With no state support, Hyderabad’s MMA prodigy struggles

Early November came as a huge surprise and a source of anxiety for Shaik Khalid , the coach of Mahboob Khan and the founder of Telangana Association of Mixed Martial Arts (TAMMA) as he received Mahboob’s selection letter from MMA India.

India’s first and only international Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion, Mahboob Khan, has earned his selection for another world championship, but the lack of financial support has become a major roadblock for the athlete to participate in it.

The letter read, “This is to confirm that Mr. Mohammed Mahboob Khan from Telangana is selected under MMA India to represent India at upcoming IMMAF (International MMA Federation)-WMMAA (World MMA Association) Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Champion 2021 from Jan 24-29 at Abu Dhabi.”

However, just like every time, Shaik Khalid would again have to over-burden himself with training his athlete as well as run around to find sponsorship for him.

Last time, in the Bahrain IMMAF world Championship, when Mahboob became India’s first and only world champion, Shaik Khalid said that the whole team including himself contributed and raised about 2 lakh so that Mahboob can fight.

“Because MMA is a non-Olympic sport, there is no financial support from the government either,” Khalid remarked.

Furthermore, the letter from MMA India stated that the total cost of the participation, including registration, travel, visa and stay would be approximately 1.80 lakhs. The letter added, “This event is the highest level of opportunity for Armature MMA athlete and would bring lot of pride to our country and help athletes to move up to the next level of career. Due to the fact that Mr. Mohammed Mahboob Khan has to support all the travelling expenses on his own, we would encourage sponsorship from you and contribute towards the development of the Sport in India.”

The little known Hyderabadi beast from Dabilpura who has created history by becoming the first and only international MMA champion in 2018 comes from humble beginnings.

Mahboob Khan used to be a bodybuilder who worked in a clothing shop and used to drive a taxi. He told Siasat.com that in 2016 his friend introduced him to Khalid and they subsequently went to watch a state championship. “I got interested in the sport and joined… I never thought I would participate in tournaments but as we trained I gained more confidence and later… Shaik Khalid made me play nationals,” the 23-year-old said.

There was a point when Mahboob said he was not getting enough time to train, and as Sheik Khalid saw potential in him, he asked Mahboob if he would quit his jobs and stay with him. “He also offered to give me a salary,” Mahboob added.

With five years of amateur fighting experience, Mahboob Khan, who now holds a record of 34 wins, has three straw-weight and four flyweight National gold medals, one international gold medal and has been the five-time fight-night (semi-pro) champion.

Bengaluru FC midfielder Danish Farooq Bhat has signed a 3.5-year deal with Kerala Blasters, Khel Now can confirm. “Earlier, the player agreed to sign a three-year pre-contract with Kerala Blasters, but injury concerns forced the club to cash out Danish Farooq before his contract expired with Bengaluru FC,” a source close to the development told Khel Now.

The source added, “Kerala Blasters have paid approximately 25 lakhs transfer fee to Bengaluru FC to obtain his service. Danish will earn approximately 90 Lakhs* per year as his salary.”

About the Player

Danish Farooq was born on May 9, 1996, in Jammu & Kashmir. He started his playing career at a very young age for a local team called Chinar Valley. At the age of 13, Danish joined the J&K Bank Football Academy where he perfected his game as a youngster. Danish had major success with this club as he went on to win 12 league titles for them.

In 2015, Danish signed a professional contract with Lonestar Kashmir and played for them in the 2015-16 I-League 2nd division. He helped his team to reach the final round, however, the team fell short and failed to qualify for the I-League.

Danish Farooq rose to fame in the latter half of 2016 when he signed for Real Kashmir. He helped the Snow Leopards to secure the championship of the 2017-18 I-League 2nd division and was also the joint top-scorer of the team with four goals. He helped his team to qualify for the I-League during his tenure.

In 2021, Danish Farooq made a big step in his career by joining Bengaluru FC as a free agent. He had instant success with the Blues and soon became a key player in their midfield. Danish has scored four goals and assisted twice for the Blues in the ISL.

Danish Farooq is a versatile player who can handle multiple positions on the ground. He can be deployed as a midfielder and winger at the same time. His versatility will certainly help Kerala Blasters who wished to add more depth to the squad.

Kerala Blasters in ISL 2022-23

Kerala Blasters are having a dream run under Serbian head coach Ivan Vukamanovic. The club was able to continue the heroics from the previous season and are currently doing very well. They’re currently a team who has a higher probability of qualifying for the playoffs. Even with so many outgoings before the start of the season, KBFC managed to top the game on several occasions.

