A Physics Project: Two 11th Graders Build Affordable Electric-Powered Car

Mohammad Sehab Beig and Muhammad Shaan Sheikh, two classmates from Shantadurga Higher Secondary School in Goa’s Bicholim town, were assigned a 20-mark physics assignment for 11th grade. The two youngsters, together with their friend Moun Mamlekar, a commerce student, worked for a month to develop an electric car powered by a lead acid battery.

The car gained attention when it was displayed at Delhi’s Ravindra Bhavan as part of ‘The Western India Science Fair Competition’. The electric car is powered by a lead acid battery rather than a lithium battery, which reduces its cost significantly.

From a Physics Project To Developing an EV

Sheikh and Beig had been friends since childhood and used to repair remote-controlled cars when they broke down, so when their physics teacher, Deviya Gaonkar, assigned them a physics project to build something innovative worth 20 points, the boys seized the opportunity to demonstrate their talent for building things.

“When our teacher assigned us the project and specified that we may design anything related to physics, our initial goal was to build an engine, but we later decided not to limit ourselves to just engines. So, taking a step forward, we decided to build an entire car,” Sheikh told Two Circles.

The motive for developing an electric car aligns with the growing demand for sustainable transportation options, as electric vehicles dramatically reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby addressing environmental concerns.

Mamlekar, whose family owns an automobile garage, assisted Sheikh and Beig with the technical aspects of the project. 

They showed the model to their teacher, Goankar, and after receiving a positive response, they began collecting the parts and materials required to build the car. 

Specifications of the Electric Car

After working tirelessly for a month, the duo completed the automobile, which includes a brushless DC motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and a 48-volt lead-acid battery system connected in series with four 12-volt batteries. Its standout feature is its strong load-bearing capacity, which can support up to one tonne of weight. 

Charging the vehicle is achieved by connecting it to a power source compatible with the lead-acid battery setup. While charging periods may be longer than with advanced lithium-ion batteries, the lead-acid configuration remains a practical option. In terms of speed, the automobile can reach a maximum of 60-70 kilometers per hour, demonstrating its ability to cover moderate distances efficiently, making it suitable for diverse urban and suburban commuting needs.

Hindrances Along the Way

Building the electric car was a difficult endeavour, and they faced discouragement from others. Gaonkar, their physics teacher, stated that many people discouraged them from building the car, but they persevered and completed it. 

The two spent over INR 70,000 on making the car, which they received from their parents and several well-wishers. 

They have also attempted to raise funds to upgrade their automobile to ones that can be auto-charged while in motion but have had little success. The project is only two alternators away from being self-sufficient in terms of charging.

‘Parents Have Always Been a Huge Support’

Sheikh’s mother is a chemist, and his father is a businessman; both are very supportive of their son’s project. 

Beig’s mother, Mubina Beig, who runs a pre-primary school in town, helped them in finding spare parts for the car. 

“My parents have always been a huge support when it comes to my inclination towards experimenting with things,” he stated.

A Career in Innovation

This is not the duo’s first innovative design. Sheikh created a small solar vehicle a few years ago, while Beig made a generator in fifth grade and a hydraulic crane in eighth grade.

Speaking about their goals, Beig stated that he wants to pursue a career in science and research to enhance his curiosity and innovative tendencies, whilst Sheikh is interested in a career that allows him to blend science and compassion to contribute to the well-being of others.

They intend to submit their design to vehicle manufacturers. “If a compelling proposition arises, we are open to collaboration,” Sheikh said.

Ahmed Ali, from Assam’s Karimganj district, is a true inspiration for many, especially those who are determined to make a positive difference in their communities. Despite facing financial challenges, the 87-year-old decided to take matters into his own hands and established schools in his village to provide education to underprivileged children.

By establishing nine schools with the money collected from driving an autorickshaw, Ali has helped bridge the gap between education and poverty in his community. He understands that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and breaking the cycle of poverty. His schools offer affordable education to students who would otherwise not have access to it.

He is a resident of Khilorband, a marginal village of Patharkandi in the Indian state of Assam, bordering Bangladesh. Ali started the first school in 1978 in his village Madhurband. He sold some of his land and donated a part of the land to the school, on which it was built. Out of his 36 bigha land, he donated 32 bigha land for the construction of the school. Funding of the school is also done from its deposits, daily earnings and donations.

His high School was set up in 1990. In addition to it, he also established three lower secondary schools, five secondary schools and one higher secondary school. He hopes to establish a college in the future.

