Three decades after Police officer Moinul Haque made supreme sacrifice while fighting insurgents in Barpeta city of Assam, the government has declared him a martyr.
The move has sent a wave of joy and pride in his native village of of Garemari in the Barpeta district and the local panchayat has installed a memorial in his honour in the local school.
Sub-Inspector Moinul Haque of the Assam Police was shot dead on January 21, 1991 while he was on duty at the District Special Branch of the Police in Barpeta.
The 102nd Kumalliapara Gaon Panchayat recently erected a plaque in Moinul Haque’s memory at the local college in his native village on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Born in 1948 in Garemari village, Moinul Haque was a skilled and brave police officer and a socially conscious person. He was the founder of the Garemari Primary Health Centre, Babur Ali Molla ME Madrassa and other institutions in the Garemari area.
Soon after his schooling he was appointed in the Assam Police.
The local people, various organizations and his family members have expressed their gratitude to the government for honouring him after 32 years.
“We are pleased that the government has declared Moinul Haque, who sacrificed his life for the sake of the motherland, as a martyr,” said Bulbul Hussain, the government village chief of Garemari village.
He said the supreme sacrifice of the police officer to protect the dignity of Mother Assam will remain an example for the younger generation of Garemari area.

“My father, Shaheed Moinul Haque, was shot dead by militants on January 21, 1991 while on duty in the Assam Police. After 32 years, albeit late,” said Ismail Hussain, son of martyred police officer said.
“The government has declared him a martyr. I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Government of Assam and the Government of India for that. I also wish the souls of all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the motherland.”
The event was attended by the Acting Principal of the college Sirajul Haque, Assistant Inspector of Silk Department Hurmuz Ali, family members of martyred police officer Moinul Haque, officials of various local institutions and local people.

India’s bravest cop Saifullah was reflection of courage & compassion.

It has been four days when terrorists shot dead a senior constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Saifullah Qadri in Soura locality, besides, injuring his 9 year old daughter, a number of people can still be seen visiting his shattered family and his graveyard.
As per the family, slain Qadri joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police services in 2012 and was a senior constable. He was deputed with police’s elite anti-terrorism unit Special Operations Group (SOG), whose headquarters is dubbed ‘Cargo’.
Qadri was killed when he was on his way to drop off his daughter at the tuition center. Both father and daughter were rushed to SKIMS medical facility however the former succumbed to his injuries.
The slain policeman’s brother, Mohammad Syed Qadri told Rising Kashmir that his brother was helpful to everyone in the locality. He was off duty when the incident took place.
Terming his killing as “cold-blooded murder”, Mohammed stated that his brother was hope for the family. He was innocent and was doing his work professionally, he added.
“Saifullah was humble and why was he killed? He was running a family of five. I do not know whom to question!” asked confused Mohammed.
His 9-year-old daughter identified as Safa Qadri, who is a Class 3rd student, also sustained a bullet injury during the attack.
However, her condition is stated to be stable and undergoing surgery at a hospital.
Another family member said Qadri had returned just two days before as he had left for New Delhi for some work. He was a brave and hardworking person.
Narrating the fateful incident, he said Qadri was home that time after her 9-year daughter compelled him to drop her at the tuition center.
“Once the duo stepped out of their house and they were attacked by two bike-borne gunmen. They first fired upon his daughter and then fired six bullets at him, leaving him critically injured. Later he succumbed to his injuries at a hospital,” he said.
The family member further added that his daughter had pleaded before the gunmen not to kill her father but they did not listen to her screams.
Qadri was born and brought up in Khawaja Bazar and then his family shifted to Khanyar. After his marriage, he purchased his new house in Soura, where he was living with his family.
The father of slain policeman, Muhammad Syed Qadri is still in utter shock and was not able to speak to anybody. He is being treated and gets unconscious every now and then.
Another relative, Mohammad Usman, who had come to console the bereaved family, says this family has seen tragedy in their entire life.
Usman said before their son, their two daughters had also died,” he said.“It is painful to see them. Why did they (gunmen) kill him? He had not killed or harmed anybody in his entire life. We have never seen him carrying a gun or pistol in his hand,” he said.“But his killing broke our back,” he said. “I don’t know what crime he had done to deserve a death like this!”
As per neighbors, Saifullah was a caring and compassionate character and at the same time touched many lives in a short time. He was an ideal son who was an “obedient, responsible, and loving” person.
The slain cop is survived by his wife, two daughters (one injured), and a son.
Condemning the killing, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had tweeted, “I strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Soura, Srinagar. I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished.”
Earlier this week, Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said the entire society including families of the terrorists should condemn the attacks on an unarmed policeman and her 09-year-old daughter. “We will soon identify the attackers and kill them. Terrorists have been attacking the unarmed policemen who are on leave. We pay our rich tributes to the slain for his supreme sacrifice and stand by his family at this crucial juncture, “the IGP said.
The wreath-laying ceremony of slain SgCt Saifullah Qadri was held at District Police Lines, Srinagar.
Civil, CAPFs and & Police officers led by IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