This season has witnessed the rise of Nihal Sudeesh, Bryce Miranda, and Saurav Mandal among the Indian players. Their forward Dimitrios Diamantakos is currently in top form as he continues to score screamers for the side. The 2022-23 ISL season also witnessed the transfer of Puitea to ATK Mohun Bagan for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Khelo India Youth Games: Bushra Khan stays calm to claim gold in women’s 3000m race

The ongoing Khelo India Youth Games has produced another inspirational and feel-good story. Faith is a great healer, and the adage proved true yet again. Grief-stricken middle-distance runner from Madhya Pradesh, Bushra Khan, nearly quit running last May after her father died in a freak incident.

However, athletics coach SK Prasad encouraged her to move forward in life and gradually build a running tempo.

Bushra Khan’s confidence grew and she clinched gold in the women’s 3,000m race at the Khelo India Youth Games being held in Bhopal, on Saturday, 4 January.

The promising middle-distance runner from Sehore in Madhya Pradesh was all praise for her coach in the post-race interaction.

“I owe it all to my coach, without his support, I couldn’t have clocked a personal best of 10.04.29 seconds in the 3,000m race,” Bushra said.


Bushra Khan played a waiting game in the race. She stayed behind the leading group and surged ahead when there were around 200 meters left to emerge victorious. The youngster had earlier finished second in the 1500m event of the Khelo India Youth Games on Friday.

“In 1500m, I pushed from the finish line too early and paid the prize,” the Madhya Pradesh runner said.

Bushra had to overcome grief to triumph at Khelo India Youth Games

The memories of her late father, who died last year in a freak accident, flashed through her mind after the race. Bushra Khan’s father was the only bread-winner in the family. Being the eldest in the family, she was close to her father, the coach said.

“Her (Bushra’s) father was a daily wage worker in a chemical factory in Sehore and died due to a blast in the factory,” the coach added.

That was eight months ago, but the unfortunate incident still haunts the young athlete.

“I wish my father would have been alive to see me winning,” Bushra said sobbingly.

However, Bushra’s mother and two younger sisters were there at the stadium to see her sweat around the track and get applauded for her hard work.

Six summers ago, Bushra Khan joined the state government-run athletics academy in Bhopal. The gold-winning performance on Saturday, the coach said, will act as a platform to achieve good results in the coming months.

“Despite hardship, she has given a good account of herself. I am confident she will break the 10-minute barrier by May to earn a place in the national team for the Asian Junior Athletics Championships,” the coach added.

Bushra Khan said she has a passion for distance running and is ready to make sacrifices to achieve the targets set by her coach.

“I hope I will not disappoint my coach and all those who supported me during challenging situation in my life,” Bushra added.

The story of this budding talent from Madhya Pradesh is another example of how the Khelo India Youth Games are nurturing talent.

India’s Mohammed Hussamuddin finished his IBA World Boxing Championships campaign in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with a bronze medal on Friday.

India’s Mohammed Hussamuddin finished his IBA World Boxing Championships campaign in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with a bronze medal on Friday.

Hussamuddin was forced to give a walkover to Horta Rodriguez Del-Rey of Cuba in the 54-57kg semifinals due to a knee injury sustained during his quarterfinal bout, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said in a tweet.

Against a taller opponent landing blows from a long range, the Indian southpaw connected a few headshots to claim the first round 3-2.

Hussamuddim relied on his ring craft to stay marginally ahead in the second period and matched the Bulgarian in the physical third round, which witnessed both going all out, to emerge triumphant.

The Haryana boxer defeated Russia’s Eduard Savvin in the pre-quarters.

Hailing from a family of boxers, Mohammed Hussamuddin is the youngest of six brothers, four of whom are seriously entrenched in the sport. Hussamuddin, whose role model is Vasyl Lomachenko, two-time Olympic Champion, was afraid to don the gloves until his father and coach, Mohammad Shamsuddin, got him to shed that fear and trained him at the Collectorate grounds in Nizamabad, north Telangana.

Commonwealth Games champion Hussamuddin had upset fifth-seeded Bulgarian Javier Ibanez Diaz 4-3, via bout review, in a closely-contested fight in the quarterfinals.

The 29-year-old went on to outshine his siblings and established himself in the state-level competitions before moving on to the national scene, making his debut in the 2009 junior Nationals at Aurangabad, claiming bronze. He turned it into gold in his debut at the senior nationals.

The boxer’s potential was spotted early and in 2011, he was sent to a fortnight-long stint of training and competition to Havana, Cuba, before participating in the 2012 Tammer Tournament in Finland and later in the Youth World Championship in Yerevan, Armenia.

