Samima Khatun: Multiple-medal winner in National Paralympics for West Bengal, but no recognition or rewards

Basant Village(Nalhati Block) Birbhum District, WEST BENGAL :

It is a well-known fact in India that compared to cricketers, sportspersons belonging to every other discipline have to struggle to make their name and earn a livelihood. The situation gets worse with athletes, and more so when they are physically handicapped. But as we showed last week, even among such struggles, there are enough shining lights like Bodruddoja Saikh. And among the many students that he has trained, Samima Khatun would surely rank among the top: with more than 15 medals in National Paralympic games in the past four years including four this year, Khatun should have been hailed as a role model for millions of physically handicapped citizens of this country. Instead, despite all the laurels that she has brought to West Bengal, she is still struggling to ensure that she and her family’s future is slightly better than it is now.

In fact, the news of her amazing achievements barely made it to national media and except for a small news item in The Telegraph, Khatun’s name did not even make it to the news portals.

Khatun, who is 16, won four medals at the National Championships held in Udaipur this year. Samima was among the three participants to the said Championship who participated from Bengal who won two gold, one silver, and one bronze. The other two are Reshmita Maal from Gobindapur village, a graduation first-year student in a nearby college situated in Nalhati, and Saina Khatun, an eighth-grade student of Koitha village. Reshmita secured two silvers and one bronze and Saina one bronze.

Samima hails from Basanta village of Nalhati block of the Birbhum district and is the daughter of Maijuddin Mondol, who works as a daily wage labourer and earns about Rs 200 per day. Samima completed her Matriculation from a nearby Madrasa, Nalhati High Madrasa School and is currently enrolled in the eleventh-grade (Science) for her Higher Secondary from Nalhati High School for Girls.

According to her parents, she is a patient of Genu Varum, or bandy-leg, an irredeemable deformity in the legs, mostly from the knees to the ankles which she got at the time of her birth. “Even if it is remediable, we are unable to spend the money needed for the operation. It is very hard for me to run a family of six members with an income of Rs 200 rupees per day and we can only dream of spending so much money for her treatment”, her father said.

After securing her position in the State-level Swimming Championship in 2013 held in Kolkata’s Kumartuli, Samima set out her journey into the National level championships under the guidance of Bodruddoja Saikh. Since then, she has succeeded to retain her position in the National Championships for the last four years held in four different cities of India. In 2014, she won two gold, two silver that was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh; two gold, two silver, and one bronze in Belgaon, Karnataka for 2015 and two silver and two gold for 2016 in Rajasthan’s Jaipur.

In her early days, she used to practice swimming in her village pond. “When I was in my eighth standard, one day I was swimming in the nearby pond of my village. There my present Coach (Saikh) saw me and asked me whether I would like to swim under his guidance as a part of the competition. After that, whatever I have achieved now only for his insistence and influences,” she said. She started practising swimming in a lonely pond near Nalhati, quite far away from her village.

Bodruddoja Saikh spoke to TwoCircles.net about the tribulations that they faced at the start. “It was very tough for me to train her in the village pond as many adults would stand with their mobiles to capture her photos. Even locals would rebuff me for doing these sorts of things with a Muslim girl.” He added, “But when Samima won some competitions and news about it came out in papers, people left rebuking me. Since then, I started taking my students to a pond quite far from the villages near Nalhati to train them.”

Samima with her Coach, Bodruddoja Saikh.

When she was asked whether there was any problem with her parents to allow her swimming, she said, “We are very poor. So my parents allowed me to do what I am doing so that I can help them financially in order to get rid of poverty.”

But the bitter truth is that even after bringing laurels to West Bengal at the national level competitions, the Bengal government did not pay any attention to the girl or to her family. Though local administration did facilitate the winners this year after their return, no financial help was assured to them and the students are way too poor to afford training in the reputed clubs. Though other states have sanctioned some money for the winners at the national level, Bengal government is yet to think over that. Saikh lamented, “The Haryana sanctioned Rs 3 lakh for gold winners, Rs 2 lakh for silver winners and Rs 1 lakh for bronze winners. Recently, even the Bihar government implemented the same. But our government has done nothing like this. If the government does so, then lakhs of physically deformed children may get enthusiasm to devote themselves to these sorts of sports.”

Samima’s father also urged the same. “If benevolent persons come forward to help my daughter to achieve her ultimate successes, then we would be grateful to all of them,” he added.

Named by the game

Midnapore /  Salt Lake – WEST BENGAL :

Moidul Islam poses with his trophies at his FD Block home. (Sudeshna Banerjee)
Moidul Islam poses with his trophies at his FD Block home. (Sudeshna Banerjee)

The Maidan may know the former Mohammedan Sporting star as Moidul Islam but that wasn’t his name when he came to Calcutta from Midnapore in 1973. “I was born Mohiul Islam. It was commentator Ajay Basu who kept using this name on the radio. And before I knew, I was Moidul to the entire state. So I too started using that name,” says the FD Block resident.

Name change was not new to Islam. He was spotted on the village fields by the games secretary of State Transport Corporation Dasrathi Sinha. “On his advice, I shifted to Calcutta. He even arranged for my accommodation at the STC tent on the Maidan. Whenever I visited his home, he would introduce me to his elder sister as Mridul.”

