Dr. Waliur Rahman, an alumnus of the Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been named for the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar 2025, announced by the Government of India on October 26, 2025.

Currently serving as Scientist-E at the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, Dr. Rahman has been recognised for his outstanding contributions in the field of isotope geochemistry and Antarctic climate research.

A distinguished earth scientist, Dr. Rahman’s research spans a wide range of topics, including Antarctic climate variability through ice core records, trace element and isotope studies in oceans, paleo-oceanography using radiogenic and stable isotopes, and Himalayan weathering and erosion processes. His pioneering work in developing non-traditional isotope measurements has contributed significantly to understanding global climatic and oceanic processes.

Dr. Rahman earned his B.Sc. (Geology Hons.) and M.Sc. (Applied Geology) degrees from Aligarh Muslim University in 2002 and 2004 respectively, and later obtained his Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.

His illustrious career includes research fellowships and international recognition such as the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowships (Germany), the Certificate of Merit in Polar Science and Technology (2019), the Young Researcher Award (2021) from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and the National Geoscience Award (2023) from the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.

Dr. Rahman has authored over 50 peer-reviewed research papers in leading international journals including Nature Communications, Geophysical Research Letters, Marine Chemistry, and Science of the Total Environment. His contributions have enhanced India’s global standing in the fields of Antarctic and oceanic research.

Congratulating Dr. Rahman on his achievement, AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon said that the university takes pride in its alumni who continue to bring laurels to their alma mater through excellence in research and national service, and Dr Rahman’s achievement will work as an impetus for young students who wish to make a career in the field of earth sciences.

Prof. Faisal Devji (L) and Dr Abdul Qadeer to receive Sir Syed Excellence Awards

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Sir Syed Excellence Awards, which will be presented during the Sir Syed Day Commemorative Ceremony on October 17, marking the birth anniversary of AMU founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

Prof. Shafey Kidwai, Director, Sir Syed Academy, and convener of the jury informed that the International Sir Syed Excellence Award will be conferred upon Professor Faisal Devji, Beit Professor of Global and Imperial History, Balliol College, University of Oxford. Widely regarded as a leading scholar of South Asian studies, Islam, globalisation, and ethics, Prof. Devji holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Intellectual History from the University of Chicago and a B.A. (Double Honours) in History and Anthropology from the University of British Columbia.

Born in Tanzania, Prof. Devji has taught at institutions, including Yale, Cornell, Harvard, and the University of Chicago. His acclaimed works include Waning Crescent: The Rise and Fall of Global Islam, Muslim Zion: Pakistan as a Political Idea, and The Impossible Indian: Gandhi and the Temptation of Violence. His influential essay Apologetic Modernity explores the 19th-century Muslim engagement with modernity, particularly through the lens of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement.

The National Sir Syed Excellence Award will be presented to Dr. Abdul Qadeer, Chairman of the Shaheen Group of Institutions, for his transformative contributions to education among marginalised communities. Founded in 1989, the group now educates over 20,000 students with a faculty of 500+ across 13 Indian states. It operates schools, PU and degree colleges, and offers coaching for NEET, JEE, UPSC, as well as runs Hifz-ul-Quran Plus and Madrasa Plus programmes.

The awards, carrying cash prizes of ₹2,00,000 (international) and ₹1,00,000 (national), recognise exceptional contributions in Sir Syed Studies, South Asian Studies, Urdu Literature, Medieval History, Social Reform, Communal Harmony, Journalism, Interfaith Dialogue, and related fields.

Awardees were selected by a distinguished jury chaired by Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi and comprising Prof. Anisur Rehman, Prof. A.R. Kidwai, Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain, and Prof. Shafey Kidwai, with final approval by AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon.

AMU Alumna Asiya Islam Appointed Assistant Professor at The London School of Economics

In a significant development, Dr Asiya Islam, an alumna of Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University, has been appointed Assistant Professor as a permanent faculty at the Department of Gender Studies, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), London.

Retd. Professor Kaniz Khwaja Ahmed, who had taught Asiya Islam, Communicative English at Women’s College, told India Tomorrow, “I remember her as an ideal student as I taught her long back. Of all the students, I have taught so far, she stands out as the most ideal student. Although the subject I used to teach her was elementary, used in our daily life conversation, she always took it very seriously. She was very regular, attentive and punctual. In her, I saw the spark to achieve something in her life. I hope she still remembers me. We all are proud of her achievement and wish all the best for her career ahead.”

Before joining LSE Gender Studies, she was a Lecturer in Gender and Work at the University of Leeds. Before that, I was a Junior Research Fellow at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. In these positions, I taught on feminist global political economy, Black feminist theory, and intersectionality.

Asiya completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge, her MSc in Gender, Media and Culture at the London School of Economics, and her BA(Hons) in Communicative English at Aligarh Muslim University.

Another teacher Professor Nikhat Taj, who also taught Asiya, said, “Asiya, indeed has made us very proud. Her achievement comes as no surprise for she had been a meritorious/promising student. She excelled not only in academics but was an ace performer in extra-curricular activities as well. She won the Zakir Hussain Medal for Academic Excellence at the undergraduate level, and that was just the beginning of her success story. I recall her as a diligent and committed worker, who would fulfil (most satisfactorily) any task, or project either given to her or taken up by herself.”

