Former student of Jamia Millia Islamia, Muhammad Adnan, who has been working with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) since 2008, has played an important role in the historic mission of Chandrayaan-3.
Adnan Sardast is working as Scientist (F) in Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) of ISRO.
Adnan has also been involved in the prestigious Chandrayaan-2 and Mars Mission (MOM) teams.
Adnan who hails from the Darbhanga city of Bihar did his Bachelor in Engineering in Computer Science from Jamia Millia Islamia in 2007.
Jamia Millia Islamia’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar said, “I am extremely happy that our students are doing so well in this particular field. This has doubled our happiness. I congratulate Adnan for the role he has played in the mission. This will surely inspire our students to strive for nation building.”
It may be mentioned that three other former students of the university, Amit Kumar Bharadwaj, Mohammad Kashif and Areeb Ahmed were also part of ISRO’s historic Chandrayaan-3 mission.

Dr Rakhshanda Roohi Mehdi, prominent fiction writer and a teacher of Syed Abid Hussain Senior Secondary School, Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi has bagged the prestigious Hamid Saeed Khan Award of Madhya Pradesh Urdu Academy for her Urdu short story collection titled “Monsoon Store” and will receive Rs.51,000/- as award money.
This award recognizes the efforts of progressive women and the exceptional achievements of women who have broken barriers and demonstrated outstanding skills in their respective fields.
JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar congratulated Dr Rakshanda Roohi for her great achievements and wished her good luck for her future endeavours.
Dr. Rakhshanda said, “I am deeply honored and grateful to have been selected for this award. I am passionate about my writing and this award truly reflects what I believe in – a woman’s courage and her strong role in improving lives. I am committed to continue my efforts and empower women in the society”.
Apart from “Monsoon Store”, Rakhshanda has also penned another Urdu short story collection “Magar aik shaakh e nihaal e gham”. She has also written “Aik khwab jaagti ankhon ka”, a Hindi short story collection and one Book on Sufism named “Alakhdas.”
She has also translated two novels namely “Aakhri Swariyan” and a Pakistani novel titled “Naulakhi Kothi” in Hindi from Urdu.
Earlier, DD Urdu has broadcasted a tele film “Chilman k paar” which was based on her story named “Bahut sambhala wafa ka paiman magar…”.
A play “Kahan hai Manzil e Raah e tamanna” on her story has been staged in Ram Lal Bhawan New Delhi.
In addition to this, she has authored many articles which have been published in renowned magazines and newspapers. She is a regular participant of talk shows and story narrations of All India Radio and DD Urdu.
She has been honored with many other awards for her literary work.

The researchers will receive a fellowship of Rs 70,000 for the first two years, Rs 75,000 for 3rd, and Rs 80,000 for the fourth and fifth years
Twelve research scholars from Jamia Millia Islamia University have been selected for the Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) Award under the lateral entry scheme of the May 2022 drive, the university announced on Wednesday.
Last year 6 researchers of the university were awarded the prestigious fellowship under the December 2020 drive but this year the number of recipients just doubled. The winners of this year are:

I hope that it would inspire other students, particularly girl students of the university to do well in science and engineering research.”
PMRF Coordinator, Prof. Abdul Quaiyum Ansari said that these researchers will receive a fellowship of Rs 70, 000 for the first two years, Rs 75,000 for 3rd, and Rs 80,000 for the fourth and fifth years. Along with this, each fellow will get a research grant of Rs 2 lakh per year (a total of Rs 10 lakh for five years) under the PMRF.

First woman vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Najma Akhtar has been selected for the Padma Shri award.

First woman vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Najma Akhtar has been selected for the Padma Shri award. Akhtar will be one of the 28 Indians, who will be conferred with the award in the field of literature and education by President Ram Nath Kovind, at a ceremonial function, which is held at Rashtrapati Bhawan every year.
Akhtar (67) who was appointed as Jamia Vice Chancellor (VC) in April 2019, scored a historic double – not only was she the first woman to hold the post, but she was also the first woman to head any central varsity in the national capital.
She has previously served as the VC of University of Kashmir and headed the department of Educational Administration at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) for 15 years. Akhtar said that she is grateful that her work was recognised and thanked both the PM and the President.
“I will accept this award just not for myself, but on behalf of my colleagues. Everyone works hard, but not everyone’s work reaches the recognition they may deserve. I thank the PM and the President for recognising my work, especially, the President, who entrusted me as the first woman VC of the university,” she said.
Besides her, three others from the field of literature and education, from Delhi, have been selected for the award including – Tara Jauhar, J K Bajaj and Dilip Shahani.

Munna Khalid, a Ph.D. student enrolled at the Hindi Department, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) won two bronze medals in 4th National Para Badminton Championship organised by Para Sports Association of Odisha from 24th26th December,2021 at Bhubaneswar .
Khalid secured one bronze medal in single event and the other bronze in the double event partnering with Suresh Kadki.
He has become the first player from the State of NCT of Delhi to have won a medal in any National Level Para Badminton Championship. “I am very happy and it is my dream to win a medal for India in the Paralympics at international level” said Khalid.
JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar congratulated Kahlid for the achievement and wished him success in his future endeavors.
Before enrolling for his Ph.D., Khalid also did BA (Hons.) Hindi, Master of Social Work (MSW) and MA (Hindi) programmes from JMI.

It is a matter of great pride for the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) that Ms Rubina, a PhD research scholar from the Department of Electrical Engineering has been selected for the coveted Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) under the Direct Entry category for May-2021 drive.
JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar congratulated the scholar for this award and hoped she will justify the fellowship with quality research outcome.
Prof. Munna Khan, HOD, Department of Electrical Engineering said that she will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 70, 000 for first two years, Rs 75,000 for 3rd year, Rs.80,000 for the 4th year and the 5th year respectively. In addition to this, the scholar is also eligible for a research grant of Rs. 2 lakhs per year (Rs 10 Lakhs for five years) under the scheme.
Ms Rubina’s research will be based on “Development of Smart Capacitive Sensors for Condition Monitoring of Electrical Apparatus in Smart Grids”.
The main objective is to fabricate capacitive sensors with superior static and dynamic characteristics for real time online health monitoring of key electrical apparatus such as transformers, and gas insulated switchgears (GIS). The capacitive sensors are extensively used for sensing applications but mostly parallel plate and planar interdigital capacitive sensors with nanostructure sensing films. Although nanostructure materials are nowadays widely used for sensing applications and the stability of the nanomaterials is an important issue for real time applications.
Researchers mostly pay attention to the sensitivity which can be easily addressed with modern advanced IC devices but degradation of sensor performance due to stability is difficult to address by the ICs.
Ms Rubina, is pursuing PhD under the supervision of Prof. Tariqul Islam in the Electrical Engineering Department, JMI.
She will work on “Design, Modelling and Fabrication of High Performance Capacitive Sensors for Non-contact Measurement of Some Important Parameters in Smart Grids”. The sensors for smart grids need to face adverse conditions such as high temperature corrosive environment with electromagnetic noise interference.
The research work will pave a way for the development of novel capacitive sensors which will be cost effective, easy to install and fulfil the application needs.
Rubina thanked Prof. A. Q. Ansari, the coordinator PMRF scheme, HOD, Dean F/O Engg. & Technology, the supervisor and other members of the department who supported her for this achievement.
It is worth mentioning that under the Lateral Entry Scheme of the December 2020 drive, six research scholars of JMI were selected for PMRF. Five out of six are girl students.
The main motivation for this attractive fellowship scheme is to attract the best talent into research thereby realizing the vision of development through innovation. The scheme was announced in the Budget 2018-19.
