Karnataka Union of Working Journalists’ (KUWJ) announces 2024 annual awards

The Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has announced its annual awards for the year 2024, recognising journalists across various categories.

Vartha Bharati journalists Yogesh Malluru and Abdul Rahiman Talapady are among the awardees. Yogesh Mallur has been selected for the G. Narayanaswamy Award for Best Rural Reporting, while Abdul Rahiman Talapady has been honoured under the Tagadoor Kamalamma Veeregowda Award for reporting on farmers’ livelihoods and distress.

The awards will be presented at the 40th State Journalists’ Conference to be held in Bidar on April 11 and 12, KUWJ state president Shivanand Tagadur and general secretary G.C. Lokesh said in a release.

CM Siddaramaiah quotes senior journalist B.M. Basheer’s poem while presenting budget

In a unique manner, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah quoted lines from a poem by B.M. Basheer, poet and News Editor of Vartha Bharati before the State Legislature on Friday.

Siddaramaiah, who was presenting the state budget for the current year, recited Basheer’s poem before announcing new initiatives on women and child development:

“Mother likes roses
For she knows
How difficult it is
To bloom among thorns”.

B.M. Basheer’s book ‘Agnipath’ to be released on May 10 in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: 

Senior journalist, storyteller, and news editor of Vartha Bharati, B.M. Basheer, will release his new book titled Agnipath on Saturday, May 10, at a special event to be held in Mangaluru.

The book release programme is being jointly organised by Kavita Prakashan, Mysore, and the Kannada Department of St Aloysius Deemed University. It will take place at 3:30 pm at the Sahodaya Auditorium of the university campus near Bavutagudde.

The book Agnipath, published by Kavita Prakashan Mysore, will be released by noted thinker and columnist Shivasundar.

Senior writer Vasudeva Belle will introduce the work to the audience.

The event will be presided over by renowned author Chandrakala Nandavar. St Aloysius Deemed University Vice Chancellor Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis and Ganesh Amingad from Kavita Prakashan are expected to attend the function, as per the official announcement.

Journalists Felicitated at Mujeeb Ali Khan Museum Anniversary in Gulbarga

The Mujeeb Ali Khan Museum Cultural Forum marked its 10th anniversary with a tribute to the journalist Mujeeb Ali Khan and media professionals.

Speakers, including senior journalists and intellectuals, praised Mujeeb Ali Khan’s dedication to ethical journalism and truth-seeking. His contributions to responsible reporting were widely acknowledged.

Several journalists and writers were honored for their work.

The event, presided over by Nazeeruddin, Chief Patron of the Gulbarga Cultural Forum, recognized 40 media professionals, including digital journalists.

Honorees included senior journalists MA Hakim Shakir and Azeezulla Sarmasth. Ayathulla Sarmasth, founder of Gulbarga’s first Urdu channel, received special recognition.

The event, hosted by photojournalist Mujeeb Ali Khan, celebrated Mujeeb Ali Khan’s legacy and the role of media in upholding truth.

The Cognate Editor Gets the Janasadbhawana Award, For Coverage of Ponzi Schemes in Bengaluru

Shaik Zakeer Hussain receives the Janasadbhawana Civil Society Awards, 2018 in journalism.

Bengaluru: 

The Cognate’s founder and editor, Shaik Zakeer Hussain, has been awarded the Janasadbhawana Civil Society Awards, 2018 in the category of journalism for his coverage on fraudulent ‘Halal’ investment companies in Bengaluru.

The awards have been instituted by Bengaluru-based NGO Janasadbhawana, which has been working for the reformation and rehabilitation of undertrial prisoners in the city’s Central Jail in Parappana Agrahara. The awards are designed to promote and recognise notable work in the field of journalism, social activism, and administration. The award was presented to Zakeer by Faiz Akram Pasha, the founder trustee of Janasadbhawana on December 3.

“Zakeer has been recognised for his relentless coverage of fraudulent companies in Bengaluru, who have systematically targeted and looted the Muslim community in the name of religion,” said Faiz Akram Pasha, while presenting the award.

The other recipients of the Janasadbhawana Civil Society Awards, 2018 in the field of journalism were, Vikhar Ahmed Sayeed of the Frontline Magazine, Muneer Ahmed Jami of The Siasat Daily, Shahid Qazi of Zee Salaam, Mohammed Asharaf Ali Rashadi of the Daily Salar, Neyamathulla Hameedi of Rashtriya Sahara, and Ansar Azeez Nadwi of Seedhi Baat.

The Bangalore Press Club has announced the list of recipients of its ‘Press Club Golden Jubilee Award’ and ‘Annual Award,’ recognizing journalists for their outstanding contributions in the field of journalism.

The ‘Golden Jubilee Award’ will be conferred upon popular Journalists Janagere Venkataramaiah, Indudhara Honnapura, Subhash Kevin Rai, G.S. Krishnamurthy, and Dr. Nagesh Basavaraj for their dedicated service to journalism.

In addition, 50 senior journalists have been chosen for the ‘Annual Award,’ including Vartha Bharathi Kannada Daily’s Bengaluru Bureau Chief Prakash C., along with Srikanth Hunasavadi, Yathiraju, Punyavathi H.P., Muhammad Ismail N.A., Raju Malavalli, Anis Nisar Ahmed, Sivakumar Menisakai, among others.

The awards will be distributed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at a ceremony to be held at the Press Club premises on the evening of January 12. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar will also be present for the event, according to R. Sridhar, President of Bangalore Press Club.

Meanwhile, The Bangalore Press Club will also confer the ‘Person of the Year Award’ to Minister of Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil, Energy Minister K.J. George, Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, and Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister K.H. Muniyappa.

Vartha Bharati reporter Ismail Kandakare gets prestigious PaGo award 2024

Vartha Bharati reporter Ismail Kandakare

Vartha Bharati Kodagu District Special Correspondent K.M. Ismail Kandakare has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious PaGo award by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association this year. The award-winning report, titled ‘Give way or give way to death,’ was published in the ‘Vartabharati’ newspaper on April 6, 2023.

The selection committee, comprising Senior Journalist Keshav Kunder and Journalism Lecturer Guruprasad T.N., chose Kandakare’s report for its quality and impact. The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 10,001 along with a souvenir.

Kandakare, who holds a certificate course in Diploma in Journalism from Karnataka Open University, has previously been recognized for his journalistic contributions. He has received the Best Sports Reporting Award from both the Kodagu District Working Journalist Association and the Kushalanagar Taluk Working Journalist Association. Additionally, Kandakare’s debut work, ‘Mariam,’ was published in 2021.

Apart from his journalistic endeavors, Kandakare is also involved in football, serving as both a player and coach. He currently works as a referee for the Karnataka State Football Association.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 9 at 11 AM at the Mangalore Press Club. Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof. P L Dharma will present the award, while senior journalist Chidambara Baikampadi will deliver a speech as the guest speaker. The event will be presided over by Srinivas Naik Indaje, the president of DK District Working Journalists’ Association, with Jitendra Kundeshwar, the general secretary of the association, coordinating the proceedings.
