Delhi’s Historic Madrasa Rahimiya Struggles to Protect Its Rich Legacy

DELHI :

The centuries-old Islamic educational centre, birthplace of the Urdu Qur’an translation, struggles to protect its legacy amid growing Hindu-led development projects.

New Delhi :

Hidden along the busy Bahadur Shah Zafar Highway, Mehdiyan — home to the revered Madrasa Rahimiya, also known as Jamia Rahimia — stands as one of Delhi’s oldest Islamic learning centres. Established by Shah Abdul Rahim, father of the famed scholar Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlvi, this madrasa has for centuries served as a vital institution nurturing Islamic scholarship. However, today its existence is threatened by creeping urban development dominated by Hindu groups, threatening to erase a vital piece of Muslim heritage.

“Madrasa Rahimiya was not just a school; it was a movement to bring Muslims closer to the Qur’an’s true teachings,” explains Mufti Muhammad Sabir, a Hadith instructor at the madrasa. “But its history is being erased by those who prioritise development over our heritage.”

Madrasa Rahimiya holds a proud place in history, especially for pioneering the first Urdu translation of the Qur’an. In the late 1700s, Shah Abdul Qadir, a key scholar educated under his father and others, undertook the translation project at the Akbarabadi Mosque. This effort laid the foundation for making Islamic scripture accessible to millions of Urdu-speaking Muslims across India, who were otherwise unable to understand the original Arabic text.

“Shah Abdul Qadir’s translation was revolutionary, yet it faced strong opposition from scholars who considered translating the Qur’an sacrilegious,” says Maulana Sabir. “Despite this, his work endured and shaped generations.”

But this rich history has not been free from hardship. After the 1857 War of Independence, British colonial forces destroyed the Akbarabadi Mosque and shuttered the madrasa. The adjoining Mehdiyan cemetery, the resting place of Shah Waliullah and his family members, was drastically reduced. Historian Rana Safavi laments, “Mehdiyan was once a vast necropolis for saints and commoners alike. Now, much of it is lost to encroachment, with what remains used merely as a washing place.”

In the 1960s, Delhi’s expanding urban sprawl posed new threats. Plans to demolish Mehdiyan to build flats and houses were only halted because of the heroic resistance of Ali Muhammad, known locally as Sher-e-Mewat. “He lay down in front of bulldozers and even Pandit Nehru’s car to protect these sacred shrines,” recalls resident Bilal Ahmed. “He broke his leg but ensured our heritage survived.” Jawaharlal Nehru himself was moved by Ali Muhammad’s determination and ordered the preservation of these sites, which were later enclosed by a boundary wall.

Yet, the madrasa’s survival is once again at risk. Critics point out that the latest wave of urban planning, heavily influenced by Hindu groups, disproportionately targets Muslim heritage areas. Historian Zafar Khan asserts, “Hindu groups have long viewed places like Mehdiyan as obstacles to their vision of a ‘modern’ Delhi. This is not just about land — it’s an attempt to erase Muslim identity.”

Local Muslims feel the marginalisation acutely. “Our history is being systematically sidelined,” says Ayesha Begum, a teacher at Jamia Rahimia. “While Hindu temples receive government protection and funding, our sacred sites are neglected, ignored, or demolished.” She highlights the glaring lack of state support for the madrasa compared to the ample aid granted to Hindu religious institutions.

Despite the ongoing pressures, Madrasa Rahimiya endures as a symbol of resilience and faith. Its small mosque and student quarters continue to operate, preserving the teachings that Shah Waliullah and his predecessors established centuries ago.

“We teach the same Qur’an and Hadith that Shah Waliullah did,” says Mufti Sabir. “No matter the encroachment or neglect, that legacy will not disappear.”

The battle to save Mehdiyan reflects wider tensions in India, where Muslim cultural and religious heritage frequently confronts Hindu nationalist agendas. For now, the madrasa stands firm — a testament to Delhi’s Muslim scholars’ enduring spirit and their steadfast commitment to preserving Islamic knowledge and identity.

Aryadan Shoukath wins Nilambur bypoll, defeats CPI(M)’s M. Swaraj by 11,077 votes

KERALA :

Riding a strong anti-incumbency wave, Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath emerged triumphant in Kerala’s Nilambur by-election, securing 77,737 votes and defeating CPI(M)’s M. Swaraj by a margin of 11,077 votes in a closely fought contest.

Nilambur’s former MLA, P.V. Anvar, the whistleblower who exposed the alleged corruption of the Left Front government and whose resignation in January triggered this by-election, garnered 19,760 votes, while CPI(M)’s M. Swaraj secured 66,660 votes.

BJP candidate Mohan George finished fourth, trailing behind the Congress, CPI(M), and P.V. Anvar, with 8,648 votes.

The constituency, which falls within the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat represented by Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi, had 10 candidates registered, with 75.87 per cent polling.

Aryadan Shoukath continued to hold a steady lead over his main rival, CPI(M) candidate M. Swaraj, even in areas traditionally considered LDF strongholds.

With this victory, Shoukath, the son of late Congress veteran Aryadan Muhammed—who represented Nilambur from 1987 to 2016—has not only reclaimed Nilambur for the Congress but also secured its first by-election gain from the LDF since 2021, breaking a streak in which it had only managed to retain its sitting seats.

The election, which Kerala Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan described as the “semifinal to the coming Kerala Legislative Assembly election,” is seen as crucial as it reflected public sentiment on the nine-year rule of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government.

A loss in the by-election would have dealt a blow to Satheesan, who had firmly rejected Anvar’s bid to align himself with the UDF in Nilambur.

However, by securing around 19,000 votes, P.V. Anvar showcased his continuing influence in Nilambur, a constituency he had represented since 2016 as a CPI(M)-backed Independent.

