Three siblings from Bhatkal, currently studying in Mangaluru, secured top honours at the State-level Karate Championship held in Moodbidri on September 1, 2025 The event was organised by the Shorin-Ryu Karate Association in association with Swami’s Strength Training and MK Ananthraj College of Physical Education.
Ismail Nameer, a 15-year-old student of Huda Islamia School, Mangaluru, won first place in Kumite (fight).
His younger brother, Hamdan (11 years), a student of Presidency School, Mangaluru, secured first place in Kumite (Fight) and second place in Kata in the under-11 category.
Their sister, Umme Kulsum, also a student of Presidency School, claimed first place in the Fighting category in the under-8 category.
The siblings are children of Nisar Ahmed Ruknuddin and Nada of Bhatkal, who are presently residing in Mangaluru.

Senior writer, multilingual scholar and progressive thinker Prof. M. Karimuddin (95) passed away at his home in Ganjam, Srirangapatna on Saturday morning due to age-related illness.
Karimuddin, who was unmarried, had served as a Kannada professor and later as a principal in government degree colleges in Mysore, Mandya, Madikeri and elsewhere before retiring.
A student of Kuvempu, he had studied Kannada, English, Urdu, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit.
He had written many works including Orphan Muslims, Sanchita Chintana, and Baalu Baddu. Many of his thought-provoking speeches on All India Radio were popular. ‘Prof. Karimuddin’s Life and Literature’ was the text for students of class 9 who were studying Kannada as a second language in Urdu medium.
A good orator, Karimuddin was actively involved in farmer, Dalit, pro-Kannada, progressive, and anti-idiotic movements even in his later years. His ancestors were relatives of Tipu Sultan.
Karimuddin, who retired as a Kannada professor at Maharaja’s College, Mysore, was well-versed in Kannada grammar, Old Kannada and New Kannada literature.
He had also done a lot of research on Tipu Sultan. It is said that he had written many collected works on the history of Tipu Sultan.
His friend Prof. Nanjaraja Urs expressed his condolences, saying that his death is a huge loss to the Kannada nation.

Dr. Syed Shah Khusro Hussaini, Founder and Chancellor, Khaja Bandanawaz University was conferred with “Mohsin-E-Millat Award” by Sir Syed Awareness Forum (SAF) during a function which was attended by many prominent personalities from the field of education at University Polytechnic Auditorium, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
During the occasion a seminar on “Modern Education and Muslims” was also organised by the Forum.
Addressing the seminar Dr. Syed Shah Khusro Hussaini said that education is necessary for Muslims throughout the world. He said that, Islam is a modern religion and if the principles of Islam are followed honestly, then everyone can achieve success in their lives. He further said that he is the admirer of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and he is trying his best to carry forward the mission of Sir Syed by establishing a university. He appealed to the Muslims to focus on education as it is the key to success. In the last he said that division on the basis of school of thought is causing harm to the Muslims. It should be avoided by them.
Presiding over the seminar, Prof. Mohd. Hanif Beg, Pro Vice Chancellor, AMU said that in today’s world it is very important to discuss on the issues of education. He congratulated the SAF for organizing the seminar on modern education. He further said that Sir Syed has always given importance to modern education. At the end he requested the students to work hard for civil services and judicial examinations.

