Delhi boxer Md Azahar was crowned the WBC India champion in the super featherweight division after registering a unanimous win over Dharamvir Singh.
The judges scored the fight 79-72, 76-75 and 79-72 in Azahar’s favour after 32 minutes of boxing on Sunday night.
The 25-year-old Azahar lost the first round on all three judges’ cards but went on to win the next seven rounds convincingly.
Azhar, proved to be the better technical fighter before a partisan crowd. He now has a record of five wins and as many losses with four knockouts to his name.
“I was comfortable, just sticking to doing what I do best,” Azahar said.
“The game plan was to hit and not get hit. I fought a good smart fight. He couldn’t hit me with any of his best shots.” Dharamvir, on the other hand, has a record of seven wins and four losses. His previous loss had come over three years ago before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an exciting four round cruiserweight contest, Jaskaran Singh from Punjab won a points decision over debutante compatriot Harsamardeep Singh.
Middleweight Shiva won a close six round bout against Karanjeet Singh.
Shiva was making a comeback after two years and looked rusty in the early rounds. Karanjeet, despite his record of four losses, looked comfortable and even took the second and third rounds. But Shiva, hung on. The final scores were 58-56, 58-56, 58-56.

CP Rizwan moved to the UAE in 2014 after not getting a Ranji Trophy game. Will be special if we get to play against India, he says.
From not being able to get a game for his state in the Ranji Trophy to leading a national team, Rizwan’s cricketing fortunes have changed for the better.
CP Rizwan’s cricket career didn’t really take off and the electrical engineer from Kerala, like many from his state, migrated to the gulf after landing a job in Sharjah.
Eight years later, the 34-year-old has made it big – on the field. On Thursday, the Emirates Cricket Board named Rizwan the skipper for the Asia Cup qualifiers. If Rizwan’s United Arab Emirates (UAE) win the qualifiers, they will be in the same group as heavyweights India and Pakistan.
“It will definitely be special if we qualify and get to play against India. But we just want to focus on one step at a time,” Rizwan told The Indian Express The UAE, Kuwait, Hong Kong and Singapore will be fighting for the one spot available in the group stage.

Rizwan, leg-spinner turned batsman, hails from Thalassery, a cricket hub with a history that dates back to the British Raj. He made a name for himself in age-group cricket and represented Kerala in U-19 and U-23 levels. He also toured South Africa with a Kerala team that included the likes of Sanju Samson. But he could not progress further because he took a break from the sport to complete his engineering degree. He tried to make a comeback after completing his studies but was not able to replicate his age-group success at the senior level. He was named in the Ranji Trophy squad but remained on the bench.
Migrating to the UAE for a job also gave Rizwan’s cricket career a new lease of life, and it has reached new heights now. On Sunday, he walked out to lead the UAE against Kuwait in their first qualifier game.
Last year, Rizwan scored his first international century (109) in an ODI against Ireland when the team was under pressure at 51 for 3. He added 184 runs for the fourth wicket along with Muhammad Usman. The two centurions helped the UAE chase down 270 with six wickets in hand and an over to spare.
“I am happy and honoured to lead the UAE national team. We have been doing well in T20 tournaments. Our players play a lot of T20 games here in the domestic circuit also. But having said that, we have to execute the skills in the right way on the given day,” Rizwan said.
In former India all-rounder Robin Singh, the UAE have an experienced coach to guide their newly-appointed skipper.
“We have been working really hard under coach Robin Singh. He is a person with a great work ethic and that quality has rubbed on to the players also. We have been training well and hopefully, everything will fall into place,” Rizwan, who has played 29 ODIs and seven T20Is for UAE, said.
The electrical engineer, who graduated from Cochin University of Science and Technology, had an opportunity to return home when he got a job with the postal department but he decided against moving back.
His performances in the domestic matches in UAE for teams like Yogi Group, Bukhatir XI and Interface, eventually opened the doors to the UAE national team. After fulfilling the requirement of residing in the UAE for four years, Rizwan made his debut for his adopted country in an ODI against Nepal in January 2019.
“Yes, it could be said that my decision (to stay in the UAE) has been vindicated. I just want to say thanks to all the coaches, friends, family and relatives and the almighty who helped me in this journey,” said Rizwan.
Biju George, the former India women’s fielding coach, has seen Rizwan from his under-23 days for Kerala.
“Rizwan is a fully dedicated player. He is a confident and street-smart player, I think, he can be an asset to the UAE team as their captain,” George said.
The UAE opted for split captaincy and Ahmed Raza, who was the captain in all formats, now leads the team in ODIs.

