In a bid to bolster access to professional education for economically disadvantaged students, Bengaluru-based Danish Education Trust (R) awarded scholarships to 624 students pursuing professional education across Karnataka with a total scholarship amount of Rs. 1,60,00,000/- for the academic year 2023-24. The Trust selected students through an online application process at www.danishtrust.in.
The scholarship recipients are pursuing various professional courses, including Engineering, MBBS, Law, Journalism, Pharmacy, BUMS, BAMS, BHMS, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, and B.Ed, and are from economically underprivileged backgrounds.
Danish Educational Trust (R) was established in March 2006 by a group of concerned citizens led by philanthropist Mrs. Husna Sheriff, with the belief that education is the seed for development and progress. Since its inception, the Trust has continued its scholarship scheme for poor and needy students pursuing higher education.
Over the years, the Trust has sponsored the education of more than 4000 students, and this year’s scholarship program is another step in empowering young minds to achieve their educational dreams.
Expressing her pride in the trust’s achievements, Mrs. Husna Sheriff emphasized the importance of empowering young minds through education. “We firmly believe in providing a platform for students to thrive academically, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Rahil Habibulla-led team trounce Hong Kong, China by 100 runs in the final of ICC Men’s U19 CWC Asia Division 2 Qualifier in Bangkok.

A dominating performance by Oman boys was capped with a spectacular victory in the final of the ICC Men’s U19 Asia Division 2 Qualifier as they routed Hong Kong, China by 100 runs at the TERD Thai Cricket ground in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday.
Both Oman and Hong Kong, China, had already qualified for the ICC Men’s U19 Asia Division 1 ahead of the final. Tuesday’s victory for Rahil Habibulla-led Oman meant that the boys kept a clean slate in the tournament, winning a total of five games on the trot.

In the final, Oman’s Saumya Sampat stood out with his all-round performance as he missed a half-century (48 off 80 balls) in the team’s total of 249/5 in the allotted 50 overs.
Saumya then excelled with the ball as he picked up three wickets for 25 to be deservingly named the player of the final as Hong Kong, China, were restricted to 149/9.
Opting to bat first, Oman, coached by Syed Aamir Kaleem, rode on two century partnerships to set up a total to defend.

First, it was a 108-run second-wicket stand between Jeet Shah (50, 99 balls) and Saumya and then it was the unbroken 104-run sixth-wicket partnership between Nitish Nadendla (51 n.o., 35 balls) and Rohan Ramachandran (49 n.o., 53 balls) that saw Oman post a total of 249/5.
Both Rohan and Nitish took over the run-charge after the fall of Rahil in the 37th over and slammed more than 100 runs in the next 13 overs with ten boundaries and a six.
Harry Hodgson and Arya Panjwani claimed two wickets each for Hong Kong.
Chasing a tough target, Hong Kong stumbled early on as they were down to 17/2 in the fourth over. Two quick wickets by the tenth over had Hong Kong reeling at 45/4 with Saumya, Varshieth Dinesh, Puladith Ralalage and Prathiesh Ramesh among wickets.
Mathew Clayton fought a lone battle with a half-century (50) as Oman bowlers picked wickets at regular intervals to restrict their rivals to 149/9 in 50 overs.
Aarez Dar (28), Arya Panjwani (15), and Rishan Shah (18) were the only other batters to get to double digits.
Oman tried out as many as eight bowlers and seven of them were successful with Saumya taking three. Varshieth, Puladith, Arya Sampat, Prathiesh, Gaurav Dinesh and Rohan Ramachandran claimed a wicket apiece.
Earlier, Oman had topped Group B with three straight wins as they beat Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, China and Bhutan to make it to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Oman got the better of Malaysia before coming up with yet another stellar display to keep their winning streak.
Oman’s Nitish Nadendla was adjudged Player of the Tournament for scoring 164 runs in 5 innings.

Dr Aboobaker Siddique, coordinator of Mangaluru Byari study forum said that the study that is done on Byari language, literature, art and culture should touch the grassroot level. Then only it is possible to extend the work of Byari field.
Dr Siddique spoke after releasing ‘Byari: Nanu Kandanthe’ Kannada book authored by senior literatteur Haji T A Aliabba Jokatte at the Ravindra Kalabhavana of Mangaluru university campus on Friday.
Dr Siddique further said, “Many variations of literature have arrived in the Byari language. However, there is lack of grassroot level study. In this context the study bench will give more priority to field work. Let the book of experiences of Aliabba be a model book for research students.”
B A Mohammed Hanif, former president of Byari academy presided over the function. The programme was inaugurated by retired principal of Badriya college Dr Ismail N. Aliabba Jokatte, author of the book shared his experience with regards to the writing of the book. Journalist Hamza Malar gave introduction of the book.
Students Mohammed Swadik, Ayisha Zahima, Mohammed Simak and Nausheena presented their thoughts on Byari language, literature and culture.
Guests Dr Anusooya Rai, principal of University college, Basheer Baikampady, editor of Byari Varthe, Khalid Ujire, president All India Byari Parishad, Ashiruddin Sarthabail, president Melthene and R Manohar Kamath, registrar of Byari academy spoke on the occasion.

