Two JMI faculty members receive Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award

It is a matter of great pride for the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) that Dr. Abdul Naseeb Khan and Dr Khalid Javed of the university have been conferred with Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award (Rs.One Lakh and citation).  

Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar extended her heartiest congratulations to both the awardees.

Dr Abdul Naseeb Khan who is currently working as the Secretary to the Vice Chancellor, JMI has been given ‘Award for Translation’. He has to his credit translations of Ghalib’s Urdu poetry, Premchand’s stories, urdu novels, critical urdu writings and several modern urdu poets. He has also been a recipient of Delhi Urdu Academy award for translation in the year 2018. He holds PhD on translation of modern urdu poetry into english.

Dr Khalid Javed a Professor, Urdu Department, JMI received the award for Urdu Fiction. He has also been a recipient of Delhi Urdu Academy Award for Fiction in the year 2018. He has authored three very famous novels- ‘Maut Ki Kitab’, ‘Nematkhana’ and ‘Ek Khanjar Paani Me’. His story ‘Aakhri Dawat’ translated as ‘The Last Supper’ by Abdul Naseeb Khan is on the syllabus of Urdu in Princeton University, USA. His ‘Maut Ki Kitab’ has also been translated as the ‘Book of Death’ by Abdul Naseeb Khan.

Besides, Prof. Khalid Mahmood, a Retired Professor of the Dept. of Urdu, JMI  has also bagged a prize for his book ‘ Nuqush-e-Mani’ .

Foziya Rabab’s first collection of poems launched

Mazameen.com, one of the largest websites of Urdu after Rekhta.org, in collaboration with Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a programme to launch Foziya Rabab’s first collection of poems “Aankhon Ke Us Paar” at the auditorium of the University’s Engineering Department here on Friday, 3 November, 2017.

Speaking on this occasion former Chairman of National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Justice Suhail Ejaz Siddiqui likened the young poet from Ahmedabad with the famous poet Parveen Shakir (1952-1994) and extended his good wishes for her poetry to flourish in years to come. Renowned Urdu litterateur Gulzar Dehlvi maintained that Rabab was aware of the style of expression. “There is possibility of great creativity in her poetry,” said the nonagenarian poet.

Former Head of the Department of Urdu, JMI, Professor Khalid Mahmood appreciated the title Aankhon Ke Us Paar (Beyond the Horizons) in a philosophical note stating that the metaphor stood for wisdom and farsightedness.

He described the poem Mujhko to kuchh aur dikha hai aankhon ke us paar/Ek tilsam-e-hoshruba hai aankhon ke us paar as one of the finest poems of the collection.

Mahmood, who has also served as Vice Chairman of Delhi Urdu Academy, commended the feminine expression of emotions in her poetry stating that at times the changing mood in her narration took one by great surprise.

Urdu essayist and critic Kausar Mazhari said, “Foziya has tried to unfold women’s poetry which usually remains closed, but in so doing she has opened it a little more than required”. He called her a beautiful poet of romanticism with an amazing blend of simplicity and sincerity.

Head of the Department of Urdu, JMI, Prof Shehpar Rasool said, “The poet [Foziya] in Aankhon Ke Us Paar knows well what to say, when to say and how much to say”.

There is no feminism in Foziya’s poetry, rather it has an oriental household woman’s love for her man in which romanticism prevails because of the power of expression, remarked Dr Baran Farooqi.

About her own poetic journey Rabab said that her achievement was the result of the blessing of Allah and love of friends and well-wishers. “Playing around words is my profession; words which keep changing and which then take the shape of poetry.”

Words are the signs and symbols of life and carriers of truth and honesty, she added. She also read out some of her poems. Dr Adil Hayat presented a paper in which he termed Rabab’s poetry as the “poetry of love and separation”.

The book launch and discussion was followed by a mushaira in which over a dozen poets participated. These among others included Shehpar Rasool, Shakil Jamali, Tarannum Riyaz, Alok Shrivastav, Salim Saleem, Alina Itrat, Abdul Wahab Sukhan, Khalid Mubashshir, Kunwar Ranjit Singh, Poonam Yadav, Rehman Musawwir, Saurabh Shekhar, Tabish Mehdi, Urmila Madhav. Irfan Waheed and Khalid Saifullah Asari of mazameen.com also shared their views.

Moin Shadab beautifully compèred the mushaira whereas Dr Khalid Mubashshir moderated the book launch session.