Professor Nikhat added, “Her appointment as an associate professor at the London School of Economics is just another step for many other achievements to come her way in the future. I see her as an inspiration and a role model for all the students of AMU – her alma mater.”

 AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon, who was earlier Principal of Women’s College, while congratulating Dr. Asiya Islam on her achievement, said, “Asiya’s appointment at the London School of Economics will encourage our students to pursue higher studies abroad and work hard to make an academic career in prestigious foreign universities.”

Showcasing the brilliance and legacy of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Faculty of Law, Akbar Siddiqui has secured the top position in the Delhi Higher Judicial Services Examination.

The result of the Delhi Higher Judicial Services Examination 2024, along with the merit list, was announced on August 20, 2025.

“A Distinguished Lawyer”

An alumnus of AMU 2007 batch, Akbar Siddiqui, is Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court of India. He is celebrated for his distinguished practice before the Supreme Court of India.

Siddiqui’s role in the landmark Satender Kumar Antil case, which significantly shaped the jurisprudence on bail, is also noteworthy.

His achievement yet again cements the Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University as a cradle of some of the finest legal minds in the country.

“A Matter of Great Pride”

AMU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Naima Khatoon, has congratulated Akbar Siddiqui on this remarkable feat.

“Siddiqui’s accomplishment is a matter of great pride for AMU and its Faculty of Law. His journey from Aligarh to the Supreme Court and now to the higher judiciary is an inspiring example of academic rigor, professional excellence, and perseverance. We wish him continued success in serving the cause of justice.”

Akbar Siddiqui has obtained a total of 712 marks out of the total 1,000 marks to secure the first position in the merit list.

Siddiqui’s success adds another illustrious chapter to AMU’s rich tradition of producing leaders in the legal fraternity, inspiring future generations of aspiring jurists.

Indian envoy and AMU vice chancellor grace the occasion

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni in Qatar, under the banner of AMUAAQ, celebrated the annual Sir Syed Day on December 27, 2024 at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.

Prof Naima Khatoon, the first female Vice-Chancellor of AMU, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while the Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE Vipul presided over the gala ceremony.

Other guests of honour included former Vice-Chancellor of AMU Prof Mohammad Gulrez, Moez Wajihuddin and Patron of AMUAAQ Sophia Bukhari. Mustafa M Hariyanawala, Yashir Nainar, Haroon Sataj Khan and Anwar Karim were special guests.

The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a two-minute silence to mourn the passing of the former prime minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh.

Ghazala Yasmeen welcomed the guests, while Dr Ashna Nusrat and Dr Nayeem Aman conducted the programme as Masters of Ceremony. Dr Ashna Nusrat read a message of appreciation from the former Chancellor of AMU, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, addressed to the members of the AMU Alumni Association Qatar.

President of AMUAAQ Dr Nadeem Zafar Jilani, in his address, paid rich tributes to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. He recalled how Sir Syed travelled to England to study the British education system and established the MAO College based on the models of Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Prof Naima Khatoon spoke on the selected theme of the event, ‘One Team, One Dream’. She praised the unwavering love of alumni worldwide for their alma mater and its founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

Former Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Gulrez delivered the keynote address on ‘Jobs and Career Opportunities in the 21st Century’.

HE Vipul congratulated Aligarians on the Founder’s Day celebrations and acknowledged the contribution of great visionary Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in nation building.

Other dignitaries who spoke on the occasion included Sophia Bukhari and Anwar Karim.

As in previous years, AMUAAQ presented five achievement awards to eminent personalities. The first award, for lifetime achievement in the field of education, was presented to Prof Naima Khatoon. The award for outstanding community service was given to Safeerurahman, while Haroon Sartaj Khan, President of the AMU Alumni Association Oman, was named Aligarian of the Year. The Media Personality of the Year award was presented to RJ Aafrin of Radio Mirchi. Additionally, Akhtar Mehdi of the renowned Mehdi Hasan Tailors received a lifetime achievement award for his sartorial excellence in crafting traditional sherwanis, which have attracted many celebrities and former heads of state to his shop in Aligarh.

Er Jawed Ahmad, chairman of AMUAAQ, announced the formation of a pan-GCC Federation of AMU Alumni Associations to unite and bring together all Aligarians residing in the GCC countries—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Vice-President of AMUAAQ Faisal Naseem presented a vote of thanks to the sponsors, as well as the executive and advisory committee members of AMUAAQ.

Jawed Ahmad, chairman of AMUAAQ, proposed that the Vice-Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon become the ex-officio patron of AMU alumni to strengthen AMUAAQ.

Another proposal regarding the establishment of an offshore AMU campus in Doha was also revisited. He further informed the audience that the AMUAAQ will sign MoUs with several companies to provide students with training and job opportunities.

AMU alumni from all walks of life attended the function with their families in large numbers. Many prominent residents of Doha were also present, including literary personalities such as Ateeq Anzer, Aziz Nabeel, Ahmad Ashfaq, Ashfaq Deshmukh, Wasi ul Haq Wasi, and Obaid Tahir, to name a few.

