Karnataka Legislative Council member and Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Naseer Ahmed, visited the Ajman Ruler’s Court and Thumbay Medicity, strengthening ties between Karnataka and the UAE.
At the Ruler’s Court, Ahmed met Sheikh Dr. Majid bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Court, to discuss avenues for collaboration in healthcare, education, and research. He extended an invitation to Sheikh Majid to visit Bengaluru and proposed a future delegation of high-level officials from Karnataka to Ajman and Thumbay Medicity.
As part of the visit, Ahmed toured Thumbay Medicity’s state-of-the-art healthcare, medical education, and research facilities. Praising the institution’s achievements, he described it as a global hub for healthcare excellence.
Commending the efforts of Dr. Thumbay Moideen, founder and president of Thumbay Group, Ahmed acknowledged his role in establishing Thumbay Medicity as a leader in the field. “It is a matter of immense pride to witness Dr. Thumbay’s remarkable progress and the iconic achievements of Thumbay Medicity,” he said.
Dr. Thumbay expressed gratitude for the visit, emphasizing the importance of collaborations that benefit both the UAE and India. “This visit marks a significant milestone in strengthening our shared vision for excellence in healthcare and education,” he stated.

After teaching for over 40 years, Dr. Tasneem Khaleel is retiring

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Hanging on the wall in Dr. Tasneem Khaleel’s office are the many awards and accolades marking the dedication and service she has given to Montana State University Billings over the past several decades.
Khaleel is retiring at the end of this semester and her presence and legacy will be with the science department and University for years to come.
Dr. Christine Shearer, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said that without the dedication and perseverance of Khaleel, the College and its students would not be where it is today.
“Dr. Khaleel has devoted her professional career to Montana State University Billings in a variety of capacities. She has been a tireless researcher and developer of the internationally-renowned Herbarium, a deeply committed advocate for the sciences and science education, a leader of a complex and diverse unit, and has been a staunch supporter and mentor of female scientists and academic professionals in all disciplines,” Shearer said. “Her tenacity and resilience advanced the College of Arts and Sciences and its programs, including the establishment of the Women’s and Gender Studies Center, which serves the university and the community. Her involvement in Girls-n-Science impacted hundreds of young women planning STEM careers.”
Khaleel has been paving the way for women in STEM since the beginning of her career. She has the honor of being the first woman recipient of a Ph.D from Bangalore University, India, where she graduated with a degree in Botany in 1970.
In 1976, Khaleel would begin her tenure with MSUB, as would her signature project: the establishment, maintenance, and management of the internationally known MSUB Herbarium.
“The Herbarium is one of my professional accomplishments that I am most proud of,” Khaleel said.

Post-retirement, she will continue being involved in the herbarium, which includes some 16,000 vascular plant specimens, some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Herbarium serves as a tool for basic research in plant systematics, ecology, phytogeography, and evolution.
While Khaleel’s career is highlighted by the 11 years she served as dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, from 2004 to 2014, she has no regrets to returning to the classroom before retirement.
Throughout her time on campus, she moved up from an assistant professor to department chair and says coming full circle made her last two years with students, “the best.”
“I wanted to retire as a faculty member,” Khaleel said. “Having that time as Dean allowed me to hear so many perspectives that my focus shifted when I returned to the classroom. My focus shifted from teaching to learning, to becoming a mentor and being more supportive.
For the last eight years the Tasneem and Shafiq Khaleel Endowment for Scholarships to Science has provided $1,000 awards to two students.

The Karnataka Media Academy announced its Lifetime Achievement Awards, Annual Awards, and Endowment Awards for 2023 and 2024 on Thursday.
For 2024, Abdussalam Puthige, Editor-in-Chief of Vartha Bharati, was selected for this honour for his significant contributions to journalism.
Among the Annual Award recipients for 2023 was Ibrahim Adkasthala from Vartha Bharati, recognised for his outstanding work. Muhammad Akheel, also from Vartha Bharati, received an Endowment Award for his impactful reporting. Special mentions for 2024 included his report on untouchability in Koppal.
Abdussalam Puthige started his career as sub-editor in Sanmarga weekly published from Mangalore. He is author, orator and good debater as well.