Besides donating his own land for the schools’ construction, Ali also works hard to keep them running. He drives a rickshaw during the day to earn a living, and at night, he cuts wood to help maintain the school’s finances. His dedication and hard work have made a significant impact on the education of many children in his community.

Ahmed Ali’s work has not gone unnoticed. He was nominated for the News18 Rising India Real Heroes Award in the education category, and he will be conferred with the award at the News18 Rising India Summit at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on March 30.

His story has been shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ inspiring many others to take action in their own communities. Narendra Modi said, “I have come to know that a rickshaw puller named Ahmed Ali of Assam’s Karimganj district has opened nine schools for the education of poor children. It is a beautiful manifestation of the will of the people of our country.” Ali was also invited to Delhi as a speaker by an NGO Jookto.

Rashika Islam has topped the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE), 2022 conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC). The results of the CCE which were declared on Wednesday also saw 54 Muslim candidates crack the tough examination to become civil servants, police officials, and administrators in allied State services. Rashika Islam, daughter of Colonel (Retd) Saidul Islam and Raihana Islam, of Matiabag, Gauripur in Dhubr district, has secured the highest marks in the CCE exam conducted by the APSC. Rashika’s achievement has delighted the residents of Gaurpur and the entire Dhubri district.

“I am elated after seeing my name on the top of the APSC results. In 2020 I had cleared the final of the CCE. But my rank was low and I got the job of a Tax Inspector posted in Dhubri district. However, I was not happy and wanted to improve my rank in the APSC exam. Though it was tough to study for such a tough exam while serving the job of tax inspector, my husband and parents were supportive. I took no coaching in any institute to prepare for the CCE 2022. I prepare a lot for the exam by watching free YouTube channels and websites on success mantra in civil service examination,” Rashika Islam told Awaz-The Voice soon after the results were declared on Wednesday evening. 

Rashika Islam has been selected for the Assam Civil Service (ACS) category. When asked about study tips to crack the exam like CCE Rashika said there is no definite answer to such a question.

“There is no shortcut but to study hard for the exam. Despite my hectic schedule as the tax inspector I managed to study four to five hours a day before the CCE-2022,” Rashika said.

Raashika’s husband who is also a bureaucrat with the Assam Government had been very supportive of his wife’s success. Due to her father’s pan-India job, Rashika studied in different army schools in different parts of the country, including the Army Public School, Narengi, Guwahati.

Besides Rashika, 53 other Muslim students cracked the APSC exam and have made it to the civil police and allies services of the government of Assam.

The Muslim candidates selected for the Assam Civil Services are Rashika Islam, Wahiduz Zaman, Zamanur Islam, Asfaq Laskar, Benazir Ilyas, Abu Saeed Mohammad, Golzar Hussain, Affan Khan, and for the Assam Police Service: Fayez Ahmed, Rubina Begum, Arshad Wasim Ahmed and SK Sajidur Islam.

Shabnu Rahman and Shahjahan Ali have been selected as Superintendent of Taxes while Mohammad Abdul Wakil has been selected for the Assam Finance Services.

Others selected candidates are:

Block Development Officers: Mohsin Siddiqui, Zahid Hussain Hazarika Khorshida Khanam, and Antra Hussain.

Assistant Manager, District Industries Center: Farida Yasmin.

Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies: Pinaj Rahman. Tax Inspectors

Pakiza Begum and Javed Akhtar Laskar.

For Inspector of Excise posts Mohammad Tazim Ahmed, Imran Hussain, Sarnaz Mehboob. Sub Register, Mudrika Jhabiullah Hindi. Assistant Audit Officers Shabiha Shabnam, Tanveer, Parvez, Hamidur Rahman, Salim Majid, Anjum Parbin, and Jahangir Alam Barbhuiya have been selected.

For Assistant Account Officers posts Philorina Begum, Tanveer Amin, Wasim Ahmed, Syeda Tamanna Yasmin, Manin Uddin Ahmed, Nekib Zaman Ahmed, Zaffrin Rahman, Firdaus Rahman, Jackie Ahmed, Rauchna Parbin Akand, Mirza Kausar Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman, Abdul Ullah Ahmed, Khandkar They are Khairul Islam, Shabana Rakia Ahmed, Mohammad Ali and Abu Bakar Siddique have been selected.

