Mines officer from Bellary goes missing in Odisha

IbrahimShariffMPos02dec2013

Sandur (Bellary dist):

Ibrahim Sharief, a resident of Yeshwantnagar in the taluk, who works as an assistant controller of mines with the Indian Bureau of Mines in Odisha, reportedly went missing on November 25.

Except his two-wheeler found near a private hospital, there have been no clue about his whereabouts, said the worried family members of Sharief. The 36-year-old officer, known for his uprightness, had left home for work in Bhubaneshwar, around 10 am.

When he didn’t return home for lunch, his wife Salma Begum called him on his cellphone which was switched off. Panicked, she enquired at the office where she was told that he had not come to work.

She informed her family members in Yeshwantnagar immediately and registered a complaint with the police.

During the investigation, the police found his two-wheeler abandoned in front of a hospital near his office.

His brother Subhan told Deccan Herald that even after a week since Ibrahim went ‘missing’, the family has received no information either about him or about the progress in the investigation.

He urged the Odisha government to direct the police to probe the matter at the earliest.

Ibrahim’s father Giddu Sab, with tears in his eyes, said that the last time he saw his son was when he had come home for Bakrid. He prayed for Ibrahim’s safety.

Sandur legislator E Tukaram said that he had discussed the issue with the Home minister and the DG&IGP of Karnataka, who are in touch with their counterparts in Odisha. The matter was raised in the ongoing winter session in Belgaum, he said.

Unani regimen offers hope to mishap victim

Imran Khan, a resident of Tumkur, had been bedridden for the best part of 12 years after nearly 200 kg of steel fell on his back when he was visiting a construction site.

The 28-year-old lost all hope of walking again till he found out about Ilaj bit Tadbeer (regimental therapy), a little-known system of unani medicine involving massage, cupping and leeching using herbs. Imran underwent 14 months of continuous treatment at the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), which falls under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Now, he has started walking with support.

The story of Tousif Ahmed from BTM Layout is similar to Imran’s. Tousif injured his spine in an accident in Andhra Pradesh in January 2012 in which his uncle died.

“I was told by a private hospital that I would not walk again and would be bedridden for the rest of my life. But with intervention from NIUM, I am moving in a wheelchair and also walking with crutches,” he said.

Tousif has been receiving treatment at the Institute for the past four months. He is currently shooting videos of recovering patients at NIUM in order to make a short film.

“I had wanted to set up a call-centre after getting my BCA, but the accident crippled my dream. But as I can move again, I have set a target of five months to walk out of this hospital,” he said.

Dr D A Muzzaffar Bhat, resident medical officer of NIUM, said the centre was focusing on neuro-rehabilitation. This included attending to patients who suffered from stroke, myopathy, epilepsy, motor-neuron disease, Parkinson’s disease, hemiplegia and paraplegia. He said NIUM takes up cases referred from other hospitals like NIMHANS.

He referred to the successful treatment of Mohammed Farooq, who was admitted to Victoria Hospital after meeting with an accident. He was bedridden for eight months with no sensation in his lower-back. Farooq started treatment at NIUM in January and is now walking with the help of crutches.

“No surgeries are done here and our approach is to develop cells and strengthen nerves and muscles,” Dr Bhat said .

Options for Cerebral Palsy Aditya Kholi greets you with a smile and offers a chair to those who approach him and only when he tries to walk, do people notice a problem.

Aditya is a child who was born with cerebral palsy and could hardly move his legs. His father Mahesh Kohli, an IT professional, had quit his job in Dubai to research treatment options for Aditya, when a friend told him about Ilaj bit Tadbeer.

After five months of treatment, Aditya can now sit comfortably and also fold his legs and walk.

Indian brothers beat Google to street view

 Bangalore :

Who needs Google Street View !  Even as the global search major struggles with Indian authorities to get permissions to take images of Indian city streets, a small Mumbai-based mapping company has done all that Google had planned, and perhaps more, for the top 54 Indian cities.

Genesys International , founded in 1995 by brothers Sohel and Sajid Malik, have captured numerous images of almost every street in these cities, and stitched the images together to create 360-degree panoramic views of the streets, almost exactly the way Google has done in many other parts of the world.

On Tuesday, the company launched the service under the brand Wonobo (wonobo.com). The site suffered from latency on Tuesday, and there were many complaints online about the slow download speed. But the company said the speed will improve in a day or so as they get everything in place.

So how come they were able to do something that Google has not been able to yet in India? Sajid Malik told TOI that one advantage Genesys had was in having worked with the government for many years for their mapping services. “For street view, the government, including the defence ministry and the Survey of India, threw a lot of regulations at us. We painstakingly fulfilled their requirements, including not taking pictures in sensitive areas,” he said.

The company has so far been in the services business, creating map content for others such as Navteq (provider of electronic navigable maps), Nokia and Bing, and was involved recently in creating digital maps of Dubai, Mecca and Medina.

MappingMPos22nov2013

Wonobo street view is being launched initially for 12 cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, Costal Goa, Kolkata, Agra and Pune. The remaining will be launched over the following weeks.

Wonobo’s main street view service provides a satellite map and the street view on your screen. You can click on any part of the map and get the corresponding street view. You can look all around a point on a street. You can click or drag on the street view to go down a street.

There’s a search box to find locations. With the help of field staff, Wonobo has tagged some 10 million points of interest. That includes 4 million business locations. You can walk into some of these locations — like Novotel hotel in Mumbai — and look all around. Though the company is not charging Novotel now, these are potential revenue sources.

For many of the small businesses tagged, it’s their first web presence. “Any merchant can mention his suite of services, show real-time prices or available inventory, and showcase interiors. One of our revenue sources will be based on such hyper-local engagement,” Sajid said.

Random checks TOI did on Wonobo showed that some of the images are a little dated, some important roads have not been covered yet, some of the tagging could have been better done. The company said their effort is to ensure that images are no more than six months old.

The Wonobo platform also enables anybody to create pictorial storylines and guides. You could create a ‘Sachin Tendulkar guide’ that shows everything from the nursing home he was born in to the house he lives in now.

Mumbai :

When it comes to philanthropy, Indians don’t share the table with the likes of Bill Gates but still there are a few who do really donate and the latest list is topped by Azim Premji of Wipro.

Close on the heels of releasing the second edition of Hurun India Rich List, China-based Hurun Report Inc launched the inaugural Hurun India Philanthropy List 2013, with IT tycoon Azim Hashim Premji emerging as the most generous Indian with a donation of Rs 8,000 crore in the past year.

Region-wise, the report said, south Indians showed the way for making contributions with a cumulative donation of Rs 10,000 crore while north Indians pitched in with contributions of Rs 4,865 crore.

The Companies Bill, 2013 mandates companies, with a net worth of more than Rs 500 crore or revenue of more than Rs 1,000 crore or net profit of more than Rs 5 crore, to earmark at least two per cent of their average net profits of the preceding three years for CSR activities.

“This amendment to the Companies Bill should provide more transparent reporting of corporate donations,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, publisher at large of Hurun Report India.
