Rizwan Ahmad, a research scholar, working under the supervision of Prof. Moinuddin in the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University has won the “Young Innovator Award-2023” from the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences, held at AIIMS, Patna.
Ahmad’s outstanding poster presentation, titled “Modified Fibrinogen Entraps Blood Cells and Induces Oxidative Stress, Leading to Deposition of Arterial Clot: Possible Pathway in Metabolic Disorder and Development of a Novel Biomarker,” secured the second prize.
His research sheds light on the effects of fibrinogen protein under diabetes-induced stress, potentially aiding in the early detection of metabolic diseases.
Ahmad also attained first prize in an oral presentation at a symposium organized by the Endocrine Society of India and third prize at the Hematology conference organized by the Department of Pathology last year.

Prof Towqueer Alam, Department of Sunni Theology, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed Editor of Fikr-o-Nazar, a quarterly literary and scholarly magazine published by the university, for a period of one year or until further orders, with immediate effect.
Prof. Falahi joined the Department of Sunni Theology as a lecturer in 1993 and became a professor in 2010. He has published about 35 books in Urdu, Arabic, English and Hindi, and more than 200 research papers in the journals of national and international repute.
He visited Mercer University, Atlanta USA in April 2016 as a Visiting Professor and travelled to UK, Iran, Kuwait, and USA to present lectures at international conferences.
The research areas of his interest are Quraniyat, Arabic Literature and Comparative Study of Religions.

Professor Badiur Rahman, former Head of the Department of Arabic and Persian, University of Calcutta, a well-known educationist, celebrated writer, accomplished journalist, prominent Islamic scholar and a beloved teacher passed away in Kolkata on September 19, 2023.
He was scion of an illustrious and religious family of district Hooghly of West Bengal. His father Abdur Rahman was also an MBBS and associated with Tablighi Jamat.
He got his basic education at Darul Uloom Pandua, Hooghly, West Bengal. Thereafter, he did Alim in 1967 and Fazil in 1969 respectively from Madrasa Alia, Calcutta. He derived considerable benefits from a galaxy of eminent Islamic scholars over there. Especially, he achieved immense academic gains from noted Islamic scholars like Maulana Abu Mahfuz Karim Masumi and Maulana Rahatullah Azhari. After that, he did his B.A. (Hons) in 1974 and M.A. in 1976 respectively from University of Calcutta. He also did L.L.B and Ph.D therefrom.
Professor Badiur Rahman was an institution in himself. He was a familiar figure among the intellectual circles throughout India. Due to his extraordinary knowledge and being a paragon of morality, he carved a niche in the temple of fame. He had a say at the University of Calcutta. Despite being an Islamic scholar, he considerably impressed all faculty members, including VCs of University of Calcutta. Because of his profound knowledge of different languages, noble qualities and sublime norms everyone held him in high esteem.
Visiting Professor of Alia University, Kolkata, Dr. Rahman was also on the Senate and Syndicate of Calcutta University and Ph.D. Communities, Calcutta University and Alia University. He was also Ex-Chairman of PG Board of Studies in Arabic, Calcutta University, and U.G.B.O.S in Arabic, Kalyani University.
My acquaintance with Professor Badiur Rahman I think it was during the summer of 2009 when I first met him. The meet was actually regarding my Ph.D admission at University of Calcutta. Dr. Masihur Rahman, now professor at Alia University, Kolkata introduced me to him. Since then till his last breath, I remained in touch with him. I am fortunate enough to have done my Ph.D. under his supervision and guidance. He always treated me like his brother. Whenever I met him, I gained immense inspiration from him. Despite being a celebrated scholar, he was devoid of arrogance.
As a Teacher Professor Badiur Rahman started his teaching career as a lecturer at the University of Calcutta in 1983 and retired in 2016. Even after his retirement, he kept on teaching as a visiting faculty in the University of Calcutta and Alia University, Kolkata. He always proved himself as a selfless and dedicated teacher. He was an embodiment of all sublime qualities and virtues necessary for a good teacher. His method of teaching was unprecedented. It was his sword which he wielded so effectively that very few persons could match him. During lectures he pointed out such subtle points as students could not help without being impressed with him. He left an indelible mark in the domain of the teaching profession.
Undoubtedly, he was a beloved teacher. He was fondly described as B.R. Sir by his students. Scores of students quenched their thirst for knowledge from him. His talk was very touching. He met everyone cheerfully. His deep knowledge of comparative studies made him popular among his contemporaries. His learning was varied and profound. His personality was many-sided and balanced.
Right from the beginning, he was laborious and punctual. He was a man of transparent heart. No doubt, his extraordinary scholarship and erudition brought him wide reputation and fame. His main mission was to spread education. He left a galaxy of pupils behind him who impart education and work in various fields in and out of India. In fact, it is an everlasting tribute to him.
Dr. Badiur Rahman and Dr. Taha Husayn Dr. Rahman was an ardent admirer of Dr. Taha Husayn. He had vast knowledge about Dr. Taha. He did not only study all his books but he digested them. He also wrote a book titled, “Essays On Dr. Taha Husayn” published by Mazhar Education and Welfare Society, Malda.
Maulana Alauddin Nadwi, Head of the Department of Arabic, Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow wrote in the Preface of the said book, “To a great extent Dr. Badiur Rahman tried to introduce Dr. Taha Husayn in the Introduction to his book. The author regards Dr. Taha as a born critic. He presented Taha’s thoughts in a lucid way. To clear his viewpoints, he propounded various references from Dr. Taha’s books. Besides, he holds Taha as a moderate critic to the core.”
He had also done several research works on the first Nobel Laurate in the Arabic language Dr. Naguib Mahfouz.