A pall of gloom has descended on the house of Major Mustafa Bohra, co-pilots of the Indian Army Helicopter Cheetah that crashed at Siang, close to Tawan on the China border in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday killing five people onboard.
People from all walks of life, leaders, and Army officials have been visiting the family of Major Bohra in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Local media said Major Bohra is survived by his parents Fatima and Jallaludin Bohra, and sister Alfia Bohra.
His father works in Kuwait and was away when the sad news came, Both the women at home are inconsolable and mostly in an unconscious state.
Major Mustafa Bohra was the only son of his parents.

When the last report was filed Jallaudin Bohra was trying to fly home to be with his family in this hour of grief.
Hitesh Kumar, a resident of Udaipur, who knew the Bohra family, and who spoke to local media said that Major Bohra’s mother and sister are in bad condition and in a state of deep shock.
The family hails from Kheroda village and currently lives in the street of Ajanta Hotel in Udaipur city.
Vallabhnagar MLA Preeti Shaktawat visited the family on Saturday and spent time with the women and their relatives.
Major Bohra completed his primary education at Uday Shiksha Mandir Higher Secondary School, Kheroda. Later the family shifted to Udaipur city and he joined St. Paul’s School. He joined the Indian Army after his higher secondary.
Major Bohra’s body is expected to reach by Sunday evening. Besides Bohra, Major Vikas Bhambhu, CFN Tech AVN (AEN) Ashwin KV, Havaldar (OPR) Biresh Sinha, and NK (PPR) Rohitashv Kumar also died in the accident.
The Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) carrying five soldiers, including two pilots, was on a routine flight when it crashed at 10.43 am on Friday, October 21, near Miging, about 25 km south of Tuting.
Defense spokesman Lt Col AS Walia said the bodies of four other personnel were recovered from the crash site in the densely forested mountainous area, about 35 km from the Chinese border, on the evening of Friday, October 21.

A policeman was killed and a CRPF personnel injured when militants attacked a security forces team in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.
The attack took place in Pinglana area of the south Kashmir district.
“Terrorists fired upon a joint Naka party of CRPF & Police at Pinglana, Pulwama. In this terror attack, 01 Police personnel got martyred & 01 CRPF personnel got injured,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.
The police said reinforcements were rushed to the area and a search operation was launched.
A police spokesman identified the slain policeman as Javid Ahmad Dar.
He said the injured CRPF personnel was evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
Senior police officers along with reinforcement reached the terror crime spot, the spokesman added.
“We pay our rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifices made in the line of duty. We standby the family of the martyr at this crucial juncture and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured personnel,” the spokesperson said.
Police has registered a case, the investigation is in progress and officers are working to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime, he said.
The area has been cordoned off and a search is going on there, he added.
Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah condemned the attack.
“While condemning this attack I send my condolences to the family of the J&K police personnel who laid down his life in the line of duty today. I also send my best wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured CRPF personnel,” Abdullah wrote on Twitter.
The Peoples Conference too condemned the attack.
“We strongly condemn the militant attack upon the joint naka party of Police & CRPF at Pinglana (Pulwama) in which 1 Police personnel lost his life & 1 CRPF personnel got injured. Heartfelt condolences & sympathies with the family of the deceased and prayers for the injured,” it said in a tweet.

