Third time MLA Raziya Sultana is only Muslim legislator in 117-member Punjab Assembly

Raziya Sultana, wife of a top cop and third time MLA, is the only Muslim legislator in the 117-member Punjab Assembly. Congress is set to form its government in the state, and Raziya Sultana as one of the seniormost members in the party, eyes for a key post in the government.

Raziya Sultana, who contested the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections as Congress candidate, defeated her nearest rival Mohammad Owais of Akali Dal by over 12,000 votes. Raziya Sultana is wife of Mohammad Mustafa DGP Punjab who was bestowed with with five gallantry medals.

According to the final result of Punjab Assembly elections declared by the State Election Commission, Raziya Sultana polled a total of 58.982 votes whereas Mohammad Owais could bag just 46,280 votes.

Mohammad Arshad contesting from Malerkotla was the only Muslim candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Mohammad Arshad came a distant third bagging 17,635 votes.

Raziya Sultana was defeated by F. Nesara Khatoon (Farzana Alam) of Akali Dal in the 2012 elections in Malerkotla – the seat she won in 2002 and 2007.

Malerkotla has been represented by Muslims most of the time since 1957. Yusuf Zaman Begum was the first Muslim to win from Malerkotla in 1962. She was followed by H. H. N. I. A. Khan in 1967, Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan in 1969, Sajida Begum in 1972 and 1980, Anwar Ahmad Khan in 1977, Nusrat Ali Khan in 1985 and 1997 and Abdul Ghaffar in 1992 state elections.

The Punjab Assembly had 02 Muslim MLAs in 2012. Besides, F. Nesara Khatoon (Farzana Alam) of Akali Dal who won from Malerkotla in 2012, Mohammad Sadique of the Congress won from Bhadaur Assembly seat in 2012.

Congress MLA Mohammad Sadique contested the 2017 elections from Jaito Assembly seat. But, he lost the elections to Baldev Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by some 10,000 votes. Baldev Singh polled 45,344 votes and Mohammad Sadique bagged 35,351 votes.

In Qadia, hub of Ahmadiyas, Fatehjang Singh Bajwa of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the elections. No muslim candidate was in fray in this constituency.

Congress has fielded 02 Muslim candidates in 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Akali Dali has given party ticket to 01 Muslim each. The BJP has not fielded any Muslim in the 2017 state elections

Overall, the Congress has won 77 of the total 117 seats of the Punjab Assembly. AAP is a distant second with 20 seats.

Akali Dal and BJP, ruling the state since last ten years, ended with 15 and 03 seats respectively. Lok Insaaf Party won 02 seats.

Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Unit Felicitates Booker Prize Winner Deepa Basti in Madikeri

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Women’s Unit honored acclaimed writer and Booker Prize winner Deepa Basti at her residence in Madikeri on Tuesday, recognizing her remarkable contribution to literature.

During the felicitation, members of the unit encouraged Basti to focus on promoting human values through her work, highlighting the powerful role of literature in bringing about societal change.

Responding to their thoughts, Basti acknowledged that the literary field holds immense potential to influence social transformation and stressed the importance of sustained efforts in that direction.

The program was attended by Kodagu District Women’s Unit President Muheena Abubakkar, Madikeri President Waheeda Shaukat, and members Bibi Fatima, Maryam Mafeeda, and Tahira.

Also present were District President C.H. Apsar, Madikeri Local President G.H. Mohammed Hanif, members Mohammad Mustafa, and journalist Abdullah, all of whom extended their congratulations and best wishes to Basti for her future endeavors.

Goa: 17 Muslims register victory in panchayat polls

Muslims’ efforts to make imprints in political landscape of Goa yielded some positive results in the recently held panchayat elections with as many as 17 Muslim candidates registering a win across the state.

Counting of votes for elections to the 186 panchayat bodies spreading over 1,464 wards was held on 12 August and their results were declared on the same day. A total of 5,038 candidates were in the fray.

Sexagenarian social rights activist Osman Sayed was one significant figure who won from Querim Village Panchayat from Sattari Taluka. He is the lone Muslim winner in the entire north Goa. Osman said it is a victory for the people. Besides, he gave credit to his victory to his leaders and Vishwajeet Rane (BJP MLA, Health and TCP Minister).

Responding to a question about joining the BJP, he said, “I will be with my leader Vishwajeet Rane wherever he goes.”

Sajida Bi Shaikh, Naveed Tahsildar and his wife Afreen Banu won from Curti Khandepar Panchayat. Naveed, a senior political activist, was very happy during chat with Muslim Mirror and gave credit to his voters. According to Naveed, the decision on joining a political party has not yet been taken.

Rumdamol Panchayat close to Maragao city is witnessing the highest number of Muslim Panchs (village heads) in the state – now it has 7 Muslim Panchs out of nine including Mohammad Mustafa, Sufiya bi Shaikh, Zubeda Bi Agasar, Murtuza Kaknoor, Mohammad Samiullah, Mubina Bi Faniband and Umran Pathan who defeated well known Goan Muslim face and BJP spokesperson Urfan Mulla.

In Bicholim Taluka, Bibi Ayesha Zamir Murgud was the only Muslim to won the poll. In Chimbel Panchayat, Muhammad Nazir, Shabana Bhadarpur Bandore, Reshma Mulla registered the victory.  Abdul Rahim (Bhoma, Panchayat) and Abdul Karim Yaseen (Corgao) are the other winners.

As per official data, there were 3,85,867 and 4,11,153 voters in North Goa and South Goa respectively.

SIDBI marks Foundation Day as Day of Sampark

The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) commemorated its foundation day as day of  Sampark (connect), Samwad (interaction), Suraksha (security) and Sampreshan (dissemination).

The bank’s chairman and managing director Mohammad Mustafa launched a series of initiatives from Lucknow headquarters. “The occasion is an opportunity to look within and reinvent our strategy for course correction and development,” he said.

While flagging off the bank’s MSME contact programme, he called upon bank’s officers to use the day long stay at MSMEs to come closer in understanding their opportunities, challenges and the eco system to comprehend what can be done to ease the way they do business. This is what SIDBI has been created for and learning with footprints at field level is the true spirit of the organisation, he said.

A new step forward in commencing Bancassurance services for MSMEs was also taken.

An MoU was signed with New India Assurance and two MSMEs were issued insurance policies.

While launching the revamped SIDBI website (www.sidbi.in) on the occasion the CMD mentioned that it is an attempt to reimagine the site to reflect the new vibrant face of SIDBI aiming to transform the MSE ecosystem.

Besides providing crisp and precise information about the various strategic interventions made by SIDBI, it exhibits potential for the MSE aspirants through its other offerings in the form of a “Contactless Loan Platform” likely to be introduced on the website shortly.

Mohammad Mustafa is SIDBI’s new CMD

UTTAR PRADESH :

The Centre has appointed Mohammad Mustafa, a 1995 batch IAS officer, as Chairman and Managing Director of Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

Prior to this appointment, Mustafa was Joint Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS) in the Finance Ministry.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment for a period of three years, according to a Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) order.
