40th National Unani Medicine Conference: Maharashtra CM announces 10% reservation for Unani doctors

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Unani physicians will have a 10% reservation quota in the state’s public hospitals and primary healthcare facilities. He also said that the state needed a government-run Unani medical college. He made these commitments through a video message during the 40th National Unani Medicine Conference, which was hosted by the Nagpur branch of the All India Unani Tibbi Congress.

The Chief Minister thanked Unani physicians for their services during the deadly Covid epidemic in a brief speech. He assured the conference that every effort would be made to advance Unani medicine in the state.

 Dr Wajahat Mirza, a Congress MLC and the head of the Maharashtra State Waqf Board, welcomed the Chief Minister’s decision in his speech and assured the gathering that he would exert all of his political power to see that the proposed government Unani Tibbi College would be realised. He claimed that if there had been no conflict over the city, the college would have been founded much earlier.

Former  Congress minister and MLA Nitin Raut echoed his sentiments, saying that Unani medicine is a very efficient and cost-effective treatment and that it should be given every chance to flourish.

Dr Anis Ahmad, a former minister of Maharashtra, proposed building an Unani house with full facilities. He also offered to provide a plot of land to the intended centre.

AIUTC national president Professor Mushtaq Ahmad, who was presiding over the conference, praised the Maharashtra chief minister and noted that this was the first time the Maharashtra government has made a significant announcement about the development of Unani medicine. He also expressed his joy at the All India Unani Tibbi Congress Nagpur branch’s pompous arrangement of this magnificent conference, in which devoted Unani physicians from all across the country took part with great zeal.

In his keynote address Dr Syed Ahmed Khan, general secretary of AIUTC provided a snapshot of the organisation’s activities. He listed problems faced by the Unani fraternity at the national and state levels. He pointed out that Unani representation was overlooked in the new decision-making process as it was clubbed with a regional medicine of system. He called upon the Unani fraternity to make concentrated efforts for the advancement of Unani Tibb.

As far as Maharashtra is concerned, according to the conference’s organising chairman Dr Niyazuddin Siddiqui, it is a model state for Unani medicine because it enjoys the support of the state government. He claimed that there are 200 Unani doctors practising in and around Nagpur city and demanded the revival of the Unani Tibbi college, which was shut down in 20024. The college was started in 1991. He claimed Nagpur had become a hub for unani medicine.

In a similar vein, Special Guest Dr Vaidya Jayant Devpujari (Chairman, NCISM Government of India) stated in his speech that our primary goal is to standardise medical colleges. He said, “Such a conference is very important for the promotion of Unani medicine, and the role played by Unani medicine in Covid-19 is commendable. I also wish to congratulate the members of the All India Unani Tibbi Congress Nagpur for organising a very standard and grand programme which will send a strong message about Unani medicine throughout the country.

Dr Nadim Usmani, the advisor to AIUTC Maharasthra, also shed light on the activities of State Unani unit. He said Unani medicine is a bright future in the state.

 The 40th Conference titled   ‘Role of Unani Medicine In present Scenario’has sessions on specialised lectures on some major diseases. The experts and academics presented their papers through power-point. Professor Ahsan Farooqui presented his paper on Fasd(Venesection): Concept and Application with Demonstration. Dr Shabbir Raja’s topic was  Dialysis and RenalTransplant: Myths and Facts. Cancer Management with Unani Medicine by Dr Mastan Shaikh, Pain Management in Unani Medicine by  Prof Khan Mohammad Qiaser and Management of PCOS in Unani Medicine by Prof Nafees Bano.

 Prof. Arif Zaidi, Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Jamia Hamdard also spoke on the occasion.

The conference held on December 25 also released a souvenir highlighting the achievements of Unani Tibb in Maharashtra.

In the end, the 40th conference also passed several resolutions including the Directorate of AYUSH, Government of Maharashtra must create a post, Deputy Director – Unani, Assistant Director – Unani in the Directorate to represent the Unani System of Medicine in the State of Maharashtra.

The other resolutions are as follows:

*-  Ministry of Food and Drugs Administration, Government of Maharashtra must create a post of Licensing Authority – Unani / Technical Officer- Unani  / Drug Inspector – Unani in FDA to serve as an expert of Unani under provisions given in  Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940 and Rules 1945.

*  Follow up to complete implementation for the establishment of Government Unani Medical College in the State of Maharashtra  As per the declaration of Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Eknath Shinde Ji on 25th Dec 2022 at Nagpur to establish one Government Unani Medical College in the State of Maharashtra.