Indians and other historians have either tried to whitewash the revolutionary movements for freedom or presented these as disjointed localised efforts.
Even the largest movement of Azad Hind Fauj led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has been narrated in a staggered manner and an episodial manner like the battle of Burma (Mayanmar) and the battle of Imphal. The picture thus presented is of an army fighting at a frontier with no support elsewhere. This history needs to be revisited.
In 1930, Sayyid Sibghatullah Shah Al-Rashidi called Pir of Pagaro, a Muslim Saint from Sindh with a huge following, was arrested by the British Government for ‘creating disturbances’. He was accused of instigating anti-colonial feelings among his followers known as ‘Hurs’ (literally meaning free). The decision to send him to a prison away from Sindh rather shaped this anti-colonial Muslim saint into a nationalist revolutionary.
In the Bengal hail, he met several revolutionaries and realised that what he had experienced in his area was the same being experienced by others. He understood that British colonialism was destroying the nation and Hindu-Muslim unity was the only weapon to fight them.
From the prison, he started preaching nationalist messages. Sarah F. D. Ansari of the University of London in her book Sufi Saints and State Power: The Pirs of Sind, 1843 – 1947, writes, “messages strongly coloured with a radical nationalist tinge were smuggled out in the form of notes written in the margins and between the lines of books and magazines. They condemned the British for treating ‘Indians like donkeys’, loading them down with ‘England’s burdens’, and pointed out that the only reason why the British were able to rule over 300,000,000 people was that Indians were ‘cowards’.”
In 1936, when he returned to his seat at Khairpur in Sindh, Pir of Pagaro had turned a revolutionary.
He started establishing links with revolutionary leaders of Bengal as well as those living in Europe, especially Germany. He started inviting Congress leadership to his area and organise Hindu-Muslim unity meetings. We must keep in mind that it was 1938 and Subhas Chandra Bose was the President of Congress. Unsurprisingly when Subhas formed Forward Bloc after his famous differences with Mahatma Gandhi, Pir of Pagaro asked his followers to back Forward Bloc and denounced the stand of Congress.
In 1939, the centuries-old Hindu-Muslim unity of Sindh was severely shattered over the Manzilgah mosque dispute and the riots that followed. Pir of Pagaro ordered his large following of armed followers known as ‘ghazis’ to save Hindus from the Muslim fanatics. Sarah F. D. Ansari writes, “In his newspaper, the Pir-jo-Goth Gazette, he (Pir of Pagaro) called for Hindu-Muslim unity: ‘My forefathers’, he wrote, ‘treated Hindus and Muslims alike as a sacred trust. The same is my principle . .. Allah is the same as Parmatma, though with different names. I will be happy when I see temples and mosques together with only a wall dividing them and everyone [worshipping] according to their rights so that no one may have a grievance against the other’. In a similar vein, he denounced the Hindu Sabha and the Muslim League as divisive communal movements. Only when Hindus and Muslims combined would ‘peace . . . be achieved and satanic deeds . . . stopped’: Indians had to be ‘national minded’ and regard India as a country which belonged to all its inhabitants.”
An intelligence report dated October 1940 says, “Pir of Bharchundi is not liked by the Pir Pagaro, who disrespected the Pir of Bharchundi and sent him away from his ‘Kot’ when the Pir of Bharchundi last visited the Pir Pagaro… the reason for such treatment of the Pir to the Pir of Bharchundi was that the Pir of Bharchundi would not assist in getting the murderers of Hindus arrested.”
It further says, “Pir Pagaro has won great sympathy of the Hindus.” Sarah also points out how the Pir came out in support of a Muslim man’s right, who had earlier converted into Islam from Hinduism, to reconvert into Hinduism. “
Another intelligence report noted that Pir of Pagaro has enlisted at least 6,000 militants to fight with an oath to die for the cause. These militants were called ghazis. Ghazis had paraded and displayed their military skills in front of him during his visits to Jaisalmer and Jodhpur as well. The nationwide presence was a threat for the British. The report further noted, “the Pir was renewing his contacts with terrorists (terrorists was a term used by the English for revolutionaries) who had been in prison along with him in Bengal. His visits to Calcutta (Kolkata) were, it is said, performed for no other reason.”
The British apprehension was not wrong. Pir Pagaro had contacts with Bengali revolutionaries and Subhas. If Subhas raised an army on Eastern Front, Pir of Pagaro raised another on the Western Front. An intelligence report from 1941 noted, “He (Pir of Pagaro) has got his electric plant and radio set at which he and his followers hear Hindustani programs from Germany and then spread the German news in the villages which has a disquieting effect on the local people.” The report also pointed out that “the villainous activities of the Pir and his growing contempt of authority are becoming a byword throughout India”.
Pir of Pagaro was running an independent government in that region of Sindh with the help of his militia. The British Government arrested him in Karachi on the pretext of holding talks with him. His ghazis would not stop and kept attacking the British infrastructure. They were so much feared that the Legislative Assembly members did not want their names to become public for voting in favour of an act against Hurs (followers of Pir of Pagaro).
Sarah notes, “The level of fear which existed in Sind at the time even inside the Legislature was reflected in the session being held in camera. Members of the Assembly were not prepared to vote openly in favour of the act ‘lest they were marked down for the Pir’s future vengeance’.” The fear was not unfounded as soon after Ghazis killed the son of Hidayatullah, one of the tallest Sindh leaders in that Legislative Assembly, by derailing a train.
It did not take much time and within weeks Martial Law was declared. The British had to open a war front at the time of World War II. Sarah writes, “The area north of Sanghar and the Thar desert (Rajasthan) were thoroughly reconnoitered from the air; paratroopers and bombs were used against bands of armed men. Hur villages were raided, wells stopped up and their cattle herded into other districts.” On the other hand, the Pir was being tortured to ask his followers to put down their weapons.
Did the nationalists concede defeat? No. The Pir of Pagaro, Sibghatullah, embraced martyrdom at the gallows on 20 March 1943, after a sham of a court trial. Hurs kept fighting the British till 1946 even after their Pir was gone.