Md Samrul Zubar of team ‘Race’ists’ Hyderabad won the Race-2 of Stock upto 165cc category of the Madras International Circuit, hosted by MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship in Chennai on Sunday.
Zubair had to start the race from the 21st position followed by a crash in Race-1. He started the race with a fantastic launch of the line and displayed phenomenal composure till the end of the race without any miscalculated moves.
“I started the race from 21st position and had only one thing in my mind, to win the race. I determined myself to be patient without losing my nerve and keep gaining positions. I had an extremely tough fight with Sarvesh and Kayan of team Sparks Racing and Aldrin from Chennai. I made sure my every overtake was precise and clean so that I could finish the race firmly in first position,” Zubair said.
Another racer from Hyderabad, Rahil Shetty of team Gusto Racing India secured second and first positions in the Race-1 and Race-2 of the Petronas TVS One Make Apache RR310 Open category respectively. He managed to finish in fifth in the Race-2 of Pro-stock 301-400cc category making it the only KTM machine to finish in top five.
Janagaon’s racer Rajender Beedani of team Idemitsu Honda Racing India finished second in the Race-2 of Honda One Make CBR 150 NSF category. He gave his best despite the weight disadvantage he has compared to the fellow riders and made sure to stay put in the fight without losing his composure.

India’s Mohammed Ibrahim secured his place in the final of the first-ever Sim Racing World Cup by finishing second in the Asian Continental Qualifiers.
Ibrahim ended the race impressively with a lap time of 1:33.575 behind Thailand’s Thanathip Tanalapanan, who grabbed the top position after completing the race in 1:33.561.
India’s other participating driver, Davlish Singh, on the other hand, secured the sixth position with a lap time of 1:34.026 at the Qualifiers which saw the participation of 14 top drivers from across Asia, competing for two available spots in the final.
Both Ibrahim and Davlish had won the NESC22 (Simracing), the Indian National Qualifiers which were held in a hybrid mode at Esports Federation of India (ESFI)’s multiplex partner INOX’s Megaplex, Malad, Mumbai.
“Since my childhood, I have been fascinated with racing cars, which developed into a passion for motorsports. It is a surreal feeling to qualify for the grand final of the SRWC. I feel glad to have carried the momentum in the qualifiers after winning the NESC and hope to do so in Monaco as well. It is going to be a challenging experience to compete with the best sim racing drivers from all over the world.” said the jubilant Ibrahim, who already has titles of the Isolation E Championship, McLaren Logitech G Challenge, US F4 Kcr Championship and Ultimate E Championship to his name.
“I will be working on a few minor things to improve my gameplay and perform at the highest level to make my country proud in the finals. Racing is my goal and vision, wish to excel in both Sim as well as on Real Motorsports, and always look for opportunities and support.” said the jubilant Ibrahim, who already has titles of the Isolation E Championship, McLaren Logitech G Challenge, US F4 Kcr Championship and Ultimate E Championship to his name,” he added.
Interestingly, Ibrahim’s finish was also the fifth fastest, globally. Apart from Tanalapanan, only David Toth of Hungary (1:33.197), Slovenia’s Jernej Simonic (1:33.329) and Spain’s Pedro Sanchez (1:33.336), who qualified from the European continent, recorded less time than Ibrahim.
The Continental Qualifiers saw drivers from 39 countries, divided into 5 continents. The final will take place in Monaco from October 23 to 24 as Ibrahim among 12 top drivers will fight for the title.

The Indian women’s hockey team beat defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in a shootout to win the bronze medal and finish its campaign at the Commonwealth Games on a high note here on Sunday.
Leading 1-0, India conceded a penalty corner with less than 30 seconds to go for the final hooter, as the match went into a shootout after Olivia Merry’s equaliser.
India though held their nerves in the shootout to emerge winners.
Coming off their heartbreaking loss to Australia in a controversial semifinal, India showed the intent to wrap up their campaign with a win and earn a podium finish.
Salima Tete’s goal gave the Indian women’s hockey team the lead and they led 1-0 at halftime, paving the way for an entertaining second half.
Neha Goyal almost doubled the lead after the break, but good defending by New Zealand prevented the Indians from consolidating their position.
New Zealand has had to do a lot of defending and they’ve done quite well to remain disciplined until that Tete’s goal.

Indian pugilist Mohammed Hussamuddin claimed the bronze medal in the Men’s 57kg Featherweight category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday.
The 28-year-old suffered a 4-1 defeat against Ghana’s Joseph Commey men’s featherweight category semi-finals bout. With this medal, he became India’s 13 bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Hussamuddin also won the bronze medal at Gold Coast 2018, making this his second bronze in a row at the CWG.
Earlier, Jaismine Lamboriya clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 60 kg Lightweight category after losing to England’s Gemma Paige at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday.
The English boxer won the match as a split decision worked in the Brit’s favour, to seal her slot in the final of the event with a 3-2 win over the Indian.

