Mubssina Mohammed, a 16-year-old from Lakshadweep, has won India a silver medal in the girls’ Long Jump event at the 4th Asian U18 Athletics Championships that began Thursday in Kuwait.
It is the first-ever Asian-level athletics medal won by an athlete from Lakshadweep.
Mubssina jumped 5.91m to finish second behind Uzbekistan’s Sharifa Davronova (6.06m) and ahead of Hong Kong’s Wai Yin Jia (5.81m).
Last month, the talented athlete from the Minicoy islands created history by winning Lakshadweep’s first-ever national-level medal in athletics.
She had clinched gold in Long Jump (5.90m) at the Youth National Championships held in Bhopal.
Mubssina is coached by Ahmed Jawad Hassan, who discovered her at a local sports festival.
India also clinched a pair of gold medals and a bronze on the opening day.
In boys’ shot put, Akash Yadav (19.37m) took gold while his teammate Siddharth Choudhary (19.00m) claimed silver.
In boys’ 1500m, Amit Chaudhry of India was placed first after clocking 4:04.59.

More than 60 motorcycle enthusiasts participated in the Hero Dirt Biking Challenge (HDBC) at Benjanapadavu near Mangaluru, held on September 24-25, 2022.
Hero MotoCorp introduced the Hero Dirt Biking Challenge (HDBC) to serve as a platform for aspiring riders and enthusiasts to showcase their talent.
More than 60 passionate motorcycle enthusiasts from Mangaluru, Goa, Mysuru, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga participated in the Hero Dirt Biking Challenge (HDBC) held on September 24 and 25 at Benjanapadavu near Mangaluru while five were selected for the next round.
Hero MotoCorp introduced the HDBC to serve as a platform for aspiring riders and enthusiasts to showcase their talent. The country’s best amateur off-road riders are chosen from 45 cities. Hero MotoCorp will be awarding a Hero Xpulse 200 4V motorcycle and sponsorship contracts worth ₹20 lakh to the winner and the two runners-up. State 3 of the event was held at Kodman Motopark in Benjanapadavu.
The HDBC event was hosted by Shoeb Khan from Mysuru, a certified FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) official and a professional rally racer.
The two-day action packed event included a variety of challenges that the riders had to face. Participants had to go through jumps, a sidewall, whoops and finally park at the stop box with the fastest time, said a release.
Five winners will participate in the next round to be held in Bengaluru. Asad Khan from Chikkamagaluru won the first place while Ishan Chandra from Mangaluru won the second, Samson from Mysuru came third, Suhail Ahmed from Mangaluru the fourth and Safwan Hussain from Mangaluru came in fifth position.
The top 100 chosen riders Nationwide will attend a 5-day regional boot camp following the preliminary rounds.
Ross Branch and Joachim Rodriguez, from the rally team of Hero Motosports, will work with the best competitors and offer their advice. The final event of the boot camp will be a race, and the winners will advance to the finals.
Kodman Motopark proprietor Christon D’souza said, “I was truly contented seeing the number of participants at Kodman. This is a great initiative taken by Hero MotoCorp to give opportunity to the motoenthusiasts.”
KodmanMotopark has an off-road track for bikes and 4 wheelers where motorsport enthusiasts can train and hone their off-roading skills.

Mumtaz Khan was India’s top scorer in the 2022 women’s junior hockey World Cup and at the FIH Hockey5s Lausanne.

Teenager Mumtaz Khan was named the FIH Rising Star of the Year 2021-22 in the women’s category, the international hockey federation (FIH) announced on Tuesday.
Mumtaz Khan scored eight goals, including a hat-trick against Malaysia in the group stages, as the Indian hockey team finished fourth in the 2022 women’s junior hockey World Cup in South Africa. She was India’s top scorer in the tournament and the third-highest scorer overall.
The 19-year-old Mumtaz was also the leading goal scorer for the Indian women’s hockey team that played in the FIH Hockey5s Lausanne 2022. She netted five goals in four games, including a hat-trick against hosts Switzerland.
“I cannot believe that I have won this award. It is the hard work of our entire team over the year that has paid off, and I dedicate the win to my team,” Mumtaz Khan said.
“I feel the award is a sign that the hard work that I have put over the past year on the training grounds has helped me improve a lot as a player. But this is just the beginning of my career. I wish to continue the learning process and will continue the hard work to improve upon my game.”
Mumtaz Khan won 32.9 points in the final standings for the FIH Rising Star of the Year award, edging out Belgium’s Charlotte Englebert, who finished with 29.9 points.
Mumtaz Khan is the third Indian woman to win the award after Lalremsiami in 2019 and Sharmila Devi in 2020-21. In the men’s category, Vivek Sagar Prasad has won the honour in both 2019 and 2020-21.
France’s Timothée Clément was named the FIH Rising Star of the Year 2021-22 in the men’s category.