Farooqia PU College marked the success of Chandrayaan-3 at a celebration during its 42nd Annual Day. The event featured Kamran Ahmed, a scientist and engineer from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bengaluru and a resident of Mysuru.
Kamran Ahmed played a key role in the Chandrayaan-3 mission. He presented glimpses of the mission and on space exploration, encouraging students to aspire to become accomplished scientists, drawing inspiration from role models like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Prof. M. Sayeed Ahmed and Dr. Syed Abdul Khuddus presented a memento to Kamran Ahmed and Prof. Riyaz Ahmed unveiled the 35th volume of the college magazine, “Al-Farooq,” featuring the Chandrayaan-3 rocket launch and Vikram’s historic soft landing.
The issue also dedicated a section to late Mujeeb-Ur-Rehman Khan, a key figure in the establishment of Farooqia College in 1980, and paid tributes to freedom fighter Khazi Abdul Ghafoor Khan, known as “Coorg Gandhi.”
Dr. Anisa Ather, Retired Associate Professor of Microbiology, presented cash prizes in memory of her parents late Prof. Mohammed Moula and late Y. Sayeeda Banu to outstanding students — Mohammed Ikram (highest scorer in Science), Mohammed Afnan (Economics) and Zaid (Physics) — in II PU March 2023 exam.
Additionally, the magazine honoured the first method actor of world cinema, Dilip Kumar, with articles and rare photographs, and featured articles on Prof. B Shaikh Ali and Kannada Professor Kareemuddin of MDTDB College.
Special invitees were Dr. Thouqeer Ahmed and Dr. Shaista Ahmedi, an alumna of the college and successful doctors. Dr. Ahmedi announced cash prizes for the highest scorers.
Prof. M Sayeed Ahmed, Hon. Secretary of the College, emphasised the importance of serving parents and society, highlighting the obligation of Huqooq-ul-Ibaad for every Muslim.
Dr. Syed Abdul Khuddus presided over the function, which included Qirath by Mohammed Taufeeq and Naath by M.K. Zakir.
The event, compered by Zahara Jabeen Tabassum, featured a brief report on the college’s 2023 activities by R.H. Basha, Principal. BiBi Ameena proposed a vote of thanks, following cultural programmes, literary competitions and sports events.

Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO of Anand Rathi Wealth Ltd., and an alumnus of SDM-IMD, Mysuru, has received the IMC Young Alumni Award for his professional achievements at the India Management Conclave by MBAUniverse held at XLRI, Jamshedpur last month.
The previous awardees include top achievers from the IIMs, XLRI, SPJIMR etc.

Under the auspices of Media Study Centre and with the cooperation of Vistara TV and Basaveshwara Parishad, Dr. Mohammed Farooq Pasha, Asst. Prof. Department of Commerce and Management Kengeri and Dr. Fazilath Uzma from Microbiology and Food Technology Department of Bangalore University were awarded with Acharya Shri 2024 in recognition of their services in their respective fields.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Bengaluru South Shiv Prakash Devraju, renowned cardiologist Mahantesh R Chantimath, President of Basava Parishad Uma Devi, former MP Prof. I.G. Sanadi and others were present on the occasion.
Dr. Farooq has authored more 50 books for pre-university and degree courses in Commerce. Dr. Fazilath is a senior research fellow at Bangalore University and has written 11 books on the subject.

The Islamic Welfare Society in the coastal town of Bhatkal, on the shores of the Arabian Sea, has anchored the lives of lakhs of people within 40 years of its establishment. Registered under the Karnataka Societies Act, IWS provides interest-free Loans to people irrespective of religion, caste and creed. Around 15% of the beneficiaries are non-Muslims.
Loans worth around thirteen crore rupees were disbursed to more than 4800 marginalised persons last year for business, agriculture, education, house repair, medical treatment, marriage, etc. In the initial two months of the current financial year around 2200 people were provided with loans to the tune of 3 crore 42 lakhs.
During the tsunami of demonetization, the IWS rescued around 33 thousand people by offering loans amounting to 35 crores (2017-2019). Another disastrous wave of Covid-19 and the Lockdown gave a heavy blow to weaker sections. The IWS helped around 18 thousand badly-hit people, providing loans amounting to 31 crores (2019-2021).
Custodian, mentor
The Bhatkal Society acts as a custodian too. Various Masjids and NGOs keep their deposit for safety purposes with the Society.
The Society educates petty businessmen and small-time artisans to manage their funds. Pigmy deposit is an effective mode to promote saving habits. Society’s pigmy collectors procure around 1 lakh rupees daily to the needy at their door steps. With a pre and free consent of the depositors these funds are channelized as Interest Free Loans to needy persons. This brings spiritual solace to the depositors.
Systematic distribution of Zakat
The Society has got arrangements for collection and distribution of Zakath fund in an organized manner. Around 550 families of Bhatkal are benefitted through this Scheme. Deserving people in and around Bhatkal are provided with monthly pension of rupees 500, 300 and 200 per month out of the total sanctioned amount for the whole year. It is deposited in their accounts with the Society. The persons concerned withdraw the amount from their accounts as and when needed.
Monthly provision
Some philanthropists wish to help the poor with monthly provision, through the Society. Thirty poor families are provided with ration kits, costing rupees 1500, 1000 and 800. Some people deposit their Zakat amount along with a list of beneficiaries, concealing their identity with beneficiaries, and that amount is distributed accordingly.
Whereas many people deposit their Zakat amount in the Zakat Fund of the Society only and its distribution is left to the discretion of the Society.
Some others contribute particularly to medical needs of the poor. At an average five persons are benefited under this head every month. Even accident victims and people facing health emergencies are helped after confirmation from reliable sources.
Another utilization of our Zakat Fund is education. Poor students of Govt. schools in and around Bhatkal are provided with their essential needs. About 700 deserving students take advantage of this scheme annually. The Society is undertaking distribution of Zakat silently.
Public health is a very vast field in social work. The Society has recently started its work on public health front too, running a hospital under the name of Welfare Hospital. Frequent traveling of people to the nearby Mangalore city for minor health problems has come down to a good extent.