Like Dr. Taha, Dr. Rahman was also a fan of Rabindranath Tagore. He wrote various articles and short stories on Tagore’s life and works in Arabic. And thus he introduced him in the Arabic World.
It should be noted that Dr. Rahman participated in different national and international seminars and exhibited his scholarly caliber there.
Because of his outstanding and remarkable services to the Arabic language and literature, he was conferred the President Award in 2018.
As a Writer Dr. Rahman was a prolific writer. He wrote several books on different subjects. Some of his major publications are:

Essays On Dr. Taha Husayn
Besides, he had 31 research articles in Arabic, English, Urdu and Bengali published in different literary journals. He had earned distinction in Belles Letters, short stories, poetry in English, Arabic and Bengali. He had long experience of research guidance in Arabic. He had examined about 26 theses and 15 M.Phil dissertations of various universitas of India and abroad.
Truly speaking, the comprehensive knowledge and intellectual brilliance of Dr. Rahman had been acknowledged by his contemporaries.
Describing his yeomen services, Professor Mohammad Noman Khan, former Head of the Department of Arabic Delhi University stated that the passing away of Dr. Badiur Rahman was a personal loss to him. He played a leading role in spreading the Arabic language in West Bengal. He gave new impetus to the students of W.B.
Professor Sanaullah Nadwi, Head of the Department of Arabic said, “Dr. Badiur Rahman was a highly qualified person and he was an emblem of morality. Everyone who observed him very closely would testify it. He also described his outstanding contribution in the field of education.
Similarly, Professor Ashfaq Ahmad Nadwi Head of the Department of Arabic Banaras Hindu University stated that Almighty Allah bestowed upon him different qualities. His personality was a marvellous amalgamation of teacher, writer and guide par excellence. Besides, he was a righteous, God-fearing and pious personality.
Dr. Rahman’s death caused a great vacuum. His myriad contributions to promotion and propagation of the Arabic language and literature will always be remembered. He is survived by his wife.
Thousands of his admirers thronged to attend the last rite of the departed soul. He was buried at Ghobra-1 Graveyard, of Park Circus Kolkata. May Allah adorn his grave with luminosity and refulgence and grant peace to his soul. Aameen!

Dr Aboobaker Siddique, coordinator of Mangaluru Byari study forum said that the study that is done on Byari language, literature, art and culture should touch the grassroot level. Then only it is possible to extend the work of Byari field.
Dr Siddique spoke after releasing ‘Byari: Nanu Kandanthe’ Kannada book authored by senior literatteur Haji T A Aliabba Jokatte at the Ravindra Kalabhavana of Mangaluru university campus on Friday.
Dr Siddique further said, “Many variations of literature have arrived in the Byari language. However, there is lack of grassroot level study. In this context the study bench will give more priority to field work. Let the book of experiences of Aliabba be a model book for research students.”
B A Mohammed Hanif, former president of Byari academy presided over the function. The programme was inaugurated by retired principal of Badriya college Dr Ismail N. Aliabba Jokatte, author of the book shared his experience with regards to the writing of the book. Journalist Hamza Malar gave introduction of the book.

Kashmir’s Wushu Sisters, Ansa Chishti and Ayeera Chishti brought laurels to India by clinching Gold medals in the Russian Moscow Stars Wushu International Championship.
The ongoing championship started in Moscow on 28 February and will conclude on March 5, 2024.
Both players performed exceptionally in their respective weight categories of 52 and 56. They beat their Russian opponents in the finals and made their fans proud as well as the entire sports fraternity of J&K.