After playing a year in the second division for Suburban Club, he was signed by Kidderpore Fotbal Club. In 1977, he got his first job with Port Trust of India, which had a football team. But when he got a call-up from Mohammedan in 1979, he quit without telling his family. “Word reached our village that I was jobless. I was away playing in Nagji trophy then. My father got worried that if I got injured my career would be over. I had to reason with him.” But he would soon get another job, with Food Corporation of India.

He shifted to Salt Lake in 1983, putting up first at Karunamoyee Housing Estate. He was with Mohammedan then. “I was the only club footballer staying in Salt Lake in those days. People would queue up in front of my building, seeking free match tickets. In those days, the club gave us tickets against deduction from our payments. I could not manage even after picking up a thousand.” He would shift to the FCI Quarters in DL Block in 1991.

Islam gets nostalgic talking of the 80s. “People would queue up from 3am at the Maidan in search of tickets. If we lost a match, it would get difficult for us to get out of the ground. We were escorted home in police vans. Football was rarely on TV except for the big matches at the Salt Lake stadium. Where is that kind of craze now? People don’t go to the ground even if they get tickets.”

MoidulIslam02MPOs06oct2017

The big crowds for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup, he suspects, were driven by a craze to attend a World Cup and also to see the renovated stadium.

He gets goosebumps on remembering the 1.10 lakh people in the stands when East Bengal played Diamant club of Cameroon in 1990. “Anandabazar Patrika printed a picture of me tackling Roger Milla (the 42-year-old star of the year’s World Cup). He got upset that I stuck to his side through the match. Diamant won but by a slender margin of 2-1.”

Other than Durand Cup and the IFA Shield, he has been a part of every tournament win in his 10 years with Mohammedan, three years with East Bengal and one year with Mohun Bagan. Among his clubmates, he has great respect for Mohd. Habib, Gautam Sarkar, Shabir Ali, Prasun Banerjee, Prasanta Banerjee among Indians and the Iranian duo Majid Baskar and Jamshid Nassiri. “My son Tariq grew up in their laps.” He remembers having brought Chima Okorie to Mohammedan while he was a student in Waltair. Emeka (Ezeugo), Chibuzor (Nwakanma) and Christopher also played with him at Mohammedan. He is upset that because of retired players from abroad being hired in the cash-rich Indian Super League, local strikers are not getting enough opportunities.

He is not sure how much hosting the U-17 World Cup would help Indian football. “Unless the infrastructure is in place and sports is made mandatory in school, nothing will happen. Around the time Mannada (Sailen Manna) played football, they were close to the other teams. But the rest of the world improved in leaps and bounds while we stagnated. Look at the standard of the youth teams of African nations like Ghana and Mali which came to the tournament!”

Salt Lake may be blessed with grounds, but parents here, he says, think football is too laborious a sport.

Islam is a poster boy for communal harmony. “We are a family of pirs. My uncle was a maulana in a madrasa. But we grew up in a harmonious atmosphere, with friends from one community participating in festivals of the others.” All hell broke loose when he fell in love with Sonali Das. “She was the only daughter and their family was dead against this alliance. Nonetheless we went for a registered marriage in 1983.” Even his daughter-in-law Priyanka is Hindu. “Tariq too has married for love. We had a grand reception in FD community hall in 2010,” smiles the 62-year-old who can sometimes be spotted playing football with the likes of musician Upal and filmmaker Shoojit Sircar at the Bikash Bhavan ground.

Meerut , UTTAR PRADESH :

There was joy and excitement at the residence of 23-year-old Meerut boy Shahzar Rizvi, who won gold in the 10m air pistol event at the Commonwealth shooting championship in Australia on Wednesday. Indian shooters registered a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 10m air pistol with Rizvi, a resident of Meerut’s Chhota Mawana village, claiming gold ahead of Omkar Singh (silver) and Jitu Rai (bronze) at Brisbane.

In the women’s 10m air rifle event, India’s Pooja Ghatkar won gold with a score of 249.8 in the final, beating India compatriot Anjum Moudgil (248.7), who claimed silver. India won two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal at the championship in Australia on Wednesday.

Rizvi’s father Shamshaad Ahmed, a freight contractor at a private company in Meerut, said, “All of us at home are very happy for him. He has done the entire country proud. I still remember the day nine years ago when he told me how he wanted to train as a shooter. I did not have enough money to buy him a gun, but I told him to pursue his dream and he started practising by borrowing weapons from others. It was only in 2012 that he got a gun of his own.”

Shahzar completed his schooling from Jawahar Inter College in Meerut and started pursuing his dream. He went on to win a silver medal in the 58th National Shooting Championship Competition (NSCC), Pune in 2014 and then won a gold medal in the 59th NSCC, Delhi in 2015.

“His gold medal in Delhi helped him secure a place in Indian Air Force, where he works as a sergeant. After he got employed with IAF, his game improved further as he got access to better weapons. Later, he got a bronze medal in National Games 2015 and a gold medal in 9th Asian Airgun Championship in Iran,” said Ahmar Rizvi, Shahzar’s younger brother. Ahmar is also a shooter and has played till pre-nationals. A head injury had forced him to opt out for some time, but he is back now and aims for the nationals.

