A Muslim freedom fighter who was dead against partition

UTTAR PRADESH :

Those who supported partition sought the then Hyderabad PM’s intervention to stop funds to Darul Uloom in UP

An image of the complaint sent to Sir Akbar Hydari against Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madani; and other connected documents preserved at the Telangana State Archives and Research Institute.

It was the time when Hindus and Muslims joined hands to fight for India’s freedom, and Darul Uloom at Deoband in Uttar Pradesh and scholars of the Islamic seminary played a vital role.

So much so that those who opposed the strong anti-partition stand of celebrated freedom fighter Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madani, who taught hadith (tradition of Prophet Muhammad) at the institution, termed it ‘anti-Muslim’, and even sought a rescinding of a grant to the seminary from the State of Hyderabad.

Documents preserved at the Telangana State Archives and Research Institute reveal that on August 22, 1938, one G.H. Siddiqui from Bijnore had complained to Prime Minister of Hyderabad, Sir Akbar Hydari, saying that Maulana Madani had unfurled a Tricolour atop his allotted quarters. He then proceeded to describe the seminary as an ‘institution which has now become a political centre of anti-Muslim religious propaganda and is now, no more an institution to give pure Islamic education’. He then sought to know whether it would be possible to briefly stop the annual grant to teach a ‘lesson’ to the staff.

Sir Hydari’s handwritten note, polite in tone and tenor, found its way to the Vice Chancellor of the seminary, Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Usmani, another celebrated Islamic scholar, to know whether this was true, even as he requested him to investigate the matter.

In his response, Maulana Usmani said that not only was the incident true, but the small flag that was once atop the quarters was replaced by a much larger one. The maulana, whose political leanings were diametrically opposed to those of Maulana Madani, supported the creation of Pakistan and eventually moved there. He had pointed out that the incident had happened in his absence. While Maulana Madani’s office had responded to inquiries, he himself had not.

The letter shows that there was not much that Maulana Usmani could do. In the letter he writes, “Esteemed sir, you may remember that as I have previously informed you that 10 or 11 years ago, when my predecessors appointed the maulana as principal of the institution, they had accepted all his conditions, that his political activities and leanings would not be restricted.”

Academic and author Shamsul Islam, in his book “Muslims Against the Partition of India”, writes that Maulana Madani, who was fiercely against partition, was famous for saying in 1937, nearly a year before the incident as mentioned in the letter to Sir Hydari, that ‘nations are based on homelands, not religion’.

Speaking to The Hindu , noted cleric and president of Jamiat-e-Ulama Hind (Arshad Madani group) Maulana Arshad Madani, who is the freedom fighter’s son, opined that the staunch opposition to partition was a result of foresight, and conviction in peaceful coexistence of communities.

“He was of the strong opinion that partition would not auger well for Muslims in India and Hindus in Pakistan. He believed that for 1,300 years, both communities lived next to each other without problems. We saw what happened after partition. He was imprisoned for a total of nine years, including in Sabarmati jail, and in Matla,” he said.

Maulana Gulzar Azmi: A true liberator of Muslim youths implicated in false cases

Mumbai, MAHARASHTRA :

Maulana Gulzar Ahmed Azmi, a staunch fighter for the oppressed people, especially innocent Muslim youth, implicated in false terror and criminal cases, and a prominent figure of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Maharashtra passed away in a hospital in Mumbai on August 20. He was 89. He was receiving treatment in hospital, but succumbed to his head injury after a slip-and-fall incident.

Heading a legal aid committee of the Jamiat-i-Ulama Maharashtra since its inception in 2007, Maulana Azmi was fearlessly offering legal aid to the people implicated in false cases by government agencies and the police.

Maulana Azmi was born in Mumbai on May 1, 1934. After getting primary education at a Urdu medium school, he went to Darul Uloom Deoband to complete higher education in Islamic studies. After joining Jamiat in 1954, Azmi held key positions from the local head to the state’s vice president.  His journey in the quest for justice and civil rights started in the aftermath of the Bhiwandi and Jalgaon riots in 1970, when hundreds of Muslims were arrested, in spite of suffering heavy losses during the violence. The Jamiat came forward for the first time to get them released.

After 1992-1993 Mumbai riots, Maulana Azmi assisted the Srikrishna Commission, set up by the Government of Maharashtra to investigate the causes of the riots. Remarkably, the Commission in its findings, praised Jamiat-i-Ulama for helping it in collecting key evidence. Even Maulana Azmi himself translated the inquiry report into Urdu. Due to his resilient support, Jamiat has extended legal help to hundreds of accused in a number of cases, running across the country.

Maulana Azmi never cowed down the allegations or threats to his life while defending civil right cases. When asked about an imminent threat in defending the terror accused, he bravely replied that he did not fear for his life as he firmly believed that the time and place of his death were already decided.  He was very active and remained involved in his routine legal aid activities even at the age of 90.

Azmi has been a member of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission from 2002-2005, and again in 2014. He is survived by six sons and three daughters. Expressing deep grief over his death, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani said Gulzar Azmi was associated with Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani and Jamiat at a very young age and spent his entire life serving the country and the community.

Arshad Madani’s Jamiat starts ‘Madani-100’ free coaching centre

NEW DELHI :

Maulana Arshad Madani

New Delhi :

Arshad Madani, President of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, inaugurated a free coaching centre called “Madani-100” for financially weak students in New Delhi on Monday and in which non-Muslim students can get admission too.

Madani said that the purpose of setting up this centre is to prepare intelligent but financially weak students for competitive examinations. For this 10th, 11th and 12th pass students will be selected through a test. This test will be Admission Cum Scholarship, and the students who will be selected will be given scholarship up to 100% and free coaching for competitive exams like IIT, GEE and NET.

Madani clarified that Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind does its work on the basis of humanity irrespective of religion, caste and creed. “Therefore, in keeping with its tradition, coaching will also be provided to non-Muslim students who are financially weak but talented.” he said.

He added that Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind has never opposed secular or modern education. However, from the beginning it has been believing that the children of the nation who want to get education must have religious education so that they can understand what Islam is and what its teachings are.

He added that there is no future for the traditional way of education, and our children who are getting education will lag far behind the children of other nations if they are not prepared for competitive examinations by encouraging their natural abilities.

He said that the kind of religious and ideological confrontation that has now started in our homeland cannot be countered by any other weapon except education, so it is the collective responsibility of all of us to equip our new generation with basic religious and modern higher education so that they, with their intelligence and ability, can reach the milestones of success and prosperity.

Madani said the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind is working successfully on all fronts. It is setting up schools and madrassas on the one hand, and on the other hand it has now started emphasizing on education that can serve the country and the nation at every level. This means technical and competitive education. The launch of the free coaching centre is a major initiative in this direction. He said that if this initiative is successful, then our long-standing desire is to set up a coaching centre for the civil services.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind has been providing scholarships to poor students selected on the basis of merit since 2012. This year, scholarships have been provided to 656 students, including Hindu students.

The amount of scholarship has also been increased from Rs 5 million to Rs 10 million since this year. It is planned to increase this amount further in the coming years. -IANS