Guest of Honor, Mr. Abdul Hamid, IPS and Registrar, AMU said that today Muslims are lagging behind in the field of modern education. Sachar Committee report has confirmed that the educational status of Muslims in India is lower than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He said that higher education is the only solution of this problem. He requested the students of AMU to focus on their education and keep themselves away from unnecessary activities. At the last he congratulated Prof. Shakeel Samdani, President SAF for organizing a wonderful seminar on a very important topic.
President of the forum, Prof. Shakeel Samdani, while delivering his speech, said that Muslims have dominated the world in the field of education, science, literature, etc for about 600 years and this was only possible because they focused more on education and research. He congratulated the South India for carrying forward the mission of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. South Indian Muslims have established much more education institutions as compared to Muslims of North India. He further said that Dr. Khusro Hussaini has established 24 educational institutions and the most important among them is the Khaja Banda Nawaz University. He said that the work of Dr. Hussaini is appreciable as he has helped the poor sections of the society by establishing educational institutions. At the last he said that it is the pleasure of SAF that Dr. Hussaini has accepted the Mohsin-E-Millat Award.
Principal of Abdullah College, Prof. Naima Gulrez said that North India is lagging behind in establishing educational institutions as compared to South India. She gave the example of Parsis that although they are numerically less in population but they are one of the most prosperous community in the country. It is because they are educationally advanced and they focus very much over modern education. She expressed her sorrow about the condition of Muslim women in the society.
Vice Chancellor of Khaja Banda Nawaz University, Prof. Abdul Jaleel Khan Pathan congratulated SAF for conferring ‘Mohsin-E-Millat Award’ on Dr. Hussaini. He said that it is the need of hour to carry forward the mission of Sir Syed and to provide quality education to Muslims.
Dr. Mohib Ul Haque, said that the time has come for Muslims to focus on modern education if they want to succeed. He congratulated Prof. Shakeel Samdani and SAF for their contribution in establishing Tipu Sultan Block at AMU.
Anjum Tabassum Lashkri (Karnataka) and Mr. Tariq Hussain, AMU were felicitated with “SAF Excellence Award”. Ayesha Samdani conducted the seminar and Mansoor Ilahi proposed the vote of thanks. Sarah Samdani also spoke on this occasion. Poetess Rehana Shaheen recited a Nazm on Sir Syed.
Wajahat Jilani welcomed the guests and Aman highlighted the objectives of the Forum.

Anjuman Boys High School, managed by Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, organised Tribute Talks 2025, a digital contest held in memory of the late Mohtisham Mohammed Yaseen, a respected tutor, mentor and role model for students of the institution.
According to a press statement, eighteen students took part in the event, which was described as a heartfelt effort to honour the legacy and guidance of the late educator. The sudden demise of Yaseen continues to be felt within the school community, leaving a void among staff and students.
As part of the tribute, the “Mohtisham Mohammed Yaseen Memorial Award” was conferred on Mohammed Jasim, son of Umar Javeed Tonse, in the senior category, and Muhammed Tahu, son of Abdul Majid Shabandri, in the junior category for classes six and seven.
The statement added that recognition was also given to students whose digital presentations received the highest online engagement, with Zainulabideen Unais, son of Mohiddin Anas Siddiahmeda, and Ahmed Arham, son of Abdul Basit Ruknuddin, being honoured.
The school management stated that the award was not only a recognition of student talent but also a promise to uphold the values and inspiration left behind by Mohtisham Mohammed Yaseen.

The 79th Independence Day was celebrated at Secab Engineering College here on 15th August 2025 with great enthusiasm. The chief guest of the function was Salauddin Ayub Punekar.
After the flag hoisting, Nazeer Ahmed Kazi, Retired Executive Engineer, addressed the gathering. In his speech, he highlighted that India, with a population of 140 crore, is home to people of many religions, yet united as one nation. He said, “Unity in diversity is the true culture of our country. Nowhere else in the world do we find such an example. Let us be proud of it.”
He reminded everyone that Independence Day marks India’s freedom from British colonial rule on 15th August 1947. The day honours the courage and sacrifices of the freedom fighters and inspires citizens to uphold the values of liberty, unity, and responsibility. He recalled the contributions of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who declared in 1916: “Swaraj is my birth-right and I shall have it.”
Quoting Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, he stressed the need for India to be self-reliant and globally competitive. Addressing the students, he said that engineers have a dual responsibility – both as citizens and as professionals – in nation-building. Referring to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision of engineers as the builders of the nation, he urged them to come to the forefront in technology development and achieve technological independence through innovative and globally competitive practices.
He also acknowledged India’s remarkable progress, standing today as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies. However, he cautioned against persisting challenges like communalism, casteism, corruption, unemployment, and social injustice, calling for collective efforts to overcome them.
The Director of SECAB Association, Salauddin Punekar, in his address, emphasised that independence should not remain a symbolic celebration but must reflect in every walk of life.
Several students and staff members also spoke on the occasion.
The Founder of SECAB Association, Shamshuddin Punekar, was present on the dais along with Principal Abbas Ali. The programme concluded with the President’s address, who welcomed all and extended heartfelt Independence Day wishes.
It was a memorable and meaningful celebration.

