Saripilla Village (Mangaluru), KARNATAKA :

Masood Group of Institutions inaugurated its new campus building on Sunday at Saripalla village, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. The event was marked by the presence of several eminent dignitaries, with the Hon’ble Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, UT Khader Fareed, formally inaugurating the facility.

He lauded their commitment to creating opportunities for learning and empowering the younger generation.

Khader expressed his confidence that the Masood Group of Institutions would emerge as one of the premier educational establishments in the country, setting benchmarks for excellence in academics and overall development. He urged the students to take their studies seriously, emphasizing that education is the foundation for personal growth and societal advancement.

Highlighting the significance of such initiatives, Khader remarked that starting educational institutions is a form of true patriotism. He stated that by investing in education, the trust is not only nurturing young minds but also contributing to the upliftment and progress of the nation as a whole.

In his address, Riyaz Basha highlighted the growing demand for health sciences education in Karnataka, particularly in the post-COVID era. He noted that the pandemic underscored the critical importance of a robust healthcare system, leading to significant transformations in the state’s health sciences infrastructure. According to Basha, this evolution has positioned Karnataka as a hub for advanced medical education and healthcare services, attracting students and professionals alike.

He observed that India’s healthcare system is gradually transitioning towards a Western model, where the concept of teamwork in medicine is gaining prominence. Basha explained that unlike the traditional approach where the doctor was viewed as the sole authority, the emerging system emphasizes the collaborative efforts of an entire team of health sciences professionals. This shift, he pointed out, places greater responsibility and opportunities on allied health professionals, nurses, technicians, and administrators, making their roles indispensable in delivering holistic patient care.

Basha urged students to view education not merely as a means to attain degrees but as a tool for building strong character and moral values. He emphasized the importance of humility, stating that true education goes beyond academic achievements and is reflected in one’s behavior and attitude. He encouraged students to remain grounded, focus on continuous learning, and contribute positively to society, embodying the essence of education through their actions and interactions.

UT Iftikhar Ali, Chairman of the Karnataka State Allied and Healthcare Council, addressed the gathering with a special request to Riyaz Basha, urging him to consider designating Masood College as an examination center for Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). He emphasized that such a move would be a significant step forward for the institution, providing convenience to students and enhancing its standing within the academic community.

In addition, Ali took the opportunity to invite everyone present to participate in the inauguration of the Regional Centre of RGUHS in Mangalore, scheduled for January 17. He highlighted the importance of this event in strengthening the presence of RGUHS in the region and its commitment to advancing health sciences education. Ali also reaffirmed his support for Masood Group of Institutions, pledging to assist in every possible way to help the institution achieve its goals and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare sector.

He remarked that the facilities and infrastructure at Masood Group of Institutions are designed to create an atmosphere conducive to learning, growth, and overall development.

D’Souza commended the institution for its commitment to nurturing young minds by offering a supportive and stimulating environment that prepares them to meet the challenges of a competitive world. He expressed confidence that the campus would serve as a platform for students to not only excel academically but also to develop the skills and resilience needed to succeed in their chosen fields.

M. Sadulla, the short and tall personality of Kannada Literature

Mangaluru, KARNATAKA :

Mangaluru:

A phrase in Kannada “murthi chikkadaru keerti doddadu” meaning icon looks short but performance is enormous, goes well with M. Sadulla, a great personality of Islamic literature in Kannada.

One of the pioneers of the popular Kannada weekly Sanmarga published from 1978, Sadulla was its manager and publisher till he breathed his last on 22nd August 2022.

Around 5 feet tall, M. Sadulla was born in 1945 in the Kandak area of coastal city Mangalore. He was the third son of Abdul Jabbar Ibrahim and Mariyamma. He lost his father at a young age.

He had his primary education at Badriya Educational Institution and matriculation from Rosario Educational Institution with distinction.

Sadulla began his professional career as an Accountant. He was a student of Moulana Syed Yusuf, the Imam of Kachi Masjid in Bundar area. Under his guidance, he learnt Quranic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, Arabic, and Urdu.

