Following his brilliant effort vs England in the 5th and final Test in Manchester last month, pacer Mohammed Siraj was on Monday selected as the ICC Player of the Month for August. Siraj had snapped up 3 wickets in the 5th day of the final Test, finishing with 9 scalps, helping India win the match by 6 runs and tie the series 2-2.

“It is a special honour to be named ICC Player of the Month. The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy was a memorable series, and it was one of the most intense contests I have been part of. I am proud that I could contribute with some important spells, especially in the decisive moments. Bowling against a top batting line-up in their home conditions was challenging, but it also brought out the best in me,” said Siraj.

Siraj ended the Anderson Tendulkar trophy as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets from five games. Not only was he able to play all the games, but also kept his pace high through the five Tests and was able to come back and pick up crucial wickets spell after spell.

Ben Stokes, England’s captain, would hail him as a “warrior”, Joe Root would say he is “someone you want on your team”. Root would also observe that Siraj’s stares and verbals are part of a “fake anger”. “He has got this fake anger about him sometimes, which I can see straight through. You can tell he is actually a really nice lad. But he tries incredibly hard. He is a very skilful player,” he says.

Also, Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast was also named the player of the month alongside Siraj with the cricketer winning the award ahead of Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Muneeba Ali and the Netherlands’ seam bowler Iris Zwilling.

Prendergast was named the Player of the Series in a home T20I series, helping win 2-1 against Pakistan. She scored 144 runs and took four wickets in that series and maintained her fine form in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, aggregating 244 runs and finishing with seven wickets in the month of August.

Mohammed Siraj Makes History with Six-Wicket Haul at Edgbaston After 32 Years

Mohammed Siraj scripted history with a stunning display of fast bowling at Edgbaston, claiming 6/70 to bowl out England for 408 in the second Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. His fiery spell handed India a strong 180-run first-innings lead.

With Jasprit Bumrah absent, doubts hovered over India’s bowling attack. But Siraj, supported by Akash Deep’s four wickets, kept India firmly in control. This came despite a massive 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith.

Siraj dismissed key English batters, including Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes. He then ran through the tail, removing Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir.

This six-wicket haul is the first by a visiting pacer at Edgbaston since 1993. It is also the third-best performance by an overseas fast bowler at the venue.

At 31, Siraj joins an elite group of Indian pacers with five-wicket hauls in England. The others are Amar Singh, Chetan Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Ishant Sharma. This is his fourth five-for in Tests and his best performance in England.

Despite the long stand from Brook and Smith, India’s pace attack—led by Siraj—remained disciplined and aggressive. They kept the pressure on England and are now in a strong position to level the series.

India will aim to carry this momentum forward as the match enters a crucial phase.

Siraj’s brilliance echoes his historic Asia Cup 2023 performance—where he delivered one of the finest spells in a tournament final. His rise now mirrors the legacy of legends like Chaminda Vaas and Anil Kumble.

Siraj has firmly established himself as India’s new pace spearhead.

Mohd Siraj 1st India debutant to pick 5 wickets in a Test in 7 years

Hyderabad, TELANGANA :

Mohammed Shami, who Siraj replaced in this Test, was the last India bowler to take at least five wickets in a debut Test

Melbourne:

Mohammed Siraj became the first debutant for India in seven years to pick five wickets in a Test match when he finished the second Test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a haul of five wickets for 77 runs in 36.3 overs.

Siraj got the wicket of Cameron Green in both the innings while he had Marnus Labuschagne (in first innings) and Travis Head and Nathan Lyon (in second innings).

Mohammed Shami, who Siraj replaced in this Test, was the last India bowler to take at least five wickets in a debut Test when he got a nine-wicket haul against West Indies in Kolkata in November, 2013.

Off-spinner R Ashwin, who is also playing the ongoing second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, also took over five wickets in a Test on debut back in November, 2011 against West Indies in Delhi. He got a nine-wicket haul.