A remarkable achievement by a student from Kumbra’s Markazul Huda Women’s College has drawn attention, as she meticulously handwritten the entire Quran using an ink pen.
The achiever, Fathima Sajla Ismail, a BCom student, hails from Baitadka in Kaniyur village of Kadaba taluk and is the daughter of Ismail and Zahra Jasmine. She dedicated nearly five years to this extraordinary work, beginning in January 2021 and completing it in August 2025.
For the handwritten manuscript, Sajla used white, light blue, and light green papers, along with a black ink pen. The Quran consists of 604 pages, bound with a red and gold-coloured protective cover, and weighs about 14 kg.
“Writing a single page would take me around four hours. On some days, I managed to write two pages in eight hours. In total, I completed the work in 302 days, spending 2,416 hours,” shared Sajla.
The unveiling of the handwritten copy and recognition of her achievement took place at Markazul Huda Women’s College in Kumbra.
The manuscript was officially released by Yaseen Sakhafi Al Azhari, a Mudarris from Markaz Knowledge City, Kerala.

When she joined the Indian Combat Academy (ICSA) on Bannerghatta Road to learn Jujitsu and self-defence, little did Nabila Birjis (29), know that this would be a turning point in her life. On April 2, she turned out to be the only girl selected from Karnataka to compete in the South Asia Open Jujitsu Championship 2019, in Chennai.
Born and brought up in Mysuru, she moved to Bengaluru seven years ago to work for an architecture firm. At the age of 25, after undergoing rigorous training under coach Jitesh Banjan, she started competing seriously. So far, she has won six golds at the national-level JAI Jiu Jitsu events under 68kg and 70 kg categories; two silver medals at South Asian Championships; and gold at Body power Expo Open Weight.
She is also the only Indian woman to have secured two silver medals at South Asia Open Jujitsu Championship 2019. “I always wanted to achieve something in sports. My mother Noor Fathima Khan, HOD and professor at Maharanis Science College, Mysuru wanted me to complete my graduation before pursuing sports. I started my sporting career only at 25.”
It was not easy for Birjis in the field. She has quit her job, moved cities, so she could be able to devote more time for training. “I remember when I travelled for three hours just to be able to train for an hour. After struggling for years, I now seem to have struck some sort of balance between being an architect and an athlete,” she added.
Jujitsu is a team sport, and the biggest challenge she finds is to keep up with the energy levels of younger athletes. To stay fighting fit, she follows a strict sports diet. For Birjis, losing teaches more than winning. “My loss at the South Asia Championship has taught me how to move forward. My teammates have always encouraged me to do better. I will learn from my previous experiences,” she added.

Overcoming a childhood marked by hardship and societal rejection, 20-year-old Bibi Fatima has emerged as a formidable kickboxer, winning multiple accolades at the national and international levels.
Fatima, who has been training in kickboxing for 12 years, has secured 29 gold medals in district, state, and national championships. Despite a hand injury, she recently won two silver medals in an international tournament held in New Delhi.
Fatima’s journey is a testament to perseverance. Her father abandoned the family two decades ago due to the absence of a male heir. Left destitute, Fatima’s mother attempted to end her life, but the family was taken in by Akram Pasha, a transgender beggar in Mysuru. Pasha adopted Fatima and supported her education and training, earning a living through alms to sustain the family.
Currently pursuing her secondary education, Fatima dreams of representing India in the Olympics. However, financial constraints hinder her aspirations. She hopes to open a kickboxing training centre to support herself and provide for Pasha, who continues to pay rent for both their accommodations.
Recognising her achievements, members of the M. Friends Charitable Trust from Mangaluru, led by Rashid Vitla, visited her home to extend financial assistance and encouragement. Social organisations and sports enthusiasts have been urged to come forward and support Fatima in achieving her dreams.