Ayeera is the 1st Wushu Female Athlete who was shortlisted for this prestigious award. Similarly, Ansa, who won the 2nd Medal in the international Wushu Championship, had won Silver in the Georgia International Wushu Championship.
With today’s medal, she has won her 1st Gold medal in an international championship. Notably, both players are National Champions in their weight category as they won many medals in National championships.

Shabnam Shabbir Shaikh of Aambijalgaon, Maharashtra, trashes stereotypes of Indian women. Having picked wrestling as her field, this 28-year-old woman has broken all the shackles that a girl child faces while growing up in a small village.
Hailing from the village Aambijalgaon, Karjat, of the district Ahmednagar Shabnam was born in Jammu where her father Shabbir Sarabhai Shaikh was posted in the Indian Army. She is the third child of her parents and she grew up seeing her mother Rizwana Begum looking after the house and the family. However, Shabnam’s father always wanted his daughter to be brave, self-reliant, and break social stereotypes.
A great votary of women’s education Shabbir Shaikh encouraged his wife Rizwana Begum to complete her MSc degree after their marriage.Due to her father’s frequent postings across the country, Shabnam did her schooling mostly at the Army schools in Ambala, Udhampur, Srinagar, and Ahmedabad. After her father’s retirement, the family settled in their native village and Shabnam joined the local school.
She joined the 11th class in the Dada Patil College, Karjat, in the science stream. despite an irregular and sluggish bus service to Karjat, she somehow managed to study and also attend coaching for wrestling.

Shabnam completed her Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) from Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar). She also got a diploma certificate in Coaching from the National Institute of Patiala, Punjab, and later did her Master’s from Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and then registered for her PhD studies.
Shabnam’s wrestling career began at the age of seven with her father as her coach. Shabnam says, “’My father is my first guru.”
Shabnam came from a family of wrestlers: her grandfather Sadarbhai Shaikh and great-grandfather were well-known wrestlers in the area. Their ancestral house has a wrestling arena where she watched male members of her family and neighbours practice wrestling.
Shabnam had to face the scorn and disapproval of her extended family and relatives when she started practicing wrestling. People even asked her family why she was allowed to wear shorts.

Shabnam started with Kabaddi, a game that requires a lot of alacrity and stamina.
Initially, she did not get to enter the arena where her brothers wrestled, so she took to Kabbadi. “I used to think that if I wrestle and win that will be my victory. Even if I lose, it will also be my failure. Will happen… I expressed my desire to wrestle to my father. He responded positively.”
Shabnam’s father had a precondition for training her. He wanted her to concentrate on training and practice for the first two years. She started receiving training from her father and two elder brothers.
Every morning at 4 o’clock she was sent to pick lemons from their farm located about 10 km away. She learned the nuances of wrestling and participated in her first competition in Ludhiana (Punjab). She bagged a silver medal and there started her winning streak.
Shabnam says, “Once in my village, my father came to know about a competition in Delhi. I was just 10 years old at that time. He gave me a paper with the address written on it and a train ticket and wished me good luck for the journey.”
At that time she wondered why she was going alone, ‘Why don’t my parents come with me? But my father always used to tell me that some battles in life have to be fought alone,” she says going down memory lane.

Shabnam won the title of ‘Women Maharashtra Kesari’ in 2010. She has won the gold medal in ‘Shirdi Kesari’ for three consecutive years since 2009, the gold medal in ‘Latur’ in 2011, gold medal in the ‘Maharashtra State Kustigir Parishad’ competition for six consecutive years.
She has also participated in four inter-university competitions, 10 national competitions, and more than 15 state-level competitions. In the national level ‘Great Bharatkumari Wrestling Competition’, Shabnam is the first winner not only from the Muslim community but also from Maharashtra.
Shabnam says her father taught her that one doesn’t need an outer veil. “Always keep the veil that differentiates between good and bad people in front of your eyes!” he told her.
Shabnam says, “People used to question my parents’ ways. A girl should not play sports like wrestling. Teach her to fast (during Ramazan) and pray. Don’t you want only boys to play wrestling? Hundreds of questions were asked but my parents did not let the pressure of society affect me.
“My father never changed his opinion under the pressure of society. He never let these things affect my game. I always got the support of my parents and my elder brothers.”
Shabnam’s mother Rizwana Begum says, “I have not two, but three ‘sons’! My brothers did not give me a share of our parents’ property. But, I will not let this injustice happen to my daughter. I will give her everything she deserves. Shabnam has brought glory to us. As a mother, I will always be proud of her.”
Shabnam’s thesis for her Ph.D. degree is ‘Comparative study of emotional maturity of rural and urban women wrestlers in Maharashtra’. She toured the entire state for research.
Shabnam is the first woman in India to do a doctorate in sports studies. While doing her Ph.D. in Wrestling, there were often deliberate attempts to embarrass and thwart her effort to earn a doctorate.
In the year 2017, Shabnam was selected as the junior coach of the Wrestling Women’s Association of India; she imparted wrestling training to Anushka Sharma and Salman Khan for the film ‘Sultan‘. Shabnam has represented India in Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
She currently works as a ‘Senior Trainer’ in the ‘Wrestling Women’s Association’ of India. India has never had success in the ‘World Women’s Wrestling Championship’ till now. However, in the ‘Under-20 World Championship’ of 2023 India won seven medals in ‘Women’s Wrestling’. Out of these, three are gold medals.

