Udupi, KARNATAKA :

23-year-old Aamna Kausar, an MSc Medical Anatomy student at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Udupi has topped the university in the final year examinations.

Aamna, who is also the President of the district unit of the Girls Islamic Organization, scored 8.6 CGPA, the highest in this year’s examinations.

Daughter of Mohammad Iqbal, a businessman and Wajida Tabassum, a homemaker, the hijabi student wants to pursue a PhD in Human Anatomy.

She told The Cognate, “I am planning to do PhD next year on a topic related to human anatomy. Meanwhile, I will be working for a year.”

Aamna who has secured a job as a faculty to teach anatomy to medical students. However, she aims to get into the research field.

Notably, Aamna is a hijabi student from Udupi which was the hotbed of the hijab controversy a few months back.

“Being a hijab-wearing student in our university, I have seen difficult times during the controversy. I was actively participating in discourses surrounding the hijab row through GIO,” she said.

“The way hijabi students were treated in the district was really bad. But now, moments like these prove to them that education is the right of everyone and if students are given proper education, they will reach heights,” she added.

This breadman at Hyderabad’s Tolichowki is setting kindness goals

Hyderabad, TELANGANA :

Like many others, Iqbal too is going through hard times amid the pandemic-imposed lockdown.

In 2020, Abdullah Naan Mahal used to serve Nahari Sherwa too, but had to stop because of Covid-19 and consecutive lockdown.

Hyderabad :

We’ve heard of people donating money, distributing essentials and cooking for the needy during this pandemic. But here’s a breadman in Tolichowki who is helping the needy with his out-of-the-box initiative.

Mohammed Iqbal, who runs Abdullah Naan Mahal, does not want anyone to go hungry. So, he came up with Neki ki Roti (Bread of Goodness). Every morning, he places a basket outside his eatery for people to buy naan rotis and put them in it. “Anyone, rich or poor, can pick up the rotis from this basket. No one should go hungry,” he says.

Iqbal himself places at least 20 rotis a day in the basket. “By doing this, we are not helping people but God. It is God who is making us do this,” he believes. “Even those, who are not my regular customers, are now buying Neki ki Rotis to help the poor.”

Like many others, Iqbal too is going through hard times amid the pandemic-imposed lockdown. “As soon as I get back to being financially stable, I will start making Nahari Sherwa. The poor can have the rotis with it,” he says, adding that, “Nobody likes dry bread. Not even me. But what can we do in these difficult times?”

In 2020, Abdullah Naan Mahal used to serve Nahari Sherwa too, but had to stop because of Covid-19 and consecutive lockdown. However, Iqbal is hopeful that this difficult phase passes and the world becomes a better place again. He wants to continue his initiative for as long as he can. “People ride down to my shop to take these free rotis. We never question them because we do not know what they are going through,” he says.

That’s very thoughtful of him. Long live Neki ki Roti.

The death toll in Saturday’s fidayeen attack carried out by JeM terrorists on an Army camp in Jammu’s Sunjuwan climbed to six after three more soldiers were found dead, while the body of a slain Lance Naik’s father was recovered on Sunday.

Security forces also reportedly killed a fourth terrorist on Sunday, as Army Chief Bipin Rawat reviewed security with his top commanders in Jammu. On Saturday, two soldiers had been reported dead.

Ten soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel and a Major, have been wounded in the strike. A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team also reached Sunjwan on Sunday to take stock of the situation.

Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand, Defence Spokesperson at Jammu, said the bodies of one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), two jawans and a soldier’s father were recovered by Indian Army commandos from residential quarters. All of them were killed by the terrorists in initial stages of the attack on Saturday.

“So far, six fatal casualties have occurred. They include two JCOs, three jawans and one civilian dependent — all residents of Jammu and Kashmir. In addition, 10 people have been injured, of whom six are women and children. They include one pregnant lady. A 14-year-old boy with gunshot wounds in the head remains critical”, said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

The slain soldiers have been identified as Subaidar Madan Lal, Subaidar Mohommad Ashraf Mir, Havaldar Habibullah Qureshi, Naik Manzoor Ahmad and Lance Naik Mohammad Iqbal — all from the First Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI). The slain civilian has been identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Sheikh, the father of Lance Naik Iqbal.

The injured officers have been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Rohit Solanki and Major Avijit Singh — both from the Sixth Mahar Regiment.

The gunfight has ended, but Army troops are busy in combing operations to sanitise the area before formally calling it off. “Sanitisation and search operations are continuing”, said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

The Indian Army confirmed the death of only three fidayeens in the operation so far. “The third terrorist was also found wearing Army combat dress and was heavily armed, like the other two killed previously. Arms and ammunition have been recovered from them”, said Lieutenant Colonel Anand

Heavily armed fidayeens of Jaish-e-Mohammad’s Afzal Guru Squad (AGS), donning combat fatigues, had stormed the 36 Brigade Headquarters of the Army and took shelter in residential blocks meant for JCOs at Sunjuwan in the Jammu division on Saturday morning.

Most of the 150 houses were cleared and occupants moved to safer places. Special forces were also flown to Jammu to help flush out militants.

Rawat flew to Jammu on Saturday evening to take stock of the situation. He reviewed the security situation with his top commanders who briefed him about the operation.

Sources said the General was given a detailed briefing about the attack and the operation launched by the forces to flush out the militants.
