Prof. Mujtaba Lokhandwala Turns Pune Societies into Living Science Classrooms

Pune, MAHARASHTRA :

Pune:

In several housing societies across Pune, evening playtime is taking a new direction as children gather with simple materials to explore science under the guidance of Prof. Mujtaba Lokhandwala. His initiative brings activity based learning directly into residential spaces, encouraging curiosity and practical understanding among young learners.

At a time when many children spend hours on screens, these sessions offer a hands on alternative. Using everyday objects such as plastic bottles, straws, mirrors, and magnets, Prof. Lokhandwala explains scientific concepts in an engaging manner. Children learn about air pressure, light reflection, motion, and energy through simple experiments conducted in open spaces.

Prof. Lokhandwala, who has over 18 years of teaching experience in engineering, serves as a trainer for activity based learning under the Department of Science and Technology. He believes science education must move beyond memorisation and focus on observation and questioning. He said children often learn definitions for exams, yet struggle to explain real life applications.

During the sessions, children are encouraged to ask questions without fear. The environment remains informal and interactive. According to Prof. Lokhandwala, the scientific process begins when a child asks why something happens.

After each workshop, a science club is formed within the society. Interested adults receive training to continue activities with children. These clubs aim to conduct at least one session every month, ensuring continuity and community participation.

The initiative also includes astronomy sessions held on terraces. Children observe the Moon, Jupiter, and constellations through telescopes. They learn to identify stars such as the North Star and understand their positions. These experiences help them connect with the natural world and develop interest in science beyond textbooks.

Parents who initially attend out of curiosity gradually become active participants. The initiative has begun to change the atmosphere within societies, with families engaging in educational activities together. Children now discuss experiments during holidays instead of leisure outings.

Prof. Lokhandwala said modern lifestyles often disconnect children from nature and inquiry. He stressed the need to provide meaningful alternatives to screen based entertainment. His work shows that simple methods and community involvement can reshape how children learn science.

Asif Iqbal Shaikh Jeelani Clinches Gold Medal in Inter-University Cycling Race, Encourages Muslim Youth to Excel

Akola, MAHARASHTRA :

Akola :

Asif Iqbal Shaikh Jeelani, a qualified lawyer with an impressive academic background and a dedicated government employee added another feather to his cap by winning the gold medal in the 10 km cycle inter-university race at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (University) here. The prestigious award was presented by Dr. S.R. Gadakh, Vice-Chancellor of the University, on the occasion of Republic Day.

Asif, who holds postgraduate degrees in Urdu, English, Public Administration, and a legal background with LLB and LLM in Criminology, currently serves as ASO in the Office of the Comptroller at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola. His academic achievements are complemented by his dedication to public service.

This isn’t the first time Asif has been recognized for his outstanding contributions. In the academic year 2014-15, he was honored with the Best Employee Award by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Furthermore, in 2018, Asif displayed his literary prowess by winning the first prize in an essay competition.

Despite his numerous accomplishments, Asif is deeply concerned about the lack of Muslim representation in sports activities within the university. Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth has a strength of approximately 4,500 employees, with only a meager 10 being Muslims.

Expressing his views on the matter, Asif said, “It’s disheartening to see that not a single Muslim participates in the sports activities of the university. As Muslims, we should strive to excel in whatever we do. Despite the challenges and pressures, we must discard negativity, stay positive, trust in Allah, and continue competing without getting disheartened.”

His recent gold medal victory in the inter-university cycling race serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that excellence knows no bounds. Asif’s message to the Muslim youth resonates with a call for active participation and a commitment to overcoming obstacles. His achievements stand as a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and a positive mindset.

The Poet of Palnadu: How Sheikh Kareemullah Taught a Generation to Question

Palnadu District, ANDHRA PRADESH :

Beyond the Classroom: Honouring the literary soul and dedicated leadership of Headmaster Sheikh Kareemullah on his retirement, May 31, 2026

In the rural classrooms of Palnadu, a quiet revolution has been unfolding for decades. It did not begin with protests or speeches, but with the cadence of Vemana’s poems and the relentless commitment of a man who believed the classroom was a laboratory for democracy. As Sheikh Kareemullah, a senior educator and luminary of contemporary Telugu literature, hangs up his boots as a Headmaster this May 31, his legacy remains etched not in the service records of the state, but in the social consciousness of a generation.

For Kareemullah, teaching was never a mechanical transfer of curriculum. His tenure, particularly in the village of Enugupalem, became legendary. When news of his transfer broke, the village didn’t just file a grievance; two tractor-loads of residents reportedly arrived at the district office, demanding his retention.

It was a rare instance where the bureaucracy bowed to the pedagogical impact of an individual. Kareemullah had transformed his classroom into a crucible for critical thought, teaching children the nuances of pluralism, equality, and the weight of historical justice. He did not just teach the future; he nurtured it.

If teaching was his primary vocation, literature was his chosen battlefield. Kareemullah’s evolution as a writer is a mirror to the anxieties of the era. As communal tensions and social polarisation grew, his poetry shifted from traditional progressive themes to a sharper, more visceral exploration of identity.

His poem ‘Naa Raktham Kaaru Chauka’ (My Blood is Cheap) became more than a verse; it became a rallying cry for dignity. His long poem, ‘Saibu’, remains a seminal text in the Telugu literature, articulating the Muslim experience in India with a defiance that was both unapologetic and profoundly human.

Perhaps his most significant contribution to the literary canon is the introduction of the ‘Ababeel’, a poetic form inspired by Qur’anic allegory. By using the metaphor of small birds confronting overwhelming might, Kareemullah demonstrated that brevity could harbour immense political weight. The form took root, inspiring a new wave of younger poets to find their voices, and transforming what began as a creative experiment into a full-fledged literary movement.

Through the establishment of ‘Murasam’, Kareemullah created a vital space for Muslim writers to find a common ground, turning a literary collective into a school of critical thinking.

Throughout his career, Kareemullah has been the recipient of numerous honours, including the ‘Janmabhoomi Best Teacher’ award and the ‘Adarsha Guru Brahma’ title. Yet, to those who know him, these awards are mere footnotes.

His true achievement lies in his ability to bridge the gap between the teacher’s desk and the poet’s podium. His work, now part of university curricula, continues to be subjected to the rigorous academic scrutiny that defines a classic. He has navigated the complexities of domestic politics, critiqued imperialism, and remained a staunch defender of humanism.

As he steps into retirement, Kareemullah leaves behind a roadmap for the modern intellectual: to remain a teacher when the world is in chaos, and a poet when the world has lost its words. He remains not just a chronicler of his times, but an architect of the resistance against the silencing of voices.
