Muslim Educational Institutions Federation striving for social harmony: Umar Teekay

Muslim Educational Institutions Federation (MEIF) is not just providing excellent education, it is also spreading social harmony, Umar Teekay, Honorary President of MEIF and Chairman of Teekays Group, said.

He was addressing the educational conference organized by the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Muslim Educational Institutions Federation at the Town Hall in the city on Monday.

“Former minister BA Moideen had dreamt of integrating all Muslim educational institutions. MEIF is a step towards bringing that dream to life,” he said.

“Solving a problem is important, but it should not become the priority. The priority should always be of preventing problems,” Teekay advised.

Citing the instance of the recent hijab controversy, he said, “We handled the situation carefully while facing opposition from all ends and ensured that Muslim girls were not deprived of a chance to take the examinations. This was possible through the joint efforts of the members of MEIF.”

Dr. N Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of NITTE Deemed to be University inaugurated the educational conference.

Umar Teekay presided over the conference while Syed Mohamed Beary, Honorary Advisor of MEIF and Chairman of Bearys Group of Institutions, delivered the introductory address.

‘We Created History’: MC Stan is the First Rapper to Win ‘Bigg Boss’

The Pune rapper and producer hails the national spotlight from the reality show as a win for the Indian hip-hop community.

After four months in the Bigg Boss house, Pune rapper and producer MC Stan aka Altaf Tadavi Shaikh emerged as the winner of Season 16 of the reality show, taking home the trophy and a reported cash prize of ₹31.80 lakhs following public voting. With this, Stan is the first Indian rapper and musician to win the long-running reality show, which has generally been dominated by actors and film industry celebrities.

“The journey has been very powerful. I got a lot of experience,” Stan said in a post-win press conference in Mumbai. After actor and host Salman Khan held up Stan’s hand to judge him the winner, the first photos from his win came with the rapper holding the Bigg Boss horse trophy with Khan.

In an Instagram post celebrating the win, Stan wrote, “We created history, stayed real throughout, repped hip-hop on national T.V. Ammi ka Sapna poora hogaya [My mother’s dream came true]. Trophy P-town aagayi [The trophy has come to Pune].”

Seated amongst press in a black leather jacket, with all his chains and rings in place, Stan was reflecting where Indian hip-hop can reach in terms of public consciousness. “If you go to see, this is a win for a lot of people; the rap community — whoever’s here from the gullies and [those] areas — I don’t know honestly what people saw and liked in me, but I’m grateful for their love,” he said at one point.

Winning and surviving 133 days in the Bigg Boss house through public voting, Stan acknowledged the role that the public played in keeping him in the competition. He adds, “I saw a lot of housemates talk about how they want to win, but I didn’t think I could make that claim, because it’s not in my hands. Woh Hindustan ka haath mein tha [It was in India’s hands].”

By January, it was clear that MC Stan was a top contender to win Bigg Boss Season 16, owing to how he often kept his head down and just went with the flow, although he was occasionally involved in a few fights with other housemates. In addition to his in-house concert with hip-hop acts like Seedhe Maut and Ikka, MC Stan was at first adamant to get done and go home, but eventually stuck it out to win.

Muslim freedom fighters to be remembered on Republic Day

With an intent to highlight the role of Islamic leaders in the pre-independence freedom struggle, a group of Muslim youths have decided to organise a function on the occasion of Republic Day, during which sacrifices of unsung heroes from their community would be highlighted.

Besides organising an elaborate programme after unfurling the Tricolour at the Dehliz Chowk on January 26, the enthusiasts will also install banners displaying portraits of more than 20 prominent Muslim freedom fighters at various locations.

The organisers say the gesture will motivate Muslim youths of the region to come forward and play active in nation building, irrespective of their political, social or religious allegiances.

Zeshan Haidar, the convener of the scheduled event, said youths from various Muslim organisations of the area had been roped in to work in tandem for restoring the lost glory of leaders from their community, who had made supreme sacrifices in struggle against the British Government and played a major role in getting freedom for the country.

“Unfortunately, successive governments have failed to recognise the contributions of Muslim leaders in the freedom struggle and a majority of Muslim freedom fighters and martyrs have remained unsung during functions held to celebrate national events such as Republic Day and Independence Day,” Zeshan Haidar said, adding that these names were also missing from history books.

