Changwon (South Korea) :

Shahzar Rizvi on Tuesday clinched India’s first medal at the ongoing ISSF World Cup, winning a silver in the 10m air pistol event.

Rizvi, who had won the gold medal in his first appearance in the ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico in March, fell short by just 0.2 points this time. He bagged the silver medal in the intriguing contest, scoring 239.8.

Russia’s Artem Chernousov clinched the gold medal with a final score of 240 while the bronze went to Bulgaria’s Samuil Donkov who shot a total score of 217.1.

After Indian shooters drew a blank on the first two days, the onus was on Rizvi and Commonwealth Games medallists Jitu Rai and Om Prakash Mitharval to end the country’s medal drought.

Rizvi qualified for the final as the sixth best shooter with a score of 582.

However, it was disappointment for both Mitharval and Rai as both of them failed to make it to the final round.

While Mitharval finished 11th with a score of 581, Rai was further behind on the 38th spot with a disappointing score of 575.

Pune :

Shooting in his first ISSF World Cup,  Shahzar Rizvi showed nerves of steel as he clinched gold with a world record score in the men’s 10m air pistol event at ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Saturday.

Rizvi, 24, pipped Rio Games gold medallist Christian Reitz and teammate Jitu Rai for the yellow metal by scoring 242.3 in the final.

He broke Japanese legend Tomoyuki Matsuda’s record of 241.8, which was created in October last year.

Reitz finished second with a score of 239.7, while Rai secured bronze after scoring 219 in the final.

Another Indian, Om Prakash Mitharval, 23, who was also participating in his first senior World Cup, missed out on winning a medal after finishing fourth with a score of 198.4.

This is perhaps the first time that three Indians had entered the medal round of a World Cup.

With a score of 579, Rizvi was the top-scorer among the Indians and second in the top-eight qualifiers, while Rai was third with a score of 578. This is the first World Cup for Rizvi, and so is for Mitharval, who was fourth with a score of 576.

In the final, the Indians got off to good starts. After completion of 10 shots, Rizvi, with 99.4 points was second behind Brazil’s Julio Almeida (101.8), while Rai and Mitharval kept themselves in top-5.
Rizvi displayed confidence and it reflected in his performance as the Meerut boy shot only seven shots below 10. His best was 10.8, while his lowest shot was an 8.5.

Rai on the other hand was a little inconsistent. His 10 shots ranged between 9 to 9.9 that pulled him down in the ranking. Just before the 20th shot, the Army shooter was at risk of getting eliminated, but he saved himself by shooting 10.6 and 10.4 to finish 0.1 point ahead of Mitharval, who shot 10.7 and 9.2 to finish with 198.4 points.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 10m air rifle event, teenager Mehuli Ghosh, along with Apurvi Chandela  and Anjum Moudgil entered the final along with three Chinese shooters.

There was joy and excitement at the residence of 23-year-old Meerut boy Shahzar Rizvi, who won gold in the 10m air pistol event at the Commonwealth shooting championship in Australia on Wednesday. Indian shooters registered a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 10m air pistol with Rizvi, a resident of Meerut’s Chhota Mawana village, claiming gold ahead of Omkar Singh (silver) and Jitu Rai (bronze) at Brisbane.

In the women’s 10m air rifle event, India’s Pooja Ghatkar won gold with a score of 249.8 in the final, beating India compatriot Anjum Moudgil (248.7), who claimed silver. India won two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal at the championship in Australia on Wednesday.

Rizvi’s father Shamshaad Ahmed, a freight contractor at a private company in Meerut, said, “All of us at home are very happy for him. He has done the entire country proud. I still remember the day nine years ago when he told me how he wanted to train as a shooter. I did not have enough money to buy him a gun, but I told him to pursue his dream and he started practising by borrowing weapons from others. It was only in 2012 that he got a gun of his own.”

Shahzar completed his schooling from Jawahar Inter College in Meerut and started pursuing his dream. He went on to win a silver medal in the 58th National Shooting Championship Competition (NSCC), Pune in 2014 and then won a gold medal in the 59th NSCC, Delhi in 2015.

“His gold medal in Delhi helped him secure a place in Indian Air Force, where he works as a sergeant. After he got employed with IAF, his game improved further as he got access to better weapons. Later, he got a bronze medal in National Games 2015 and a gold medal in 9th Asian Airgun Championship in Iran,” said Ahmar Rizvi, Shahzar’s younger brother. Ahmar is also a shooter and has played till pre-nationals. A head injury had forced him to opt out for some time, but he is back now and aims for the nationals.

Shahzar’s mother Shahjahan Rizvi – a homemaker – says she is eagerly waiting for her son’s arrival. The gold medallist is going to tie the knot with a local girl on November 18. The family said his victory in Australia has doubled their excitement and happiness for his wedding.