After the Second World War, soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) were captured by the British forces. They were charged with treason and tried by tribunals as war criminals. Indians protested against this treatment given to the freedom fighters of Azad Hind Fauj.
In February, 1945, soldiers and officers of the Royal Indian Navy mutinied in Mumbai and Karachi. English officials including the Viceroy took this mutiny as a sign of leaving India. The British forces killed many to quell the mutiny, many of which were Muslims.
Here, we are sharing names of the few Muslims we know, who attained martyrdom for taking part in the mutiny or supporting it.

Militants hurled a grenade at a patrol party near Nishat Park in the district in north Kashmir on the evening of February 11, causing splinter injuries to five security forces personnel
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sihna has strongly condemned the Bandipora terror attack on February 12, which led to the death of one policeman and injuries to four others.
In a late night tweet, the Lieutenant Governor said, “Strongly condemn the heinous terror attack on our security personnel. I salute the bravery of martyr of J&K Police SPO Zubair Ahmad Shah. We will not forget. Each drop of tears will be avenged”.
Mr. Sinha expressed deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing the injured speedy recovery.

“Today at about 2015hrs Srinagar Police received information about a terror crime incident at S.D Colony Batamaloo area of Srinagar. Senior police officers reached the terror crime spot,” police said in a statement.
A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable was shot dead by suspected militants in Srinagar on Sunday night – the latest in a string of terror-related killings in the Valley despite high security alert.
Police said militants fired at 29-year-old Tawseef Ahmad Wani at SD Colony in Batamaloo neighbourhood of Srinagar. He was immediately taken to the nearby SMHS hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists fired upon one police personnel… In this terror incident, he (Wani) had sustained grievous bullet injuries and was shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.”
The National Conference the attack. “Unequivocally condemn the cowardly & dastardly attack on 29-year-old policeman in Batmaloo, Srinagar in which he lost his life… Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time of grief,” the party tweeted.
The incident comes close on the heels of a series of attacks against civilians in the Valley. In October, at least 12 civilians, mostly migrant workers and those from the minority community, were killed in multiple militant attacks in Kashmir.

Suspected militants killed a policeman, his wife and daughter in Pulwama’s Awantipora area on Sunday night.
The police said militants barged into the house of Special Police Officer (SPO) Fayaz Ahmad at Hariparigam area of Awantipora and opened indiscriminate fire on Sunday night.
“In the firing, Ahmad along with his wife, Raja Bano, and daughter, Rafia Jan, received bullet wounds. Later, the couple succumbed to their injuries in the hospital,” the police said.
Jan, 24, also succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning in a Srinagar hospital.
Earlier this month, militants killed two off-duty policemen in Srinagar in two separate attacks, including an inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department.
“I strongly condemn brutal terrorist attack on SPO Ahmad and his family at Awantipora. This is an act of cowardice and perpetrators of violence will be brought to justice very soon,” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said.