A raffle draw, sponsored by Malabar Gold, was held and won by Farhana, Imran, Kainat and Shoyeb.

An MoU was signed between AMUAAQ and Hind Guru Academy to support and guide NRI students during their stay in India.

In addition to thought-provoking speeches, the programme also featured an interactive ‘Kahoot Quiz’ on AMU and the Aligarh Movement.

Prizes were awarded to the top three winners, with Faisal Abdullah securing first place, Ayan as the first runner-up, and Ashfaque Deshmukh as the second runner-up. The quiz and IT support were expertly managed by Almas Ahmad.

Mementos and certificates were presented on behalf of AMUAAQ to the guests and notable achievers.

AMU VC, Faculty Pay Tribute to Professor Qazi Zain-us-Sajideen Siddiqui

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) community deeply mourned the passing of Professor Qazi Zain-us-Sajideen Siddiqui, former Dean of the Faculty of Theology and former Chairman of the Department of Sunni Theology.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Naima Khatoon, expressed her condolences, remembering Professor Siddiqui as a scholar of humility and grace. “Despite his academic eminence and leadership, he remained approachable and humble. His contributions to the university and the academic community were invaluable,” she stated.

Earlier a condolence meeting was held at the department to honour his legacy, with faculty members, students, and dignitaries in attendance.

Presiding over the gathering, Professor Muhammad Habibullah Qasmi, Dean and Chairman of the Faculty of Theology, highlighted Professor Siddiqui’s strong commitment to his principles. Former Dean, Professor Muhammad Saud Alam Qasmi, reflected on his deep engagement with socio-religious issues impacting the Muslim community.

Professor Towqueer Alam Falahi, also a former Dean, spoke of his mentorship and dedication to students, while Dr. Syed Muhammad Asghar praised his courage in addressing complex issues.

Other faculty members, including Professor Muhammad Rashid, Dr. Nadeem Ashraf, and Dr. Obaid Iqbal Asim, shared memories of his wisdom, generosity, and lasting impact on the university and society.

The meeting concluded with prayers for Professor Siddiqui’s eternal peace.

AMU Professor Jawaid Iqbal takes charge as VC of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University

Professor Jawaid Iqbal, an eminent academic from the Department of West Asian Studies and North African Studies, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajouri, Jammu. He has taken over the charge of his office. His appointment was made by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on October 15, 2024, for tenure of three years.

Prior to this appointment, Professor Iqbal held several key administrative roles at AMU. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of International Studies and Chairman of the Department of West Asian and North African Studies. He also held the position of acting Vice Chancellor of AMU.

The AMU fraternity feels immense pride in his elevation to this prestigious role, said Professor Naima Khatoon, Vice Chancellor, AMU, adding that it is a testament to the high standards of scholarship and leadership cultivated at AMU.

Prof Mohammad Gulrez, and Prof. Mohammad Azher, Chairman of the Department of West Asian and North African Studies at AMU, also congratulated Prof Iqbal on his new role.

AMU Mourns the Demise of Prof Seemin Hasan

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) community gathered to honor the memory of the late Prof Seemin Hasan, who passed away on May 23.

During a heartfelt condolence meeting organized by the AMU Women’s Club, Vice Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon paid rich tributes to Prof Hasan, reminiscing about their days together in Abdullah Hall. She prayed for Prof Hasan’s soul to find peace in Jannah and offered solace to her family and friends.

Prof Hasan, a senior faculty member in the Department of English and a valued member of the AMU Women’s Club, was remembered fondly by her colleagues and friends.

Dr. Hameeda Tariq, the founding Patron of the Club, highlighted Prof Hasan’s exceptional abilities as a professional, a friend, and her remarkable culinary skills.

Prof Azarmi Dukh Safavi, former President of the Club and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts, spoke of Prof Hasan’s caring and generous nature. Prof Syeda Nuzhat Zeba, current President of the AMU Women’s Club, praised Prof Hasan’s exemplary character and recounted their long-standing professional and personal relationship.

Prof Subuhi Khan, Secretary of the AMU Women’s Club, expressed the profound sense of loss felt by the community, describing Prof Hasan as a great source of inspiration. Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Director of the UGC MMTTC and founding Joint Secretary of the Club, lauded Prof Hasan as an outstanding English scholar and gracious teacher, emphasizing her role as a diligent role model.

On behalf of the family, Prof Hasan’s son, Dr. Saif, paid rich tributes to his mother and thanked the club members for their support during this difficult time. He mentioned that AMU was integral to her identity and announced the family’s intention to establish an endowment in her name. This endowment will fund commemorative lectures, literary and scholastic events, and quality publications at the university.

The condolence message was handed over to Prof Abrar Hasan, Prof Seemin Hasan’s husband and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, by Vice Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon, Secretary Prof Subuhi Khan, and other club members.

A two-minute silence was observed in memory of Prof Hasan.

Prof Seemin Hasan is survived by her husband, Prof Abrar Hasan, and her sons, Dr. Saif and Dr. Shabih.