In Kandaka area, his father Abdul Jabbar was popularly known as Ijjabaka; he was a great admirer of Syed Abul Ala Maududi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami. Ijjabaka was the first person to translate Fatiha, the first chapter of the Holy Quran from Urdu into Kannada. Sadulla resolved to follow in his father’s footsteps.

During that time, there was a noticeable lack of Islamic literature in Kannada. To fill this gap, Sadulla not only translated works from Urdu and Malayalam into simple Kannada but also contributed original articles. Unlike his peers, he did not take much interest in public debates or speeches. However, anyone met him personally was impressed with his simplicity, integrity and depth of knowledge in various fields.

He contributed significantly to the translation of the extensive Urdu commentary Tafhim-ul-Quran and Sahih Bukhari, and other hadith collections like Dari Deepa (Guiding Light). Two of his original works, Namaz Shafi’i Krama and Kannada Kaliyiri (Learn Kannada) are very popular and published multiple times. He translated around 30 works into Kannada. Dari Deepa, the hadith collection, has reached thousands of people, transforming many lives of Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Sadulla was known for his simplicity, discipline, minimal talk, and high productivity, always wearing a gentle smile. His special qualities included excellent office management, patience, courage, generosity, and keeping calm even under pressure. He never let anything bother him and always remained content with what he had.

Despite being a profound scholar of the Quran and Hadith, he used to attend the Quran and Hadith classes of other scholars seriously, listening attentively.

Sadulla was very meticulous about the Quranic knowledge. Even when he was unwell, he would listen carefully as family members read it, correcting their mistakes if any. He couldn’t tolerate even minor mistakes in Quran recitation or references, and was keen on immediate corrections.

He was like a ready reckoner of the Quran.  Anyone could call him to inquire about any issue related to the Quran, and he would promptly provide the answer, satisfactorily.

Wildlife photographer from Udupi Haarish Mohammed wins international photography award

Udupi, KARNATAKA :

Haarish during one of his jungle visits with his camera

Udupi:

Haarish Mohammed, a wildlife photographer from Udupi, now residing in Saudi Arabia, has won the international photography competition organized by 35 Awards in the Black and White category. This contest saw a remarkable participation of 465,000 photographs submitted by 111,253 photographers from 174 countries.

Reflecting on his journey, Haarish shared, “I’ve been fascinated with nature and forests since childhood. During my college years, trekking through the Western Ghats became a regular activity. In 2011, I moved to Saudi Arabia for a job, realizing that my connection to the forest could only be maintained through a career in the Forest Department, becoming a naturalist, or pursuing wildlife photography. I dedicated 1.5 years to learning the theory of photography before purchasing my first camera in 2013.

“The period from 2013 to 2017 was all about learning, and in 2017, I met a group of talented photographers in Saudi Arabia called Photomates, which I joined. With their support, I honed my skills. However, my job in Saudi Arabia limited my opportunities to explore the forests of Karnataka. After the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020, I decided to resign and return to India to start my own business. Since then, I’ve had many of my works featured and published on various platforms. I visited national parks like Nagarhole, Kabini, and Bhadra, photographing beautiful animals such as tigers, leopards, elephants, and many colorful birds.”

Haarish elaborated on the story behind his winning image: “It was taken during an evening safari in the lush forests of Kabini, Karnataka. We were waiting for a herd of elephants to cross our path to reach a water body. To our surprise, a single tusker emerged from the dark forest.”

Haarish’s photo that bagged first place in international photography competition organized by 35 Awards

Haarish’s achievements include being featured in BBC Earth, the international online magazine PawsTrails, and Nature In Focus.

He secured third place in the 2020, 2021, and 2023 photography competitions held by Pilikula Biological Park in Mangalore. His work was also accepted for the International Wildlife Photo Exhibition held by Alvas Virasat in 2023.

Additionally, he won a certificate of merit in the National Level Photography Contest conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in 2023. His most recent accolade is the first place in the 2023 international photography competition conducted by 35 Awards in the Black and White category.

“Wildlife photography is like a window into the world of animals. It helps us understand and appreciate them better by capturing their beauty and diversity. Moreover, wildlife photography raises awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitats. By showcasing the wonders of nature, it encourages us to take care of it. When we see how amazing animals are, we’re more likely to want to save them,” Haarish added.
