Muslim Mirror has released its much-anticipated annual list of the “100 Most Influential Indian Muslims of 2025,” spotlighting individuals who have made significant contributions to India’s public life across a wide spectrum of fields including politics, culture, education, business, media, religion, sports, and social service. Irfan Pathan Aids 60 Families Ravaged By Bihar Floods With Mother Teresa Foundation

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan is the first cricketer to come forward to help the people who have been severely affected by floods in Bihar and Assam.

India has been severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 1.8 million people being tested positive for the deadly virus. To make matters worse, the states of Bihar and Assam are also tussling with floods for over two months now. Both states have been gravely affected by the floods with lakhs of people being forced to displace themselves and take shelter in relief camps. As many as 38,47,531 people have been impacted across Bihar and more than 25,000 people have taken to shelter homes.

Amidst these testing times, the Mother Teresa Foundation has come to the rescue of people in Assam and Bihar in their fight against the catastrophe. The foundation has been urging prominent personalities from the Bollywood and the cricketing fraternity to come forward and help them in the noble cause.

And the first cricketer to come forward to help the people affected by floods in Bihar and Assam is former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. The same was confirmed by Yahya Rahmani, who is a part of the Mother Teresa Foundation. Rahmani has also been involved in organizing Flood Donation Drive across Bihar. While speaking to Crictracker, Rahmani said that Irfan Pathan donated ration to 60 families of Bihar’s flood-affected people. He added that the packet consisted of essential items like Chana, Chura, Daal, Oil, Dettol and Rice.

This is not the first time that Irfan Pathan has come forward to help those in need. In fact, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan distributed 10,000 kg rice and 700 kg potatoes to the daily wage labourers in Baroda who were finding it difficult to make their ends meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan had also distributed face masks to the public.

A credible role model for Indian Muslims

When Sania Mirza burst upon the global scene, the London-based New Statesman saw this “slender 18-year-old Muslim tennis player from India” as one of the 10 people who could change the world.

Jason Cowley, who wrote the article, believed that she had the “potential to change the world” for the following reasons: 1. She was the first Indian female tennis player to be ranked among the world’s Top 40. 2. She had made a breakthrough in sport despite coming from a country that usually discouraged women in sport. 3. She had discipline, tenacity, flamboyance. And all of this amounted to 4. She was going to “inspire a whole new generation of Indian girls”. Cowley’s article was written in October 2005, soon after a fatwa stipulated that Mirza should be prevented from playing tennis in skirts and T-shirts. Mirza instantly became a symbol of defiance, a “slender 18-year-old” girl who could stand up to Muslim hardliners. At around the same time, Time magazine hailed her as one of Asia’s heroes. AndThe New York Times said the weight of the country’s expectations rested on her.

I am at a loss to explain how or why the Sania phenomenon fizzled out in mainstream media. To be sure, she remains a remarkable player who will continue to inspire a whole generation of young women. But Mirza is no longer feted and hailed for her potentially transformative powers. I thought of Muslim role models once again when I saw the modest, self-effacing Allah Rakha Rahman accept his twin Oscars in Los Angeles.

There he was, up on stage in his very Indian designer sherwani singing Jai Ho, the song from Slumdog Millionaire. Or there he was on the red carpet with his wife, her head covered as she shyly posed for photographs. On stage, he was thanking God (“all glory and fame to God”) and his mother, talking of the path of love rather than hate that he had opted to follow. There was quiet dignity about him rather than the usual over-the-top Oscar exuberance. I suspected he would have had the same quiet smile had he lost.

Rahman is not known to be a man of many words. So, it was the subtext of what he said (or didn’t), that struck me as significant. Here was a Muslim who was confident in his identity as an Indian Muslim (in fact, with Maa Tujhe Salaam, he has done more to popularize Vande Mataram than the entire Sangh parivaar put together). Like the majority of Muslims everywhere, he believes in his God, in family values, in love and brotherhood. He was not out of place on the world stage performing with artistes drawn from all over the globe.

Rahman does not conform to any of the Muslim stereotypes. But he is undeniably an adherent of Islam, converting to the faith at the age of 21 along with his family. His views on politics are not widely known. But as a believing Muslim, he is reported to earmark one-third of his earnings to charity. Significantly, one of his first acts on returning home to India was to visit the Ameen Peer dargah at Kadappa in Andhra Pradesh to offer special prayers.

India’s Muslims have been singled out for their many unique qualities.

Thomas Friedman recently hailed the community’s decision to refuse burial in Mumbai to the Pakistani terrorists killed in the 26/11 attack. By denying terrorists the status of martyrs, the world’s second largest Muslim community was doing a “great service to Islam”, he said. Yet, one of the laments among Muslims is the lack of credible role models.

Bollywood within its secular framework has been able to throw up some figures—Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi most notably speak up for a pluralistic, democratic framework, but they’re not necessarily seen as strong adherents of Islam. Aamir Khan is the sensitive voice for the marginalized, not really a strong Muslim figure. Azim Premji is probably the richest Muslim in India but, once again, his success is defined in business, not religious terms.

