On the occasion of its Founder’s Day, the Al-Ameen Educational Society felicitated M. Nurul Islam, Founder and General Secretary of Al-Ameen Mission, West Bengal, with the prestigious “Al-Ameen All India Community Leadership Award 2025” for his remarkable contributions to education and community empowerment, reported the MPositive.
The annual event, held in memory of the Society’s visionary founder, the late Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, brought together members and supporters of the Al-Ameen movement. Nurul Islam was invited as the chief guest and was honoured for his tireless efforts in transforming the educational landscape, particularly for underprivileged students in West Bengal.
Islam began the Al-Ameen Mission in 1986 by establishing a hostel and the Institute of Islamic Culture in Khalatpur through community donations—famously collected as a fistful of rice from every household. In 1987, he renamed the initiative Al-Ameen Mission, inspired by the title Al-Ameen (the trustworthy), given to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Since its inception, the Mission has achieved phenomenal success. With 77 residential branches, it currently houses more than 22,000 students, boasts a strong network of 50,000 alumni, and has produced over 2,400 doctors, 2,500 engineers, and numerous other professionals. In 2022 alone, nearly 500 students secured admissions in MBBS and BDS courses.
The late Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, who founded the Al-Ameen Educational Society in 1966 at the age of 30, is remembered as a renowned educationist, humanitarian, and reformer who dedicated his life to uplifting marginalized communities through education. His legacy continues to inspire the movement’s expansion across India.

M. Nurul Islam is a proud man as 472 students of Al Ameen Mission have qualified for free medical seats in government medical colleges across West Bengal through NEET (UG) 2025.
Muslims remain one of the most disadvantaged communities in India. In West Bengal—among the more underdeveloped states—their educational and socio-economic struggles are even more pronounced. Districts like Murshidabad and Malda, with significant Muslim populations, rank among the most backward in the country.
When the NEET results were announced, 154 students from Murshidabad and 77 from Malda scored above 500 marks, making them eligible for free medical education in the state’s government colleges.
What stands out is the socio-economic background of these students. Of the 472 successful candidates, 278 (59%) come from modest backgrounds: 194 (41%) belong to middle and upper-middle-income families, 152 (32%) to lower-middle-income groups, and 126 (27%) are from poor and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
The success of these students reflects not only academic excellence but also the transformative impact of Al Ameen Mission in empowering underprivileged communities through education.
“This year’s exam was comparatively tougher than in previous years, but by the grace of Allah, our students performed even better,” said M. Nurul Islam, founder general secretary of Al Ameen Mission, while speaking to Muslim Mirror.
Nurul Islam, the visionary general secretary of Al-Ameen Mission—often referred to as the Sir Syed of West Bengal—is widely recognized among the 100 most influential Indian Muslims. He pioneered an educational movement aimed at uplifting underprivileged Muslim students in West Bengal, significantly increasing their representation in medical colleges, even exceeding their population proportion in the state.
Born in 1959 in the small village of Khalatpur in Howrah district, Nurul Islam came from a humble background. His passion for education and community service became the foundation of a lifelong mission. In 1986, while he was a student, he started a hostel with just seven students inside the madrasa building. This initiative was sustained by a grassroots campaign—collecting a fistful of rice from every household in the village. In January 1987, this effort took shape as Al-Ameen Mission.
Today, the Mission has 77 branches across 23 districts of West Bengal, housing nearly 23,000 residential students. Over 49,000 students have passed from Al Ameen Mission, which follows the WBBSE, WBHSE, and CBSE curricula. In 2015, the West Bengal government honored M Nurul Islam with the Banga Bhushan Award for its contributions to education.
The Mission also engages in charitable work, offering financial aid and scholarships to unemployed Muslims. Under Nurul Islam’s leadership, it has become a beacon of holistic education, blending academic excellence with Islamic ethical values. The institution has produced hundreds of successful NEET and JEE candidates, changing the lives of many.

Over 600 students from West Bengal’s Al-Ameen Mission, spanning across 70 branches, achieved remarkable success by excelling in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2023.
This year’s topper from Al-Ameen is Ariful Haque, who achieved a score of 682 out of 720 in the NEET examination. He secured a rank of 1339 at the All India level.
Among the girls, Suhana Sultwa emerged as the topper, securing a score of 675 out of 720 in the examination. She obtained a rank of 2260 at the All India level.
A total of 494 boys, accounting for 79% of the qualified candidates, and 132 girls, making up 21% of the qualified candidates, have successfully passed the examination this year.
As per Al-Ameen’s data, out of the successful candidates, 27% (167 students) belong to poor and below-poverty line (BPL) families, 35% (218 students) come from the lower-middle-income group, and 38% (241 students) are from the middle and upper-middle-income group.
In the previous year, more than 500 students from Al-Ameen Coaching Academy successfully cleared the NEET examination and secured admissions into different medical colleges.
Al-Ameen Mission, established by M. Nurul Islam, is a renowned organization based in Howrah, West Bengal. It has an impressive track record of producing more than 3500 doctors (MBBS & BDS) and 3000 engineers, along with numerous researchers, administrative officers, teachers, and professors.

Ltd, India’s first media outlet dedicated to covering economic activities of minority communities, has given away its 11th edition of business awards at the Golmez Edupreneur Conference held in association with the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) here today. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM and P. A. Inamdar, Founder President, Azam Campus, Pune was conferred with Edu Doctor Award-2022 while Dr Abdul Qadeer, Founder Chairman, Shaheen Group, Karnataka was conferred with the Edupreneur of the Year Award.
The keynote address of the conference was delivered by Dr Frank F Islam, Chairman and CEO of FI investment group, USA. The conference has been attended by economic experts, business leaders, entrepreneurs, social workers, and professionals from across India.
Addressing the gathering of entrepreneurs, P. A. Inamdar urged, “Let us not talk about anything negative. We have to talk how much we have achieved and how far we have to achieve for development.” Emphasizing on imparting spoken English in all vernacular medium schools, he said that technology can create a much better environment and contribute to educational progress. He suggested all to think about how to empower neighbourhood small institutions.

Delivering the keynote address in the inaugural session, Dr Frank F Islam emphasized on the need for edupreneurship in India. “Much has been done for the development of education among the minorities in India, and unfortunately much remains to be done”, he said.
Welcoming the guests, Mahbubul Hoque said that through institution building one can change the environment of a particular place and bring progress to the people of the area. He thanked all the participants for coming over to the North East and for their desire to contribute for the development of the people through promotion of education. “We as Indians have to think for development of every citizen, not simply of the minorities”, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G. D. Sharma, VC, USTM mentioned about National Education Policy-2020 and said that USTM is preparing 82 teachers for technology oriented courses so that the university becomes a global university through technology. “We have to establish peace in the North East region though the means of education”, he added.
A magazine of Maeeshat Media was released on the occasion by M. Nurul Islam, Founder General Secretary, Al Ameen Mission, Kolkata and other dignitaries.