Dr. Shabnam Shaikh is today known as the ‘International Wrestling Coach.
Shabnam says, “I was selected as the coach of ‘Maharashtra Team’ for the national tournament held in Gujarat last year. Twenty-four hours ago, my name was canceled! I was not given any idea about this.”
“Many times, despite having the right credentials and qualifications, I am not given a chance. Probably, because I live with self-respect! I always think that when someone asks me, “How did you get all this?’ I should proudly tell him, ‘I have earned it through my hard work.’
Shabnam says, “Wrestling gave me identity. Sometimes I wonder, ‘Is wrestling a curse or a blessing for me?’ Initially, relatives and other people of the society hated seeing me wrestle.
“Later, when I started winning competitions, people would post the news of my success on their ‘status’ on various social media platforms and write the caption, ‘Congratulations and best wishes to our sister or relative.’
After reading the news of my winning, I became everyone’s relative at that time! But, they speak against me on behind my back! However, now they hesitate to speak against me openly!”
Shabnam says, “Most of the time I am rejected for marriage. I play wrestling. The suitors who come to see as a potential candidate for marriage, see my trophies and see ‘Doctor’ written next to my name. When they go home their answer is, ‘We don’t want such an educated girl.'”
Shabnam continues to work hard to ensure that other girls do not face what she has.
Her advice to the youth: “No matter what happens, do not get tired. Do not give up the fight.” Her dream is to build a wrestling center for girls.

In a ceremony held on February 10 in Saudi Arabia, notable figures Zakaria Bajpe, CEO of Almuzain Gulf Saudi Contracting Co, K A Sheikh Karnire, director of operation at Expertise Contracting Co Ltd, and entrepreneur-social worker Sathish Kumar Anchan Bajal were honored with the Vishwa Manya 2024 award.
The recognition was part of the 17th World Kannada Convention, spearheaded by Sathish Kumar on February 8.
Zakaria, Sheikh Karnire, Rafeeq Soorinje, along with numerous workers, played pivotal roles in ensuring the success of the convention. Sathish Anchan, hailing from Pakkaladka Bajal Anchan’s House Kankanady, has been a compassionate figure, extending support to numerous financially disadvantaged families.
Born to the late Chandrashekhar Kundar Kodialbail and the late Sharada Anchan, Sathish faced early challenges, losing his mother at the age of three and being raised by his grandmother and uncle Raghava Anchan.
Sathish’s educational journey included primary schooling at St Joseph’s Higher Primary School in Bajal, secondary education at Rosario High School, PU at St Aloysius College, and a degree from St Aloysius Evening College.