The enthusiasts have shortlisted names of about 100 Muslim leaders of pre-Independence era and portraits of 20 from them will be displayed in the region.

Maulana Shah Abdul Qadir Ludhianvi (grandfather of Shahi Imam Punjab Maulana Usman Ludhianvi), Zakir Husain, Begum Hazrat Mehal, Maulvi Ahmadullah, Abadi Bano Begam, Ashfaqulla Khan and Husain Ahmed Madni were cited among more prominent Muslim freedom fighters whose portraits figure on the proposed banners.

The HIF Qatar held its 8th Annual General Meeting at Maaza Restaurant on Friday, 3rd February 2023. The program began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Master Moiz and Master Shafee. HIF Qatar Unit President Shafakath Hussain welcomed the gathering.

The meeting featured a presentation by Rizwan Ahmed on the overall activities of HIF and future objectives.

The chief guest of the event, Dr. Abdul Salem, founder of Ideal Indian School, addressed the gathering and appreciated the works of HIF. He emphasized the importance of implementing the five values – namely respect, responsibility, excellence, integrity and collaboration – in day-to-day life.

Prominent guests, including Abdul Razak, President of South Kanara Welfare Association; Fayaz Ahmed, President of Karnataka Muslim Cultural Association; Saqib Raza, President of Hidaya Foundation; Ayub Ullal, President of Qatar Indian Social forum; Mohammed Javed, President of Family Friend Circle; and Sheikh Usman, In-charge of Karnataka Unit-Indian Friend Circle, were in attendance at the meeting. They spoke about the importance of collaboration between organizations for the greater good of the community.

In the meeting, the members remembered the contributions of S.M. Basheer to the society who passed away recently.

Shahim, secretary of the HIF Qatar unit, gave the vote of thanks. Imran Mohammed was the master of ceremony.

The meeting was a successful demonstration of HIF’s commitment to community development and collaboration.

February 5, 1884. Does the date ring a bell? No prizes for guessing. It was this day 139 years ago that the Hyderabad State got its sixth ruler, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. He was just 18 when he was invested with full administrative powers. British Viceroy, Lord Rippon, visited Hyderabad for the first time to place the young Nizam on the gaddi at Khilwat Mubarak in Chowmahalla Palace.

The palace was recently in the news when the body of Mukarram Jah Bahadur, the titular Nizam, was kept here for public display and a few days later, his son, Azmet Jah, was crowned as his successor.

This day is also significant as Mahboob Ali Khan was the first Nizam to be coroneted by the representative of Her Majesty, the Queen. Soon after the investiture ceremony he was conferred the title of Grand Commander of the Star of India.

Interestingly the 6th Nizam inherited the masnad at the age of two itself when his father, Nawab Afzal-ud-Daula, passed away. But a Council of Regency was put in place to look after the administration till he came of age. When he turned 16 years, he was initiated into the details of office work and the administration of the State by Nawab Salar Jung.

The first thing that Mahboob Ali Khan did after assuming power was to proclaim that nothing pleased him more than seeing people live in peace and prosperity. Subsequent years proved that he lived up to his words by undertaking administrative reforms that benefitted the people. Development of railways, revision of revenue settlements, setting up of cotton mills at Hyderabad, Aurangabad and Gulbarga are among his significant achievements. Besides this, education, irrigation, medicine also received top priority. The famous Chloroform Commission was held in Hyderabad all because of the scientific interest shown by the sixth Nizam.

Popularly known as Mahboob Ali Pasha, he is also responsible for the establishment of the Victoria Memorial Orphanage, Madrasa-i-Aliya, Asafia State Library and Dairatul Maarif. Old timers recall how the sixth Nizam ruled more with the heart than the head. One can’t forget the relief measures he took after the disastrous Musi floods of 1908.

Poet, marksman, administrator and lover of gems and jewellery, his was a multifaceted personality. Elegantly dressed, he had a fascination for expensive clothes and cars. His two-storey wardrobe at Purani Haveli, the longest one in the world, still has a huge collection of expensive clothes collected by him. He had the reputation of not wearing the same dress twice.

Similarly, his fondness for vintage cars is legendary. Some of the expensive cars like Napier, Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts, were made to order for the then wealthiest man in the world. They are still a big draw at the Chowmahalla Palace.

