Prof Shahab Fazal of the Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been conferred the prestigious National Geospatial Faculty Fellow Award at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.
The award was presented in recognition of Prof Fazal’s significant contribution to advancing geospatial education through his textbooks and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His work has played a vital role in popularising geospatial technologies and making them accessible to students across the country.
Padma Shri Prof Kiran Kumar, Former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), presented the award during a special ceremony held at the Prof B. Nag Main Auditorium of IIT Bombay.
The award ceremony was a key highlight of the Open Source GIS Day Celebrations, organised by the FOSSEE GIS project of IIT Bombay. This initiative falls under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT), Ministry of Education, Government of India.

In a remarkable academic achievement, Majid Mujahid Hussain, a 17-year-old from Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, has secured All India Rank (AIR) 3 in JEE Advanced 2025, one of India’s most competitive entrance exams for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other top engineering institution, reported the Indian Express.
Majid scored 330 out of 360 marks, achieving a 99.9992 percentile, placing him among the top performers nationwide. The examination saw over 54,000 candidates qualifying this year, including 9,404 female candidates.
The overall topper of the exam is Rajit Gupta, while Devdatta Majhi from West Bengal emerged as the top-ranking female candidate.
Majid, who also topped JEE Mains 2025 (Session 1) with 296 out of 300 marks earlier this year, is from the IIT Bombay zone, which had a strong showing with three students in the top 10 and 31 in the top 100.
Coming from a humble background, Majid’s father, Mujahid Hussain, is self-employed and his mother is a homemaker. Their unwavering support and his disciplined approach played a vital role in his success. His teachers recall him as a consistently brilliant student who showed promise from a young age.
Majid completed his schooling in Burhanpur and has an impressive academic record — over 95% in Class 10 and 93% in Class 12 CBSE exams. He also actively participated in National Olympiads, excelling in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. He earned accolades in Math Olympiad, NSEC, INPFO, IOQM, NSEP, INMO, INCHO, and SOF competitions.
Speaking about his preparation strategy, Majid said he followed a structured schedule with 8–10 hours of daily self-study, solving previous years’ JEE papers, regular mock tests, and error analysis. Despite initially struggling with Physics, he turned it into a strength with continuous effort and coaching support.
To manage stress, he practiced meditation and took breaks with books for relaxation. His disciplined preparation helped him maintain top performance throughout both JEE Main and Advanced.
Majid aims to pursue Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay. Expressing pride in his son’s achievement, his father praised Majid’s focus and dedication.
To aspiring JEE candidates, Majid advises: “Work hard, stay consistent, and learn from your mistakes. Give equal importance to all subjects and solve previous year papers regularly.”

Girls outperform boys in Jamia Millia Islamia’s internal examinations, and Umaima’s performance has emerged as a shining example

Reflecting dedication and discipline, Umaima Bano, a student from a small village in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, has made her mark in the results declared by Jamia Millia Islamia. Scoring 96.4 per cent in the Class 10 board examinations, Umaima becomes one of the top 10 rank holders this year.
The Class 12 and 10 results were released on 14 and 15 May, respectively. This year, girls have notably outperformed boys in Jamia’s internal examinations, and Umaima’s performance has emerged as a shining example.
Umaima hails from Sadaravan, a remote village in Sitapur district. Her father, Kamal Ahmed, is the principal of a private intercollege, and her achievement has brought pride not only to her family but also to her entire village.
Despite her modest background, Umaima demonstrated excellence across all subjects. According to the official marksheet, she scored 97% in Hindi, 98% in English, 99% in Mathematics, 93% in Science, 95% in Social Science, 96% in Urdu, and 95% in Islamiyat.
Her performance reflects a well-rounded grasp of both academic and language-based subjects. Speaking to local media, her father expressed pride in her efforts:
“Umaima has always been a disciplined and hardworking child. We had faith in her, but her achievement has exceeded our expectations,” Kamal Ahmed said.
Umaima’s academic journey has been marked by determination. She completed her primary education from New Vision Public Inter College in Muhammadabad, Uttar Pradesh. She then appeared for Jamia Millia Islamia’s national-level entrance test, securing an impressive 45th rank.
This feat earned her a place in the prestigious university, where she now lives in a student hostel to pursue her studies with greater focus.
“I want to become an IAS officer and serve my country,” Umaima shared when asked about her future goals. “My parents’ sacrifices inspire me every day to work harder.”
The news of Umaima’s success spread quickly across her village, where neighbours and well-wishers gathered to congratulate the family. Local teachers and community leaders praised her for being a role model for rural students.
“Umaima’s success has shown that even students from small villages can reach great heights with sincerity and support,” said Feroz Khan, a teacher from her former school.

Mumbai student overcomes cramped living conditions to achieve national success in the prestigious entrance exam.