Parvej Khan improved upon Bahadur Prasad’s 28-year-old record to win the men’s 1500m event in the athletics arena of the National Games at the IIT campus here on Friday.
Parvej clocked 3:40.89 to leave Bahadur’s 1994 mark of 3:43.57 behind.
In the absence of Abdulla Aboobacker, Praveen Chithravel stole the limelight by setting a new Games record and winning the men’s triple jump title. The Tamil Nadu jumper leaped to 16.68m to erase Ranjith Maheshwary’s 2015 mark of 16.66m.
“After the Commonwealth Games I was not training with full intensity. But I wanted to finish well here. The presence of Eldhose Paul and Aboobacker would have pushed me,” said Praveen.
Altogether six Games records were made on the opening day of the athletics events.

Adlers Lombard, a Keralites-run football club, will become the first of its kind to compete in an Italian soccer league on Sunday
They moved from Kerala to Italy for higher studies, work and seeking better lives. But for these soccer maniacs, there was no better life without football. Moving from a football-crazy State to a country where soccer is almost a religion, they took their game to a new level.
Come Sunday, Adlers Lombard, a Keralites-run football club in Italy, will begin its journey in the Italian football system by competing in the CSI (Centro Sportivo Italiano) Regione Bergamo, a lower-division football league competition consisting of 12 teams. The club formed in 2019 plays the 7-a-side football format. It is the first of its kind, with 15 Keralites among its 20-member roster, to play in an Italian league. The CSI Regione Bergamo season lasts 10 months.
“Before moving to Italy from Kerala, one thing we all liked doing most was playing football. We came to Italy from different parts of Kerala at different times. But football has brought us together. After launching Adlers Lombard (Eagles from Lombardy), the team initially participated in some local tournaments. In the last 12 months or so, we have won five tournaments organised by the Kerala European Football Federation in Italy and Germany. The victories prompted the team management to register the club with the CSI and participate in the league,” says club vice-captain Mohammed Naseef C.P. who hails from Malappuram and works as a teacher in Italy. According to him, Adlers Lombard is the first ‘Indian Club’ to compete in an Italian football league.
The team is captained by Muhammed Abir P.T., also from Malappuram. The rest of the Keralite players are from Thrissur, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and so on. Two other Indians and a couple of Italian players are part of the team.
The club has spent around €20,000 (approximately ₹15.84 lakhs) to prepare the team for competing in the league. They raised the money through sponsorships from several funders including an Italy-based automobile giant.
For Adlers Lombard, competing in CSI Regione Bergamo is just a start. “We are currently plying our trade in a lower division. But we are ambitious and have a long-term goal. Our aim is to play professional football in Italy in Serie D, Serie C, Serie B and Serie A and compete against top teams like Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan. We hope to recruit Indian players and provide them with a chance to play in the Italian league. It will help the growth of football in India,” says Smento Joseph, president, Adlers Lombard who hails from Angamaly in Kerala.

India’s Shubi Gupta and A Charvi emerged winners in the girls under-12 and under-8 sections respectively in the FIDE World Cadets Chess Championship .
Shubhi Gupta, who hails from Ghaziabad, scored 8.5 points from 11 rounds to claim the top prize in the under-12 event. In the girls under-8 section, Charvi finished first with 9.5 points from 11 rounds. Charvi was trailing Bodhana Sivanandan (England), who finished second for the last three rounds, but managed to catch and overtake her, thanks to a better tie-break score after both ended up with 9.5 points.
Samhita Pungavanam finished 10th with 7.5 points.
In the under-10 category, India’s Hanya Shah took the eighth spot with 7.5 points while compatriots Aadya Ranganath (7 points) and V Tirupurambika (7 points) finished 14th and 19th respectively.
In the open events, India’s Ethan Vaz scored eight points to take the sixth spot in the under-12 category while the next best was Arjun Adireddy (7 points) in 20th place. In the under-10 section, Vivaan Vishal Shah (8 points) settled for 9th place while France’s Lacan Rus David took the first prize scoring nine points.

Nilufar Ahmed, a 2nd-semester student of the Bachelor of Computer Application (CT&IS) programme at Assam down town University, scripted history when she emerged victorious with the Gold medal in the 60-65 kg category at the 44th National Arm-Wrestling Championship held in Jammu & Kashmir.
The Championship was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Arm Wrestling Association. It was held between August 18 – 22 at Ganderbal, J&K.
She also secured the “Champion of the Champions” title in the All-Women’s category at the same event and is, therefore, attained the undisputed No. 1position among all women players of all categories.
The Assam Women’s team was adjudged the best team at this event.
Earlier this year, she participated in the district-level and state-level Arm Wrestling Championships held in Bihdia and Nagaon respectively, where she bagged the Gold in both these events. These victories paved the way for her entry into the National Championships this year.
Before Nilufar ventured into arm wrestling, she was a proficient taekwondo player but had to withdraw due to some injuries. Her entry into the arm wrestling sport has been quite a recent phenomenon and it has been just a few months since she first started practicing the sport on a whim.
Her coach Mr. Debajit Sharma, who is a popular figure in the sport of arm wrestling introduced her to the sport of arm wrestling and trained her. With sheer hard work and a Never Say Die attitude, she has been able to conquer her fears and emerge victorious.
She is the daughter of Mustaque Ahmed and Safia Begum of Guwahati, who are very supportive of her sporting aspirations.
Nilufar is now preparing to achieve greater heights by practicing for forthcoming arm wrestling championships in the international arena.

