.

The family has been told that Sahabuddin is perhaps the first Indian Muslim mountaineer to have scaled the Everest. “We have been living in Ichhapur for 30 years. For us, divisions based on religion, caste or creed don’t matter,” he said.

Sahabuddin’s two-and-a-half-year-old son Shaikh Uzair is excited. He keeps on telling everyone he meets about his father having reached the top of the world. “On Tuesday morning, my husband made a video call at 8.30am. Both of us started crying. There were tears of happiness. He kept on saying that it was our collective good wishes that had helped him reach the Everest. My son was asleep when the first call came. When he later called at 11 am from Kathmandu, the entire family spoke to him,” Ruksana added.

Initial euphoria of having reached the summit died down when the Karar family heard about Kuntal’s frostbite. On Monday evening, the family got tense after news trickled in about Kuntal being seriously ill. “We couldn’t sleep the whole of Monday night. In the morning, we were thinking of organising funds so that we could reach Kathamandu. But thankfully, he called up at 8.30 in the morning and assured us that he is fine. He even sent us photos from the hospital,” said Kuntal’s sister-in-law Mamomi from their Howrah residence.

Mountaineering has been an addiction for Kuntal. After completing his diploma in engineering, he took up a job before shifting to his own business. “Kuntal’s teacher Anol Das had died in the mountains. A year later, Kuntal had rescued his body. However no amount of persuasion could dissuade him from being smitten by the mountaineering bug,” said his brother, Kanchan.

While at the summit, Kuntal had wanted to use a satellite phone to speak to his family. “But a fellow-mountaineer who had the phone was too exhausted. Kuntal couldn’t ask him to lend the satellite phone so that he could speak to us from there. That’s his only regret,” she said.

Rabindra Sarobar:

Two teenage rowers from Calcutta have ended a seven-year wait for Bengal by winning bronze in the junior national championships.

Sanglap Bose, 16, and Md Rahmat Ali, 15, finished third, missing out on silver by two seconds and gold by six.

The 38th edition of the event was held in Odisha’s Jagatpur between November 14 and 19.

The last time any male rower from Bengal made it to the podium in the junior nationals was in 2010 when Kapil Pincha won bronze in single sculls in Hyderabad in 2010.

“We finished first in the heats but couldn’t hold on to our nerves in the finals,” Bose, a Class XI student of Julien Day School, Bhowanipore, said.

The team completed the race in 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Telangana came first, followed by Madhya Pradesh.

Bose and Ali , a Class X student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ballygunge, practise at the Bengal Rowing Club.

“Junior nationals are more competitive than the sub-juniors. The 1km watercourse is a big challenge for our rowers because all watercourses in Calcutta are smaller,” Rajesh Agarwal, rowing captain, Bengal Rowing Club, said.

The teens had been preparing for the tournament since July. They practised early morning and in the evening.

In the pairs, two rowers have an oar each, compared to double sculls where each rower has two oars. “You need a certain level of physical strength to do well in pairs. The hours at the gym are as important as the practice sessions on water,” Agarwal said.

A low carbohydrate protein rich diet and a complete bar on junk food was also part of the preparations.

Ali stands at 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 52kg. Bose is 5’5″ and weighs 63kg.

“The immediate reaction after the race was that of disappointment. But we badly wanted a medal. We had aerated drinks after six months to celebrate the podium finish,” Ali said. His rowing career started at the club in 2014, a year after Bose had joined the club.

The two rowed together for the first time in 2016 and won gold in the state championships held at the club in January. They followed it up with gold in double sculls in the national sub-juniors in Chennai in June. “They keep pulling each other’s leg but on a boat they complement each other perfectly,” Agarwal said.

Experienced Shamim Khan weathers the storm, beats young Veer Ahlawat in playoff to lift second IndianOil SERVO Masters Golf title

NEW DELHI :

Shamim narrows gap with Order of Merit leader Udayan Mane.

