11 athletes from Alva’s Foundation chosen to represent India in World University Games

Mangaluru, KARNATAKA :

All of these athletes represent Mangalore University and are trained under Alva’s Education Foundation’ Sports Adoption Scheme.

Eleven athletes from Alva’s Education Foundation’s Sports Adoption Scheme, representing Mangalore University, have been selected to represent India in the forthcoming World University Games 2025, scheduled to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16 to 27.

Foundation president M. Mohan Alva told reporters in Moodbidri on Wednesday that with the selection, the total number of athletes from the foundation participating in the games has risen to 32. He said the selection was a matter of pride for the institution and the State. The athletes were selected during the trials held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), a deemed-to-be university in Bhubaneswar.

In the men’s category, the selected athletes are Gagan (5,000 meters run), Sachin (20 km walk), Balakrishna (400 meters run) and N. Taufique (decathlon). Those selected in the women’s category are Deekshita Ramakrishna Gowda (400 meters hurdles), Basanti Kumari (half marathon), Manju Yadav (steeplechase), Sindhusree (pole vault), Sakshi Sharma (javelin throw), Jyoti (half marathon) and Shalini (20 km walk).

Dr. Alva said all the selected athletes represent Mangalore University and are trained under Alva’s Sports Adoption Scheme. Each athlete will require a financial outlay of ₹2.5 lakh to participate in the event. While Mangalore University has assured a contribution of ₹75,000 per athlete, the remaining expenses are being borne by the foundation, he added.

‘Kolnad Friends’ organise blood donation camp in memory of Late Safwan Kolnad; 62 units collected

Mulki : 

A public blood donation camp was successfully organised on Sunday in memory of Safwan Kolnad, a 25-year-old youth who tragically passed away on May 10, 2025, due to sudden cardiac arrest in Dubai. The camp was held at Mahila Samudaya Bhavan, located near the Kolnad Government School, and was jointly conducted by Kolnad Friends Kolnad (R) and Blood Helpline Karnataka (R), in collaboration with Wenlock District Hospital, Mangalore.

The event began with a dua and blessings from Sharif Darimi Al-Haitami, Khatib of Shafi Juma Masjid, Kolnad. The program was presided over by Manjunath B.S., Circle Inspector of Mulki Police Station.

Dr. Ayisha Suhana, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Chief Eye Surgeon at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mukka, was the chief guest. In her address, she highlighted the critical importance of blood donation and how a single unit of blood can help save up to three lives. She also explained how regular blood donation contributes to better health by reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and certain cancers, while also controlling cholesterol, blood pressure, and iron levels. She advised donors to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity after donating blood.

As a tribute to the late Safwan Kolnad, Dr. Ayisha Suhana announced that she will perform five free cataract surgeries with premium intraocular lens implantation for underprivileged patients. She has conducted similar charitable surgeries in the past, in association with NGOs including the Naushad Haji Suralpady Memorial Charitable Trust (R).

This was the second blood donation camp organised by Kolnad Friends Kolnad (Reg) Charitable Trust, and a total of 62 units of blood were collected, including 52 male and 10 female donors.

The organisation continues to serve as a ray of hope for underprivileged patients, providing financial assistance for dialysis and cataract surgeries, and also supporting economically weaker students.

During the event, both Manjunath B.S. and Dr. Ayisha Suhana were felicitated by the organisers.

The program concluded with remarks from Yasir Arafat and a vote of thanks delivered by Abbas Ali.

B.M. Basheer’s book ‘Agnipath’ to be released on May 10 in Mangaluru

Senior journalist, storyteller, and news editor of Vartha Bharati, B.M. Basheer, will release his new book titled Agnipath on Saturday, May 10, at a special event to be held in Mangaluru.

The book release programme is being jointly organised by Kavita Prakashan, Mysore, and the Kannada Department of St Aloysius Deemed University. It will take place at 3:30 pm at the Sahodaya Auditorium of the university campus near Bavutagudde.

The book Agnipath, published by Kavita Prakashan Mysore, will be released by noted thinker and columnist Shivasundar.

Senior writer Vasudeva Belle will introduce the work to the audience.

The event will be presided over by renowned author Chandrakala Nandavar. St Aloysius Deemed University Vice Chancellor Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis and Ganesh Amingad from Kavita Prakashan are expected to attend the function, as per the official announcement.

Bearys Institute of Technology hosts BSSF Scholarship Distribution Program

Advocate Shahul Hamid Rehman appointed Additional Advocate General of Karnataka

Advocate Shahul Hamid Rehman has been appointed as the Additional Advocate General of Karnataka.

The appointment was made on the orders of Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, as communicated by Adinarayana, Under Secretary of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Department. 

Advocate Shahul Hamid Rehman, a senior legal professional, is the son of the late K. Abdul Rahman and Nebisa.

He completed his law degree at SDM Law College Mangaluru, and gained experience practicing under former Advocate General B.V. Acharya.

Ace IAS Academy launches UPSC/KPSC batch 2024-25 with inaugural ceremony

Ace IAS Academy inaugurated its UPSC/KPSC Batch 2024-25, with Police Sub-Inspector Mushahid Ahmed, an alumnus from the academy’s first batch, officially launching the program.

The event also saw the relaunch of the academy’s website by the Founder President of Ace Foundation, Saduddin Salihi. The occasion was graced by Abdul Salaam, retired General Manager of KIOCL, as the Guest of Honour.

Following the inauguration, a workshop on “Effective Communication” was conducted by motivational speaker and life coach, Saif Sulthan Syed.