On Monday, after the third day’s play, Siraj had said that he focused on bowling dot balls and maiden overs and not try anything different.

He also gave credit to senior bowler Jasprit Bumrah for encouraging him throughout his debut Test.

“With a senior around, the junior always finds help. After every ball, he (Bumrah) was coming to me and giving me confidence, telling me to focus on every ball and be easy. He asked me to not give anything away and kept telling me, ‘you are doing good, have patience and keep bowling well’. That is what he told me,” said Siraj after Monday’s play.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Mohammed Siraj returned to the line-up and made a telling difference with the ball in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Siraj dismissed Rahul Tripathi (1) and Nitish Rana (0) off successive deliveries in his first over before accounting for Tom Banton (10) in his second. At the end of the PowerPlay, his figures read 3-2-2-3 as KKR was left reeling at 17/4.

The 26-year-old became the first bowler to bowl two maidens in an IPL game. He finished with figures of 4-2-8-3.

Siraj made a comeback into the team after he had been hit for 44 runs (2 fours, 4 sixes) in his three overs in the defeat to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Sharjah last week. He was then dropped for the next game against Rajasthan Royals.

Before the match against KKR, the Hyderabad cricketer had three wickets in as many outings this season.

On Siraj’s inclusion in place of Shahbaz Ahmed, RCB director of cricket operations Mike Hesson said, “We thought Siraj was a good option on this surface. We thought he could get a wicket or two with the new ball but not three.”

New Delhi:

You call it a fairytale rise up the Indian ranks claiming it to be a classic rags-to-riches story, or praise his bowling prowess as he honed it little by little, but Mohammed Siraj’s run from an absolute nobody to a call-up for the T20I series against New Zealand has created quite a stir in Indian cricketing fraternity.

It was only in late Monday afternoon that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 16-member squad for the three-match T20I series against a touring New Zealand side. Much to the surprise of many, Siraj and Shreyas Iyer – two uncapped players were named in the squad for the shortest format of the game.

The 23-year-old speedster from Hyderabad, born to an auto rickshaw driver, came to limelight with his scintillating performance in the 10th season of Indian Premier League (IPL). And it was not just after the Hyderabad-based franchise roped in the pacer with a whopping INR 2.6 crore, but also because he lived up to the expectations finishing off the campaign with 10 wickets in six matches. Well, it did include a stunning four-fer against Gujarat Lions that helped the former champions qualify for the playoffs. But that is not where it had all started.

It was at the age of seven that Siraj fell in love with the Gentlemen’s game. Back then, it was mere bunking classes to play tennis-ball cricket. Later in 2015, he picked up the red ball and bagged quite a few five-wicket hauls. He soon got a call-up for Hyderabad’s Under-23 side and then the senior team and finally for Ranji. In the 2016-17 season, the pacer scalped 41 wickets at an average of 18.92 as he became the third-highest wicket-taker in the campiagn after Shahbaz Nadeem and Anupam Sanklecha. And what followed next was a maiden IPL season.

He then recieved a call for the India A series against South Africa where he continued with his brilliancy picking up 10 wickets. Of late, he played against New Zealand A where he picked up four wickets in three matches. Overall, he has played 16 T20 matches, picking up 26 wickets at an average of 18.73.

“I knew that some time in future I will get a call-up but did not expect it this soon. I can’t tell you how happy I am. When I told my parents, they were speechless. It’s a dream come true,” said Siraj in an interview to PTI.

“Whatever I am today is primarily because of Ranji Trophy performance. My 40-odd wickets last season gave me the confidence. There’s nothing like getting wickets in first- class cricket. I was picked for Rest of India after that and because of Ranji Trophy, I got the IPL deal. So 60 per cent credit for this call-up is performance in first-class cricket,” he added. “I can’t tell you how much I am indebted to Bharath Arun sir. He is a brilliant coach. Last year, he was with the Hyderabad team and for the first time, I got an insight to the kind of variations needed to survive at the highest level.”