His barren-run on the international stage ended with bronze at the 2015 Military World Games. Since then, he has been on the up and today he has evolved into one of the finest boxers in the country in his weight category.

With a bronze in Commonwealth Games 2018 and a gold in the Chemistry Cup, Hussamuddin continued to shine and bag silver at the Gee Bee Boxing Tournament in 2019. He won silver at the Boxam International in march 2021 and finished 2022 with bronze medal at CWG and Asian Championships.

Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida clinched the gold medal clocking a season-best score of 16.31m in the Mikio Oda Memorial Athletics meet in Hiroshima, Japan. The 27-year-old Keralite clocked his season-best score twice in the fifth and sixth attempts and notched up a good performance in the maiden foreign meet of the season.

Abdulla crossed the 16m mark five times in seven attempts overall in the Mikio Oda Memorial. Earlier this year, he claimed the third spot in two domestic meets by clocking 15.93m and 15.77m (Indian Open Jumps and Indian Grand Prix). The Keralite, after below-average performances in the domestic meet this year, has shown good improvement by constantly crossing the 16m mark in Japan.

Last year, he also won the silver medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 with a result of 17.02m, just 0.1m behind the gold medal mark. Compatriot Eldhose Paul clinched the gold medal at CWG 2022 by clocking 17.03m.

The 2022 season was one of the most successful ones for the Keralite. He crossed the 17m mark thrice and recorded his personal best mark of 17.19m in the Indian Grand Prix held in Bhubaneshwar. The 27-year-old also qualified for the World Athletic Championships 2022, but put in a below-average performance (best score-16.45m).

The qualification mark for World Athletics Championships 2023 stands at 17.20m. Abdulla needs to get back to his original form ahead of the all-important Senior Federation Cup and the National Inter-States Meet, to secure automatic qualification for the Worlds.

Among the other Indian Triple Jumpers, Praveen Chitravel came close to qualifying for the World Championships as he notched up a personal best score of 17.17m in the Indian Open Jumps and won the silver medal in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships recently.

Meanwhile, Eldhose Paul will soon be in action alongside Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra in the Doha Diamond League, starting May 5, 2023.

Syed Abdul Rahim’s role in golden era of Indian football immortalized in biopic Maidaan

In an era of Indians recognizing their unsung heroes and reviving their memories, a biopic on Syed Abdul Rahim, India’s most successful football coach, is all set to be released on June 23.

The teaser of the film Maidaan featuring Ajay Devgn as the legendary coach of the Indian national football team was released by Zee Films recently. It has already crossed 35 million views of YouTube in five days.

Under Syed Abdul Rahim’s guidance, the Indian team was rated as one of the most powerful teams in the sport, and the period – 1952-1962 turned out to be the golden period of Indian football.

The teaser opens with the resounding music of A R Rahman and the powerful image of the Indians playing Yugoslavia (a country now spilt into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia) in heavy rain.

It seems the bare-footed Indians lost the match against Yugoslavia as Rahim (Ajay Devgn) is shown in tears in the teaser. The film is produced by Bonny Kapoor.

According to reports, from his early days, this Hyderabad-born Rahim spotted talented boys on the football fields of Hyderabad and trained them to cobble up an Indian team.

With him as the coach of the national team, India finished fourth in the Melbourne Olympics and won the gold medal in the Asian Games of 1962 beating Japan and Korea.

Although Rahim is credited for ushering in the Golden Era of Indian football, he passed away unsung. He was never conferred with any award and many say he was too focused on coaching and never mingled with leaders or influencers to get noticed by them.

Maidaan’s teaser is a 90-second clip that tells the story of a fight against the odds by Rahim and his Indian team. The trailer opens with monochrome shots from the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki (Finland). India fared badly on that occasion and lost 10-1 to Yugoslavia in the preliminary round.

The resounding defeat did not discourage Rahim; instead, it brought out his fighting spirit.

He studied the training methods used by the European teams. Rahim studied their training and tactics and then modified the same to suit Indian conditions. He realized that Indian players had less physical stamina and there was no point copying the European methodology.

Rahim adapted the European ways to suit the Indians and it worked wonders. It must have taken Rahim’s meticulous planning and precision in training the Indians that helped the team perform great in the next Olympic Games in 1956 when India defeated Australia

On 1st December 1956, India stunned the world with the team’s excellent performance and defeating host Australia 4-2. Ace striker Neville D’Souza scored a hat trick and Krishnaswamy scored one goal.

This match is an abiding memory of the glorious era of Indian football.