His performance highlighted his stronghold in the region and even prompted KPCC president Sunny Joseph to remark, “The UDF has not shut its doors on P.V. Anvar.” In many ways, Anvar’s candidacy split the anti-LDF votes, some of which might otherwise have gone to the Congress.

The bypoll outcome is crucial for both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF government and the Congress-led Opposition UDF, as Kerala heads towards Assembly elections in April–May 2026. The Congress’s victory in the by-election serves as a major boost to its efforts to end the Pinarayi Vijayan regime, which is aiming for a third consecutive term.

Shaheen Academy Felicitates NEET Achievers; Abdul Qadeer Urges Education-Led Social Reform

Bidar, KARNATAKA / UTTAR PRADESH :

New Delhi:

Shaheen Academy organised a grand event to honour its NEET achievers. The ceremony celebrated the students’ success and dedication.

The event was attended by educationists and community leaders. Among them was Abdul Qadeer, founder and chairman of Shaheen Group of Institutions.

In his keynote speech, Abdul Qadeer praised students and faculty. He stressed that education should not just be for earning. “Education can uplift society and spark social change,” he said. “It plays a key role in national growth and development.”

He reaffirmed Shaheen Academy’s mission: to offer value-based, holistic education. He said students must grow into responsible citizens and future leaders.

Abdul Qadeer urged students to look beyond personal success. He asked them to engage in social service and nation-building.

He also made a heartfelt appeal against lavish weddings. “Don’t spend lakhs on grand celebrations,” he said. “Use that money to educate your children, neighbours, and the poor.”

He called education the true celebration. “Transforming lives through education is the real joy,” he added.

He also underlined the need for wider educational outreach. “Five or six institutions are not enough,” he said. “We need 5,000 organisations working for value-based education. Shaheen must have 500 branches to transform society.”

Kaleemul Hafeez, Chairman of Al-Hafeez Educational Academy, also spoke. He compared Abdul Qadeer’s work to that of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. “Abdul Qadeer Sahib is continuing that legacy to educate a new generation,” he said.

Noor Nawaz, founder of The Hind Guru Academy, echoed the same spirit. He reminded students of the idea of Rabbul Alamin—Lord of all worlds. “Be ambassadors of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ,” he said. “Show compassion, honesty, and service in all you do.”

The event ended with a special honour for teachers and staff of Shaheen Academy. Their hard work was praised as a key part of the students’ success.

The celebration not only recognised academic achievement but also highlighted education’s role in building a better society.

Azmet Jah appears on city skyline after two years; asserts his position as Ninth Nizam

Hyderabad, TELANGANA :

All is not well in paradise. Rumblings indicate legal firecrackers on Hyderabad’s skyline.

Hyderabad:

In a belated move, Prince Azmet Jah has come out with a declaration that he is the successor to his father, Prince Mukarram Jah Bahadur who passed away on January 15, 2023.

At that time, Mukarram Jah’s body was flown in from Turkey where he was living and died, to Hyderabad and laid to rest at the Royal Cemetery located within the courtyard of Makkah Masjid.

He was given the Guard of Honour by the Telangana State government.

Public notice

In a public notice published on the front page of Siasat Urdu daily on Saturday (July 5, 2025), Azmet Jah has claimed that on January 20, 2023, he was declared the titular head of the Asaf Jahi family. The notice carried his photograph with father Prince Mukarram Jah sharing the ‘gaddi’ (throne or chair).

The caption to the photograph does not say when the picture was taken but mentions that it was taken at Chowmahalla Palace to informally declare his son as heir.

The advertisement also carries another photograph in which he can be seen sitting alone on the same gaddi, and the caption reads that the photograph was taken on January 20, 2023.

The breaking of silence by Azmet Jah on the succession after over two years of the death of his father is intriguing. Some of the senior citizens of Hyderabad and observers of the ‘Royal Family’ are wondering why this time was chosen to make a public statement.

There could be two main reasons. One, that his brother from another mother, Ayesha (formerly Helen) Sikandar (Alexander) Jah has given him a legal notice a few months ago staking claim over the wealth left behind by Mukarram Jah (Siasat.com had carried the details of the notice at that time). He has said in the notice that he too is a shareholder in the properties left behind by his father.

Huge assets

The assets left behind by Mukarram Jah are huge. They include Chowmahalla Palace, Falaknuma Palace (which has been leased out to Taj Group of Hotels), a portion of Chiran Palace (which has been renamed by the state government as Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Park in Banjara Hills), King Koti Palace and other sundry properties.

The allegedly penniless Sikandar Jah is said to be in the city pursuing the case he has filed by lawyers who have their office in Secunderabad. It is not known in what state that case is.

There is another twist in the tale. Raunaq Yar Khan, a scion of the Nizam family, has staked claim to the ‘kursi’ a little after the demise of Mukarram Jah. Some members of the Nizam family who describe themselves as Sahebzadas (sons) of the persons who were closely related to the Nizam have gathered around him and declared him as successor to Mukarram Jah, the eighth Nizam.

Raunaq is a claimant

Raunaq Yar Khan mostly carries a bundle of documents with him to prove that he is actually the current Nizam. Many people, including those in the media, toe his line.

According to the Royal Family sources, even the legitimacy of the Eighth Nizam, Mukarram Jah Bahadur is questionable. They cite the episode where Princess Ahmad Unnisa alias Shahzadi Pasha, daughter of the Nizam Seventh had questioned the legitimacy of the title bestowed or taken away by Mukarram Jah. She claimed rights to the title and assets as she was the true heir of her father. She took her claim to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and won. The verdict was challenged by Mukarram Jah in the Supreme Court. It was there that the aunt and nephew reached an understanding (it is not known at what cost), and the matter was declared closed.