Ahmed Faraz will be a Research Assistant in the Transport Service Department. For Assam Urban Administrative Service Azharul Alam, Asif Ali Khan, Baitul Alam Rahman, and Ajmal Hussain have been selected.

So far, 68 Muslim candidates have cracked the CCE conducted by the APSC between 2013-18.  This year, 54 Muslim candidates cracking the same exam in a single year is considered a very encouraging and positive development for the minority community in Assam. 

The number of Muslim candidates selected for ACS and Allied Services would be more in the future provided quality education spreads among them,” eminent surgeon and Padmashri Dr Illias Ali said.

Prestige International School’s Safin Mustafa enters Noble Book of World Records

Safin Mustafa from Mangaluru made an entry into the Noble Book of World Records for floating on water for 2 hours 30 minutes and 13 seconds, on Saturday January 13.

The previous best was by Karanam Snehit Simha of Andhra Pradesh in 2023, who clocked 2 hours 21 minutes 53 seconds.

The record breaking event was held at the swimming pool of Prestige International School, Jeppinamogaru here in the wee hours of Saturday. The 14 year old Safin is class 8 student of Prestige International School, one of the reputed educational institutions in the city.

Displaying the clock to the reporters, Safin said that he was coached by Aromal A S. He also thanked the teachers and the management of Prestige International School for their support and guidance in making the achievement.

Speaking to media, coach Aromal said, “Unexpectedly, I discovered swimming talent in Safin. During the learning phase, he demonstrated remarkable proficiency, comfortably swimming for 15-30 minutes. Inspired, I extended his training hours, and today he has set a world record. I am thrilled by his performance and incredibly proud of him.”

Expressing his joy over Safin’s world record, Haider Ali, chairman, Prestige International School said, “The management, staff and students of our school are proud of Safin Mustafa. He is the icon for us all. Our institution always supports and encourages the students to exhibit and to be experts in their talents. Along with academics, the generation should enjoy their age and climb heights in their fields of interest.”

Despite the dearth of quality educational institutions in Govandi, Khan Sadia Kawsar’s journey stands out as an inspiration. A local official highlighted the prevalent issues, noting that the area often makes headlines for crime-related incidents, with little attention from politicians or concrete initiatives from religious leaders to address the root causes. The suggestion to uplift Govandi’s image centers around establishing better educational institutions and providing improved training for the younger generation.

Khan Sadia Kawsar, a second-year MBBS student, is the daughter of Hafiz Alauddin Sahib, a respected figure in the community and a dedicated honey trader. Despite the challenges, Hafiz Alauddin spared no effort in providing religious education to his children. An accomplished computer engineer himself, he played a pivotal role in guiding Sadia towards her academic pursuits.

Sadia’s academic prowess became evident early on, consistently scoring high marks in school. Her remarkable achievement of securing 98.5% in the twelfth examination from the Govt.Jr.College in B. Kothakota, Andhra Pradesh, paved the way for her current pursuit of a medical degree at the Fathima Institute of Medical Sciences in Kadapa.

Khan Sadia Kawsar’s journey symbolises the triumph of determination and hard work. Her success challenges societal stereotypes, proving that with determination, even the daughter of a humble businessman can achieve great heights. Hafiz Alauddin Khan, reflecting on the challenges he faced to support his children’s education, emphasised the importance of unwavering faith in God and the merit of one’s children.

Originally from Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, Hafiz Alauddin Khan is not only a devoted father but also a prominent scholar and supporter of religious institutions. Shahina Khanam to get gold medal at RU convocation ceremony

Shahina Khanam, a resident of Hesla on Ramgarh-Argadda road, will be awarded a gold medal for being a topper for four years in BDS. 

The medal will be awarded by Governor CP Radhakrishnan at the convocation ceremony of Ranchi University on May 2.

Topper Shahina Khanam is the sister of Rinkle Khan, the town vice president of AJSU.  The family members are very happy with the news of getting the gold medal and there is an atmosphere of happiness in their house.

AJSU Nagar Vice President Rinkle Khan said that earlier education was neglected in Muslim society.  But now the Muslim society is also rapidly increasing its step towards education.

Prof. Qudsia Tahseen, Department of Zoology at Aligarh Muslim University has been named as the National Committee representative for the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), announced by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).

Commencing her three-year term on January 1 this appointment emphasizes Prof. Qudsia’s contributions to the fields of Taxonomy and Biodiversity. She has the distinction of holding fellowships in all three prestigious National Academies.