The annual meeting of the Jamiatul Falah National Regional Coordination Committee, Saudi Arabia, was held at the Red Pot Restaurant in the city on Friday, February 23.
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District delegates of Jamiatul Falah as well as delegates from Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam and Jubail attended the annual meeting.
Dammam Unit President JF Shareef Karkala, JFCC President Shahul Hameed KK and Ameer Mansoor were present in the meeting.
The delegates unanimously elected Mansur Ali Ahmed as the “Ameer” for the year 2024-25.
The meeting, which was moderated by Siraj, concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by lunch.

Dr Syed Althaf, professor and head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, has been appointed as Director of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology.
The government order was issued by Mohammed Mohsin, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department, following a report by the investigating committee headed by Arundhathi Chandrashekar, Commissioner, Department of Treasuries.
The report highlighted that the institute, under Dr Lokesh, misused funds, provided low-quality treatment to patients at much higher costs, lacked necessary medicine stocks, violated the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act in tender procurements, and committed corruption, among other things.

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai played a major role in donating 20 acres of the campus land and Rs.100,000 for the radiotherapy machine. It was founded on 26 June 1973. The Government of Karnataka, by an order on 27 December 1979, converted the institute into an autonomous institution.
Rafi Ahmed Kidwai (18 February 1894-24 October 1954) was a politician, an Indian independence activist and a socialist. Kidwai served as a Minister of Communications in the first Cabinet of Independent India.

The inauguration of the new college building for the Nursing College at Deralkatte, part of the ‘Mangalore Group of Institutions’ under the Ullal Charitable Trust, took place on Friday.
The inauguration ceremony was jointly led by the State Health and Family Welfare Minister and DK District In-charge Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, and Constituency MLA and State Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, UT Khader expressed satisfaction with the growth of the education and health sectors in the Deralkatte area. He referred to the new building of the Nursing College as a crown jewel by ‘Mangalore Group of Institutions’ run by the Ullal Charitable Trust to the growing reputation of Deralakatte. Khader urged the institute to introduce new courses that would invigorate and inspire students, emphasizing the importance of serving the community locally after obtaining medical education.
Dinesh Gundu Rao, the DK District In-charge Minister, stressed the need to introduce new courses to harness the youth resources in the country effectively. He suggested recognizing students’ skills from the outset and creating an environment conducive to their development. Gundu Rao highlighted the high demand for nursing graduates, both nationally and internationally, and encouraged nursing students to capitalize on these opportunities.
Dr. Sayyid Mohammed Khilar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of ‘Mangalore Group of Institutions,’ noted the organization’s significant milestone in healthcare. He emphasized the priority given to starting new courses in health and education to benefit the next generation and leverage evolving opportunities in the field.
The saw the participation of prominent figures such as Dr. Habeeb Rahman, Chairman and Medical Director of Unity Care and Health Service Pvt. Ltd., and UK Monu, Chairman of Kanachur Medical College. The ladies’ wing of Sahebaan Welfare Trust (SWT) hosted the inaugural session of the ‘Community Welfare Talks Series 2024’ at Senate Hall, Inland Ornate Complex, in the city on January 21, with Siraj Ahmed, Managing Director, Inland Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, inaugurating the event.
Ahmed, in his inaugural address, lauded the efforts of SWT at initiating the talk series for the benefit of the community members as well as the society at large.
Meraj Yousef, Executive Director, Inland Buiders, who spoke on the occasion, pledged his support towards community welfare activities of SWT.
Educationist and Motivational Speaker Obeida Shoukath, who was one of the speakers of the day, spoke on the challenges faced by students on campus and the remedial measures while the second speaker Dr. Mohammed Noorulla, Senior Unani Consultant at the District Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, explained on the occasion the history and benefits of AYUSH, the Indian Alternative Medicine system, and the services available at the Ayush Hospital in the city.
Syed Siraj Ahmed, Secretary of SWT, welcomed the gathering on behalf of the President, Afroze Assadi Saheb. The program was ably compered by Zaiba Khatib.
The Qirat was read by Fariha Fathima and Ayesha Shahnaz.
The event was conducted by the Ladies’ Youth Wing of the SWT under the leadership of Amreen Khatib, who was ably assisted by Aliya Imtiaz and Rifaa Sheikh, with the support extended by Ayaan Sheikh and Luqman Tonse.