* Central Government and Delhi NCR must declare and approve Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, karol baugh as Hakim Ajmal khan Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia University.

* Ministry of AYUSH  and NCISM, New Delhi must proposed to amend the Act NCISM 2020 to felicitate separate Unani Board under NCISM

* There are No proper representation in NCISM and its constituted authority/committee, hence a sufficient number of Unani representatives must be there.

* Strong recommendation for Empanelment of Unani System of Medicine in the Ministry of Defence / Defence Department to serve healthcare services to Defence personnel as Ayurveda is already empanelled.

Hyderabad: Madrasa-I-Aliya celebrates 150 years of completion

It was in 1872 that the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Hyderabad, Mir Turab Ali Khan popularly known as Salar Jung – I, established Madrasa-e-Aliya.

 Madrasa-I-Aliya alumini on Sunday celebrated the existence and contribution of their alma mater.

Hyderabad:

Madrasa-I-Aliya, one of the oldest school of Hyderabad, on Sunday celebrated the 150 years of its completion.

A program was organised by the alumni of the school in the school premises at Nizam College, Gunfoundry to remember the contributions of Madarsa-i-Aliya in their lives.

It was in 1872 that the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Hyderabad, Mir Turab Ali Khan popularly known as Salar Jung – I, established Madrasa-e-Aliya a few years after setting up the Darul Uloom school.

The event started with Tarana-i-Aliya and the present teachers and students also witnessed and heard the experiences of the alumni.

The alumni took several initiatives and a discussion highlighting some nostalgic anecdotes by the teachers and the students made the celebrations more meaningful and interesting.

To encourage the students, 150 Pure Silver Medals were awarded to meritorious students of Class X of school and Intermediate Final year students of Aliya Junior College.

On this occasion, an Audio-Visual documentary on 150 years of Madrasa-I-Aliya prepared by department of mass communication and journalism, MANUU Hyderabad was presented before the audience.

The event was enriched by some distinguished guests from department of education, Dr Shaid Ali Khan, Mohammed Ali Rafath IAS — Alumina Madrasa-I-Aliya, Yogaraj — Alumina Madrasa-I-Aliya, Gautam Chand Jain— Chairman Pokarna Limited (Alumnus of Aliya Junior College). Other pass out students from batch 1949 onwards  graced the occasion with their presence.

“The flashbacks to the old Aliya days revived before our eyes”, said Arshad Nawab, Alumni of Madarsa-I-Aliya.

The alumnus shared their fond memories and unique stories as a student in the school. Everyone wished and appealed the Government of Telangana to restore Madarsa I Aliya to its original glory.

The celebration committee which comprised of Basharath Ali, Shujaat, Ali Rafath, IAS, and others thanked the participants for taking out time.

AMU students win Judges Choice Award in NASA Space App Challenge

An unintended but welcome consequence of the lockdown to contain the coronavirus has been improved air quality stated the presentation of ALTAIR, a team of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students led by MBBS first-year student, Ayesha Samdani, which won the ‘The Judges Choice Award’ in the International NASA Space App Challenge-2020 for presenting a solution in response to the NASA’s Challenge ‘A One Health Approach’.

Ayesha and team members, Mohd Zakir Husain (MBBS), Aman Ahmad Khan (MBBS), Faisal Jamil (B.Tech) and Abdullah Samdani (BA LLB) gave an analysis on air quality of the pre and post lockdown periods in the Indo Gangetic region of Northern India. Their study gave details about how an improvement in the air quality benefited the health of people.

For the presentation, the ALTAIR members also coded an Air Quality Index (AQI) Calculator to measure AQI of a certain region, which is helpful in giving health and cautionary statements and providing guidance to common people on pollution related health issues.

Congratulating the students on the achievement, Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqui, Principal, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) of the university and Prof Shakeel Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law said that the work of these AMU students is formative as it provides a clear comparison of average concentration levels during the months before the lockdown and the time period during the lockdown restrictions, showing a reduction in SO2 level.

The event was judged by ISRO and NASA scientists including Tazeen Siddiqui of NASA.

 Sony Entertainment Television’s kids singing reality show, Superstar Singer 2 has finally found this season’s winner! With judges Himesh Reshammiya, Alka Yagnik and Javed Ali, the contestants truly came a long way. Making it to the top six were Mohammad Faiz, Mani, Pranjal Biswas, Aryananda R Babu, Rituraj and Sayisha Gupta.