The general body meeting of the Karnataka branch of Kuwait Kerala Muslim Association (KKMA), the largest social and community service organization of the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, was held at the Indian Community School Khaitan Auditorium on Friday, February 02.
The meeting started with a beautiful recitation of the Holy Quran by Master Mohammed Saihaan.
Nizam N, Vice-president of the KKMA Central Committee (Social Projects and Benefits), inaugurated the program while Karnataka branch General Secretary Mohammed Amin Sheik delivered the welcome address.
In his presidential address, Branch President Yusuf Rasheed highlighted the achievements of KKMA in various charitable social activities, including Family Benefit Scheme (FBS), Educational Scholarship Program (ESP), Kidney Dialysis Centers (KDC), Medical Assistance Program (MAP), Home for Homeless Deserved Families and Housing Improvement Program (HIP) and Magnet Team Service for the expat patients in Kuwait and repatriation of corpse to their home country. He also appreciated and thanked the team members for their selfless, dedicated service in the charitable activities.
Branch senior leader and Central Committee Development Vice-president Abdul Jabbar Gurpur presented the annual report detailing the past two-year’s activities and achievements of the branch. The finance report, which was presented by branch senior leader and Central Committee CFO Sayed Rafik, was unanimously approved by the members.
Active members of the branch Noushad Hussain, Firoz Abdul Samad, Najmuddin Usman Takey, D M Ansar and Irshad Nazeer Ahmed were felicitated for their excellent performance.
Shoukath Shirva Waseem Hisham, Najmuddin and Mabiya Adam were awarded for their contribution to the membership campaign.
The existing committee was dissolved by President Yusuf Rasheed, following which, the new committee for 2024-25 was formed under the supervision of returning officer Muneer Kuniya, Treasurer, KKMA Central Committee. Yusuf Rasheed was unanimously elected as the new president of KKMA Karnataka Branch for the next two years.
The newly elected president Yusuf Rasheed expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by KKMA. He also thanked the State President SM Farook for his selfless service and sincere support in implementing the various socio-community services back home.
KKMA Karnataka Branch senior leader and Central Committee working president BM Iqbal briefed the various privileges available for KKMA members in Kuwait as well as in India from the various business firms such as clinics, hospitals and hypermarkets.
State President SM Farook, in his message after the election, congratulated the new office-bearers and highlighted the importance of charity and team work. One of the senior well-known social worker Janab Hassan Yusuf Kankanady complimented the newly elected management committee, and stressed on the importance of teamwork as it makes ‘dream work’.
The new office-bearers of all six zones of the Karnataka Branch were introduced on the occasion. Senior leaders Mohammed Nazeer Bolar, Azhar Sheik, Syed Manipur, Abdul Latheef Shedia Nasser AV, Abdul Rahiman and audience members Mohammad Yusuf, Abdul Razzak and Abdul Sattar congratulated the new committee and extended their support.
KKMA Central President Ibrahim Kunil, General Secretary KC Rafiq, City Zonal Secretary Mohammed Rayies also graced the occasion.

In a remarkable initiative aimed at empowering visually impaired Muslim students, MS Education Academy has launched a pioneering project to provide comprehensive Islamic education in Braille format.
Since 2014, MS Education Academy has been dedicated to assisting visually impaired students, initially by distributing Braille versions of the Quran.
Recognizing the growing need for Islamic literature in Braille, the academy embarked on a mission to develop a tailored curriculum accessible to visually impaired students.
Over the years, MS Education Academy has meticulously developed Islamic literature in Braille, tailored to the spoken Urdu language prevalent among Muslims in Telangana.
Comprehensive Deeniyat course
A team of experts was assembled to compile a comprehensive Deeniyat course specifically designed for the visually impaired. This initiative has resulted in the creation of a series of Braille books titled “Asaan Deeniyat”
The first instalment of this groundbreaking endeavour, “Asaan Deeniyat Part 1,” has been successfully implemented with the organization of offline classes in Old city of Hyderabad in 2019.
To further extend their reach and cater to students beyond Hyderabad, MS Education Academy launched an online course titled ‘Deeniyat Visually Impaired Maktab.’ This online platform provides flexibility for students residing outside of Hyderabad or those preferring to learn from the comfort of their homes.

The impact of this initiative has been profound, with 250 visually impaired students having already enrolled in the course and demonstrated remarkable progress in grasping the material. Remarkably, students have been able to complete Part 1 of the course in just six months, underscoring the efficacy of the Braille curriculum developed by MS Education Academy.
In recognition of their achievements, MS Education Academy organized a special event at its corporate Office to celebrate the completion of Part 1 of the course.
Certificates of completion were awarded to students, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey. Additionally, students were provided with copies of “Asaan Deeniyat Part 2” alongside Braille copies of the Quran, further enriching their educational resources.

The annual meeting of the Jamiatul Falah National Regional Coordination Committee, Saudi Arabia, was held at the Red Pot Restaurant in the city on Friday, February 23.
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District delegates of Jamiatul Falah as well as delegates from Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam and Jubail attended the annual meeting.
Dammam Unit President JF Shareef Karkala, JFCC President Shahul Hameed KK and Ameer Mansoor were present in the meeting.
The delegates unanimously elected Mansur Ali Ahmed as the “Ameer” for the year 2024-25.
The meeting, which was moderated by Siraj, concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by lunch.