It was he who bought the famous Jacob Diamond, which forms the crowning glory of the Nizam’s jewels. The 6th Nizam, who was exposed to Western education, was fond of a lavish lifestyle and had a fascination for the good things in life. He breathed his last at Falaknuma Palace at the age of 45 following a paralytic attack. But as his name, Mahboob suggests, he remains a beloved ruler even to this day.

On India’s Republic Day, a Mushaira was organized in the Engineering and Polytechnic Auditorium of Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi. This event saw some of India’s most prominent Hindi and Urdu literary voices as Ashok Chakrdhar, Ahmad Mahfooz, Dinesh Raghuvanshi, Salma Shaheen, Ahmad Naseeb Khan, Aleena Itrat Rizvi, Majid Deobandi, Shehpar Rasool, Khalid Mubashir, Khalid Mehmood, Chandradev Yadav, Durga Prasad, Shahid Anjum, Moeen Shadab, and Khan M Rizwan.

Patriotic poems remembering heroes of India’s national freedom struggle, and India’s democratic values, diversity, and unity were recited. This event coincided with many universities across India experiencing student unrest over issues that can distract students from their studies.

Dinesh Raghuvanshi said, ‘apni mitti pe agar naaz nahi kar sakte, zindagi hum tera aaghaz nahi kar sakte’ or when Majid Debandi recited ‘Jis ke dil mein watan ki azmat hai, hum usey apni jaan kehte haen’, the hall resounded with applause. That was the true culmination of this event meant to send a message of solidarity and unity from this most important educational institution of the country.

It was a well-attended event Presided over by the Vice Chancellor Professor Najma Akhtar.

The message from the poetic symposium was clear – a vocal minority cannot be allowed to hijack the peaceful and progressive atmosphere of the University. The University has always played a significant role in nation-building through quality education and, giving good professionals to the country. It also conducts research and promotes cultural diversity, and encourages students to become informed and socially responsible citizens who can contribute to the development of the country.

Jamia Millia Islamia was founded in 1920 as a non-government, secular university in Delhi, India. It was established as a response to British colonial rule and the Indian independence movement. It played a significant role in the independence struggle by educating and empowering the youth to participate in the freedom movement. In the post-independence era, Jamia has continued to be a center of excellence in education, research, and cultural exchange, serving as a model for an inclusive and equitable society.

Jamia Millia Islamia has produced many noted alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields such as politics, arts, media, and academics. Some of the notable alumni include Salman Khurshid, former Union Minister of India, and Shah Rukh Khan, a Bollywood actor, and film producer. Mukul Kumar, aerospace engineer and former NASA scientist, Saeed Akhtar Mirza, film director and screenwriter, and Nafisa Ali, actor, and social activist.

Jamia Millia Islamia was recently ranked as one of the top universities in India by several national and international ranking agencies.

The University has a vibrant student political culture and is known for its strong student activism and political engagement. Various student groups play an important role in shaping the discourse on important national and local issues, and in advocating for student rights and interests.

Two-Day Exhibition On Muslim Women Achievers To Be Held At Hyderabad’s Salar Jung Museum

A two-day exhibition celebrating the achievements of Muslim women will be held at the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad on October 1 and 2 by the Intellectual Learning Methodologies (ILM) Foundation in association with the Shaheen Group of Educational Institutions, Islah and Asli Talbina.

The exhibition is aimed at educating the common man about the astounding accomplishments of Muslim women.

Achievements of 40 women in different fields will be showcased and details of their accomplishments will be explained through posters, Siasat.com quoted Dr Lateef of ILM Foundation as saying.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, general secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

According to a study of early Islamic history, took an active part in all walks of life. These women excelled as rulers, warriors, nurses, scholars, jurists, teachers, traders and companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

When Dr Lateef started working on the subject some one-and-half years ago he stumbled upon the names of nearly 10,000 women who had made immense contributions in their field.

Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammed, who made a huge contribution to the cause of Islam through her intelligence and scholarship is among some of the well-known names whose achievements will be showcased at the exhibition.

“Lives of early Muslim women represent exemplary models, transcending time and boundaries. And they are a great source of inspiration,” Dr Lateef told the website.