Mohammad Faiz from Jodhpur was declared as the season winner and lifted the coveted Superstar Singer 2 trophy. Along with the trophy, the 14-year-old was also awarded with a cheque of Rs 15 lakh.

Aptly titled as the Future Voice of Romance by Akshay Kumar and other B-town celebrities, Mohammad Faiz brought alive his passion for music on stage through his mesmerising performances. With his first performance on the song Khamoshiyan in the audition round, Faiz found a special place in the hearts of the judges and audience alike. From there on, there was no looking back for Faiz as he wowed the judges, audience and all the celebrity guest with his magical voice. He was given the title of India’s young singing sensation by judge Himesh Reshammiya who also gave him an opportunity with his first ever singing break – Merre Liye. Not only this, but memorable moments were when eminent personalities expressed their wish of getting Faiz to sing and work for them one day as a playback singer.

Faiz is a well-deserved winner, his graph on the show has been so good. He has been one of the best singers the stage has witnessed, and his determination towards music and zeal to win has made him win the coveted title of Superstar Singer. Khalid Jawed’s The Paradise of Food has been awarded the JCB Prize for Literature 2022. The book was chosen by a panel of five judges. 

The Paradise of Food has been translated into English from Urdu by Baran Farooqi and published by Juggernaut. The Rs 25 lakh prize was awarded to the author virtually by Sunil Khurana, chief operating officer, JCB India, and A.S. Panneerselvan, chair of the jury for 2022, at a hybrid event organised at The Oberoi, New Delhi. Khalid Jawed also received the trophy — a sculpture titled ‘Mirror Melting’ by Delhi artist duo Thukral and Tagra.

The Paradise of Food, which is the fourth translation to win the JCB Prize and the first in Urdu, is a bildungsroman that traces the narrator’s journey through life anchored in a middle-class Muslim joint family. 

The jury comprised Panneerselvan, journalist, editor and columnist; author Amitabha Bagchi; J Devika, historian, feminist, social critic and academician; author Janice Pariat and Rakhee Balaram, assistant professor, Global Art and Art History at the University of  Albany, State University of New York. The award ceremony began with a welcome note from Mita Kapur, literary director of the JCB Prize, and an address by Deepak Shetty, CEO & managing director, JCB India. Classical dance performances by Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra led up to the grand announcement.

Speaking about the merit of The Paradise of Food as a piece of literature, Bagchi commented, “This singular and moving book shines a scintillating light on the violence at the heart of human civilisation. The language contains several beautiful and unusual formulations that are a literary achievement by both the author and the extremely skilled translator. A literary landmark in a less-celebrated genre of Urdu’s grand literary tradition, this work deserves to be widely read in India and beyond.” 

Other members of the jury, too, unanimously appreciated Jawed’s book. Rakhee Balaram described the work as a “book of indescribable brilliance” and to J. Devika, it was a “powerful ice-pick in the winter of civilisational crisis that has engulfed the countries of South Asia”.

After halt of 2 years, country’s largest Islamic congregation commences in Bhopal

Held for the first time in 1948, the Bhopal Ijtema is known for its massive participation of people and for promotion of peace and inclusivity.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) :

The Alami Tabhligi Ijtema, an annual Islamic congregation held every year in Madhya Pradesh commenced today in the outskirts of the capital Bhopal. The four-day religious event is the third-largest Islamic congregation globally. The first such congregation was held 73 years ago. The event is taking place after two years of halt caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The congregation is not only popular for being the largest religious gathering in India but is also well known for the promotion of peace and inclusivity. 

For the first time, international participants will not be in attendance at the congregation. 

According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, the congregation will be held on 300 acres of land. “20,000 volunteers will handle management. More than 17,000 taps are installed for ablution only. 7 crore litres of water will be consumed every day for drinking, ablution, and cleansing. Non-veg food is banned due to Lumpi Virus. There will be 45 parking slots and 7000 dustbins. 5000 volunteers will take care of the cleaning. 5 fire brigades and 6 fire bullets will be present there. 2000 policemen will manage security and 500 will handle the traffic management. There will be 3 hospitals of 10 beds each as well,” the report said. 

