Three siblings from Bhatkal excel at state-level Karate Championship

Three siblings from Bhatkal, currently studying in Mangaluru, secured top honours at the State-level Karate Championship held in Moodbidri on September 1, 2025 The event was organised by the Shorin-Ryu Karate Association in association with Swami’s Strength Training and MK Ananthraj College of Physical Education.

Ismail Nameer, a 15-year-old student of Huda Islamia School, Mangaluru, won first place in Kumite (fight). 

His younger brother, Hamdan (11 years), a student of Presidency School, Mangaluru, secured first place in Kumite (Fight) and second place in Kata in the under-11 category.

Their sister, Umme Kulsum, also a student of Presidency School, claimed first place in the Fighting category in the under-8 category.

The siblings are children of Nisar Ahmed Ruknuddin and Nada of Bhatkal, who are presently residing in Mangaluru.

11 athletes from Alva’s Foundation chosen to represent India in World University Games

All of these athletes represent Mangalore University and are trained under Alva’s Education Foundation’ Sports Adoption Scheme.

Eleven athletes from Alva’s Education Foundation’s Sports Adoption Scheme, representing Mangalore University, have been selected to represent India in the forthcoming World University Games 2025, scheduled to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16 to 27.

Foundation president M. Mohan Alva told reporters in Moodbidri on Wednesday that with the selection, the total number of athletes from the foundation participating in the games has risen to 32. He said the selection was a matter of pride for the institution and the State. The athletes were selected during the trials held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), a deemed-to-be university in Bhubaneswar.

In the men’s category, the selected athletes are Gagan (5,000 meters run), Sachin (20 km walk), Balakrishna (400 meters run) and N. Taufique (decathlon). Those selected in the women’s category are Deekshita Ramakrishna Gowda (400 meters hurdles), Basanti Kumari (half marathon), Manju Yadav (steeplechase), Sindhusree (pole vault), Sakshi Sharma (javelin throw), Jyoti (half marathon) and Shalini (20 km walk).

Dr. Alva said all the selected athletes represent Mangalore University and are trained under Alva’s Sports Adoption Scheme. Each athlete will require a financial outlay of ₹2.5 lakh to participate in the event. While Mangalore University has assured a contribution of ₹75,000 per athlete, the remaining expenses are being borne by the foundation, he added.

Citizen Convent students shine in sports

Mysuru:

The students of Citizen Convent, Udayagiri, Mysuru, have made remarkable achievements in State-level Sports and Games Competitions 2024-25 and in the Karnataka State Arm Wrestling Championship 2024-25.

The winners who brought laurels to the school are as follows: Mohammed Maweeya Qureshi — Gold Medal in State-level Wrestling held at Kanakapura and qualifying for the National Championship in New Delhi.

Arzan Khan — Bronze Medal in State-level Weightlifting Competition, held at VJEMHS, Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada.

Mohammed Umar — Bronze Medal in 55-60 kg category at the Karnataka State Arm Wrestling Championship 2024-25, held in Mysuru.

Mohammed Huzaifa, Bronze Medal in 75-kg category at State-level Sports & Games contests for School Children 2024-25, conducted by Department of School Education, Karnataka.

Mangaluru student from Bhatkal wins two Bronze Medals at State Karate Selections

Ismail Nameer, a ninth-grade student at Huda Islamic School, Mangaluru, won two bronze medals at the State Karate Selections held at Koramangala Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru, on January 26, 2025.

The event was organized by Akhila Karnataka Sports Karate Organization.

He secured bronze in the 14-15 years below 63kg category and another in the under-21 years below 65kg category. The event had around 650 participants from across Karnataka.

Originally from Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district, Nameer has been living in Mangaluru with his family for the past few years. His school recognized his achievement during its annual day celebrations on Monday with a special award.

In previous competitions, Nameer had won first place in kata and kumite at a national-level event in 2023, organized by Guru Goju Ryu Karate Academy India. He also secured third place at the 24th Asian/International WFSKO Open Karate Championship in Mumbai in 2019. In 2020, he won first place in kata and third in kumite at the 5th National Level Open Karate Championship in Moodbidri.

Three siblings studying in Mangaluru win big at State-Level Karate Championship

Three siblings from Bhatkal, who study in Mangaluru, achieved remarkable success at the state-level Karate Championship organized by the Shorin-Ryu Karate Association in collaboration with Swami’s Strength Training and MK Ananthraj College of Physical Education, held in Moodbidri on August 17, 2024.

Ismail Nameer, a 14-year-old student of Huda Islamia School, Mangaluru, secured first place in the Kumite category and also earned a place in Kata. His outstanding performance led to him being crowned the Grand Champion in the under-17 category.

Hamdan, Nameer’s younger brother and a student at Presidency School, Mangaluru, followed in his brother’s footsteps by winning first place in Kumite and securing a place in Kata.

Their sister, Umme Kulsum, also a student at Presidency School, claimed first place in the Fighting category, adding to the family’s impressive list of achievements.

Nameer, Hamdan, and Umme Kulsum are children of Nisar Ahmed Ruknuddin and Nada who reside in Mangaluru.