Shamim produced a fine performance through the week to lift the title
Shamim produced a fine performance through the week to lift the title

Digboi, Assam :

The experienced Shamim Khan weathered the storm called Veer Ahlawat to register his second win at the IndianOil SERVO Masters Golf on Saturday.

The 39-year-old Shamim came through in a playoff against the 21-year-old Veer after both the Delhi-based professionals ended the regulation 72 holes with identical scores of nine-under-279 at the tranquil Digboi Golf Links. It was Khan’s third title of the season and his 15th overall.

Khan took home the winner’s cheque of Rs. 6 lakh from the Rs. 40 lakh event and continued in second place on the PGTI Order of Merit. However, with Shamim’s season earnings moving to Rs. 35,58,250, he has now narrowed the gap between himself and the money list leader Udayan Mane to just Rs. 1 lakh.

Shamim Khan (72-66-71-70), the overnight joint leader, looked in control when he sank his second birdie of the day, a 35-footer on the fifth, which gave him a two-shot lead. But there was a twist when Veer Ahlawat (71-70-69-69), who was overnight tied third and one off the lead, produced birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth while Shamim dropped a bogey on the eighth.

After nine holes, Veer, playing one group ahead of the leaders, drew level with Shamim to emerge as a top contender. Ahlawat, playing only his second season as a professional, finally took the sole lead when he drove the 12th green to set up a birdie. Veer, who plays at the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, dropped a shot on the 13th but regained his outright lead with a brilliant chip-putt birdie on the 15th.

Ahlawat then missed a few chances to seal his maiden title, notably an up and down for par on the 18th. The match went into a playoff as Khan made pars on his last 10 holes which included a crucial five feet conversion on the 18th.

Veer hit the green while Shamim was in the bunker after two shots each during the playoff on the par-4 18th. Khan managed to turn the tables with a gem of a bunker shot that set up a tap-in for par. The six-foot-three-inch tall Ahlawat, on the other hand, three-putted from 20 feet for a bogey that gave Shamim his 13th PGTI title.

Shamim, who previously won in Digboi in 2014, said, “My putting wasn’t great for the second consecutive day and when I missed a two-footer for par on the eighth, I knew I was in trouble.

“However, I hung in there with pars all the way till the end. I was quite happy to take it into the playoff after having trailed Veer on the back-nine. In a playoff situation, experience always counts. That’s what saw me through at the end. I felt Veer tried a bit too hard during the playoff.

“The birdies were hard to come by on the last two days but my chipping average was excellent. I landed all my chips within a short distance of the pins. The win puts me in a good position to once again contend for the Order of Merit crown,” added Khan, the 2012 PGTI Order of Merit champion.

Veer Ahlawat, who came close to causing a major upset on Saturday, jumped 14 spots to 16th position in the Order of Merit as a result of his career-best runner-up finish.

Ahlawat said, “The four birdies on the first 12 holes really got my confidence going. I checked the leaderboard on the 15th and that’s when I realized that I was very close to victory.

“I knew Shamim will not be easy to beat but I was quite confident as I was hitting and putting really well. I just couldn’t end it well. I didn’t feel much pressure but I think I got a little excited.

“But I’m quite happy with this performance as it is my best finish as a professional. I feel I’m now coming into my own after an ordinary rookie season on the PGTI last year. Every aspect of my game is better this year.”

Manu Gandas of Gurgaon, another 21-year-old, fired a final round of 71 to take third place at seven-under-281.

Bangladesh’s Md Zamal Hossain Mollah struck a 67, the best score of the last round, to end up in tied fourth at five-under-283 along with Noida’s Rahul Bajaj (71).

Bengaluru’s M Dharma, the joint leader from round three, slipped to tied 10th at two-under-286 after a fourth round of 77.

Digboi’s Dulal Kalowar (76-74-76-77), the only local player to make the cut, shot a 77 on Saturday to end the week in tied 47th at 15-over-303.