History of the congregation
Shams Ur Rehman Alavi, a prominent journalist and former editor with Hindustan Times told TwoCircles.net that even though this grand congregation of Muslims is a purely religious event but in Bhopal, it means much more. “It has a unique relationship with the city and its inhabitants irrespective of their beliefs. Come winter and there is a buzz about the dates of Ijtima. Though such gatherings are now held in different cities across the country, the Ijtima here has an altogether different ‘connect’ with the people,” he said. 

Shams Ur Rehman Alavi said that after the independence of the country, the first congregation was held in Bhopal in 1948 at Masjid Shakoor Khan. 

It is said that the first congregation was a small gathering. Later, it was shifted to Taajul Masajid and became a big event. In 2002, it was shifted to outside the city in Eintkhedi as the gathering had become too big by then with a participation of 5 lakh people. Today, nearly 1.5 people congregate at the event. “People still get nostalgic when it was held in Tajul Masajid for over half a century. In those days, the temporary market that came to be associated with the gathering gave the congregation another meaning for Bhopalites,” Shams Ur Rehman Alavi said. 

Preparations run for months
The preparations for the congregation began several months ago. Many youths from the nearby areas volunteer to help with the preparations. “This is farmland. It is very difficult to clean it and make it suitable for the congregation. We made drainage to discharge water from the farms with the help of a generator to dry the land sooner,” Abuzer, a volunteer, told TwoCircles.net. 

Abuzer said all volunteer work is done by Muslims. “People willingly come here and do labour without demanding charges. We do it for the sake of Allah,” he said. 

Atiq Ul Islam is a member of the organizing team that is looking after the preparations. He told TwoCircles.net that the 300 acres of farmland where the congregation is taking place is lent free by locals, which include both Muslims and non-Muslims. 

“Non-Muslims have never refused to lend their lands to this congregation. We organize this Ijtima to please God and send a message to the world to follow God’s commandments which is to do good and refrain from evil,” Atiq Ul Islam said. 

He said that the congregation is held to send a message of peace. “Every faithful attends this Ijtima,” he said. 

Atiq Ul Islam informed that Muslim volunteers also take responsibility for security and traffic management. “The administration plays a supporting role by keeping an overall eye on things. Rest everything is managed by our volunteers,” he said. 

Akram Ahmed Khan is a resident of Bhopal who has been attending the congregation since childhood. For many years, he has volunteered at the event.  

Akram said that the congregation has a cross-functional team that has a dedicated system including a security team, transportation and commute team, road management (traffic management) team, parking team, and emergency and procurement (medical team). “The management skills I learned here have helped me in my professional life as well,” Akram Ahmed said. 

For effective disposal of waste, the management collaborates with Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). For its zero-waste, the congregation has earned laurels.

The evening of 4th November 2022 became immortal for the lovers of Urdu and Dr. Noor Amrohvi. For the first time in British history, the first ever international conference and celebration of Dr. Noor Amrohvi regarding Urdu was held at the prestigious, magnificent, and historic Ealing Town Hall in London.

Ealing Town Hall was inaugurated on 15 December 1888 by the then Prince of Wales Edward. It was Prince Edward who went on to be called King Edward VII.

Professor Aqeel Danish, patron of Bazm-e-Sukhan Britain, thanked the guests and explained the history and achievements of Bazm-e-Sukhan, and the Mayor of Ealing London, Muneer Ahmed gave the welcome speech, while Ehsan Shahid, the leader of Bazm-e-Sukhan, recited his poems for the participants. Ms. Shazia Khan, General Secretary of Al Noor International and founder of Stardom, came specially from America, highlighted Dr. Noor Amrohvi’s services to Urdu literature and his community. Dr. Shamsa Qureshi, the managing director of Al-Noor International and a well-known poet, could not come from America, but she expressed her good wishes over the phone from there and said that this honor can only be given to Dr. Noor Amrohvi. He is the most celebrated person for whom we Americans are proud.

Dr. Gabriela, a special representative of the Romanian Embassy and a literary figure, also participated in this speech ceremony for the first time and expressed his views.

Dr. Noor Amrohvi was awarded a certificate by the Mayor of Ealing London for his social and literary services and an award from Bizm-e-Sukhan Great Britain and it was acknowledged that the name of Dr. Noor Amrohvi is also London. It will also be written in golden letters in the literary history that he became the first representative of Urdu who took Urdu and his culture to such a high position and reached the London Parliament which was unimaginable. That’s why he was welcomed not only by all the audience, but also by all the assembly workers and mayors, and a standing ovation was given to Dr. Noor Amrohvi.