The IUBS, founded in 1919, is a global non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating and coordinating biological research worldwide. Its mission spans diverse areas, with the goal of addressing global biological challenges. Prof. Qudsia’s appointment to the newly formed INSA National Committee for IUBS, consisting of seven experts, solidifies her role as a representative for India in the realm of biological sciences.

Prof. Qudsia while acknowledging her appointment said the committee, serving as the national arm of IUBS, is pivotal in advancing IUBS initiatives at a domestic level. This includes policy advocacy, tackling global challenges, setting research priorities, fostering collaborations, and promoting the sustainable use of biological resources.

Ajmal Super 40 Shines Again in NEET, 2023

Being a medical doctor has always been a well cherished dream and a coveted profession, as it provides opportunity to save human lives. This public zeal towards the field of medicine gave rise to a number of academic institutions. Sensing the demand from students and parents, corporate sector also stepped in to provide courses for preparation of the NEET exam, as it proved to be a hugely profitable business for them. But this trend restricted the children of poor families from dreaming to become a doctor. However, some non-profitable institutions are rendering remarkable services to the nation by providing NEET coaching free or at a very low cost, like Ajmal Super-40 run by Ajmal Foundation.

Ajmal Foundation has been running this program for the last three years and its results have remarkably been improving by each year. The number of qualifying students of Ajmal Foundation in NEET exam last year was 245 which has this year increased up to 350.

This is indeed a huge gain for the Foundation, while a great hope for the underprivileged section of the society. Other institutions running on the same pattern are Shaheen of Bidar, Al-Ameen of Kolkata and Rahmani-30 of Patna.

The results for NEET 2023 were finally announced on June 13th this year. Just like every previous years, it was finely a nerve-wracking time for all the aspiring medical students who gave their best to crack this competitive exam. Among over 20 lakh applicants from across the country, half of the candidates could be declared as qualified but due to the seats limitations in the medical colleges, all passed candidates may not be the doctors they dreamed about.

The giant coaching institutions are busy celebrating the success of their toppers. But success of the non-profitable institutions should be celebrated and appreciated by common masses. Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, CEO Ajmal CSR and the philanthropic endeavours of Ajmal family, especially in the northeast of India, are laudable.

A college professor from the J&K’s Higher Education Department (JK-HED) has published a book with the Indian branch of the reputed publishing company, Oxford University Press.

The book, authored by Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray, highlights an emerging discourse in the Islamic political thought, “Islam and Democracy in the 21 st Century”.

Dr. Parray, an Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies in the JK-HED since 2016, is presently posted at GDC Sogam, Kupwara, and hails from south Kashmir’s Tral, Pulwama.

His major areas of specialization are Islamic political thought, Islam and modernity, Islamic intellectual tradition and Quranic studies.

Spanning over 400-pages, the book offers very “useful discussions in framing the contemporary debates surrounding Islam and democracy”, by treading through “diverse theoretical Islamic texts like the Qur’an, Sunnah and other more contemporary works by eminent scholars” and analysts and activists of the Arab world, sub-continent and the Muslims scholars of the West of the last two-and-half-centuries. It consists of seven chapters and discusses democracy and democratization in the Muslim world, democratic notions in Islam, Islam-democracy discourse (from mid-19 th to 21 st centuries) in the light of both proponents and opponents. It addresses the crucial question: Is Islam compatible with democracy?

The book was announced officially by OUP on 13th September and is currently available on OUP website, Amazon and other online portals (Publisher’s Link; Amazon Link) by publishing this book, Dr Tauseef, in his late 30s, has become one of the youngest academicians of J&K to be published by OUP and thus is a feat attained by a college Professor. It is “a huge accomplishment at such a young age”, said a professor.

The book has endorsements and praise from internationally acclaimed eminent scholars and specialists of Islamic Studies and Islamic political thought from the USA (Professor Asma Afsarudin), Australia (Professor Abdullah Saeed), Qatar (Professor Louay Safi) and Bosnia (Dr. Joseph J. Kaminski).

Furthermore, it has a foreword by Dr. M. A. Muqtedar Khan (an Indian-American Professor and expert on Islam and global affairs at the University of Delaware, USA), who has described it as being “central to Islam and democracy, and any future research on the topic can and should begin with this book”.

The book is a helpful source for the students and scholars of comparative politics and islamic studies, and is equally fascinating for the readers interested in knowing the contemporary political dynamics of the Muslim world.