Shahzar’s mother Shahjahan Rizvi – a homemaker – says she is eagerly waiting for her son’s arrival. The gold medallist is going to tie the knot with a local girl on November 18. The family said his victory in Australia has doubled their excitement and happiness for his wedding.

Mohammed Siraj: Auto driver’s son’s rags-to-riches story is an inspiration for all struggling cricketers

New Delhi:

You call it a fairytale rise up the Indian ranks claiming it to be a classic rags-to-riches story, or praise his bowling prowess as he honed it little by little, but Mohammed Siraj’s run from an absolute nobody to a call-up for the T20I series against New Zealand has created quite a stir in Indian cricketing fraternity.

It was only in late Monday afternoon that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 16-member squad for the three-match T20I series against a touring New Zealand side. Much to the surprise of many, Siraj and Shreyas Iyer – two uncapped players were named in the squad for the shortest format of the game.

The 23-year-old speedster from Hyderabad, born to an auto rickshaw driver, came to limelight with his scintillating performance in the 10th season of Indian Premier League (IPL). And it was not just after the Hyderabad-based franchise roped in the pacer with a whopping INR 2.6 crore, but also because he lived up to the expectations finishing off the campaign with 10 wickets in six matches. Well, it did include a stunning four-fer against Gujarat Lions that helped the former champions qualify for the playoffs. But that is not where it had all started.

It was at the age of seven that Siraj fell in love with the Gentlemen’s game. Back then, it was mere bunking classes to play tennis-ball cricket. Later in 2015, he picked up the red ball and bagged quite a few five-wicket hauls. He soon got a call-up for Hyderabad’s Under-23 side and then the senior team and finally for Ranji. In the 2016-17 season, the pacer scalped 41 wickets at an average of 18.92 as he became the third-highest wicket-taker in the campiagn after Shahbaz Nadeem and Anupam Sanklecha. And what followed next was a maiden IPL season.

He then recieved a call for the India A series against South Africa where he continued with his brilliancy picking up 10 wickets. Of late, he played against New Zealand A where he picked up four wickets in three matches. Overall, he has played 16 T20 matches, picking up 26 wickets at an average of 18.73.

“I knew that some time in future I will get a call-up but did not expect it this soon. I can’t tell you how happy I am. When I told my parents, they were speechless. It’s a dream come true,” said Siraj in an interview to PTI.

“Whatever I am today is primarily because of Ranji Trophy performance. My 40-odd wickets last season gave me the confidence. There’s nothing like getting wickets in first- class cricket. I was picked for Rest of India after that and because of Ranji Trophy, I got the IPL deal. So 60 per cent credit for this call-up is performance in first-class cricket,” he added. “I can’t tell you how much I am indebted to Bharath Arun sir. He is a brilliant coach. Last year, he was with the Hyderabad team and for the first time, I got an insight to the kind of variations needed to survive at the highest level.”

Local boy Fouaad sizzles in Italian Equestrian trials

Bengaluru, KARNATAKA :

Montelibretti, Italy :

The thunder of hooves is equestrian buffs’ delight.

And local boy Fouaad Mirza made the Indian equestrian fraternity proud by galloping to fame in the first two trials at the Asian Games CCI equestrian event held in Montelibretti, Italy.

The top Indian rider produced an exemplary effort to win the event in style and on the strength of this performance is certain to spearhead the Indian challenge in the Asian Games next year.

The in-form Indian saddle artiste, pitted against some of the best Italian riders, produced a series of winning jumps to seize the initiative early on in the big event.

The top score posted by Fouaad in the championship is a couple of points behind the gold medalwinning score registered in the Asian Games last year and considering the fact that Fouaad didn’t really break sweat to register the top mark, he is a big medal hope in Indonesia while staking the Indian claim in the event at the Asian Games.

The first Indian rider to post a victory in Europe, Fouaad, training under German Olympian Bettina Hoy, will compete in Le Pouget, France next month before parading his skills in a couple of championships in Germany. Bettina immensely pleased with Fouaad’s progress made no secret of her opinion that the top Indian rider is peaking right for the big Asian event.

Vice-president of the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) and head honcho of the Embassy Group, Jitu Virwani, said that a couple of other Indian riders, including one from the Army, are training in Germany and are on top of their game. “We have a great chance to win gold at the Asian Games and hopefully our riders will scale new high and put Indian equestrian on the international map,” said jitu Virwani, indicating that the top riders are comfortable partnering the big German warmbloods. “It is simple. We from our end are providing our riders the best horses and the onus is on them to go for gold,” said Jitu Virwani, who has roped in some of the best Show Jumpers on the circuit in Germany.

Silva Storai, the only woman jockey to register two Derby victories in flat racing, said Fouaad is a fine talent and is ready to make a mark on the international scene. “I have followed his progress from the time he successfully competed in many EPL championships at the Embassy International Riding School and he now looks ready to make the big league,” said Silva.