Ayan Sheikh, a 20-year-old student from a modest 96-square-foot house in Byculla, has achieved an extraordinary feat by securing the 12th rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in his first attempt. Ayan, currently in his third year of a computer science degree, hopes to follow in his elder brother’s footsteps and secure admission to IIT Bombay for his master’s degree.
Living in a cramped chawl in Mustafa Bazaar’s Haji Alana with his parents and elder brother, Ayan’s journey to success is a testament to determination and hard work. With limited space at home, Ayan and his brother Aman, who previously cracked the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and graduated from IIT Bombay, often studied on a makeshift platform built in their small house.
“My success is the result of my parents’ prayers and their constant hard work,” Ayan told Clarion India. “Even with a limited income, my father tried his best to give both of us brothers a better and higher education. Despite the lack of space, we made the most of what we had. This platform has been our study spot for years, and it holds a special place in our hearts.”
Ayan scored an impressive 89.04 percent marks in the exam, which is considered one of the toughest national-level entrance tests for postgraduate engineering courses. Out of 1.8 lakh candidates who appeared for the exam, Ayan’s 12th rank is a remarkable achievement.
His father, Akhtar Sheikh, a senior fitter at BEST’s Mumbai Central Depot, expressed his joy and pride. “Ayan’s result is like the blessings of Ramadan for us,” he said. “One lakh 80 thousand students appeared for the GATE exam, and Ayan secured the 12th position. This is a huge achievement for our family.”
Ayan’s academic journey has been marked by consistent excellence. He scored 90% in his SSC exams from Enza English High School in Byculla and 78% in his HSC exams from Peace College in Dadar. He is currently pursuing a computer science degree at DJ Sanghvi College in Vile Parle and will complete his four-year course next year.
Ayan’s elder brother, Aman Sheikh, is an inspiration for the family. Aman secured 90% in SSC and 89% in HSC before cracking the JEE exam with a rank of 1,023 out of 1.5 lakh candidates. He went on to complete his B.Tech and M.Tech in electrical engineering from IIT Bombay and now works for an American company in Bengaluru with an annual package of Rs 12 lakh.
“I hope to get admission to IIT Bombay, just like my brother,” Ayan said. “This platform in our house has been our study corner for years. Even today, I sit here and study for three to four hours daily. It’s a part of our lives.”

Zainab-ul-Kubra (3rd year), and Intizar-ul-Islam (4th year), Prize winners from NUSRL

Students of National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), have secured first place in the International Arbitral Award Writing Competition. Two university students, Intizar-ul-Islam (4th year) and Zainab-ul-Kubra (3rd year), achieved the top honour in the 5th Surana & Surana RGNUL International Arbitral Award Writing Competition 2024.
This is a significant achievement for the university, as the duo won this accolade by outperforming participants from some of the most renowned universities in India and abroad. The competition was organised by Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR) at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, in collaboration with Surana & Surana International Attorneys.
Participants were tasked with drafting an arbitral award based on a hypothetical legal problem.
More than 72 contestants took part, including students pursuing BA-LLB, LLM, PhD, MPhil, or other law-related courses. The competition deadline was October 30, 2024, and the results were announced in January.
Based on their exceptional skills, Intizar and Zainab not only secured the first position but also received a cash prize of ₹25,000 for their victory. Their success highlights their dedication and expertise in the field of law. The competition served as an excellent platform for students to showcase their legal writing abilities.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Ashok R. Pal, congratulated Intizar and Zainab on their achievement.

Senior scholar, thinker, and writer, Prof. Muzaffar Hussain Assadi, who served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Political Science Department at Mysore University, passed away late Friday night at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He was 63 years old.
Prof. Muzaffar Assadi conducted extensive studies on the lives and lifestyles of tribal communities.
He served as the chairperson of a committee appointed to address the displacement of tribal populations. His research and contributions spanned areas such as agricultural studies, globalization, Gandhian philosophy, political sociology, democratic theories, social movements, comparative governance, Indian politics, human rights, and global political theories, earning him significant recognition.
Hailing from Shirva in Udupi district, Dr. Muzaffar Assadi completed his postgraduate degree from Mangalore University, followed by an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
He later pursued a Rockefeller Fellowship and Post-Doctoral studies at the University of Chicago.
He authored 11 books during his illustrious career.
As the chairperson of the High Court Committee on Tribal Displacement, he submitted an impactful report.
His notable works include Multifaceted Feminist Narratives and Movements in Karnataka, Asmita, among others.
Previously, he served as the Special Officer of the newly established Raichur University.
Prof. Assadi received numerous honors, including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award.

The students and teachers of the German Section, Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) contributed significantly to the Translation Project conducted by Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai.
The South Asian regional translation project, “Diamantenschliff: The Digital Translation Academy” focused on the translations of German literary works into the South Asian languages with special emphasis on the translation of selected works of Franz Kafka from German into various South Asian languages, including Bangla, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Sinhala, Tamil and Urdu.
Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor, German Language and Literature, Department of Foreign Languages, who was the mentor for Urdu translations, moderated a lecture session on translation delivered by Dr Almuth Degener, a retired professor from the Indology Department, University of Mainz, Germany.
The current and former students of the German Section, including Mohammad Uzair, Mohammad Khalid, Sadique Khan, Mohammad Intizar, Muhammad Fahad and Syeda Alina Ali translated different works of Kafka from German into Urdu, while Mr Syed Salman Abbas contributed to and edited the Urdu translations for the website.
Dr Subair PM, Assistant Professor, made contributions as one of the translators of German texts into Malayalam.
The one-year-long project concluded with the launch of the translations on the official website of Goethe-Institut, on July 3, marking Franz Kafka’s birthday. The voice recordings of the Urdu translations are also available on the website.
Prof Muhammad Azhar, Dean of the Faculty of International Studies and Chairman of the concerned department appreciated the unique achievement of the students and faculty members of the department and congratulated them for their outreach.

Prof. Rubi Anjum, Department of Tahaffuzi Wa Samaji Tib, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed as the Chairperson of the concerned department, for a period of three years, with effect from July 1, 2024.
Prof Anjum, engaged in teaching and research for over the last 16 years, has authored two books and published more than 70 research papers in journals of national and international repute. Besides this, she has attended more than 70 national and international conferences and seminars and presented papers on myriad topics.
She received an Award of Appreciation at a World Health Day event held at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on April 3, 2016, for her role in creating awareness about diabetes.