A good number of literary persons including teachers and students from JMI and other institutions attended both the book release programme and the mushaira.

Remembering Talat Mahmood

In his quivering voice you could hear the rustle of silk and the muffled sound of a broken heart. Few singers could put the listener in a blue mood like Talat Mahmood, who passed away on May 9 exactly 10 years ago.
And thanks to a website created by his son Khalid that gets about 1,50,000 hits every week from Indians and Pakistanis all over the world – “and a few Israelis”, Khalid adds – his memory is fresh as ever.

“Talat saab came from Lucknow and his Urdu pronunciation was perfect. He could exactly reproduce a song the way a composer had conjured up in his mind. He was an original singer whose distinctive voice was near impossible to duplicate,” recalls masterclass music director Khayyam.

One of the veteran music composer’s memorable compositions – Shaam-e-gham ki kasam (film: Footpath) – was sung by Talat, also known as king of ghazals. Khayyam recalls that in that memorable song he had experimented with the orchestration by not using any rhythm instrument like tabla.

“We used a piano, guitar and solo vox, a basic version of the synthesizer used in those days. Recording the number took plenty of time. But Talat saab ke mathe pe shikan nahi aayee,” he says.

Senior lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri remembers a recording with the singer. The song was Zindagi kis mod pe laayi mujhe, from the film “Diwali ki Raat”. Snehal Bhatkar was the music director. Says Lyallpuri, “We had only two musicians at the rehearsal. They were playing the tabla and the sitar. But the producer liked his singing so much that he said, there is no need for any other instrument. We recorded the song with just those two instruments.”

Lyallpuri remembers Talat as an extremely soft spoken man. Which Khayyam affirms. “He was a perfect gentleman. With him there was no loose talk. He was always well-dressed: his shoes shining and his trousers perfectly creased.”

To honour his father’s memory, Khalid Mahmood set up a website, talatmahmood.net, just a few months after the singer’s death in 1998 at the age of 74. Apart from the huge number hits every day, he also gets about 200-300 emails every week.

“The choice for me was between doing a book and setting up a website. I settled for the latter because it is more accessible,” says Khalid.

Talat recorded his first track way back in 1941 and sang around 750 songs in 12 languages. He also acted in over a dozen movies such as “Dil-e-Nadaan”, “Lala Rukh” and “Ek Gaon Ki Kahani”.

Few know that the singer-actor aroused mass hysteria when he arrived in Trinidad in West Indies on a concert tour in 1968. Fans thronged the roads from the airport to the city. The local group, West Indies Steel Band, composed a Calypso track in his honour. They sang, “Talat Mahmood we are proud and glad, to have a personality like you here in Trinidad.”
Talat is long gone. But as long as the human heart knows how to fall in love and emerge with ache, his velvet voice will live on.

Talat Mahmood’s melodies to be re-introduced

Legendary singer Talat Mahmood’s songs will be re-introduced to listeners in Delhi on Sunday (November 12). The melodies would come alive once again in the capital at a college of Delhi University.

Students from four Delhi University colleges will come together to sing Talat’s songs. Each student will be judged by music experts.

The curator of this grand event, Sahar Zaman who is Talat Mahmood’s grand niece is making sure to re-introduce the singer’s old melodies to the youth of today.

This special singing competition in memory of the legend will take place from 11am to 2pm at Sri Aurobindo College, Shivalik, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi.

About Talat Mahmood

One of the most popular singers of the Indian film industry, known for his soft velvety voice Talat Mahmood was an Indian playback singer. He was a significant part of the Golden Era of the Indian music film industry and gave several memorable hits from the ‘40s – ‘60s. Known as the King of ghazals, he was the first to bring the genre of ghazals to mainstream music of the film industry. He tried his luck at acting, but later gave up for his career in singing. He has been a part of movies like Daak Babu, Waris, Ek Gaon ki Kahani and more.

A special series of singing competitions in the coming weeks will be organised by the team of “Talat Mahmood Today” at prominent Delhi University colleges and institutes in Delhi. The students will be singing old ghazals and filmi songs of Talat Mahmood. This is an ongoing competition stretched across 3 months up to January 2018. These will be judged by well known artists from the music industry. The winners will have a chance to share stage in the grand finale celebrations during the 3-day Jashn-e-Talat festival in February 2018. February 24th, 2018 is Talat Mahmood’s Birth Anniversary.