Nikhat Zareen rounded off a hat-trick of boxing golds for India on Sunday as she joined Nitu Ghanghas and Amit Panghal on the top step of the boxing podium at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.
The reigning world champion secured a unanimous victory against Northern Ireland’s Carly MC Naul in the women’s 50 kg category to bring India’s 17th gold and 48th medal of the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Both boxers settled in the match in their own time. Nikhat won the first round 5-0, setting it up with a left hook, coupled with a set of powerful punches. MC Naul couldn’t match Nikhat as the Indian pugilist aggressively went on the attack. MC Naul began the second round aggressively with both exchanging punches. With 50 seconds to go, Nikhat allowed her opponent to go after her before countering with ease.
In the third round, a desperate MC Naul decided to have another go at Nikhat. Aware of her lead after two rounds, Nikhat took her time and raised her hands in victory as the final bell rang.
Nikhat began her Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign with a unanimous win against Mozambique’s Helena Ismael Bagao in the round of 16. She followed it up with another 5-0 victory in the second round. In the third, Nikhat’s dominance forced the referee into a stoppage.
In the quarterfinal, Nikhat saw out Helen Jones of Wales, winning the first round 5-0. In the second round, Nikhat also scored a 5-0 win. Jones landed a few good punches in the third round but Nikhat retaliated strongly to storm into the semi-finals.
Nikhat then outpunched England’s Savannah Alfia Stubley in the semi-final. Amid huge support for her opponent, Nikhat won all three rounds with perfect scores to advance to the finals with a 5-0 victory.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed Nikhat’s gold-winning exploits, writing on Twitter: “Nikhat Zareen is India’s pride. She is a world class athlete who is admired for her skills. I congratulate her on winning a Gold medal at the CWG. Excelling in various tournaments, she has shown great consistency. Best wishes for her future endeavours.”
Earlier in the day, Nitu Ghanghas bagged gold in the women’s 48 kg category. Amit Panghal then followed it with a gold in the men’s 51 kg category.

Jah-Nhal Perinchief of Bermuda won the bronze medal with his best jump of 16.92m.
India’s Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker won the gold and the silver medals for India in the men’s triple jump at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday.
This was the first time two athletes from the country got podium finishes in the event.
Paul’s best effort of 17.03m (wind assistance +3.1) was produced in his third attempt. It was also his personal best. He became the first athlete to cross the 17m mark in the event and earned the top position for himself.
On the other hand, Aboobacker was not behind much as he finished at 17.02m (wind assistance +1.2), which he managed in his fifth attempt.
Jah-Nhal Perinchief of Bermuda won the bronze medal with his best jump of 16.92m.
Another Indian who competed in the final was Praveen Chithravel. He finished at the fourth position with his best effort of 16.89m and missed the bronze medal by a difference of just 0.03m.
India has won four triple jump medals in the past editions. Mohinder Singh Gill won a bronze and a silver in the 1970 and 1974 editions while Renjith Maheswary and Arpinder Singh finished third in the 2010 and 2014 editions.
In the World Athletics Championships held in July, Paul had become the first Indian to qualify for the triple jump final after finishing 12th overall in the qualification round. He ended at the ninth position in the men’s triple jump final with the best effort of 16.79m.
Earlier in the day, boxers Amit Panghal and Nitu Ghanghas won gold medals, making Paul’s medal the third gold of the day.

Shabnam Khatoon has been felicitated as best athlete of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) on Friday. Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, presented a cash award in recognition of her all round performance in sports events held recently during Jashn-e-Baharan, an annual event.
Shabnam, a student of B.Tech III Year, emerged as the fastest running girl of MANUU winning both 100 and 200 meter sprints. She also bagged first place in 50 kgs weight lifting event and led the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology girls’ Kabbadi team to the title.
Prof. Ainul Hasan lauded her performance and announced special coaching facility particularly for girl students at MANUU. He also felicitated Dr. A Kaleemulla, Deputy Director, Directorate of Physical Education & Sports for efficiently organizing the sports competitions.
Prof. Mohammed Abdul Azeem, Proctor, and Chairman Sports Committee informed that MANUU has availed the services of well known badminton coach Mr. Ziaur Rahman for the students. Mr. Muzaffar Ali is the football coach.

Darshna Rathore had a chance to fight for gold but missed the last two birds and thus had to settle for the bronze.
Olympian and World Cup gold medallist Mairaj Ahmad Khan asserted his class yet again as he accelerated to a smart finish in grabbing the skeet gold in the Digvijay Singh shotgun championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Sunday.
The 46-year-old Mairaj beat Arjun Thakur 35-30 for the gold, as he missed only one bird in the medal round. He had qualified on top in the semifinal with 27 hits, after having made the final with a modest score of 115, six point behind qualification topper Gurjoat Khangura.
‘’Final and semifinal are great. I am going to work only on qualification for the next three months’’, said Mairaj, understandably happy about the way he had competed despite not being at his best.
It was a similar case during the last World Cup in Changwon, when Mairaj had to win a shoot off with four others after being tied on 119 for the last two berths, before racing to the gold.
Anantjeet Singh Naruka who had shot 120 in qualification lost the shoot off against Amrinder Singh Cheema for a berth in the medal round.

It was Raiza Dhillon all the way as she won both the women’s and junior gold. Raiza beat qualification topper Ganemat Sekhon 36-35 for the women’s gold, and beat Parinaaz Dhaliwal 33-32 for the junior gold.