Youth are the future of any sports and Oman Cricket (OC) is a firm believer in grooming the youngsters in the country.
With an aim to provide a strong foundation, Oman Cricket has roped in an energetic partner in Majees Technical Services (MTS).
Oman is all set to host the prestigious ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup (CWC) Division 2- Asia from September 29-October 7 and the partnership agreement between OC and MTS comes as a perfect boost for the national team.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the OC headquarters on Thursday, Ishrath Habibulla, MTS managing director, said, “It is a matter of great pride to join the Oman Cricket family. We are a young company and have been in service for past 15 years. So our focus and aim is to associate ourselves with a similar age-group bracket. The U19 cricket development perfectly matches our ambitions and we are happy to join the journey with Oman Cricket.”
Habibulla, who himself has been an active cricketer in domestic league during his young days, said ‘the remarkable growth of Oman Cricket has made all cricket fans proud’. “We have also fielded team in the Oman Cricket Premier Division last season and had a decent outing. Our love for the game is now further strengthened by our association with U19 cricket,” he said.
The MTS top official said that ‘the journey with Oman Cricket’ and supporting the youth [U19] is the way forward for his company.
Oman Cricket Chairman H E Pankaj Khimji termed the partnership ‘a positive development for the youth cricket’.
After signing the agreement in the presence of the OC board treasurer Alkesh Joshi, OC board member Kiran Asher and OC chief development officer Duleep Mendis, H E Khimji said, “U19 cricket is a very important stage in the development of the game and for the future of our national team. We have witnessed the talent of our U19 players who have grown into our national team stars. The likes of Jatinder Singh, Aqib Ilyas, Sufiyan Mahmood and Wasim Ali have proved their credentials.
“The support we will get for the U19 team from Majees will help us nurture more players in the future. We thank them for their partnership as our boys prepare for the ICC U19 Men’s CWC-Division 2 tournament in Oman later this month.”
H E Khimji said, “Oman cricket’s rise at the global stage is evident and in cricket parlance, we are now a recognised commodity. This has been a result of the success in hosting successfully the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier earlier this year. Our national team’s success at international level has got the corporates notice the value of supporting the game. We hope to give our partners the value in investing with us.”
On this occasion, Mendis said, “The U19 squad acts a feeder for the national team. To get a partner for the young team is an encouraging development that will go a long way in giving a boost to the youth cricket structure in the country.

Although known primarily for its food and culture, Hyderabad is fast emerging as a centre for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). All over the country, those looking to make their mark in the sport make the city their home as the Hyderabad MMA Gym on Kali Khabar Road in Chaderghat churns out well-rounded, technically sound fighters. The man responsible for this, Head Coach Shaik Khalid, creates fighters adept at grappling and striking.
Among his earlier students is India’s first gold medallist in the sport, Mahboob Khan. Originally from Gulbarga, Karnataka, he moved to Hyderabad with his family at the age of 10. To help make ends meet, he began working from a very young age at an onion shop in Madannapet. His work ethic improved even further as helped provide for his family.
But a chance visit to Shaik Khalid’s gym would change his life as Khalid recognized that Mahboob incorporated the same discipline from his previous jobs into his training.
Seeing this potential, Khalid asked Mahboob to quit his job and paid for his daily expenses. The result has been a gold medal on the international stage and more than 10 within the country’s domestic scene. He hopes to also make a professional debut soon. Delhi boxer Md Azahar was crowned the WBC India champion in the super featherweight division after registering a unanimous win over Dharamvir Singh.
The judges scored the fight 79-72, 76-75 and 79-72 in Azahar’s favour after 32 minutes of boxing on Sunday night.
The 25-year-old Azahar lost the first round on all three judges’ cards but went on to win the next seven rounds convincingly.
Azhar, proved to be the better technical fighter before a partisan crowd. He now has a record of five wins and as many losses with four knockouts to his name.
“I was comfortable, just sticking to doing what I do best,” Azahar said.
“The game plan was to hit and not get hit. I fought a good smart fight. He couldn’t hit me with any of his best shots.” Dharamvir, on the other hand, has a record of seven wins and four losses. His previous loss had come over three years ago before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Boxing Council-sanctioned fight night witnessed seven other fights.
In an exciting four round cruiserweight contest, Jaskaran Singh from Punjab won a points decision over debutante compatriot Harsamardeep Singh.
Middleweight Shiva won a close six round bout against Karanjeet Singh.
Shiva was making a comeback after two years and looked rusty in the early rounds. Karanjeet, despite his record of four losses, looked comfortable and even took the second and third rounds. But Shiva, hung on. The final scores were 58-56, 58-56, 58-56.