Organisers also plan to take the exhibition to several parts across the country after Hyderabad. Juveria Sabir and Zoha Ansari, working at the Edventure Park, a start-up incubator have been working relentlessly to showcase the exhibition on inspiring women achievers.

The two-day exhibition with a free entry will be held in Salar Jung Museum’s eastern block from 11 am to 5 pm.

Bengaluru: Alternative Literary Festival Organised To Counter Exclusion Of Muslim Writers From Govt Funded Conference

A parallel literary conference was held in Bengaluru on January 8, 2023, in response to the alleged exclusion of Muslim writers from the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana organised by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, a non-profit organisation, funded by the Karnataka government.

Activists and writers in Karnataka expressed their disappointment at the lack of diversity at the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, leading a group of them to organise a more inclusive event, the ‘Jana Sahitya Sammelana’. Banu Mushtaq and Dr. Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy were the chief guests at the Jana Sahitya Sammelana.

Dalit writer and Sahitya Akademi award winner Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy highlighted the threat of the imposition of Hindi on classical languages such as Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Odia. He also spoke about the attempts to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, and the exclusion of Muslims from every sphere of public life. “The exclusion of Muslim writers from the literary fest in Haveri was part of a wider agenda of pushing out Muslims from the mainstream,” he said.

Purushottama Bilimale, a prominent Kannada scholar, criticised Kannada writers and representative organisations for their lack of action in addressing the various crises facing the Kannada language and the state of Karnataka. Bilimale specifically mentioned the attacks on syncretic culture as a crisis that needs attention. He pointed out the lack of proper platforms for discussing these issues and expressed disappointment towards the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana for not addressing them. He suggests the organization of conventions like the Janasahitya Sammelana in various regions of the state of Karnataka to help address these issues.

The conference featured poetry, speeches, and panel discussions that focused on resistance and inclusion.

The Jana Sahitya Sammelana was put together by members of various organisations such as Samudaya, Democratic Youth Federation of India, AIDWA, Dalita Sangharsha Samiti, Ondede, Journalist Study Centre, and many others. Actors and activists like Prakash Raj and Dr. Akkai Padmashali were also present as guests and speakers at the conference. The conference was held at the Alumni Hall of the University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat is evoking the memories of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of the Kingdom of Awadh and the man behind introducing the Urdu culture and the rich Awadhi cuisine in Kolkata. The great grandson of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, Shahanshah Mirza in collaboration with The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat, has curated a series of soiree and Awadhi cuisine on January 8, 2023, to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. 

This is the only occasion in the world where Shaam-e-Awadh is being organised in honour of Wajid Ali Shah’s 200th birth anniversary. The celebration will commence with a series of live performances where guests can immerse in the diverse Urdu culture. The evening is set to begin with a Kathak performance by Nandini Sinha, an eminent Lucknowi Gharana-style Kathak exponent. The Kathak performance will be followed by Mehfil-e-Tarannum, also known as Dastangoi, a soulful poetry performance directed by Askari Naqvi. Adding to the celebration, Atif Ali Khan, the great grandson of the doyen of Indian Classical music, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, singer of Kasur Gharana, will enchant the audiences with his nostalgic Ghazal and Hindustani classical performance.

To mark the birth anniversary celebration, Awadhi Begum Sheeba Iqbal and Chef Shafiqun along with the culinary team of The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat will showcase the ambrosial spread of Awadhi cuisine with dishes include non-vegetarian classics like ‘Kakori Kebab’ and ‘Mutton Nihari’, ‘Seekh kebabs’, ‘Ghutwan kabab’, ‘Yakhni Pulao’ and vegetarian classic such as ‘Ulte Pulte’, ‘Sagpaita with Ghee Chawal’ ‘Qiwami Seewai’, ‘Tali gobhi ka salaan’ to name a few. Through the skills of Chef Sheeba Iqbal and Chef Shafiqun, the food festival will offer delicacies of not just Awadhi cuisine but also of the remnants of the Awadhi food of the royals.

Areej Ahmed, a resident of Udupi was awarded the best outgoing student for the year 2021 at the 23rd Annual and Awards day at the Manipal College of Health Professions.

Areej, completed her Bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) with distinction. She is the daughter of Udupi’s Khaleel Ahmed and Zeenath.

Areej received the award of best outgoing student of the BASLP batch from Manipal and Mangalore campuses.