Today, Indian football fans are disappointed to see Australia plays in the final phase of the FIFA World Cup while India has dropped to the bottom. Indian team employs expensive foreign coaches and support staff but the results are not commensurate with the efforts and expenses.

Sources said the filmmakers had consulted the Football legend’s son S.S. Hakim who died in 2021. Hakim was an Air Force officer who had played in the Olympics and was a highly qualified coach and referee too.

In the film, Ajay Devgn speaks the Hyderabadi (Deccani) version of Urdu. After many delays due to the pandemic and other reasons, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on 23rd June 2023.

Hockey player offers ‘Sehri and Iftar’ for fasting Muslims in Raipur hospitals

During the ongoing sacred month of Ramadan, when Muslims engage in observing fast, a former well-known hockey player devotes his time with his small team of youths to reach out to those who keep fast staying in hospitals while enduring challenging or difficult situations and provide them with Sehri (before sunrise meal) and Iftar (after sunset food) daily.

Nauman Akram’s Raipur-based welfare group believes that a large segment of the Muslim population may not be blessed with enough food and provision since they usually have little except to work hard to make ends meet during Ramadan.

Akram, also a former national hockey umpire, has chosen hospitals and passenger terminals to extend help by offering food, water and juices as a moral responsibility to the fasting people who are away from their homes and essentially need the support that brings them some solace during the pious month.

“We visit big hospitals like Raipur AIIMS, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar hospitals among others to distribute small food bags among the patients and their fasting families. We also interact with Muslim travellers. The food packets are prepared by us daily. The distressed relatives of patients or the travellers in buses or elsewhere are already in demanding situations. So, any small support raises their morale and brings them some comfort”, he said. 

Akram also solicits assistance from various Muslim groups through social media to lend a helping hand for his noble task. “Sehri particularly remains much in demand as finding the food post-midnight is really a major problem for the fasting people in hospitals or any passenger. So we prepare and distribute it by 3 am”, he added.

The menu of Sehri usually comprised chapatis, egg curry or bhurji, biryani and fruits. Similarly, iftar food contains dates, fruits, samosa, baked items and juices among others. Religious scholars have appreciated the service citing that the month of Ramadan is also about compassion for others, caring for the needy and sharing with empathy.

The 60th National Roller Skating Championships 2022-23 was held at Bengaluru from December 11 to 22.

10 skaters from Hi-Flyers Skating Club had qualified for the Nationals. 4 skaters won 6 Golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronze.

Arpita Nishanth Shet gets 1 Gold and 1 Silver in Rink 500+D and Road 1 lap.


Muhammad Shamil Arshad gets 1 Gold and 1 Silver in Rink 500+D and Road 1 lap.

Youth makes it to national shooting championship after three-month training by father

Bengaluru:

Trained by his father in just three months, Mohammed Rayan Baig has made it big in a national-level shooting championship by bagging a gold medal.

Now, all eyes are set on the young engineering graduate, who will be representing the state in the All India shooting event, held by the National Rifle Association of India from the first week of November at Thiruvananthapuram.

Baig qualified for this national event as he won a gold medal in the (A-01) Small Bore Free Rifle Prone (NR) Championship 50M Men Individual event at the 31 All India GV Mavalankar Shooting Championship in Asansol at West Bengal in the second week of this month.

He secured 581 out of 600 points in the event.  

What is interesting is that Baig who resides in Frazer Town was trained by his father, MN Baig for three months to qualify for the event held in West Bengal.

His father is into agriculture and business and his mother, Shehnaz Baig is a housewife.

“My dad has been shooting for the last 7-8 years. In the 300 metres big bore competition, he has got a renowned shot certificate five times. I have been watching him, waiting for my studies to get over.”

“After I completed engineering, I started to practice at Karnataka State Rifle Association Range and simulation at home,” said Baig, who completed his B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering with 8th Rank with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 9.04 out of 10) at PES University in the city this year.

“I dedicated myself to studies. Once I finished my engineering with a good rank, my next goal was to excel in shooting. I set my goal and got a gold medal in the All India GV Mavalankar Shooting Championship. If I set a goal, I want to achieve it. I have natural talent and was trained by my father and no professional coaching,” Baig told The New Indian Express.  
 
Sharing his views on shooting, he said “I can say that this sport requires a lot of dedication and concentration. But if one spends time practicing, honing their skills, refining their techniques, they can even reach the Olympics.”

“My next target is the event to be held from November 20 to December 6, 2022, at Tiruvananthapuram, where all big shooters will be participating,” he concludes.