In the end, the celebrant Dr. Noor Amrohvi took the seat and thanked Bazm for organizing the event. He said that Muneer Ahmed Sahib and Bazm-e-Sukhan may have made history today, after that there may be thousands of mushairas here, but whenever there is an event related to Urdu, this mushaira will always be remembered as the first mushaira. He will always be remembered.

League of Islamic Universities launches climate action on campuses

On October 27, the ‘Malaibar Declaration for Climate Action’ held by the League of Islamic Universities based in Cairo and Jamia Markaz Kozhikode in Markaz Knowledge City concluded.

Members including 200 universities from 60 countries, were present at Jamia Markaz, an Islamic university in Kozhikode, Kerala, for the International Climate Action Summit which was held between October 17-20.

Dr. Osama Al-Abed, secretary general of the league, opened the event by urging global stakeholders to use fresh approaches to combat climate change because the globe is currently “facing challenges that are structurally different from the past.”

As a consequence of talks on many facets of the main issue, Dr. Al Abdu and Muhammed Abdul Hakim Azhari, the rector of Jamia Markaz, jointly made the following declaration: The Partnership of University Leadership in Mitigating the Climate Change.

The declaration includes a request for environmental science to be taught in member universities’ curricula, for financial and human resources to be set aside for research into tackling climate challenges, as well as for new technology to be developed for the same.

“We thought that the real community who has to work on climate change is students. In every country, if the universities go for some course on climate then the future generation would be working on climate change,” Jamia Markaz rector Dr. Abdul Hakeem Al-Kandi told reporters.

“Students, who are the future leaders, when they are getting aware of climate change, (they) will impact the whole world.” he said.

Al-Kandi stated that the league would create an environmental studies centre in Calicut, India.

The goal of the university league’s activity, according to environmentalist and Markaz Law College principal Dr. C. Abdul Samad, who organised the summit, was to engage community members in various societies and make them stakeholders in saving the environment.

“Introducing environmental science courses in universities is important as the young leaders need to be educated to think about nature and climate change, and its impact,” he said.

“It is the new generation that can preserve the diversity of nature and respect the environment. The whole idea is to save the planet for the future,” he further stated.

At the summit, 63 research papers on diverse facets of the main issue were presented. A hundred trees were planted on the Knowledge City Campus by university leaders as part of Jamia Markaz’s afforestation programme and in support of the summit.

City’s Saqlin Mushtaq has bagged 1st prize in wrestling (86 kg) contest in the Mysuru Division level Dasara Sports Meet 2022-23 held at Mangaluru recently.

He had also bagged second place in the District-level Dasara CM Cup Sports Meet (2022-23) wrestling (Men).

He is the son of Khaleel Qureshi, who is also a wrestler and a resident of Usmania Block, Ghousia Nagar, Udayagiri.

Mumbai-born Dr Tahera Qutbuddin First Indian To Win Arab World Nobel Prize

Dr Tahera Qutbuddin, a professor of Arabic Literature at the University of Chicago, recently became the first person of Indian-origin to win the 15th Sheikh Zyed Book Award. The award is considered to be the Nobel Prize of the Arab world.

Dr Qutbuddin, who was born in Mumbai and was educated until class 12 in India, also serves on the editorial board of NYU Abu Dhabi’s Library of Arabic Literature. She won the award for her latest book, Arabic Oration – Art and Function, published by Brill Academic Publishers of Leiden in 2019.

In the book, she puts forth a comprehensive theory of Arabic literature in its foundational oral period dating the seventh and eighth centuries AD. She discusses it’s influence on modern-day sermons and lectures as well.

Having completed her higher secondary from Sophia College in Mumbai, Dr Qutbuddin pursued her BA from Ain Shams University, Cairo and got her PhD and MA from Harvard University, USA.


In a recent interview with a portal, she said that although she has lived away for many decades in Egypt and now the US, her roots are vital to who she is, and Indian culture is part of the fabric of her being.

“It (Mumbai) is the place of my childhood memories, of playing in the monsoon rains and eating mangoes in the summer. I come back to Mumbai often. I love my Mother India, and pray for her security and progress, and for harmony and love between the many beautiful communities that call her home,” she said.

According to her bio, her research “focuses on intersections of the literary, the religious, and the political in classical Arabic poetry and prose.”

She is the recipient of several prestigious fellowships, including support from the Franke Institute of Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