Ace IAS Academy inaugurated its UPSC/KPSC Batch 2024-25, with Police Sub-Inspector Mushahid Ahmed, an alumnus from the academy’s first batch, officially launching the program.
The event also saw the relaunch of the academy’s website by the Founder President of Ace Foundation, Saduddin Salihi. The occasion was graced by Abdul Salaam, retired General Manager of KIOCL, as the Guest of Honour.
Following the inauguration, a workshop on “Effective Communication” was conducted by motivational speaker and life coach, Saif Sulthan Syed.
The event was attended by the trustees of Ace Foundation, B.S. Muhammad Basheer, Siraj Ahmed, and Shahul Hameed. Nazeer Ahmed, Director of Ace IAS Academy, welcomed the dignitaries and students, while Academic Coordinator Hilaal Raafi hosted the event.

The recent catastrophic landslides in Wayanad have left a trail of unimaginable tragedy, as villages such as Maypad, Munda Kai, and Chooralmala are buried under debris.
Abdullah Madikeri from the Humanitarian Relief Society (HRS) Karnataka State visited the disaster site on Thursday morning, witnessing firsthand the scale of devastation.
Site of Despair At a distance of 15 kilometers from the epicenter of the disaster in Maypad, the scene was marked by the sight of ambulances racing with sirens blaring and the hurried activity of police and health department vehicles, signaling the severity of the crisis. Inside the Government Prauda School, bodies were being identified, including dismembered limbs and torsos, highlighting the horror of the tragedy.
A Community in Mourning The disaster has not only affected residents but also displaced over 500 migrant workers from Assam and other states. The flood has claimed numerous lives, including children, women, and the elderly, leaving many families in mourning without anyone to grieve for them. The bodies, scattered and dismembered, have become orphans in need of proper burial.
A Call for Reflection The tragedy shows how pointless sectarian and caste-based hatred is, revealing the harm it causes. The rubble, filled with broken boulders and body parts, highlights how little regard there is for human life during natural disasters. It reminds us to overcome these divisions and work towards living together in harmony.
Volunteers Step Up Amid the chaos, volunteers from various organizations have played a crucial role. Emergency services, traffic management, and food distribution efforts have been bolstered by enthusiastic youth and volunteers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Local establishments and mosques have provided meals and refreshments to those affected and the rescue teams.
Personal Accounts of Survival The disaster has affected many, including a family from Chamarajanagar district who narrowly escaped. They described how they were saved by quickly freeing their cattle and fleeing as the floodwaters surged, washing away their homes.
Heroic Sacrifices The tale of Prashant and Prajeesh, volunteers who lost their lives in the rescue efforts, stands out. Prajeesh, who was involved in rescue operations during a previous landslide, gave his life-saving others during the recent disaster. His body was found 35 kilometers away, a testament to his bravery and ultimate sacrifice.
A Teacher’s Heartfelt Remembrance A teacher who visited the site of the collapsed school building was overcome with emotion, reflecting on the loss of the students he once taught. His poignant recollection of teaching amidst the beauty of nature contrasts starkly with the current devastation.
Ongoing Efforts Search teams continue to work tirelessly, scouring forests and gardens for more bodies. Despite the overwhelming scale of the disaster, the unwavering dedication of volunteers and emergency responders remains a beacon of hope in these dark times.

Association for Protection of Civil Rights, Karnataka chapter has elected Yaseen Kodibengre as its new district president of Udupi district.
Sham Raj Birti and Najma were elected as vice presidents. Salahuddin was elected as general secretary, Prashant Mogaweera as joint secretary, Mujahid Ali Navunda as treasurer and Shahrukh Theerthahalli as Communications and Media secretary.
The new Advisory Committee members are Riaz Kodi, advocate Asadullah, Rihan Trasi, advocate Manjunath Giliyar, Dinakara Bengre, advocate Raghu, Tajuddin, Muneer Kandlur, Idrees Hoode, advocate Afwan Hoode, Muhammad Taufeek Gangolli, Riaz Mudrangadi, Siddique Kannangar, Zakaria Nejar, Ayyan Malpe, Sameer, Simran were selected.
State general secretary Muhammad Kunhi who presided over the meeting said, “We should not have the desire for power but should deal with the power that has come honestly and fairly. APCR has been continuously working to provide justice to the oppressed and downtrodden community in the society for the past 20 years and has also been working to create awareness among the public about the law.”
APCR state secretary Hussain Kodibengre and Waseem Abdullah were present on this occasion.