In cricket, you could certainly look at the Pathan brothers who straddle both worlds—cricket and Islam. The sons of a poor muezzin who couldn’t afford even a pair of shoes, they now symbolize a can-do spirit. In a TV ad, they refer to their father as “abba”. It’s as if they’re saying, like Omar Abdullah, “We are Indians and Muslims and see no contradiction between the two.”

With his stunning Oscar win, Rahman reaffirms the same message to emerge as a new role model for young Indian Muslims. In equal parts a proud Muslim, proud Indian and proud professional, he stands as a counter to both the fanatic and the stereotype of the fanatic that many believe represent the average Muslim.

For this reason alone, I’m singing the new anthem: Jai Ho.

Out of favour, India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan hit a sublime hundred while brother Irfan Pathan also hit a fifty against Madhya Pradesh on day 3 of the Ranji Trophy encounter between Baroda and Madhya Pradesh. Known for his hard-hitting batting, Yusuf played an innings which once again highlighted his power hitting. In his innings of 111, the senior of the two brothers was more aggressive as he hit 13 fours and six maximums. Younger brother Irfan also kept pace with his innings of 80 which featured ten fours and three sixes.

Earlier, the home side was in a spot of bother after conceding 551 runs against MP and then losing four wickets for 54 runs at one stage. But the Pathan brothers dug in and rescued the side. Together they forged a partnership of 188 runs which helped the Baroda side avoid follow-on.

The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) today announced the 14-man squad for the upcoming season of the Ranji Trophy. The team placed in Group C will play six league matches and their performance there will determine if they advance to the quarter-finals. Irfan Pathan will lead the young team into the tournament once again with Deepak Hooda as his deputy.

Yusuf Pathan is another key cog in the team as they will attempt to change their fortunes after a dismal last season. The team has a lot to accomplish and they have a new coach with the team this time in Atul Bedade, a former Baroda cricketer who played 13 ODIs for the Indian team.

All eyes will be on Irfan when he takes the field as the all-rounder has spent a lot of time on his fitness as he looks leaner and fitter than ever, eager to make a mark. He wants to give it all this season and is focused on taking the team forward in the tournament.

“This is a very important season for me. I want to give my all. At the same time, the focus is on doing well for Baroda and take the team forward. That’s my aim,” he said while talking to PTI.

As has been the latest fitness trend among cricketers the 32-year-old also took the YoYo test and scored 16. “I am in a much better space than last year. The pre-season training has been satisfying and I don’t remember the last time I felt fitter. Baroda trainer took my YoYo test recently and I scored 16, which is pretty satisfying,” Irfan added.

Along with the younger Pathan, Yusuf would also want to make this domestic season count as he had an average IPL last season with the Kolkata Knight Riders and the big man has built up well during the practice games and looks set to explode once the season kicks off.

Another folk who will draw attention is Hooda, who was recently a part of the India Blue team that played the final of the Duleep Trophy. He scored a hundred in the tournament opener but had three quiet outings after that. It is an important season for him as well.

The Cricket Academy of Pathans (CAP), a coaching institute of Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and his brother Yusuf Pathan, who have collaborated with the Indian Army, has sponsored two youngsters from Jammu & Kashmir to train in their Noida-based academy.

Danish Qadeer (18 years) and Shahrukh Husssein (20 years) were selected in the trials conducted by the Indian Army in Kupwara district.

“Kids were selected by the Indian army for which they had conducted trials at Kupwara district of J&K. Out of 100 cricket enthusiasts, two were selected by the Indian Army for training under CAP,” Irfan said.

When asked about the youngsters’ future, Irfan said: “These kids have just enrolled in the academy. They would be going through the preliminary module of CAP and after completing the preliminary module they would advance to the other levels of CAP modules.”

Irfan also praised the Army for the move and said they will always support and promote the game.

“We are always there to support and promote cricket. It is a very noble move by the Indian Army to support these kids,” he said.

Irfan Pathan sets up West Zone’s win

He may have been released by his last year’s IPL franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants. Still, Irfan Pathan had a reason to smile on Monday. The veteran seamer exploded the explosive North Zone batting line-up to set up West Zone’s thumping eight-wicket victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 championship.

In fact, Pathan’s spell of three for 10, with the prize scalps of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Yuvraj Singh, would have impressed the sizeable IPL team coaches and scouts present in the President’s Box along with all three national selectors.

Pathan’s job was made easier by the North batsmen who committed hara-kiri and threw their wickets away. While Shikhar Dhawan poked at one that moved away from him to offer Kedar Jadhav a sharp chance in the slips, Pant and Yuvraj played extravagant shots against a moving ball to offer skiers on the off-side in the circle.

Barring Gautam Gambhir, who registered a second successive fifty before being dismissed off the penultimate ball of the innings, none of the other batsmen tried to apply themselves. As a result, a target of 106 was never going to ask questions of West Zone.

Parthiv Patel and Shreyas Iyer’s quickfire partnership at the top ensured West overhaul the paltry target with more than seven overs to spare and make up for the opening day’s loss against Central Zone. Iyer along with Ankeet Bawne and Priyank Panchal will now join the India A squad for the warm-up game against visiting Australians.
